U2 Plot Five “No Line on the Horizon” Editions

12/22/08, 3:10 pm EST

Photo: Buckner/Getty

U2 have revealed the five ways their new album No Line on the Horizon will be available on March 3rd. Besides compact disc and double vinyl, Horizon will also be offered as a $36 digipak featuring a 36-page booklet, a poster and a downloadable film directed by Anton Corbijn “featuring the music of U2.” $50 will get you the same package, except this time its housed in a “soft cover magazine-style book” with a 60-page booklet. Then there’s the Box Set version, which is pretty much the magazine version with a hardcover book, a second poster and a $96 price tag, according to Amazon. Hopefully the differences between the three deluxe packages will become more clear as we move closer to release date, as an additional $46 for hardcover may be a bit much with a recession going on. The track list has still not been announced, but “Crazy Tonight,” featuring Will.i.am, is expected to make the final cut.

kUDOS TO A BUNCH OF OLD GUYS THAT STILL KNOW HOW TO PUT ON GOOD SHOW.

I don’t know why anyone complains about their capitalistic ventures.. if it bothered people that much, wouldn’t they boycott buying anything u2- ish hmmm ?

After listening to this disc a few times I have wondered what signifigance the = equal symbol holds in relation to the concept behind this album… and when he was at the ATM machine - did he take outa few bucks for me ? or was that Katy Perry standing behind him asking him to take some cash out?

I’m Just wondering how long it will take for U2 to start marketing their own line of H & M type scarves .. “In A Little While” perhaps? ?

I do find the video for ‘Magnificent’ quite visually interesting and do look forward to more visual clues as to what the entire concept is behind that ‘No Line On the Horizon” title.

Wish I could score a ticket or two to see the “MAGNICENCE” IN PERSON AT A CONCERT.. SOME DAY PERHAPS.. AFTER THE FUN FAIR?

I agree that only good song is Magnificent,it’s a classic U2 song…Few more interesting songs, but most of the tracks are so pontless, dumb and boring…What happend to good old U2???”How to dismantle..”was a joke, this is pretty much same thing…Is there really no line on horizon for them any more?

Scott Montes | 2/26/2009, 8:29 pm EST

Man….you u2 haters have no soul…if you can’t hear the brilliance of the Edge..and the passion of Bono…your soul is definitely lost! The only band to ever make relevant music for 3 decades!! Way to go again boys! the album is brilliant!

aussieu2 | 2/25/2009, 2:08 am EST

Absolutly THEE worst album of 09.I loved u2 , but for god sake singing about a phone ??
5 years in the making , my god what did they do ??
Rolling Stone HOW can yu give this 5 at least 3 ok , but its basically crap !
Who payed you off , TAKE YOUR U2 GOOGLES OFF and see it as it is, a lame boring over produced piece of work that as i said earlier, will be ( and is so far ) THEE worst ablum of 09

I finally found the Myspace stream. Wow!!! I really didn’t care for GOYB the first few times I heard it but I’m really lovin the album on first listen. Favorite so far is Magnificent. Best U2 song since AB in my opinion. Album drops the day befor my birthday and all I can say is Thanks U2 for a wonderful bday present.

No Line on the Horizon ??

I’ve had this album for a couple of weeks now…
(don’t bother waiting for the March 3rd release)

…there’s ONLY two songs one can identify as OK/GOOD, the rest is pretty lame, honestly even U2 here is going down the appalling path.

They could have done so much better - lack of material perhaps ? DEFO !

U2 is the greatest band in the world. Anyone who puts U2 down on here shouldn’t be on here. I don’t and never will support elegal downloading. There are only a couple bands who have been around 25+ years and still put out new music but I can’t think of too many who have been this succesful for this long as U2 has. They are the greatest band ever and will be my favorite band ’til the day I die.

Only Jesus can walk on water-but
musicians have to wait until hell freezes over- then it’s called a pond.

Personally since I don’t own skates and I’m not a musician- ‘No Line On the Horizon’ will be an intersting listen even IF it’s not about the second coming of Christ.

