Have “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” Peaked?

12/17/08, 10:40 am EST

Despite the fact that rock video games are still flying off shelves this holiday season, analysts have begun to wonder whether the market for both Guitar Hero and Rock Band has reached its peak. In November, sales from Guitar Hero games were down 19 percent from the previous November, while Rock Band experienced a 65 percent increase thanks to supply constraints that stifled its sales last year.

Insiders believe part of the problem is that the franchises’ seemingly never-ending assembly line of new games is starting to exhaust consumers: World Tour is the sixth title in the Guitar Hero franchise since 2005 and a Metallica-inspired game is due out next year. Plus, the high cost of the full band kit for both GH and RB might turn off some consumers who are concerned about the recession. “I think the entire genre is definitely reaching its peak. With Guitar Hero, there’s been so many releases. Every couple of months there’s something new on this thing, and after a point consumers start to wonder what’s going on here,” said video game market analyst Jesse Divnich.

However, the new study completely omits the little detail that the creators of Rock Band have teamed with the most popular band in music history, the Beatles, to give the Fab Four their own game, which will more than likely be a worldwide smash given the catalog of songs. And there’s a endless list of all-star artists — Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones — from which Guitar Hero can potentially create games for. Plus, purchasing songs for the games has gained iTunes-like popularity, and both franchises are just now flourishing overseas. And don’t forget that DJ Hero on the horizon. “If this turns out to be a sustainable demand level, it’s still very profitable,” analyst Doug Creutz of Cowen & Co. said.

These games are very fun! But kids try learning and buying real instruments!

toby | 12/17/2008, 1:38 pm EST

Considering Guitar Heros are pretty much dead.. sad so sad, it’s no wonder the game is limited! Come back to the 5 and dime guitar heros, guitar heros!!!!

norm | 12/17/2008, 1:46 pm EST

I know it’s peaked because I am 35 and I just bought the game. When the old folks pick up a trend it immediately kills its pop relevance.

Go BEATLES!!!! That game will rock

CM | 12/17/2008, 3:04 pm EST

Lover of rock.. Well said, its kind of sad that kids would rather play nintendo then actually play a guitar or drums

Anonymous | 12/17/2008, 3:49 pm EST

these games are like masturbation compared with playing a real guitar(like sex with a real human)

picky picky | 12/17/2008, 3:50 pm EST

Yes, kids should pickup a real guitar and drums . However, isn’t this great exposure for some really great music? At least it is not Grand Theft Auto. These games do create excitement for the rock genre. Give some credit here.

Scott | 12/17/2008, 3:55 pm EST

I didn’t think Led Zeppelin would give out rights to their songs for Guitar Hero?

matt | 12/17/2008, 4:08 pm EST

Rock Band will carry on, because Harmonix knows how to make a solid game. Activision is beating a dead horse with the Guitar Hero license. They keep trying to make the games harder, but it ends up ruining the experience.

Zack | 12/17/2008, 4:09 pm EST

but these games do help people play REAL instruments why do u think i play drums now???

Anonymous | 12/17/2008, 4:21 pm EST

People should try to play a real guitar instead of punching keys in a fake plastic guitar.

Go VH! | 12/17/2008, 4:33 pm EST

Yes, yes… people would probably get more out of learning to play a real guitar. :) I think this is more or less “guitar karaoke” so far as most folks are concerned. I doubt we’re losing too many people to this game that would otherwise have become new Jeff Becks and Eddie Van Halens.

What’s silly to me about the constant iterations of the “Guitar Hero” and similar gmes is that there really needs to be only one game. Make one quality game, then just go all DLC from there. New songs, new “skins,” etc. People crave simplicity, and asking them to buy many slightly different versions of the same game won’t do it.

This kind of reminds me of the seemingly endless variants of “Street Fighter II.” XD

A Little Behind | 12/17/2008, 4:36 pm EST

Still trying to play “I love Rock and Roll” on expert on GH 1.

Scribe of the PJs | 12/17/2008, 6:41 pm EST

Dropping handles will get you everywhere, now bling to the sing that 2009 brings, and the plates converge on the largest Planet Earth of all, a Tolkien inhabited planet where these games and many more are played, including the game of Ring of Nebelung – these are great games by the way, we all agree on that, and the little number that the opposition needs, namely an every vowel and consant counts in music and in life, is fast fading away.

