Bruce Springsteen Plans Wal-Mart Only “Greatest Hits”

Hoping to cash in on Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band’s Super Bowl appearance, Wal-Mart will exclusively release the group’s Greatest Hits at a low price on January 13th. As opposed to Springsteen’s 1995 collection Hits, the comp’s 12 tracks will focus on Bruce’s work with the E Street Band, thus iconic albums like Nebraska and Lucky Town aren’t represented, nor does the LP feature any unreleased material.

Fans clamoring for new Springsteen songs will get their wish two weeks later on January 27th, as his new album Working on a Dream hits stores. The next issue of Rolling Stone features a preview of the album, and producer Brendan O’Brien opens up about his fourth collaboration with Springsteen. “Bruce was into this material being more orchestral, not just capturing the live feel,” O’Brien says. As for the album’s epic eight-minute opener “Outlaw Pete,” O’Brien says Springsteen wanted every moment of the song to be vibrant.

For much more from O’Brien, news on the tour and David Fricke’s exclusive listen to Dream, check out the issue on newsstands January 7th issue.

Bruce…Please say it ain’t so! That you’re associated in any way shpe or form with freakin’ WAL MART!

Goes against everything you stand for…

charles | 12/22/2008, 7:05 pm EST

We need to put pressure on Bruce and get him to back off this deal with Wal Mart.

Bruce needs to listen to his own words from the Obama rallies. We’ve got a contract with other, the responsibility to take care of one another, especially in these grim times.

camco | 12/22/2008, 7:06 pm EST

We need to boycott this one!

Shame on you, Boss!

Bruce Fan | 12/22/2008, 7:08 pm EST

Bruce, I agree: you’ve got to back out of this deal.

Wal Mart is a terribly oppressive company that has contributed to the decline of the middle class by reaching exclusive agreements with Chinese manufacturers, leading to the layoffs o tens of thousands of American workers.

E-Stree Forever? | 12/22/2008, 7:12 pm EST

Bruce — This deal with Wal Mart, as your crossing a picket line in Tacoma in 1992, seriously damages your reputation and credibility. Makes it look like “money first” for you — screw the implications.

Please don’t do it. Wal Mart is the Darkness on the Edge of Town that’s ruining all of our Hometowns!

Pathetic. Bruce used to stand up for the working poor. Now he does a deal with one of the worlds worst companies. Sell out Bruce.

corporate sell out!

Rick | 12/22/2008, 8:09 pm EST

Since 1978, my rock and roll faith has been in Springsteen and it’s sad that so late in the journey he’s decided to travel his road hand in hand with this company that is ruining small businesses in many towns, treats its employees terribly and continues to feed America’s gluttonous appetite for low proced crap.

No good, Bruce. i won’t be buying this “money grab” CD and it looks like I’ll be sitting out my first tour since `78.

Looking forward to your Chevy truck commercial, Boss.

Dan in St. Louis | 12/22/2008, 10:42 pm EST

Never thought I’d see this happen. Sad to hear it, Bruce. Many of the problems facing characters in your songs can be attributed directly to the business practices of companies like Wal-Mart. I guess making even more money is more important than preserving your integrity or being consistent with the message of your music.

Brocknroll | 12/22/2008, 11:02 pm EST

“Working on a Dream” the new album is being released everywhere, of course. It’s just the Greatest Hits album being sold through Wal Mart only. The F.Y.E. deal is just a thing where people can get free cards and posters for those who pre-order the new album. Read the article more carefully.

After reading this Bruce bashing lets really think if he had alot to do with this. Don’t you think Columbia had alot more to do wtth deal then bruce.

madmilker | 12/23/2008, 12:21 am EST

People in America need to realize jus what got America in this shape…”cheap” yes so-call cheap items from a foreign land.

quote*Wal-Mart firmly believes in local procurement. We recognize that by purchasing quality products, we can generate more job opportunities, support local manufacturing and boost economic development. Over 95% of the merchandise in our stores in China is sourced locally. We have established partnerships with nearly 20,000 suppliers in China. *end quote!

Now! if there be 182 country’s making items for the world to buy and they have only 5% of the pie in China…duh! This company makes the nice people of China support their currency(yuan) by keeping it in their country working for the people there…. but with the “yuan” going up in value and the US dollar going down…all the foreign items that the American consumer buys thinking it is cheap has went up in price.

