Axl Rose Talks “Chinese Democracy,” Kanye, “Better” Video In Gn’R Message Board Chat

As Chinese Democracy struggles to sell copies, many place the blame on both Best Buy’s lack of promotion and Axl Rose’s reluctance to be interviewed. After last night, strike Rose’s silence from the blame game as the Guns n’ Roses singer took to a pair of Gn’R message boards to both answer questions and engage in flame wars with fans. Rose kicked off the interview in the most Rose-like way possible, as evidenced by this exchange, via the MyGNR forum:

Fan:
Imagine you post on the Britney Spears fan forum. Now imagine the son of Britney’s maid posting on the forum and everyone gushing over him because of his association to Britney. Nevermind that he never posts anything notable and is generally annoying.

Axl:
Might as well start here… You’re a little cunt and since you’ve been posting you’ve pretty much always been a little cunt. Blind accusations and insults by an anonymous coward and whiny shit stirrer aren’t impressive or needed by anyone. Everyone else…talk with your administrator. Who wants to chat?!!

Fan:
Pot meet kettle.

Axl:
Not real bright are ya?

Fan:
No, not really.

Then again I’m not the one who needs a house keeper to wipe my ass.

Axl:
Ah… another cunt! So shocking!

From there, tempers would cool and Axl would actually unleash some pertinent information. For starters, regarding why Axl likes to make fans wait upwards of midnight when performing live, “I’ve been an after midnight type since I was sneakin’ out of my house in Jr. High. With old Guns we preferred 12am or so. When we moved to theaters etc obviously that changes but it’s never changed inside me. Doesn’t matter what I do so generally that’s when I’m more myself. This isn’t to mess with anyone that has an early schedule to keep it’s just personal preference.”

As for Chinese’s lack of promotion, Rose blamed it on bad contract negotiations, but promised that a video for “Better” — (Number 19 on our Best 100 Singles of 2008) — should be out next week. As for losing to Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak in the charts battle, Rose said “I met Kanye at the Versace awards. He was very gracious. I love Gold Digger and told him so. I’m a big fan of his stage performance as he seems to go for it physically which I relate more to. B4 r release I sent him a msg that any nonsense from the media had nothing to do with us and wished him the best. I’m humbled we’ve done as well as we have considering.”

Rose also went on to talk about Buckethead, Brian May’s removal from Chinese, his favorite characters in Atlas Shrugged, Nyquil and much more. You can read all the insanity that occurs when Axl randomly trolls his own message boards here and here.

Typical, he blames everything on somebody else. He mentions the album cover and liner notes weren’t done to his liking or original wishes, and that new “complete” ones will be release eventually. You take 13 fucking years making the album, and you can’t get this stuff taken care of in the mean time? Unbelievable.

Four Nick Eight | 12/12/2008, 2:41 pm EST

Good enough is not good enough for Axl. Whether you call him a perfectionist or an asshole, he very likely released the most challenging and innovative rock and roll record this year. I think he has a point with the promotion, no? You couldnt walk into a Wal-Mart without hitting life-size cutouts of AC/DC on every turn. It wont matter. The very definition of rock and roll is Axl Rose.

Anyone who knows the story of Axl knows that his ventures into drugs and alcohol were very limited compared to his bandmates back in the late 80’s and by the time of the Use Your Illusion albums he was relatively sober. His issues are more related to his mental state and his psychological demons. Rock on, Axl.

Its a Great CD !!! Lead on Capt’, I got 10 the 1rst day for those who could’nt make the drive…

The new album is awfull.

Jeff | 12/12/2008, 6:16 pm EST

Joker – it’s spelled “douche”, with an “e”.

And you’re wrong. The album is amazing from start to finish.

