Kayne West can’t sing, and I’m suprirsed that his T-Pain recording antics are being praised so much. Beyonce’s Single Ladies, while catchy is really not the best song that she has ever done, and RS it certainly is not a song of the year…..I actually do not like Coldplay, but Viva La Vida is a song of the year, type song. Good lyrics, fab musicianship, and atmospheric majesty….a song that will be around for 20 years and mean something….

The Killers have replaced Coldplay as the band that women love because their lyrics are soft and unoffending, with a U2-style “big sound”. College boys trying to get pussy profess their love for them as well. Yeah, they write decent songs. Yeah, they sound good. But this song “Human” is a far cry from the Bowie-style edginess of “Andy You’re a Star” or the uplifting-without-being-schmal tzy heartbeat of “Everything’s Gonna be Alright”. Not to mention the SOUL SOUL SOUL of “All the Things that Ive Done”. Brandon, what happened to your voice? Did you lose one ball? “Human” is a decent song, but I can come up with a few off the top of my head that were much better for 2008.

Kanye West – Love Lockdown

This guy, as much of an ass as he can be, continues to transcend the “hip hop” genre with emotional, heartfelt tunes that somehow make us dance. When he did this live at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, it was simply electrifying.

Guns and Roses – Sorry

See above, re: Kanye being an ass. Axl shows the world that he is a world-class songwriter with a twist on a power-ballad cliche about being sorry, “I’m sorry for you, not sorry for me” that you can’t help think is directed at his former bandmates. Regardless, it’s extremely rare to hear a defiant fuck-you thread in a song so well-constructed and lyrically devastating. And, like a great power ballad should, the chorus is instantly identifiable and catchy.

Duffy – Mercy

This is Amy Winehouse minus the dense Dennis Miller-like references to Roger Moore and grimy, drug-fueled obsessions with ex and current boyfriends. Try not to shake your ass to this groove. Duffy may be light and throwaway, but so were the Supremes and Temptations on many songs. A great retro-soul song.

I guess the rs list of 2008 albums of the year is about as important or relevant as the opinion of anyone who thinks Saturday night live is a news show. Both opinions of both forms of media / organization (in every area) come from a place wherein in each respective organization are filled with employees / owners who all believe they are a legend in their own mind; this is a place where even the slightest resemblance to reality is akin to something from the twilight zone. In other words…it is not reality.
I remember when rolling stone at least made an attempt (a small attempt) to be somewhat informed in its reviews, and tried to base them on being reasonable. In fact, rs used to put aside the delusion that everyone else existed because of rs instead of the reverse, and tried to reflect that reality.
The rs reviews these days, much in keeping with rs overall, are the equivalent of a sewage farm that has burst its banks and is now polluting its own environment and that of the environment of others. In other words, rs is now an inconvenient truth.
