what about spaceman? that got so many votes

Chuck | 12/22/2008, 5:28 pm EST

Which Metallica song? “All Nightmare Long” or “My Apocalyspe”? Or is “My Nightmare” a clever way of saying it’s a tie?

Leila | 12/22/2008, 7:16 pm EST

I’m not suprised The Killers won. :) GOOOO VICTIMS!

Lola | 12/22/2008, 7:20 pm EST

I dont think spaceman was eligible.
But great job fellow Victims! The Killers are number one once again!

moii | 12/22/2008, 8:23 pm EST

The Killers can’t help that they have a lot of fans :P They won fair and square
Gooooooooooooooooooooo oo Killers!

Beth | 12/22/2008, 9:15 pm EST

the Killers rock!!!

Joey Joe | 12/22/2008, 10:15 pm EST

Go Human!!!
Too bad Spaceman doesn’t count, cos that would have definitely been #2!!

Donovan | 12/22/2008, 11:03 pm EST

So apparently there can be no more readers’ lists because Killers fans are lobbying. Kind of takes the fun out of things. It’s ok to be a fan of the Killers, but come on, they don’t deserve to be on the top of any list this year.

the killers forever | 12/23/2008, 12:13 am EST

donovan, i hope you know that the killers fans arent sitting here on the edge of our seat voting constantly. they won because they have plenty of fans and they deserved to win.

WOO THE KILLERS FOREVER♫

replikhant | 12/23/2008, 12:38 am EST

this is a pretty good list.

thezero | 12/23/2008, 12:44 am EST

finally, some recognition for volta on a year end list… damn…

Anonymous | 12/23/2008, 6:11 am EST

The Killers won! I’m so happy for them :D

Sameer | 12/23/2008, 8:57 am EST

well done human. best track in the list.

i think MGMT Kids should have been in there too..

Anonymous | 12/23/2008, 9:59 am EST

“victims” are really lame.

And I like the Killers (except the new album which sucks ass)

Just saying... | 12/23/2008, 11:44 am EST

Lots of people voted for Killers not just Victims, so people need to stop saying that. I don’t think the Killers winning took any fun from anything or from choosing favorites for reader’s polls. However, I do think constantly seeing bands like TV on the Radio on top of critics lists takes the fun out of anything, yeah, their good musicians but do these magazines really listen to anything else except for things that many of its readers don’t? Just saying…and what I find most interesting is that Scarlett Johanson’s album got good reviews…why? Because the guy from TV on the Radio produced some of the record. It’s a terrible record in which she shows no musical talent and yet, TV on the Radio being associated with it got it some attention…whatever…

nana | 12/23/2008, 12:01 pm EST

ah, it doesn’t matter, the Killers won! Ha!

Ali | 12/23/2008, 3:17 pm EST

I’m pleasantly surprised to see GN’R’s “Sorry” on the list. It’s a great song, with a Floyd meets Sabbath vibe to it.

Ali

Mace | 12/23/2008, 5:19 pm EST

RS sucks ass … its called a READERS POLL .. meaning you just insulted your own audience by accusing them of choosing an unworthy song. The Killers do deserve this . I wish that the media would stop criticizing the killers because it is seen as cool!

lorena | 12/23/2008, 5:57 pm EST

thank god the killers won, best band and best song on the list, hands down

Tommy T | 12/23/2008, 6:54 pm EST

MY MORNING JACKET “IM AMAZED”

DAVID | 12/24/2008, 11:51 am EST

well i think Girl Talk deserved a spot…

News Bulletin | 12/24/2008, 11:54 am EST

The Killers have shot their load.