Ask Yourself THIS question-:
Would the good Lord snap up any ONE of the 5 versions of the upcoming album? Even God forgives big egos- enjoy the music for what it IS and stop criticising it for what it’s most definitely not.

bring it on

So sick of U2, I Would probably like the music more if Boner would’nt try to be Jesus all the time. How about if he gave away, let’s say half of what he is worth before he starts telling regular folks to donate money to what ever cause that is popular at the moment

there's no secret | 1/18/2009, 8:50 am EST

I read the comment that U2 takes their fans for granted. I have been to many concerts and paid $150 per ticket plus airfare and hotel. I have bought the albums since the 80’s and now the CDs. The latest will be a legal download on my iphone. Seems to me they are not taking advantage of their fans but keeping up with their fans of many years while inviting new ones. They always deliver my money’s worth at a concert and I can’t wait for the next. People who are nay-sayers don’t get it and I feels sorry for them.

Greg | 1/11/2009, 8:28 pm EST

Long time fan looking forward to the new album. While I appreciate that collectors what something out of the ordinary I do worry about the “we’re in it for the money” theme by releasing 5 versions of the same album while the global economy is in a tail spin.

I am all for the 5 version but give the money to charity. Paul and the boys have enough money to purchase several counties in Ireland.

Welcome back, can’t wait for the new album, but becareful of the backlash (rich geezers preaching about debt relief, jet setters preaching about carbon emissions…..)

Babs | 1/8/2009, 4:51 am EST

U2 is awesome! They actually make NEW music, that doesn’t sound like it’s ripping off everything else that’s ever come before (well, it doesn’t sound the same to me anyways) I can’t wait for the new album to come out, I’ve only been waiting for five years…
And if all anyone reading this site wants to do is bash U2 and their music, or just Bono, why don’t you go start your own website, or find one devoted to just such a topic. Whenever someone’s good at something you can bet there’s going to be plenty of people to hate them for it. So go hate them there.

Valerie | 1/7/2009, 9:44 pm EST

Found myself wandering around back in “Stay” video-where it feels like Bono is right next to you but you can only sense it, also hung around “City of Blinding Lights”video to reminance a bit. AHHH, those were the days…maybe the new cd can leak out through the internet; just a song or two!

Valerie | 1/7/2009, 5:03 pm EST

Why does Bono have thick black eyeliner on? Its really a turnoff.

T-Dog | 1/7/2009, 9:39 am EST

All of the banter on whether U2 is this or they are not all that is pointless. Music is a personal journey which helps you get through good and bad times. Whatever works for you is fine …

I want to thank Hmmm…I downloaded The Ruse “Midnight in the City” and it is really good.

Thank you!

Peter | 1/7/2009, 2:47 am EST

There are some great pop-rock bands today…Coldplay comes to mind. But U2 are the masters / greatest of all time. Can’t wait until they put it down in March.

And then the concert in Toronto - bloody great times!

I work in a entertainment store that sells a lot of CD’s and vinyl amd I can tell you that people still want the collectable sets and deluxe vinyl, regardless of a recession. U2 is one band that has fans of all ages and income levels and can justify giving their fans a choice of package.
To those of you who choose to not pay for the album by way of illegal downloading, you can ROT!
If you don’t care enough to pay, why bother downloading it?
Of course I’m a fan of U2 and I’m not to keen on the “featuring Will.I.am” bit, but I will wait to here it before I judge it.
U2 does not need to “feature” anybody. EVER.
For all you naysayers out there ripping U2 for whatever reason, think about this,
Name a band that has been around for 30+ years, sold millions of records, keeps releasing NEW records, still one of the best LIVE performers, been through ups and downs career-wise and still be together and viable!