So, let’s give Rolling Stone a shoutout and we’ll handle with the best is what they’ll say, supurb writing and may the force be with Rock and Roll, which went down swinging when they elimianted festival seating and open floors at dynamic rock concerts, all the kids followed all of the super vocalists who chose the genre that enables minglign and dating, Rave style dance parties in 4,000 standing room only party venues with live DJ action and House Music.

The moment they remove the chairs after Reagan axed them after the Who incident in Cincinatti is the way to bring back rock, either that or selling your band’s live streaming link for every concert.

Paul J | 12/17/2008, 6:54 pm EST

Stop bothering with the ”learn to play a real instrument” crap. Kids want to have fun with the game and there’s some people that are not interested in playing a real guitar.

Why don’t you tell people to Stop playing first-person shooters and learn to use a real gun?

On the other hand, guitar hero metallica sounds cool, but rock band Beatles sounds even better. GO BEATLES GO!

Josh Feldman | 12/17/2008, 7:59 pm EST

The guitar hero craze was entirely in response to the teenage (and my) generation’s issue with short term vs long term satisfaction. Kids would much rather be able to play a cheap version of a song they know without having to work for it, rather that learning and instrument and playing the real thing. They don’t realize that they’ll get bored of the cheap version and that learning a real instrument has the potential to stay with them for the rest of their lives. However, its not all bad. I’m sure that it has inspired some kids to pick up the real thing. Also, when a band gets a song on GH, the publicity is huge, which will increase album sales and concert-goers. Which will in turn help, at least in a small way, the shitty state that record business has been in since I’ve been into music.

Aaron D. | 12/17/2008, 8:24 pm EST

I hate it when I hear some douchebag say something like “go get a real guitar.”

I also play fighting games. I suppose I need to go learn ninjitsu now……

kurtcobain | 12/17/2008, 11:20 pm EST

rock band 2 sucks it’s graphics suck and rock band is trying to catch up with them

Dan | 12/18/2008, 12:13 am EST

As a guitar teacher I can honestly say that Guitar Hero is the greatest thing to happen to my profession; I can’t even count how many students I have (or have had) who took up the real instrument after playing the video game counterpart. To all the people who say “Pick up a real guitar!’, many of them will and quite a few of them turn into great musicians.

gO GH! | 12/18/2008, 2:57 am EST

I think guitar hero should realese more good title music. There are many, like The CUre, Bob Marley, etc. you know what i mean more top artist not artist like they put on GH 80’s not all the artist there is worth the money. You know if people like me want to save money, i will still buy stuff but with quality not so-so. Anyway Guiatr hero world tour is extremely good and worth the money.

So dont worry guys be happy that guitar hero saves us people from being suck into this recession thing. Its our outlet. We dont want to cover our selves in the corner because of recession, lets rock!

Weegie | 12/18/2008, 3:35 am EST

We’re a nation of obese morons stabbing our chubby fingers at 4 colored plastic lightbars supposedly mimicking guitar playing. Dead-eyed lemmings marching to slow death. 18 % of American’s read ONE book a year. We rank LAST of developed countries in education. We are rightfully despised around the world. We couldn’t be more violent, sedentary, or ignorant.

zcameramann | 12/18/2008, 5:03 am EST

Hell I wish I could play anything lol but love to listen and without the me’s in the world, there would be no market for those of you who have the talent to play.

I don’t really understand why people hate kids that play guitar hero. So what if its fake? Its a video game! We play Madden and NBA Live and know its not real. No one ever says, “These kids are idiots, they don’t know how to play real football!” I think people should just stop bashing Guitar Hero for being a video game.
But I am seeing a decline in GH and RB popularity. The prices are expensive, and the only thing that they’ll get profit from is going to be downloadable songs, which currently RB is dominating.

Bodders1981 | 12/18/2008, 7:04 am EST

I agree with the comments made by ‘Go VH!’ concerning Downloadable content. There isn’t any need for them to keep pumping out more and more iterations of the same game, the mechanics havent really changed since GH1 and i can’t really see that anyone buys a new guitar based game for the graphics!

I like the idea of full album downloads like the new Metallica record for GH. It’s pretty cool to play through the whole record and helps you get into the songs even more.

Concerning the real guitar/game debate, isn’t it just about getting some mates over and rocking out. Never really saw it as in competition with real instruments, just a bit of a laugh

it will end well for rock | 12/18/2008, 11:33 am EST

these games are going to create great music in 10 years. all the kids playing these are being exposed to great rock music that is suddenly cool to them.

it also instills a desire to play real instruments in a lot of kids.

these games are going to bring in an entire generation of kids who like good rock music and many of them will be playing it with good influences.

