Brian Wilson’s That Lucky Old Sun tour recently descended on New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom and Rolling Stone was there for an exclusive look as the band prepared to take the stage. Watch as Wilson and his bandmates discuss their pre-concert rituals, catering tray favorites and Wilson’s own desire to sit in the audience hours before the concert in order to “soak in” the environment. Plus, Wilson treated us backstage to intimate solo performances of “Long Promised Road” and the tune he deems as the greatest song he’s ever written. Watch all this and much more as we take you behind the scenes at the Brian Wilson show.

In an age when any idiot with a record deal gets called a genius, it’s nice to see that true greatness is still recognized.

Was at this concert and now know why it was late starting
It was GREAT show and hearing TLOS live showed that it is spirit – personified. It sounded better live than on record. Amazing artist – amazing band. Pure amazement

He’s the greatest musician in the history of the world!

Brian Wilson was never half the genius McCartney was. Not even close. But unfortunately for McCartney, critics only find you to be a genius if you get shot or go crazy.

this is not a contest, there can be more than 1 genius. In fact there can be many. Brian Wilson is a national treasure and should be seen as such. Let’s remember too that these guys in his band have for the most part, been with him since before he toured! They love and support him in a manner that makes it possible to be “Brian Wilson”.

it is a small miracle and great luck that Brian is still around and is able to produce such music as his latest release that touches people’s hearts and souls. Happiness and a long life to you Brian from Europe

Guy hasn’t released a good tune in 35 years. Stop kidding yourself.

I like most of his music-His latest(Lucky)-sucks!

Whether you think he is a genius or not there is something about the music of Brian Wilson that is timeless and is enjoyed by all ages. At this show I stepped out of my seat back in the Orchestra and walked unimpeded up the aisle to the stage. There, during the end of the show and encore a young girl danced while on her dad’s shoulders. One of the band members hoisted her off dad’s shoulders and onto the stage where she danced with a huge smile to Fun, Fun, Fun. I’m sorry but I just think that’s what it’s all about. Thanks Brian.

No good tune in 35 years? Try “Love & Mercy” and “Midnight’s Another Day”. Their stripped-down versions especially are beautiful.
David | 12/15/2008, 11:37 pm EST
I agree with likearollingnick, L&M & MAD are great songs. So he hasn’t made an album like Pet Sounds again, who has? All his solo albums have had moments of pure quality, all you have to do is listen to them.

Brian Wilson is the greatest song writer to ever live.

In the winter of ‘66 the Beach Boys returned from an english tour carrying the annual NME award, and found Brian working on a full scale version of the modular framework he perfected on Good Vibrations. The group’s break down from that promising moment is one of the greatest legends in the history of rock and roll. Wish they could release an official version of the original SMILE.

I had the opportunity of seeing Brian Wilson in Jackson Hole last August. While he seems to have lost some stage presence and sensibilities (checking his watch on stage, some vacant looking around… yeah he’s old I know), it was an incredible show and a wonderful experience. Even if his stage presence has faded, his song writing ability is still leagues ahead of everyone else.

The first long play record album I ever purchased was in 1965, The Beach Boys “All Summer Long” released in 1964.Sure,the Lennon/McCartney team and the Glimmer Twins [Jagger/Richards] came up with a couple of good tunes…..Brian had no “gegenueber” [partner] when he penned Pet Sounds/Good Vibrations/Heroes+Villains,Bri an is the Mozart of our time.

re: tofu and rice
Brian had significant songwriting partnership with Van Dyke Parks on all of the records you refer to.

I’ve loved Brian Wilson’s music since I was seven years old, in Elementary school, and saw an after school beach party type show that featured The Beach Boys & Lesley Gore, plus a few others, but these two stood out and were reigning on the radio/charts at the time. They sung on the beach and the ocean was the scenic background. I can still see/hear Lesley singing “You Don’t Own Me”…this had to be circa 1963-64. I love Brian’s 2008 “Lucky” album! He’s brilliant!

Brad, are you kidding? Do you know music? Your comment almost didn’t merit any response, but I couldn’t help set you straight. McCartney is great, but he has a lot of horrible schlock he did. He had a song writing partner where Brian didn’t. And he didn’t mix a lick, while Brian was master of the board.
Seriously, get your facts straight.

Brian Wilson has kept music alive for over 45 years. Paul Anka once stated amazement that Good Vibrations cost $75,000 to record. What a pittance for such a classic from such a respected musician…and Brian did it his way.
brendanchenowith | 1/5/2009, 6:24 am EST
To rzzzzz, the original Smile album is still in fragments, so it can never truly be released. Mike Love seized control over the Beach Boys tapes and would not consent to such a release even if the first Smile was complete, as he was very averse to that album. He was afraid it would make the Beach Boys look bad.
MIKE NOT BRIAN? | 1/20/2009, 8:15 pm EST
Are you telling me it is mike stopping the release of the Beach Boys SMILE alum and not Brian??? Even after Brian releasing the album himself and having sucess with it?? That is truly crazy!!!! if true! Tom Brady

Going to see Brian and the Beach Boys at a FREE concert tonight in a parking lot in Anchorage, Alaska and I can’t wait! Never thought it would happen!