Chinese Democracy is a great album. Axl obviously is meticulous about what he wants out of his songs, and he has achieved a new twist on what was started with the Use Your Illusion albums. If you listen to all four albums (AFD, UYI I and II, CD) from beginning to end, it’s three different projects. Axl has a composers’ mind, a rock and roll voice, and a defiant attitude. His mindset is progression, not stagnation. This album ain’t for everybody. If you don’t have “patience” and can’t settle into an album, then you probably won’t get it. I am on spin 20 and it’s really really good. Top 3 favorite tracks:

“Sorry”, just an awesome power ballad without the typical cheesy lyrics, wailing vocals and over-the top guitar solos.

“Scraped”, ‘don’t you try and stop us now!” great chorus, great horse-gallop rhythm, with that old-style AFD paranoia in the lyrics, but more uplifting.

“There Was a Time”, an epic song telling a bittersweet story that could be about a broken band or a broken relationship. Great coda, loving the blend of instruments and his vocals in a mighty crescendo.

The only song I don’t quite connect with is “I.R.S”, and I think its only because the vocals sound out of sync with the rhythm. The chorus is good. Every other song on this album is top notch. A solid 4 out of 5 stars.

DiamondD | 12/12/2008, 6:56 pm EST

Axl you are one of my favorite front men of all time, but I wish you could be a little more talkative, im not so talkative either but i think it would really help sales and people would get more into it music has fallen after the early ninetees

Hey Rolling Stone! you have another pictue, why alqays put the worst??

Captian America | 12/12/2008, 7:22 pm EST

Axl’s a dick. Is music in such a state of decline that we’re actually still talking about this turd? In the time it took him to make one album Led Zeppelin had their entire career! How’s that for perspective?

Captian America | 12/12/2008, 7:25 pm EST

Oh yea. Axl, get a fucking haircut. It barely looked good on Bo Derek. You just look like fool. Take that bandana and just cover your face and do us all a favor.

Nick Bridwell | 12/12/2008, 8:05 pm EST

It is all relative. If he were conforming and having concerts at 8pm, spending every ten minutes doing an interview on his days off then some asshat would be on here saying he’s a media whore. At least he’s sticking to his “guns”.

CR1ZZ | 12/12/2008, 8:07 pm EST

Axl is the worst personality in rock music history next to bret michaels. But a guns’n'roses reunion is highly needed. Axl rose is sinking deeper and deeper and slash was never as good as he was with roses with stone temple pilots and velvet revolver, those two were alright, but guns’n'roses rule. They really need a reunion show at least. Axl needs to stop thinking he was all guns’n'roses was. Granted it would’nt be roses without him but you need the whole band for guns’n'roses. He’s a great singer but that album was pretty pathetic.

CR1ZZ | 12/12/2008, 8:10 pm EST

compared to guns’n'roses albums I mean. The new album is way better than some.

ffffFFFFFFFF AXL WAS ON LAST NIGHT AND I MISSED IT!

Steven Millan | 12/13/2008, 4:45 am EST

Oh,all of the drama and chaos on that GN’R forum board, for Axl & (his version of)GN’R took so long to make “Chinese Democracy” (without being aware of what’s the current top musical acts and artists)that it’s no surprise that it bombed in a major way, with its being released in November(the month where hundreds of new CDs are released, with half of them bombing),its similar Limp Bizkit/”The Unspeakable Truth”-esque non-publicity and Axl’s refusal to do any interviews, for Axl will be lucky if any of his ex-GN’R mates are up for an old school GN’R reunion(if it ever will happen). And BTW:any ever notice that the front cover for the “Chinese Democracy” album looks more like a Van Halen CD front cover(than a traditional GN’R CD front cover) ?

I love the album, and think Axl can do whatever he wants with his music and be whatever he wants, although I would prefer not to have to wait another million years for the next album. Hopefully he has earned enough credit to be able to publish even without having to do promo and other stuff he does not care to do…

Leonardo | 12/13/2008, 8:41 am EST

Axl is back…thanks GOD…music today (with the exception of Ninne Inch Nails and Bruce Springsteen) is so boring….the world need such a masterpiece as Chinese Democracy…Axl is the best!!!