Anonymous | 12/24/2008, 2:19 pm EST

Human is the worst song on the killers new album, which is an unremarkable album at best

Anonymous | 12/25/2008, 12:21 am EST

This list really got me thinking, “are we human, or are we dancer.” haha. Im real happy that Kings of Leon ranked so high, they deserve it. Honestly though, i think top should be viva la vida, then human, then sex on fire.

alli | 12/25/2008, 11:59 pm EST

I don’t know how beyonce or kanye west got on her(I like them but its weird) im glad killers made number one ” are we humans, or are we dancers?” viva la vida is a good song too.

chris | 12/27/2008, 2:01 pm EST

MGMT…phenomenal

electric feel good too

and i agree with the girl talk comment

Big Patty | 12/29/2008, 1:08 am EST

Gnarles Barkley owns

Anonymous | 12/31/2008, 3:14 am EST

YES!!!! The Killers deserve to be #1…. give credit 2 were credit is due….and RS really? Stop hating on Brandon Flowers. Run on you Neon Tiger!!!! Us Killer, web-savy Fans will continue to support… Key word Fans!

Anonymous | 12/31/2008, 3:19 am EST

By the way Brandon Flowers was right, bout how Sams Town is one of the greatest albums on the past 20th century.

Savanna2006 | 1/1/2009, 5:13 am EST

I’ve got to say I’m incredibly surprised at the amount praise for Human. It’s a pile of poo! The lyrics are awful (”my sign is vital” – seriously people?) and I feel so sorry for the rest of the band, previously the driving force behind the band are now reduced to bit-players. Bring back “Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine”!

Garseed | 1/3/2009, 2:07 pm EST

What happened to Be Your Own Pet’s “The Kelly Affair”? That’s for sure song of the year. Also Panic at the Disco for “Northern Downpour” should be on. Also just for the record MGMT is totally over rated. They’re a trend just like Vampire Weekend.

JustRock | 1/4/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Kanye? Beyonce? Lil Wayne? Just exactly how do these artists classify as rock? I don’t believe I’ve ever heard any of these artists on my local rock stations. No wonder the music industry is hurting.

joe | 1/4/2009, 4:20 pm EST

#1 and 2 are the only decent tracks on the list

Adam | 1/8/2009, 2:25 pm EST

Gotta say this is one of the few times I kind of agree with RS. Good songs these.

Adam | 1/8/2009, 2:28 pm EST

but killers first? comon give me a break. fleet foxes, bon iver, tv on the radio, deerhunter, mars volta, death cab for cutie all good choices.

marina | 1/11/2009, 12:58 am EST

to bad you’re all under the age of 40. aerosmith, j.geils band, ten years after, the who, the stones, sly and the family stone, etc.,etc,. yes, alot of the music today is finally good but to put rappers and beyonce(for goodness sake) in a category in with rock is really DUMB! they are not rockers! how about heart, the eagles, allman brothers, BEATLES,war, the who,LED ZEPPLIN-PLEASE- RESEARCH your history of rock before you throw anything out there.

Anonymous | 1/19/2009, 3:20 pm EST

Human Number 1. Whoo Hoo! Maybe the other bands aren’t as good as the world thinks. The Killers never get any credit for what they do. yes, it took me forever to figure out the meaning of Human but it is beautiful and I truly understand it now. Maybe the other bands should build up a bigger fan base. Good for The Killers, they know how to get fans and keep them to raise their publicity. They are nice guys and rap does not classify as Rock. It classifies as crap. Go Killers! I will Always Love You!

john | 1/22/2009, 10:35 am EST

go killers you are the best down coldplay you STEALING the song

mishh | 1/26/2009, 6:39 am EST

why why WHY is beyonces shitass song on that list??? even miley cyrus can top that

Jen | 1/26/2009, 4:10 pm EST

Love the killers, glad they are top of this list- kings of leon deserve the recognition too. Whoever said they knew the meaning of ‘Human’ please enlighten me, I love tapping my foot along to it but it bugs the hell outta me that I dont get what its about! Cheers

the killers | 1/30/2009, 11:04 pm EST

I love Human. I actually didn’t even really like the killers until I heard that song.

