The best albums of 2008: We’ve showed you ours, now you show us yours. TV on the Radio’s Dear Science was the album of choice over here at Rolling Stone, but is it the readers’? Let us know your favorites, and on Monday we’ll reveal the winners of the Readers’ Top Albums of 2008. If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that we’re probably going to get comment-bombed with votes for both Nine Inch Nails’ The Slip and Killers’ Day & Age, so rally the troops if you want your favorite to have a shot at Number One. And no, In Rainbows doesn’t count. Let the voting begin!

Best Album of 2008: Vampire Weekend.
I would give a list, but people have mentioned most of my other favorites, and they’re not worth mentioning twice, even to vote on.
Also, I have to ask: Do you guys really think Viva la Vida is the best of 2008? Seems every other poster does . . .
mr. man | 1/6/2009, 9:37 am EST
It’s amazingly interesting how i started out poised that AC/DC was gonna win it all and then came weezer and the offspring (yeah they also put out an album this year) then came November
my vote:
THE KILLERS: DAY & AGE
Shaun Shakes | 1/5/2009, 5:41 pm EST
1 New Amerykah Part 1 (4th World War)
2 Fleet Foxes
3 Day & Age
4 Modern Guilt
5 Viva La Vida

Oh yeah, and one more thing. Brandon was right, Sam’s Town IS one of the greatest albums in the last 20 years, I just hope it doesn’t take that long for you to realize that. Please let that Neon Tiger run!!
Cameron | 12/30/2008, 10:40 pm EST
the killers are the best band in the world, and they never get the credit they deserve. cldplay is great but come on rolling stone, it’s about time you gave brandon and the boys a cover!!!
Serena L | 12/29/2008, 11:24 pm EST
the killers
hahah i agree with Anonymous, you’ve gotta listen to them!
and wait what is your intro supposed to mean ‘comment bombed?’ maybe people just like them?
Anonymous | 12/29/2008, 11:09 pm EST
1. The Killers- Day & Age
(yup rolling stone, that’s right. You have to listen to their albums to really hear and understand their songs. like ‘are we human or are we dancer?’ you wouldn’t understand that the first time you listen to it but that is what is so great about the killers, there is SO much more behind their music then Kanye or whoever, and you can tell they really mean or have reason about what they sing about)
2. Coldplay- Viva La Vida

In Rainbows should count. Physical release on 1.1.08. Guess my vote goes to The Killers, but this is coming from a huge fanboy who hasn’t been able to experience some of the years best music.

Bloc Party- Intimacy
Keane- Perfect Symmetry
Death Cab- Narrow Stairs

For Tavian Go,
Well, to me it was one of the greatest albums of the last 20 years. Loved the Massey Hall show - it was amazing. Can’t wait for ACC!!! Keep the incredible music coming!
Intern Allison | 12/16/2008, 12:00 am EST
I would just like to respond to “Rolling without Slipping.” I appreciate your enthusiasm, I really do, but Justice’s “Cross” came out in 2007, and therefore could not and would not be included in any year-end lists for any magazine in 2008, not just Rolling Stone. A little fact-checking can save you a lot of embarrassment.

Day & Age - The Killers
In a time when we’re fed “canned pop jobs” (Britney Spears, anything from Idol/Simon Cowell), The Killers have got to get lots of props for an awesome album, combining sounds from “Hot Fuss” and “Sam’s Town” brilliantly!!

I’m sure people as smart as those who work at RS would be able to construct a poll that disallowed multiple votes seeing as they have such a problem with the popularity of Day & Age.
Suck it in and accept it: The Killers Day & Age for album of the year, honourable mention to Coldplay Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends and MGMT Oracular Spectacular
Luke | 12/14/2008, 6:41 pm EST
Brian Wilson’s Lucky Old Sun is brilliant, just beautiful music. His best solo work by far. It’s about the only current music I want to listen to. I play it over and over and appreciate it more with each listen. It is so emotional.

easily, DAY & AGE - THE KILLERS.

JP | 12/14/2008, 4:53 pm EST
I’ll try to keep this list short.
1. Amanda Shaw - Pretty Runs Out: I know nobody heard of her. She a teenage violin prodigy who combined cajun music with pop/rock sensibilities. It puts all the overhyped mainstream music to shame.
2. Ben Folds - Way To Normal: All the negetive reviews focused on the lyrics that criticize how superficial people are. If there was a message that needed to be heard, that would be it.
3. Lucinda Williams - Little Honey: This album could be called “Happy Woman Blues” if she hadn’t used that title already. Also a bonus, she did an AC/DC song better than AC/DC did this year.
4. (tie) Willie Nelson - Moment Of Forever & Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis - Two Men With The Blues: I know ties are lame. I just have a hard time just picking which of these 2 excellent Willie Nelson albums were better.
5. Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons…: Wow! Rap music that’s actually about something. Watch out kids! This could start a new trend.
6. REM - Accelerate: Michael, Peter, and Mike discovered that could rock as hard in the studio as they have been doing on stage.
7. My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges: A critically acclaimed album that as fun to listen as it was deserving of the praise.
8. The B-52’s - Funplex: Dance music that actually rocks and fun to listen to.
9. Kaiser Chiefs - Off With Their Heads: Another brilliant collection of barbed pop-rock songs from one of the most unjustly overlooked british rock bands.
10. Shelby Lynne - Just A Little Lovin’: She did something that Duffy failed miserably at this year. Incorporate Dusty Springfield music into something unique and personal. In Shelby Lynne’s case, she covered her ubiquitous songs and made them her own.
I’m sure The Fireman would have made my top ten list. However, I just got the album yesterday, and I haven’t listened to it yet. I’m also a fan of The Killers, but I’m not in a hurry to get their album. I hope it’s as good as other people voting make it out to be.

