Axl Rose Posts About Keeping the Gn’R Name in New Message Board Chats

Axl Rose was back on the message boards this weekend, answering fan questions as well as penning a long explanation for why he continues using the name “Guns n’ Roses” despite the absence of the band’s other founding members. In a long post on the MyGNR forum entitled “My homework assignment, Just the tip… (of the iceberg),” Rose writes, “Why keep the name? I’m literally the last man standing. Not bragging, not proud. It’s been a fucking nightmare but I didn’t leave Guns and I didn’t drive others out.”

Rose also defends Chinese Democracy as a Gn’R album and not a solo record, saying, “A solo record would be completely different than this and probably much more instrumental. I made a Guns record with the right people who were the only people who really wanted to help me try, were qualified and capable while enduring the public abuse for years. The songs were chosen by everyone involved.” Rose also cites Pink Floyd as a band who, despite constant lineup changes of key members, continued to operate under their initial moniker. Read the rest of Axl’s detailed post, which touches on everything from past legal issues to the potential of a reunion with former band members, here.

Rose then returned to answering fan questions, this time over at the ChineseDemocracy.com board as Rose surprised the posters with a note entitled “Who wants to chat.” There, Axl answered questions about the possibility of returning to the road (”Not sure, looking at options and I would love to play Philly”), his rumored autobiography (”It’s not exactly an autobiography as much as legal record of every last detail of what went down with the breakup”), his favorite moments on Chinese Democracy and verifying which rumored song titles are, in fact, songs. More from that Q&A starts at around page 34 at this message board.

So much better than press interviews and hearsay. This is very cool. I would hope to see something similar from, let’s say, Bono, when U2’s album drops. Just a great way to get access and information from influential artists.

Jere | 12/15/2008, 2:52 pm EST

Very cool move on Axl’s part. I’m sure truth lies between Axl’s story and Slash’s, as Weiland’s breakup with VR lends *some* credibility to Axl’s pov.

Jeff | 12/15/2008, 2:53 pm EST

Awesome.

As Dave Grohl once said – ‘Hi Axl! Hi Axl!’

Glad he finally chose to have his say…hope there’s a lot more coming.

Great weekend to be a GN’R fan!

JP | 12/15/2008, 3:17 pm EST

I read most of his long screed. While I have a better understanding of why he kept the Guns N Roses name, I still don’t agree with it. It reminds me of how George W. Bush was so insulated that he lost his connection to what really was going on. I think Axl, in an effort to save Guns N Roses, tried to keep the band going when there was no band there.

respectfully JP | 12/15/2008, 3:32 pm EST

That analogy is quite not apropos. Equating Axl’s decision to keep the GNR name with a completely incompetent world leader skews our priorities just a tad.

Greendale | 12/15/2008, 4:19 pm EST

I’m as critical of him as anybody, but it’s cool that he does stuff like this.

By the way, on chats, can people just skip the “Hey, when are you coming back to ######??” questions? The man has been hiding for 15 years and you want to ask him when he’s coming to Arkansas????

James Z | 12/15/2008, 4:56 pm EST

I think its cool he’s giving people a chance at some back & forth….but shouldn’t you really judge him ( if at all )on the music instead of all the other, been there done that type of mudslinging & lowbrow B.S. people are engaging in…He’s an artist sharing his Artform, not a president or politician lieing too, and or hurting people Worldwide….It’s Music people !!!don’t like it…simply don’t listen….focus your energy on more important issues & let the Music help heal you after.

surforia | 12/15/2008, 4:56 pm EST

Axl rocks.

DiamondDavidson | 12/15/2008, 6:20 pm EST

Axl probably doesnt want to talk in person because he is sick and tired of the bullshit some people carry on. Hey just leave axl alone! He is a great artist and has a good voice after all these years!

Axl you rule!!!!

Nathan | 12/15/2008, 7:24 pm EST

Axl is The Man. Who else would spend that much time on a message board answering fans’ questions? Not many other famous musicians!

Robert | 12/16/2008, 5:23 am EST

AXL IS THE MAN !!!!!

Gooner14 | 12/16/2008, 2:54 pm EST

the dust has finally started to clear.

Welcome back Mr. Rose.

____________________________ _______

Your knee-jerk reaction to my post missed the point of what I was trying to say. I wasn’t saying that Axl decision to keep the name was as important as being President of the US.

His explanation of why he kept it reminded me of how George W. Bush comments were at odd with the realities of the world. Axl Rose’s determination to keep Guns N Roses alive blinded him to the fact that the band is over. No matter how many replacement members he hires, he is still the only one with any say about the musical direction of the band. That what makes “Chinese Democracy” a solo project. Does anyone actually believes that the replacement members contribute anything to the album except what Axl told them to play?