Tommy | 2/22/2009, 7:50 pm EST

I think Motley crue is the all time best

Chris | 2/24/2009, 11:20 pm EST

Human by The Killer’s is a ripped off piece of shit… that shouldnt even be recognised as music. Killer’s only good song is ‘When We Were Young’.

Riddick | 2/27/2009, 10:20 pm EST

where is hinder in this list…i think their new album is so good!
LOADED AND ALONE or WITHOUT YOU should be there in this list..and
Guns nd Roses IRS should also be there in this list…amazing song!

Phersephone | 3/10/2009, 5:46 pm EST

John Sharpe | 4/15/2009, 2:31 am EST

Pretty nice list actually. Very “arty” songs too. I’m impressed. Side note: I see songs with 60’s type sound elements are very “in”.

Bhimbim | 4/16/2009, 2:37 pm EST

great list !,
hey whay you ask about beatles, or led zepelin ?, READ THE TITLE, best 100 song list of 2008, great choice.

Dude Man | 4/18/2009, 3:33 pm EST

Not a great list. Here’s some singles released in ‘08 I feel belong:
Metallica-”The Day that Never Comes”
Foo Fighters-”Let it Die”( Best Foo Fighters song ever by the way)
Buckcherry-”Rescue Me”
AC/DC-”Rock ‘n’ Roll Train”
Nickleback-”Gotta be Someboby”
Whitesnake-”Lay Down Your Love”

Dude Man | 4/18/2009, 4:05 pm EST

Also:
Staind-”Believe”
Black Tide-”Shout”
Rise Against-”Re-education(through Labor)”
Oasis-”The Shock of the Lightening”

Revolver7 | 4/26/2009, 1:57 am EST

I’m glad Human is #1. The Killers are a great band, and Human is a great song. Rolling Stone, you need to give these guys another look. They’re really something out of this world

Nicole | 4/26/2009, 2:50 pm EST

Coldplay rock (:

beth | 5/20/2009, 1:39 pm EST

i love the top 3

number 3 should be number 1!! love itttttttt!

Former Killer Fan | 6/3/2009, 9:01 pm EST

I hate that Human song. It’s awful. Stupid lyrics, sappy melody. I used to like the Killers, but this song is so revolting I now hate the Killers.

jesssss | 6/8/2009, 5:55 am EST

skinny love~ bon iver :)

yay!

best song

Synyster | 6/11/2009, 4:56 pm EST

this whole list sucks shit. fuck this crap. Avenged Sevenfold-Burn Halo-Slipknot-Metallica-Papa Roach. just a few good bands that kick the shit outta this fucking list

Joe Shmo | 6/27/2009, 11:23 pm EST

Black Keys, Racounteurs, MGMT, Coldplay. Fleet Foxes. I agree with some of these. No ACDC??? I guess the greatest rock band alive doesn’t deserve a mention….

GARRETH KENZITT!! | 7/19/2009, 4:15 pm EST

I’m glad that there are good songs on this list and not shit bands like Staind, Avenged Sevenfold, Buckcherry, or Nickelback. Way to go Rolling Stone, you’ve restored some of my faith in your tastes. Keep on liberating!

Ramdom dood | 7/28/2009, 9:17 pm EST

All nightmare long is from the death magnetic. I am suprized nickelback didn’t get somewhere up there. They have alot of great songs, and do O.A.R. Then again this is a blog and some of them are unaccurate. Just go to the 10 most downloaded songs on iTunes or something. Those are totally accurate.

acidrules | 9/3/2009, 1:29 pm EST

dude where is sunshine of your love?

bring back Buffalo Springfield!!!

drugs rule!!!

Elvis Shadows | 9/10/2009, 6:23 pm EST

Beyonce? Kanye West? Estelle? What the hell is happening here? This is not rock, not at all, you’re forgettting Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot, Serj Tarkian and a lot of great bands that should be here, not this crap, Rolling Stone sucks!!!!

ahhh | 9/20/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Anthony | 10/27/2009, 7:43 pm EST