If you want to put down terrible music, start with InsaneClownPosse

change the world
your foolin yourselves
think a lyric is gonna
change people’s minds
dont wast your time
no time to be pessimistic
embrace and celebrate
the insanity of being realistic
poetry of all ages emotionally
filling
To bad it’s never powerful enough
to stop the killing
appreciate the sound
the voice
let it inspire or at the very least
walk more dramatically to the subway
or your next choice

Alot of nonsense in the air. The album isn’t out and all of you have placed judgment on it. Enjoy it when it’s here for those who want to hear it. Those of you who fill the air with negativity don’t bother. U2 is on a level that you will never reach until you let your heart and soul feel the songs. Many never make it there. Others know how it feels. These guys have earned mhy respect. Stop worrying about the prices for the album. Those of you who complain are probably the first ones to pirate downloads. LET GOD’S BAND RING OUT LOUD!!!

oorstevie | 12/28/2008, 7:21 pm EST

again, it is same old same old from U2. Now…this is not a bad thing but…but…it is not a good thing either. All they are doing with the new release is the same as the previous 10 releases, i.e., rearranging the furniture. there is nothing new! the music is ‘ok’, but, ‘ok’ simply does not cut it, and this is evidenced in the declining sales of U2 and such artists…’has-beens’. The rot goes further…it is also evidence of just how bad the music industry is today in particular in the quality of the new artists music (10 years or less on the scene) when old farts like U2 still get to release and magazines like rolling stone make a big deal of it. I mean…is there nothing or no one else out there that is newsworthy? The Beatles or Dylan maybe but even they cannot carry it all by themselves.

I’m totally willing to spend 150-200 every 4-5 years on my favorite band for their album and a couple of concert tickets. And no, they sure don’t expect me to or take it for granted I will. Thats why they play such great live shows, ’cause each one could be their last.

Mea Bonamusica | 12/23/2008, 4:33 pm EST

In my opinion it´s great that U2´s new album will be published in five different formats. That might be a sort of selling strategy, but both artists and record companies have to react on our times in which CD sales are decreasing because of music downloads. Bono once said that a download is like a paperback and a CD is like a hardcover book. Turning a CD into something more special is probably the only way that the CD format can survive.

I have to say that I really enjoy the deluxe versions of the early records, because each one is made like a little book. It´s something that you can hold in your hands and so it´s much more precious than a download.

The prices of some deluxe versions might be a little high, but on the other hand these are things that I´ll have for the rest of my life if my house doesn´t burn down. And with five different formats really everyone can find the appropriate thing.

I don´t think that U2 want to exploit their fans, they only want to offer them something really special. And by the way, U2 always thank their fans for giving them a great life. Merry Christmas!

U2 the most overated band ever… and bono sucks even if he has the noble peace prize

Josh | 12/23/2008, 3:29 am EST

I agree that a double vinyl does not mean a double album, though it still might be.

The last several U2 albums each had from 10-12 songs on them, all produced with vinyl incarnations as well as CD. My vinyl versions of “All That You Leave Behind” and “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb” both had 11 songs, and they both were SINGLE vinyl records.

Once you go over the 13 song mark (or a little more than an hour) however, you are talking about a double vinyl. Again I agree, double vinyl doesn’t mean double CD but it pushes the odds more in that possibilities favor.

With a second disc on a CD it can be anything, a live concert, a DVD of video’s and even a few bonus b-sides, but there is no way they are creating a whole second vinyl record to put in this pack UNLESS there is a crap load more music, and music that’s part of the album (not just crapy bonuses).

It’s tough to tell with the CD’s these days because they can hold up to 20 or more songs, but this seems to be a significant more amount of music than the last few U2 albums.

I’m tempted to concur, this (and everything else I’ve been hearing) makes me think “No Line On The Horizon” could be a double album.

What a great way to go in these last few years of U2’s career!

Nope. | 12/23/2008, 2:16 am EST

Double vinyl does not mean double album. It’ll be a single disc.

octopus inks | 12/23/2008, 12:24 am EST

a U2 song featuring will.i.am. that sounds like it sucks already. 5 versions of the same album huh? why dont you make one of the versions the Rick Rubin produced songs? thats something i would pay for

Joe | 12/22/2008, 11:44 pm EST

FlyontheWall, I have no credible information to say its NOT a double album, but POP was released in a 2-LP vinyl format as well.