Dexter | 12/13/2008, 10:22 am EST

Axl is still relevant. People keep wanting to talk about him and he keeps the Internet blogs busy with gossip and heated exchange. After all these years, just the mention of his name still raises blood pressure and gets the casual fan worked up. Fans believe him to be a Rock God and icon. and the doubters think he is a joke, either way, he won’t, can’t, go away. He has really gotten under the skin of the collective American conscience. Love him or hate him, we can’t forget him. In a weird way, people love to hate him and have developed a “traumatic bond” with Axl. They, we, need him. He is a nostalgic throw back to the glory days of rock n roll excess and pre-Internet world. We love Axl

I was reading the transcripts of the message boards and I couldn’t help thinking…Axl is doing it his way, giving access to fans and to hell with the press….When Bono blogged on RS a while back about BOY and the bands influences I got a similar feeling….these are the two biggest egos in rock and roll and they still want their fans to have access. Of course fans want to hear about the acrimony with the old GNR but AXL being as diplomatic as can be wants to talk about the current album and upcoming projects. I also found it interesting that he could care less about the Dr. Pepper fiasco. Axl is all about the music. That is much too rare nowadays.

regardless of the charts, the album is sick and that’s all that really matters.

Schwinn Biker Dude | 12/13/2008, 5:19 pm EST

Aside from reading these message boards and being jealous that I wasnt a part of it, Axl seems to be an extremely intelligent, paranoid, impatient, passionate, and fiery individual dedicated to his craft. I like the fact he chose this method to communicate with his fans. I also like the fact that with almost no mainstream promotion this album is doing well in a very limited market. It proves that if the songs are good, they will find a home. Welcome back, Axl. Rock and roll and your fans missed you.

Why didn’t I do the interview with RS?

middlefing | 12/14/2008, 9:36 pm EST

The title of this article is misleading and is already drawing an inaccurate picture of what happened, going along with the “axl’s an asshole” narrative.

In reality, he’s telling his side of the whole GnR story on the internet now, allowing whoever to ask him whatever on all topics. Setting the record straight, from his point of view. It appears some legal issues have been cleared and he’s free to speak.

It’s actually a good idea if you think about it. Everyone’s heard the same rumors and shit talk, this way he can clean it up all at once.

Maybe this way he wont have to do hundreds of repetitive interviews with biased rags like this.

Anonymous | 12/15/2008, 4:19 am EST

He answered my question and was very articulate and polite, so fuck those of you who are acting like dickheads.

Some people here feel that Axl personally raped their childhood or something, which is just pathetic

Give me a break about this album being a flop. It debuted at No.3 and worldwide it has already sold over 1 million in only two weeks.

Axl’s a cool guy!

Schirm | 12/15/2008, 2:20 pm EST

The new record is alright. It’s not the Epic I took 15 years to make record at all. It sounds very raw and stripped of the sweeping GNR production of years past. I keep hearing that it’s an Axl Rose solo record and I agree. He should stick to the group thing. He’s not much of a solo artist. As for him coming out at Midnight. That’s ridiculous and rude. We saw him in San Francisco a couple years ago and he had the fans sitting out in the cold for hours and then when we finally got into the venue we sat in the heat of lights and bodies for another 3 hours. Once he was on stage he kept leaving and doing something shady backstage because he went back there every single song. The poor guy has some demons he needs to talke care of before he has any business taking it on the road. It was rude, pathetic and inconsiderate…and boring. We left 1/2 way through.

Axl is a joke. Def Karaoke Jam’s song about Axl is better than anything he has done in 15 years…

distant | 12/15/2008, 3:26 pm EST

The interviews posted online were awesome reads!! It’s nice to get Axl’s side of the story on certain topics when all we’ve gotten to this point is Slash’s story. Which by the way, has continuesly changed time and time again.

