With Pavement’s Brighten the Corners reissue out now, we reminisce about that glorious night in October 1997 when the band played Paul Shaffer to Space Ghost’s David Letterman on Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. Rocking cartoon drums in front of a green screen, a camera-shy Stephen Malkmus and friends apparently miss their cue to stop playing as they intrude on Space Ghost’s interview with actress Goldie Hawn, thus sparing the audience from listening to five minutes of The First Wives Club promotion. It’s a performance even Zorak could be proud of.