Mykl | 12/16/2008, 4:53 pm EST

”Not sure, looking at options and I would love to play Philly”

Yeah nice little jab there jackass…

(can you tell I am from Philly and was there during that show when his ego I guess “had a sore throat”)

DJ Rob | 12/17/2008, 12:34 am EST

Axl clearly had the final say in the creative process, but I think the other members, especially Buckethead and Finck, did have a lot to do with that process. i dont know if you can just tell someone to play the intro to better or shacklers.

Ari | 12/17/2008, 1:59 am EST

Axl sure does things in style. This was totall unexpected and super cool. Who else would talk about EVERYTHING in an inimitable manner which only Axl can muster? “Dexter” kills me…the man’s hilarious. As much as I love Axl and have been a diehard fan since their Illusion days, new Guns is never gonna be considered to be “Guns” simply because the original lineup was so brilliant together. Ever seen actors who’ve been typecast forever coz of a single role? Perception creates reality. Memory triggers association. Can Paul ever call his band The Beatles? It’d be a huge joke. Now it’d be great if Slash and Axl met, had a beer, hugged and said “Let’s blow the roof off this mofo!!” What a day THAT would be.

oneAXLinamillion | 12/17/2008, 11:18 am EST

Axl has spoken and that’s enough for me..

thanks

Joe | 12/17/2008, 12:13 pm EST

best line on the album

Truth is the truth hurts
Don’t you agree?
It’s harder to live with the truth about you
Than to live with the lies about me

Nobody owes you
Not one goddamn thing
You know where to put your
“Just shut up and sing”

Beautiful.

repsectfully JP | 12/17/2008, 12:19 pm EST

and again, JP I did not equate Axl’s decision with importance of position, the realities of the “rock and roll world” have nothing to do with the so-called “real world”. Axl obviously does not want to go completely public, but he does want his fans to know what’s going on. that much is clear. What’s really going on is that Axl has kept the band name and moved forward. Slash knew the band name Guns and Roses meant nothing without Axl. He’ll never admit that side.

David and David | 12/17/2008, 12:22 pm EST

The only somehwat weak track on this album is “IRS” in my opinion. everything else is rock solid. “This I Love” is one of the best ballads I have ever heard.

JP | 12/17/2008, 2:35 pm EST

Well, Respectfully JP, that is my problem with “Chinese Democracy”. It’s Guns N Roses in name only. It seems like a fraud. It doesn’t sound like Guns N Roses. There are a few riffs here and there that recalls other GNR songs, and of course Axl singing. That’s about it. It going to take me a few months, once the hype dies down, to listen to this album on it’s own merit. Also, try to ignore what it says on the cover.

It’s simple Rock And Roll 101: If a member of a band records an album without the rest of the band, it’s called a solo album.

RJP | 12/17/2008, 3:33 pm EST

You wont get past the fact that Axl used the name “Guns and Roses” to record under.

“It going to take me a few months, once the hype dies down, to listen to this album on it’s own merit. Also, try to ignore what it says on the cover.”

So If it were called “Roses’ Guns” it would be perfectly OK. No other change other than the name. Ok I see your viewpoint but I respectfully disagree. I accepted this album from first listen without worrying about the name. I would have been more disappointed if Axl had regurgitated the same riffs on AFD (And Contraband and Libertad, for that matter). That would have been MORE of a fraud. Hail Axl for expanding his musical horizons and not falling victim to any of this decadent cock rock that permeates the airwaves, regardless of name.

fydpbivsoqmsp | 12/25/2008, 6:47 am EST

nice

Velvet Revolver Fan | 12/27/2008, 2:55 pm EST

I think that Axl needs to start facing reality here. He lost slash, Izzy,Duff, and Matt. If I were to go to a person who had never heard the GnR before and played Chinese Democracy and then Appetite for Destruction, they would probably say that there is no chance in hell that it is the same group. Legally, they are wrong, but in truth we know that they are correct. That would sort of be like saying Ozzy Osbourne (the cover band) is really Black Sabbath. But, Ozzy is just Ozzy, and the MAJORITY MEMBERS of Black Sabbath have the name of the group. I think Velvet Revolver should be allowed the GnR title.

william thomas | 12/29/2008, 4:23 pm EST

axl is my hearo but i reacon he should do a tour for the new cd then for the last ever tour do one big guns and roses reunion with all the origanals members in it and some that are playing now for the band axl has the right to keep the name cause after all he wasen’t the one that quit and left the band like slash who did and others thats mine opinion but axl has still got it guns and roses for ever :)

Dulce | 12/30/2008, 6:53 am EST

Slash fans must admit that Slash is a liar.

Slash was angry with Axl, that’s why slash said a lot of lies.

Dulce | 12/30/2008, 6:55 am EST

Good evening. I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.
I am from Leone and learning to read in English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: “What do you hate to draw? Book of the month how to draw I lbe using your tips to draw for my students.”

Thanks for the help ;-) , Nixie.