People…its all about the currency and to keep a currency strong you got to keep it floating around the country you live in so it can work for you. For the past 12 years all them US dollars are being shipped overseas to a foreign bank and with the American worker not making anything for the foreigner to buy the “we the people” have to turn to the “second” largest employer in America(Uncle Sam) to sell “we the people” debt in order to get all them dollars back!

50 years ago a foreigner would had given their left nut for a US dollar or a Hershey’s chocolate bar and today the same foreigner has got Uncle Sam and the American consumer by both all the while Hershey is moving the chocolate factory to Mexico. Wake up! America and think “MADE IN AMERICA.”

Thanks…..Bruce!
y ou have jus sold your soul for the only word tat the few fat farmers with the penmanship of a poet didn’t put in tat piece of paper back in 1776…….”cheap.”

Tony | 12/23/2008, 10:32 am EST

HAHAHAHA I can bet all these boycott calls come from those of you who insist Springsteen is the “voice of the working class” even though neither you nor any of your friends have ever actually been a part of the “working class.”
Here’s a news flash… with the exception of SEIU hacks, most of the working class actually appreciates Wal-Mart, regardless of whether they voted for Obama or not.

brocknroll | 12/23/2008, 10:34 am EST

I don’t see what the big deal is about this “Greatest Hits” deal. It’s just a cheap small deal through Wal-Mart. How does this make Bruce a sell out? It’s nothing more of a promotion kind of thing to hype up his new album and the Superbowl performance. Those that do nothing but say negative things about Springsteen, probably shit on everything in the music industry. LOSERS!!!

madmilker | 12/23/2008, 10:52 am EST

Thank you.

TeddyB | 12/23/2008, 11:13 am EST

I am not sure what the purpose of this Greatest Hits is. It basically adds “Radio Nowhere” to songs every fan has already on the Essential Bruce Springsteen and Greatest Hits.

I’m a big fan of Bruce, but I have to question the motive of this. I used to really like Aerosmith until their endless parade of Greatest Hits after the release of a new studio album, with the requisite 2 new tracks, which I just stopped buying because the 2 new tracks weren’t worth it to keep buying the same songs over and over again. This Bruce hits package contains no new tracks. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to buy it, even a casual fan (whom I would direct towards the Essential as it is now fairly bargain-priced).

Granted, there is a new Bruce album hitting shelves…but does this mean that we’ll get another Greatest Hits next year? I sure hope not.

Jungleland | 12/23/2008, 11:15 am EST

Hey, guy’s:
Just thought I’d let you know, this is probably all of Columbia Records fault. They pretty much control all of Bruce’s releases. So you want to blame someone? Blame Columbia Records. And Walmart is doing what most major buissnesses do- going out for our hard-earned money. So please don’t blame Bruce. And, hey, Rick? This doesn’t mean you should miss out on another amazing tour? And mentioning tour, did I just hear about a new one? Keep me posted!!!!!!

bobby | 12/23/2008, 11:59 am EST

Those that are complaining are just jealous because you dont have millions of dollars. I dont have a dime and I still respect Bruce. The record companies decide what will be released, ask Tim Mcgraw it happened to him.

Dr. Mabuse | 12/23/2008, 12:19 pm EST

You can’t tell me this is solely the record company’s doing. Springsteen has to have a say in what gets released–he had to have put his stamp of approval on it. He could probably have nixed it if he wanted to.

Bruce Springsteen | 12/23/2008, 12:22 pm EST

Don’t believe all the negative postings here. I really need the money–I have to buy more plaid work shirts. Have you seen how expensive they are? I also need to wallpaper my mansion with dollar bills.

Yours poorly,
Bruce

Aaron | 12/23/2008, 12:25 pm EST

you guys need to calm the fuck down. so some cheap greatest hits cd that none of you are going to buy anyway is going to be at walmart. who gives a shit. If Working on a Dream was walmart exclusive, that’d be a problem, but it’s not. you all need to chill.

Paul | 12/23/2008, 12:26 pm EST

I wish Springsteen would stop releasing music. Workin’ on a Dream, more like Workin’ on a Turd. This is what happens when people believe they are great and have too much money. Nothing Springsteen has done since the River has been worth a shit. When Springsteen stunk like shit, was broke, and didn’t shave we got Born to Run. Now we get My Lucky Day. He thinks it’s great because it is his lucky day. Why? Because he can release crap and roll around in his money. Does Springsteen get his great song titles from Toby Keith?