And thanks for a well-written post. This is just another way to offer fans VARIETY, something that you won’t get when you download this album (illegally or otherwise). It’s SMART BUSINESS. If you view it as a “corporate enterprise” it almost identifies you as a bourgeois upper middle class college student, who still believes that bands don’t “sell out”, whatever that means. U2 happens to enoy success on their terms because 1) They make great music 2) They are a great live band 3) They NEVER take their fans for granted 4) They are always looking to expand their sound. If I am a fan of a musician or a band, I WANT the opportunity to be a part of whatever new products they have in relation to their music. Bands from the Smashing Pumpkins to Metallica to Nine Inch Nails to the Red Hot Chili Peppers have released different versions with extra items for fans. U2 released 3 versions of Atomic Bomb and I happened to buy the “deluxe edition” and I was happy to do so. No Line on the Horizon marks 30 years of a great band. Keep it up, U2!!!

Sarcastic intonation here: Yeah, no other band releases multiple versions of the same album with extra products to go with it. Oh and FYI, this release has nothing to do with Live Nation and the “stock debacle” U2 got their stock options regardless of how poorly Live Nation did in the stock market. And here we go again with U2 “taking fans’ money”. NO other band in the world gets as much flak for this as U2. It makes no sense. They are the best, biggest, and smartest band in the world. They just so happen to donate time and money to charitable organizations, which they sure as fuck dont have to do. Deal with it.

You guy’s are waaaaay to serious on this issue, don’t you have anything else better to do? I myself am a huge fan of the band, therefor I will try to grab either the $50 or $100 package. You guy’s interested in the album but not any of the other “junk” as you refer to it? Great. Buy the album for $10 at best buy or at iTunes when it comes out.

Still sore about it? Then don’t buy it at all.

I have enjoyed watching this bad through all of their incarnations, and will continue to do so. I may not like every piece of music they have ever put out, but I know that for a band this great whom have done this much, they work their asses of to deliver a great record for the public EVERY time. If they want to have some fun with packaging and make more money who gives a shit? Art without good business is a waste. I know what I’m getting when I buy a U2 album or go to their shows. I’m getting something that the artist at the corner coffee house can’t give me, and that is one spectacular earth shaking event! One with alot of soul and heart.

Of course, I still support the guy playing guitar at the coffee house, because I want him to have the same opportunity as U2 did someday.

Back to the packaging: While you’re at it, please attack Warner Brothers for making other additions of The Dark Knight, or any other of the bands that do the same.

And only a fool would think giving to charity and making money on your hard fought product is the same thing!

morganscott | 12/22/2008, 7:29 pm EST

even tho they advocate for the poor, U2 love to take its fans’ money. check out the price of the early album reissues.

Kevin | 12/22/2008, 7:04 pm EST

As a former fan who became less interested the more grandiose the band became–and whose interest was once again piqued by the simpler peaks of their last album–I’m kind of sad to hear they’re doing all this junk.

The further they get from being just a band and the more they indulge in being a Corporate Enterprice, the less interested I get. Guys, make your beautiful music and reduce the amount of unnecessary junk in the world. Just my opinion.

Fred | 12/22/2008, 6:22 pm EST

If by U2-esque you mean U2 from the War era, then yeah, the Ruse does a passable job of imitating them. So did the Killers, the Alarm, Simple Minds, et al. U2 doesnt have to top shit they did 25 years ago. That’s kinda the point. It’s nice to have bands cover ground you have walked on, but pointless to try and go back there.

Hmmm.... | 12/22/2008, 6:03 pm EST

I wonder if this album will be as good as The Ruse album Midnight in the City? Because that was a great U2-esqu album from 2008. I doubt that U2 can top it.

TheFlyOnTheWall | 12/22/2008, 6:01 pm EST

Double vinyl? Does that tease the fact that perhaps it’s a double album!?
