Guitarist Warren Haynes’ annual Christmas Jams are known for their jaw-dropping “wow” moments, but this year’s star-studded, 20th anniversary throw-down — held December 12th and 13th in Haynes’ hometown of Asheville, North Carolina — had more than usual. The one that silenced the 7,200 partiers who packed the Asheville Civic Center on the first night came when Haynes and one of his rock & roll heroes, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, appeared onstage together and played a stirring, acoustic guitar and mandolin version of the Zeppelin classic, “Going to California.”

When Haynes changed the lyrics to “Going to Carolina with an aching in my heart,” the crowd erupted. The duet came about three-quarters of the way into the Friday night show, which began with a performance by Haynes’ band Gov’t Mule, at about 7 p.m., and didn’t end until more than nine hours later, at 4:20 a.m. Saturday morning, when Haynes’ other group, the Allman Brothers Band, hit the last note of “One Way Out.”

Sandwiched in between were performances from the Derek Trucks Band, Joan Osborne, country singer Travis Tritt, bluegrass king Del McCoury jamming with gospel group the Lee Boys, and New Orleans funk band Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk. On Saturday night, Haynes, who sat in with every act on both nights, did it all over again, this time with Ben Harper, Steve Earle, Coheed & Cambria, Johnny Winter and and a slew of guests including Susan Tedeschi and Drive-By Trucker Patterson Hood.

For 26-year-old fan Jeremy Hargett, who drove 10 hours, from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, it’s a Southern rock family reunion he hasn’t missed for the past five years. “Warren does this for people who still love live music,” Hargett said during Osborne’s set. “It’s like a big family of musicians and fans that we’re all a part of. And you always see something that just blows you away.”

Once again, Warren’s throw down was one over the top moment after another. It’s like Warren is playing Emeril in the kitchen and throwing this and that in a big pot of jumbalia. Bam! Where else can one see a bluegrass legend, a rock and roll legend, a traditional southern gospel band and a New Orleans’ style Zydeco band all share the same stage and blow it out like they have done this a hundred times before? The Derek Trucks band was fabulous. Then having Greg and Warren making a point to come to the back of the stage and wave to us blowks at 3 am before they took the stage was great. Warren is a true gentleman whose passion for music and fans is evident in everything thing he does. I’m not old enough to have been at the Acid Test where the Grateful Dead played all night and Bill Graham bought everyone breakfast at sunrise, but hearing the Allman Brothers start into Mountain Jam at 3:50 in the morning gave me hope of seeing Warren serving up biscuits and gravy with a bowl full of grits. Somewhere in the middle of Mountain Jam, John Paul Jones slipped on to the stage with his bass while Warren led the band into Dazed and Confused. After a few minutes, the band slipped back into Mountain Jam and JPJ left the stage. And this was only night one!!! Thank you Warren. Thanks to all the performers and crew that made this happen. Merry Christmas.

It is awesome to see John Paul Jones sharing music with so many musicians. It is a testament to his professional musicianship. Who else would you choose to have on bass?

Wow!
I haved loved Warren from the first time I saw him play but the show in Ashville made me love him all over again,he is a master at all things music n bringing folks together to make magic!
I witnessed true magic indeed! The amount of fun packed into those hours would have been enough for a week long show but they packed it all in in just two days.
When JPJ took the stage and they tore it down everyone in the audience was smiling dancing singing and waving just made me remember what keeps me on the bus!
Thanks to all the folks that come together to make this thing the awesome memories that it is!

Xmas JAM | 12/22/2008, 12:36 pm EST

THE HOLY GRAIL OF ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC !! Warren lines up the best of the best, some off the radar, all off the charts. If you have never attended I offer a word of caution – XMAS JAM IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE.
*** THANK YOU WARREN ***

In all my 30 plus years of concert going this event never fails to get better and amaze… How Warren manages to pull this off is truly mind boggeling. The musican interactions and covers are always a “one off” thing. I seriously doubt you will ever hear a MOUNTIAN JAM>DAZED AND CONFUSED>MOUNTIAN JAM with JPJ on bass any time again… PS Gregg just wailed the cords on his B3 during D&C … freeking AWESOME… Warren always thanks the audiance at the end of each show… Warren …it the other way around…. THANK YOU WARREN FOR AN AWESOME CHRISMAS PRESANT!!!
