The Killers Kick Off “Day & Age” Tour That’s One Part Spectacle, One Part Heart

12/15/08, 10:39 am EST

From the Springsteen-like bluster of 2006’s Sam’s Town to the fist-pumping restlessness of leader Brandon Flowers, the Killers exude arena-rock excess like no other post-punk revivalists. So it was thrilling to see them squeeze their outsized show into San Francisco’s 2,250-capacity Warfield Theater for the first official stop on their world tour last Friday. The modest stage — as well as the venue itself — was packed: Strings of white Christmas lights hung on amplifiers festooned with flowers. Potted palms and cacti sat on and around the equipment, and a luminous five-foot “k” concealed the singer’s keyboard. Less ambitious bands would be dwarfed by such garishness, but this Las Vegas foursome (joined by touring member Ray Suen on keyboards, guitar and violin) packed anxious anthems like “When You Were Young” with similarly spectacular splendor.

Much of the Killers’ bravado rests on Flowers’ shoulders, which for the opening song “Human” were covered in feathers. The singer soon removed his birdlike jacket, emphasizing a slight frame that contrasted sharply with his sweeping gestures. Aside from guitarist Dave Keuning, who stepped onto a platform for his solos and waved his curly locks like a mid-’70s Peter Frampton, the others remained stationary, and no one interacted: This was Flowers’ show, and although gentle keyboard versions of “Smile Like You Mean It” and “Sam’s Town” provided a welcome break from bustling arrangements that elsewhere adhered to the band’s dense studio sonics, the focus rightly remained on the frontman. His eagerness to please was contagious: Flowers smiled often, and the crowd sang his words back at him without prompting. Such generosity fit the spirit of the season.

Set List:

“Human”
“Neon Tiger”
“For Reasons Unknown”
“Somebody Told Me”
“Losing Touch”
“Spaceman”
“Bones”
“Joy Ride”
“Smile Like You Mean It”
“Sam’s Town”
“Read My Mind”
“Mr. Brightside”
“All These Things That I’ve Done”

Encore:
“Jenny Was a Friend of Mine”
“Sweet Talk”
“When You Were Young”

I’m seeing them in January…and the set list seems a bit short, no? That’s the only thing that’s bumming me out about that show right now.

mAki | 12/15/2008, 12:33 pm EST

It would be nice if they used an actual picture from the show.

Nick | 12/15/2008, 12:37 pm EST

i was at this show, it was great, brandon was full of energy and gave it his all. wish there was more new songs in the setlist though.

ek | 12/15/2008, 1:09 pm EST

that wasnt the first official show for Day & Age… it kicks off in January

mAki | 12/15/2008, 1:25 pm EST

They came on at 915 and last song was 1030. 75 min show. I heard some people in line paying up to $500. That’s about $6 a minute.

Boston | 12/15/2008, 2:09 pm EST

cant wait to see these guys in boston in january. its gonna be awesome!

Cali | 12/15/2008, 2:18 pm EST

Given it was a make-up show I was hoping they would have played a longer set…But the concert was still awesome.

Leanie | 12/15/2008, 4:14 pm EST

I am so looking forward to seeing them in ‘09 for the Day and Age Tour. The Killers are fantastic live. And anyone who paid $500.00 for a ticket is a true fan. The Killers do not charge anywhere near those prices. Obviously that overpriced ticket was from a scalper. But that is The World That We Live In :)

m | 12/15/2008, 5:20 pm EST

they put on the best freaking show ever. they have so much passion into their performance and the vocals that brandon projects is really something to remember. the new stage set is ridiculously beautiful, the backdrop to the “k” keyboards, everything was amazing. i enjoyed every moment of it and the new setlist, is sure to please everyone :D
im looking forward to the second leg of the tour ;) wooo only a month left.

nica | 12/16/2008, 3:55 am EST

best live show i’ve ever seen not only the killers do, but anyone do. the energy was infectious. you couldn’t NOT have the time of your life. good stuff.

Baby Joel | 12/16/2008, 6:46 am EST

Can’t wait to see them in London…at the O2, which is going to be massively awesome.

Disappointed | 12/16/2008, 12:33 pm EST

I spent way too much money on this for an hour long set. I thought they were kidding when they said goodnight. Especially after Flowers apologized for cancelling and said they had a good set for us. Compared to the MMJ show at the Greek, this was a total waste of money. When you can only finish 3 beers in a set it is way too short.

SF baby | 12/16/2008, 12:36 pm EST

The opening band were hot. Neon Trees. I am such a fan now. 2 great bands in one night.

basser | 12/16/2008, 2:03 pm EST

I do hope they add to their set list. I saw them in Tulsa in 2005, and they were great (Ronnie Vannucci is the best under-35 drummer in rock today), but their set back then was kind of short. They played for about 70 minutes when I saw them. That’s a bit short. I expect that length at the state fair, but not at a “real concert.” Still, it was a good show. They just need to play 2 hours,

Jungleland2 | 12/17/2008, 2:47 pm EST

I prefer a well paced show to a “long for long’s sake” show. This set list looks fantasic. I was concerned that hte new album would be to synth-y for me ( I prefer Sam’s Town to the 1st one by a mile)but I have to say the new record is damn good.

They are playing a rather small venue in Atlanta, good for me.

s | 12/18/2008, 8:12 pm EST

the set list looks short… will it be longer in January? i thought that was when the official Day & Age tour started… oh well, it’ll be worth it!
p.s. Rolling Stone why do you guys not like The Killers that much? you’re articles always seem slightly… negative (especially this issue’s).

Gaby | 12/20/2008, 6:34 pm EST

This was a completely perfect show in every way!

I LUV The Killers!!! | 12/27/2008, 6:55 am EST

I need to know if they’ll be back here in the Bay Area b-cuz I missed it due to an illness!!! PLEASE HELP! I’m hearing different things, they began there tour here but the set list has hardly any new songs from Day and Age and I have seen them for every album made and they sing at lease 7-8 if not ALL the new ones. This was a rescheduled show that was due supposed to be in November so if there tour begins in January….doesn’t make sense. Gosh I hope they come back or I’m going to see them in Madison Square Garden in NY!

Jess!!! | 3/2/2009, 9:41 am EST

THEY WERE AMAZING!!!!!
Best song was easily all these things that ive done. Just a classic.
Surprisingly human and spaceman were done perfectly and were two of the best songs played. Im not too in love with their new album, but live I can understand why its made such a fuss.