Workin’ Lonesome Girls Comin’ in their Wal-Mart Clothes Livin’ in the Future Waitin’ on a Sunny Day and Countin’ on Workin’

Now we get Springsteen releasing yet another repackaged “Greatest Hits” for Wal-Mart. AWESOME! Great idea! I can’t wait for a 10 song greatest hits to be sold at Wal-Mart that features crap off Born in the USA and later! That’s the best stuff!! Bruce could use the money so he can come up with some more great song titles and songs that have such deep lyrics that they stand as his best work.

bobby | 12/23/2008, 12:27 pm EST

I don’t care were he sells it, walmart sells his other previous cd’s also. Now people can afford to buy more cd’s, it really is not a big deal.

Brocknroll | 12/23/2008, 12:37 pm EST

Those who talk shit about Bruce, just proves how much of a legend he is. You know the old saying goes, the more you talk shit about someone, the more you are making him famous. Thanks for making Springsteen famous.

Paul | 12/23/2008, 12:41 pm EST

I think Nickelback is more creative than 2008 Springsteen. Workin’ on a Shitpipe.

Paul | 12/23/2008, 12:50 pm EST

Bruce if I can have some of your millions I’ll help with with the lyrics to your next song. Just have the E street band play some corporate crap behind it.

Countin’ on a Dream

A one!, A two!, one two three four!!!

Verse:

Workin’ Countin’ Dreamin’ Livin’ Rollin’ Truckin’ Comin’ Lovin’ Doin’ Seein’ Believin’ Keepin’ Needin’ Feedin’ Peepin’ Goin’ Slowin’ Rowin’

Chorus:

Cause I’m comin’ and goin’
To and a frowin’
Countin’ on a dreeeaaammmm!

Springsteen sold his sold with Born in the USA and everything has been shit since then. Please god make him stop!

madmilker | 12/23/2008, 3:04 pm EST

JR | 12/23/2008, 4:22 pm EST

if springsteen was really interested in making more money , he would have licensed his songs to be used in commercials. he’s one of the few artists who hasn’t.

…”if springsteen was really interested in making more money , he would have licensed his songs to be used in commercials”

Don’t worry–that will come in time.

For starters, how about a laxative commercial using “Born to Run”?

I love Bruce Springsteen, but I’m not a fan of this decision (whoever made it).

See? It’s not hard to articulate a sensible, moderate thought. You spazzes need to calm down.

SadEyes | 12/28/2008, 9:14 pm EST

This truly is dissapointing. I luv Bruce and always will, his music is Amazing and changed my life. But I can not stand by this deal. I’m definetly not a Bruce basher, I’m usually the one who sticks up for him. But this is just so unlike him and against everything he stands for, he was my hero and that’s why it hurts so bad. It brought a tear to my eye. I lost my heart. If Wal Mart can buy The Boss then it won’t be long before they buy the whole country. Soon we will pledge our alligence to the United States of Wal Mart.

Sawman | 12/28/2008, 10:59 pm EST

Mall-Wart is an icon of American crapitalism. Bruce Springsteen is an American. He is as owned by corporate moguls as the rest of us. My only real complaint is that he doesn’t go independent. He is one of the few recording artists in the U.S. who can actually afford to without losing money. But maybe he’s getting old and tired from working on a dream. I thought “Radio Nowhere” was o.k., by the way, and “The Rising” was uplifting in a serious down time. “American Skin” is some of the best social commentary done in rock. So, I’ll give the dream a listen. But I don’t shop at Mall Wart anyway.

luftmensch | 12/29/2008, 11:38 am EST

Bruce who writes about the Poor & Misunderstood, & downtrodden signs on with Walmart!? unbelievable,
Just another freakin Democrat and more hypocrisy, I wouldn’t give 2 cens to see Bruce Springsteen, and I PROUDLY ell you that I’ve never spent one nickel on his crap, or his concerts, unfortunately, he will be doing the half time show at the Superbowl (ugh!) bring back Janet Jackson, that’s what it’s all about, can you dig!?