Rock & Roll Daily Blog: “…so rally the troops if you want your favorite to have a shot at Number One. And no, In Rainbows doesn’t count.”
Actually Rolling Stone, In Rainbows didn’t count last year either, because that album sucked! It was full of ambient noises and bland songs.

Guns and Roses - Chinese Democracy
If this album had been released in February instead of November, it would have sunk in by now that Axl has knocked one out of the park. Day and Age is a good album. CD is a great album.
Brian | 12/14/2008, 1:59 pm EST
Well, I guess not very many people agree with me but I thought Chinese Democracy and Narrow Stairs were by far the best two albums of the year. Both are clearly better than Day and Age or Viva la Vida for that matter…

I really don’t get the “fuss” over Day and Age. Good album but not even their best and certainly not the best album of the year.
That would go to Guns and Roses’ “Chinese Democracy”. Very close second the Verve’s “Forth” and coming right up behind ‘em both “Dig out your Soul” by Oasis. Ironically enough all 3 bands were big in the 90’s, and all three have distinctly different styles.
And the Winner is..... | 12/13/2008, 8:34 pm EST
1)GNR “Chinese Democracy”
2)Coldplay “Viva La Vida”
3)Weezer “The Red Album”
Honorable mention
BB King “One Kind Favor”
Portishead “Third”
Metallica “Death Magnetic”

Rolling Stone, why is it so difficult for you to give The Killers the recgonition they deserve? If they win, which is most likely, can you not put ridiculous and insulting comments like when they won the best album artwork? They’re a great band and they deserve to win. Go Killers!

This year had a lot of new releases from past favorites, and new blood. My list is made up of albums that were not only good, but grabbed me and demanded to be listened to over and over again.
01.Vampire Weekend-S/T
with it’s Paul Simon vibe, early 80’s CBGB bounce, and indie style, this one won my top spot.
02.Fleet Foxes-Ragged Wood
soft and sparse folk has become the new grunge these days, and with it’s smooth harmonies, the Foxes are this years winners.
03.Coldplay-Viva la Vida
Stepped forward and, admittedly, embracing what has been happening in small clubs around the world, the newer version of U2 has brought something new to mainstream pop music.
04.Killers-Day & Age
This new album fixes the missteps of Sam’s Town, and expands with even more ambition.
05.Nico Muhly-Mothertongue
The best album 97% of these readers never heard of.
06.Erykah Badu-Amerikah
The great soulster is back and pushing the boundaries of r&b, and funk, while bringing it back to it’s glory days.
07.Death Cab for Cutie-Narrow Stairs
I didn’t even like these guys until this album. It takes the indie/emo of their past and reaches beyond to grab at true rock, and progressive folk.
08.M83-Saturdays=Yout h
Lush atmospheres curl around these classic 80’s sounding showgazers. Possibly the most beautiful album of the year.
09.Mars Volta-Bedlam in Goliath
Their last couple of albums were alright. Focused too much on jamming. But this release brings back songs that bend and twist and rock and pop, and get stuck in your head like a screwdriver.
10.Kanye West-808’s and Heartbreaks
Despite his use of autotune, this album is an icy masterpiece, stepping outside of hiphop, outside of r&b, and just working its own rhythm.
Got to mention these:
Elvis Costello-Momofuku
best thing he’s released in 15 years.
Gojira-Thw Way of all Flesh
best metal album, hands down.
MGMT-Oracular Spectacular
adhd generation, bouncing off the walls, tripping out of their heads, and yet still making a really great album.

Viva la Vida is probably the most overrated sh*t ever.
How can…out of all the songs…Beyonce was determined to be the number one single? I mean, really now. I don’t think the list of best albums this year was determined on pure merit and substance, but rather on album sales and hype (which fell through).
Here are the best albums of this year:
m83 saturday=youth
mgmt oracular spectacular
tv on the radio dear science
Drive by truckers- brighter than creation dark( wtf, this wasn’t even on the list???)
Justice- cross (wtf again?)
Girl Talk feed the animals
Jaguar Love (hellO???) take me to the sea (can’t believe this wasn’t included)
K’naan - the dusty foot philosopher
lil wayne of course
portishead- third
Vivian girls
(spare the matter-of-fact listing, I don’t feel like writing some elegant, descriptive garbage like “This is a return to basics for this Los Angeles trio who have been mixing histrionics and distortion for the past decades. A clever, often unpretentious studio album was bound to happen blah blah
