Prince Premieres Four New Songs On L.A.’s Indie 103; New Album On the Way

Los Angeles’ rock radio station Indie 103 was “summoned” to Prince’s home this past week to preview his new album. According to the station’s “Mr. Shovel,” Prince “wants nothing to do with record labels, so he’s meeting with people to figure out how to operate at his level without a record label.” Following a long conversation with the Purple Rain star, the radio reps were played the new album in Prince’s home entertainment theater. “It’s heavy, rockin’, and our enthusiasm was immediate,” Mr. Shovel said. Prince permitted the station preview a few of the new songs, so that’s where we were today at 3 p.m.

The album kicks off with an explosive, four-minute instrumental before launching into the first song that was played on the radio… Prince covering Tommy James & the Shondells’ “Crimson & Clover,” with the Purple One altering the lyrics as he’s been known to do for covers. Keeping with the original, the vocals sound like Prince is submerged under water. Things deviate at the chorus, however, as Prince belts out the “ooh baby, I think I love you” part of Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady.”

“Colonized Mind” is another laid-back guitar joint — it seems like Prince wants people to stop dancing and just chill. More aquatic layering on Prince’s voice as he sings politicized lyrics along the lines of, “Did you know your record deal was another way for ‘The Man’ to steal.” Yeah, we don’t think Prince wants anything to do with record labels. The guitar solo is killer, out-guitaring the entirety of Planet Earth’s “Guitar,” before the chorus returns.

“Wall of Berlin” brings more guitar virtuosity. If he’s aiming to make an album similar to Side C of Electric Ladyland, he’s off to a good start. The songs also sound more intimate, like the Artist recorded these songs without any Revolution and New Power Generation behind him. “4ever” is the ballad, with Prince busting out the piano before being joined by backup singers. It’s not “Free,” “Ballad of Dorothy Parker” or “Sometimes It Snows In April,” but it’s still a solid, latter-day Prince slow dance as he ruminates about marriage and being with someone, well, 4ever.

And that’s all we get. For now, at least. Again, according to the DJs, Prince’s new album is finished and he’s just looking for a non-record label vessel in which to release it. We’ll keep you posted in what promises to be a busy year for Prince.

He should give Trent Reznor a call. He knows a thing or two about being successful without a record label.

Autohypnosis | 12/18/2008, 4:11 pm EST

Or Radiohead.

The Doctor | 12/18/2008, 5:20 pm EST

Luckily for NIN fans, Trent Reznor is not quite as paranoid as Prince

This is what we need…real music by a real musician. Forget the sugar on the radio for real music.

stebbes | 12/18/2008, 5:30 pm EST

Prince has released music without the help of record labels since the mid-nineties, long before Radiohead and other artists (remember the Webby Award for 1997’s Crystal Ball?). He surely knows how, but he wants to have it exactly his way. Genius is all I can say.

Miserable | 12/18/2008, 6:46 pm EST

Trent actually attended the private show did at his home when he released 3121. It was the same show that people who got the purple ticket from the 3121 album. But the only person Prince listens to is himself,so I would be surprised if he decides not to release the album at all.

P doesn’t need nobody to tell him how to do stuff without a record label. He originated that shit.

Actually, Prince has recorded without a record company for years, but has relied on them to actually manufacture and distribute for him. Usually, He just does a “one-off” deal with them so he’s not tied to a company beyond the one release at that time. I assume that he means that he wants to release and distribute without a record company as well. Seems entirely doable at this point for an artist of his stature and financial level. Aside from that, It’s exciting to hear that he’s possibly putting together an album heavy on guitars, ‘cuase he’s a genius with the guitar and it’d be great to hear him really go for it on an entire album. Turn it all the way to 11, Prince!

jarrudy | 12/19/2008, 11:15 am EST

i completely support any artist that circumvents record companies. they have price-gouging and lording over the radio for too long. i hope prince succeeds in completely cutting them out, including distribution and manufacturing. it will make a great template for the real talent out there to get records released and out to the people without having to sell their souls to the corporations.

I heard 2 late-didnt catch the the cast…any way 2 hear them now? I DONT WANT 2 DOWNLOAD them…just hear…although I once was a lifelong admirer, who now thinks his last few attempts have been pretty weak, and that he has turned straight up jackass especially to fams…I guess that I will always be curious, and HOPE that he still can get out of his own way and dig 4 the brilliance that I followed and loved for almost 30 years

cookied | 12/19/2008, 9:10 pm EST

Why doesnt he just do a Radiohead?

Lovell | 12/19/2008, 11:38 pm EST

Because Radiohead still needed a label to get their CD in stores.

if mozart was living in this present age

* * * * * * *

i heard your new songs via HQ’s radio show
i felt suspended in the here and now
it’s been so long since i felt this way
reflecting on past excitations as you played
recalling the moments of your past shows
how innately and indomitably you took the stage
smiling at the multitudes with unique style
the music you gave touched my heart
while nova stars beamed back in rhythms to your sounds

everytime you touched the guitar strings
seemed the vibrations bounced off heavens door
they echoed back over the crowd
i saw me, climbing riffing magical stairs
audaciously the time stood still,
i moved my body, your voice moved my soul
magically all the people moved aside
i feigned you played just for me
from the centerstage inside my mind

now your creativity you’ve shared once again
the messages you translated from your muses codes
my soul echos a sweet reflective refrain
many accolades 2 u for your music and songs
truly i thank God for you being in this space and time.
i’m proud to know of you in this millennium
my childrens children will know your name
they too will dance, sing and create to your melodies

thank you Prince Rodgers Nelson

Has a release date or tenative date been given yet?

jz | 1/13/2009, 6:29 pm EST

Remedial Hendrix: That’s actually a bite of Jimi’s version of “Wild Thing” by the Troggs, not “Foxy Lady.”

emil | 1/19/2009, 6:18 am EST

What jz said; do your homework.
The Troggs version even is in your your magazines’ 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time list. Allthough wikipedia says there’s a part of Foxy Lady lyrics in there, I think it’s simply an alteration he made to the Troggs’ verse “wild thing, I think I love you”.