Laura | 1/22/2009, 11:56 pm EST

I’ve been a fan for over 25 years. I love his music and have admired the man, and I cannot comprehend this act. Whether he was forced into it by his label, felt momentarily desperate to recruit new listeners, or was cashing in regardless of the cost to those exploited by Wal-Mart–none of these explanations really justify the release of an exclusive Wal-Mart release. Perhaps there is another explanation. I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt. To Bruce and Jon Landau: we all make mistakes. And you made an enormous one today. Look into the eyes of the people who work at Wal-Mart and you’ll see Spanish Johnny, Catherine LeFevre, and Joe Roberts. Every worker deserves a fair shake. But they’re not getting it from Wal-Mart. Nor are they getting it from you. Please reconsider.

tom | 1/23/2009, 10:00 pm EST

I love his music and always will, but as for him, he’s been a sell out for a number of years and this is the icing on the cake. He’s a great song writer, but a not a great human being. This proves his act is an act.

The Voice of Rock | 1/26/2009, 8:59 am EST

Calm down Springsteen hasn’t even been releveant since The River and Nebraska. Much like u2 hasnt been relevant since Under a Blood Red Sky. Its a marketing tool used by labels so Columbia can get more points on the record and the artist gets a higher cut. It is really not that big a deal, it wont even move 100000 units anyways

How is this a sell-out? | 1/26/2009, 3:13 pm EST

Get real, people. It’s a 12-track mix of songs every authentic Springsteen fan already has…no extras, no new music. This is just a publicity release…who gives a crap if you can’t buy it at Target? At least he isn’t making his new music only available in Starbucks.

Wal-Mart is the world’s largest retailer. They would be bankrupt if every self-righteous person who claims they NEVER shop there actually followed through on that threat. Bruce isn’t the sell-out…we are. We are the ones who want everything so cheap so we can collect more and more crap. If you don’t like the way Wal-Mart treats their employees and the communities they reside in, stop shopping there…for real.

And Springsteen is still relevent…especially since there seems to be no one else to take up his mantle in the lame, American Idol-dominated music scene we have today.

mangle springsteen lyric here | 1/26/2009, 8:25 pm EST

There are two kinds of people that are upset by this kind of news.

1)Springsteen fetishists who believe one must own every released album to be a “true” fan. To them I say, “no one is forcing you to buy songs you already have.” If you already own all his records, this news doesn’t effect you at all. Why are you so upset?

2) Self-righteous people. Hating WalMart is a commendable stance to take. You can all pat yourselves on the back for publicly (though unfortunately for you, anonymously) crying, “Injustice.” But, um, what they heck are you doing about it? News flash: individual boycotts don’t work. They need to be organized. Until that happens your economic impact will remain invisible. I think WalMart’s union crushing, small business attacking, and worthless crap selling are terrible for America. There business practices need to change. But posting on a comment board doesn’t do anything but make you feel good about yourself.

Damn You! | 1/31/2009, 6:19 am EST

I am deeply outraged at you Bruce. You have let me down. You were my hero, and I thought you were an infallible saint sent from the heavens themselves to cure all of mankind’s ills. Now I have nothing left to believe in. This is the kind of impertinence up with which I shall not put!

LOL, j/k

I do like some of Bruce’s music, especially the Ghost of Tom Joad album, but he’s not really my favorite artist. Wal-Mart, on the other hand, can go to hell. Along with all the other big-box stores that sell mostly cheap goods subsidised by totalitarian governments and worker exploitation. We really do need to include labor and environmental stipulations into our trade agreements. I don’t have anything against foreign labor, as long as they’re paid and treated decently.

don | 1/31/2009, 7:17 am EST

He should apologise to Walmart or give the money back.

Laura | 1/31/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Bruce admitted he made a mistake with the Wal-Mart deal in a Sunday New York Times article. While it’s probably too late to pull the CDs, I’m very pleased that he admitted he got it wrong, and that he listened to the fans and others. It’s a start. Thank you, Bruce. And for the record, no matter how low Wal-Mart’s prices, I have never shopped there and never will, unless they give workers a fair shake. I’m not alone. There are many who currently boycott the store. Check out the DVD Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices and join the movement.

Franco | 1/31/2009, 7:09 pm EST

Bruce, Go pick on someone your own size. Like some one smaller that Wal-Mart. I am a Wal-Mart Associate that enjoys working there. If I didn’t, I would quit and go work somewhere else. Know your facts first before you talk about something you know little about. With almost 2,000,000 associates, Wal-Mart does more good for the USA that a liberal washed-up Rock Star. I wish Wal-Mart would drop you like a rock. Don’t worry, I may look at your new CD in my store, but I will not buy one. Here’s an idea, with all of your millions, how about donating your profits to Wal-Mart Associates with “critical needs”.