Jon | 12/18/2008, 12:39 pm EST

I hope so, they are both a waste…only for those slacker kids who are too lazy to actually learn to play an instrument and think they are rock stars.

Anthony | 12/18/2008, 12:46 pm EST

Those people who say little kids just play these games are absolutely incorrect. I play a REAL instrument and have for a few years now. My friends all play REAL instruments and have for 4-5 years now. We all know how to rock in in real life, but we still enjoy these Guitar Hero and Rock Band games very much. So everyone should stop the “buy a real instrument” crap, because 90% of you probably can’t play a real instrument your self. I can proudly say I can play a real instrument and those little plastic ones.

GH Fan | 12/18/2008, 1:26 pm EST

I think that this is a great way to get gamers to move a little. Instead of our kids just sitting and playing games. They get friends to come over and compete and get moving more. Yes Americans have become Lazy, However this is one way to help get us moving again. You can’t play the Guitar sitting down very well. Lets encourage everyone to move a little more and play a fun game with good music. :)

white nigga | 12/18/2008, 4:21 pm EST

i dont care im just a big fan of guiatr hero games
fk rock band

Edz | 12/18/2008, 6:50 pm EST

Funny… the Maddan video game craze is still going strong

DarthFett26 | 12/18/2008, 10:27 pm EST

Saying folks should go out and buy real guitars instead of playing Guitar Hero is like me saying people should go out and buy real guns instead of playing Halo 3. Leave music and art to those who are truly artists. Let the rest of us posers have fun with the plastic guitars…

Eric | 12/19/2008, 12:37 am EST

I have been playing Rock Band I/II for the past year. There is no need to work on getting better graphics, just get a broader selection of DLC. How about some old school rock (Elvis) to gain a more diverse player group. Everyone, young and old, loves the Wii for the ability to bring people together. Let the music do the same for Rock Band.

Samson | 12/21/2008, 2:14 am EST

I just prefer to tell some students of mine the music selections I listen to are by bands that will get them laid. You can’t impress a girl by saying “hold on baby, lemme bring my XBox over.” I don’t picture a Pink Floyd Guitar Hero. Though that overpriced “Moog”-guitar is interesting.

1337 | 1/2/2009, 12:06 am EST

Rock band is better then guitar hero. Rock came up with the idea of making more then one instrument avalable. Guitar hero tried to catch up by making it too. Just like Xbox copying wii with the whole ‘mii’ idea, but making it worse.

-Goes to learn how to make a plasma sword and kill people with-

Undecided | 1/20/2009, 4:01 pm EST

We all know its a matter of opinion, and in my opinion, Rock Band kind of copied Guitar Hero because of the Guitar, but also introduced a mic and drum set. Guitar Hero has many knock off downloadable games on the internet, and Rock Band genertaed that retarded Wii game. Then came Rock Revolution, a combo of guitar and drums. So half GH and half RB. Both games are good, but in my opinion, Guitar was the first one out, and Im used to the layout of buttons (circles) not rectangles. The characters are terrible in GH though. They are too cartoony, but with Rock Band you have make your own characters. Now Guitar Hero World Tour, took Rock Band, and only did three things. More realistic drum set, actual in game characters (Ozzy, Travis Barker etc.) and build your Charcter and Instrument. As of now, GHWT just slighty makes it out on top, but RB isnt too far away. Lastly, who gives a **** which is better. Theyre both amazing games, so just play one, or both.

sck | 1/22/2009, 7:11 pm EST

I agree with lovers of rock!

There are products out there that have the look and feel of a game (www.iperform3d.com), but actually get you playing real instruments.

Education | 2/7/2009, 12:12 pm EST

Weegie, please provide a source for your STUPID comment. The US ranked 9 out of 30 in 2005 of industrialized nations.

Also, please please tell me why reading a book about vampires is better for kids then guitar hero?

At least video games sharpen coordinative skills.

John D. | 3/3/2009, 12:51 pm EST

I play both GH and RB, they each have their ups an downs, at the end of the day I don’t really care about specs or features, I just want decent music to play to! That said, Pink Floyd has incredible potential for a music game, with insane guitar solos that actually mean something in this industry!