Franco | 1/31/2009, 7:16 pm EST

One more thing, the clothes you are wearing in the picture on this Web page are in terrable shape. Run down to your nearest Wal-Mart and buy yourself a new outfit. At least people that work there dress better than your do, have a litte self pride.

The only way the Boss is going to redeem himself in my eyes, and I’m sure many others, is to take all the proceeds from this album sale and donate to an organization that is helping low-income workers with things such as health benefits. Maybe he can donate them to the effort to organize Walmart workers. Shame on you Bruce Sprinsteen.

lucy | 2/1/2009, 7:01 pm EST

I will boycott the superbowl if I find out this is true! Say it aint so Bruce!

Bob | 2/1/2009, 8:35 pm EST

I worked my way through college working part-time at Wal-mart. They were steady and allowed me flexability with my schedule that changed according to my classes. I gave them 120% and they treated me ok. When I graduated they offered me a full time management job but it would have been a waste of my engineering education. They told me ok we understand but if things ever get tough out there in the building world we always have a place for you. I left with good recommendations and value the many lessons they taught me. I would have never gotten rich working at Wal-Mart but then I will never get rich as an engineer either. Anyone that doesn’t like working at Wal-Mart can always leave. Millions of high paid professionals are now out of work due to greed but there are still good jobs at Wal-Mart for people who want to work and show up on time, and don’t lay out sick, or don’t show up when scheduled. If all the government workers worked as hard as those Wal-Mart employees we would need fewer of them. At Wal-Mart if you don’t work you don’t stay. It is your personal choice to be responsible for yourself. Quit crying and get on with your lives.

It’s pretty easy for him to make a big deal with a big company to line his big pockets, then afterwards pretend like it was a “bad decision” to appease people who:
A: Believe word of mouth rather than fact or logic regarding Wal-Mart
And
B: Believe Springsteen is his persona/product, rather than another rich entertainer that got rich on his relevance and art, but gave that up a long time ago in favor of marketing.

Don’t just buy into the hype, do your research. Wal-Mart couldn’t operate if it where “unfriendly to labor” people wouldn’t work there and people wouldn’t shop there.
It must be tough for someone who has been a millionaire for decades to sell himself as somehow connected to “the working man”.

Detroit has thousands of union members today that are unemployed.
What are they getting for all those dues?

Bruce actually has a lot in common with Detroit. Neither one of them has done anything since the 70’s that is worth buying.

OK I might be missing something here but let me rant like everyone else.

Obamanomics!!! The people who either work at or shop at Walmart need the low prices or a job. So go ahead and boycott Walmart and see what happens to the already worsening economy.

I’m taking care of everyone. I have a good paying job. I support my family, I’m generous to others, and I’m getting taxed to death, and yes I’m still spending to keep the economy trickling. I too was was unemployed once so don’t lump me in as privelaged or rich and unfamous. I’m educated and realize we ALL have to rise above the situation if we want to better ourselves. We can’t and shouldn’t sit around wait for a stimulus package. Or depend on the return we invested in union dues.

Make it happen for yourself. If you need to work OR SHOP at Walmart to make ends meet… DO IT and then rise above it and stop you’re whining. Don’t overextend yourself with too much credit or JUMBO loan.

As for Bruce his heart may be bleeding but his wallet isn’t. I am a long time “fan,” although let’s face it unless your out there on a limb you really don’t “feel” the pain. Sure Bruce was rock n roll bum and extremely talented at that, but he had a dream, and he “was working on a dream,” a dream to be a rock n roll star, on his own terms. God Bless him for reaching that pinnacle. Sure he’s trying to make a buck and I believe he is generous when it comes to worhy causes. So watch, listen, learn, and try to learn from the examples of others. At the end of the day we all sleep in our own beds, or out in the street. Take responsibility for yourself, for your actions. Don’t sit idly and expect to have job security or worse be lazy and expect to continue to take home a pay check. Think ahead to that next opporutnity and prepare for it. Make whatever you need to happen, happen as long as you don’t lie, cheat or steal.

Has anybody put down their popcorn long enough to remember. Poor man wanna be rich, rich man wanna be king, king ain’t satisfied until he rules evertying.

Put your faith in God and yourself and then go out and prove it all night.