The following is a post that I agree with 100%

The truth usually lies somewhere in the middle

However, Slash has already exposed himself as being full of it in numerous instances, simply by completely changing his story on a number of things. Example: in his autobiography he claimed that him leaving had nothing to do with musical direction. But in 1995 he was talking about how Axl was all into Pearl Jam and wanted to do songs like that, and how he hated that music. He says that Axl rejected his songs because he wasn’t into them musically. So which is it?

All along Axl has maintained that he was perfectly willing to do an Appetite style album, and the reason that didn’t happen is because Slash refused to let him have any say or input in the songs. He has never wavered from that, while Slash’s story has changed repeatedly.

Then you have the whole 4AM incident. Where Slash first claims he never went to Axl’s house. Then admitted he went, but only to talk about legal matters. Then admitted he went because he wanted to clear the air and apologize to Axl. The guy is full of it. He changes his story like he changes clothes

Meanwhile Axl’s accounts, even though they haven’t been frequent, have always been consistent. Not to mention Slash was a full fledged alcoholic and drug addict in those days, so how clear can his recollection of most events actually be?

Richard M. Nixon | 12/15/2008, 5:23 pm EST

As much as the haters and homies want to dismiss this album, it’s a great contemporary record and nice evolution from the “AFD” era band.

It’s unfortunate that people let biases blind them from experiencing good art.

cd | 12/16/2008, 10:22 am EST

album rocks as long as your not expecting it to sound like Slash is still in the band. it also gets better after you listen to it a few times.

definitely beats both velvet revolver albums by a longshot.

i guess it’s editorial based focus to make fun in this magazine. can’t deny it’s easier thought. rs is probably angry he chose to talk with his fans than to a jornalist-semigod from here. the album is really good and will do more to people than reading fuckin reviews. sad for you, but true fact.

TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE…”Chinese Democracy” is no exception…Axl may have let too much time pass him by. All his legions of fans moved on…listening to other stuff now…haven’t even considered the new album.

Mike/Houston,TX. | 12/18/2008, 7:48 am EST

Hmmm. Somebody posted that the new album has sold 1 million copies WORLDWIDE in it first two weeks since being released. There are well over 6 BILLION people on this planet, and 20 million would be less than a drop in the bucket…NOT GOOD.

Axl's dreaming | 12/20/2008, 7:15 pm EST

The new record is a good pop record(Think Lincoln Park, 3 Doors Down, Third Eye Blind), but not genius! I’ll take Slash’s word over Axl’s any day. If you read over Axl’s entire transcript (bring an editor, this guy has no punctuation!)Axl constantly goes back on what he says, “Slash was manipulative…” but in the next sentence talks about how slash didn’t deserve the gnr name, because when it came to contract negotiations slash said “I don’t care.” Which one is it Axl? He was manipulative or he didn’t care? Next, Slash has consistantly been in touch with his fans, Axl, where have you been? hiding out until you needed to drum up some publicity for your failing album!! You have NO credibility, Axl!, Perhaps you should’ve just sang the songs the way you were “told to sing them” and “your band” would be a little more successful at this moment in time…Kinda funny to see you write that you cut and pasted alot of the audio clips to make the songs. I’ve said since I’ve heard the demos “it sounds like Axl told a bunch of guitarists to go into the sound room with a metronome and ‘crank me off a bunch of solos at 100 bpm and I’ll use what I want’.” As much as I like about half of the songs on the album NOT ONE solo goes with any of the music. Steven Tyler(Axl Rose),YOU NEED Joe Perry(Slash). 3 albums later, Slash doesn’t need you! Suck it up Axl, you proud loser, get on the phone and get your band back before you manage to do any more irrepairable damage!
Later,
Axl’s brilliance!

Esther | 12/26/2008, 11:25 pm EST

Nothing surprises me at this point…….. Once a jerk, always a jerk. Though it would help if he went back to his old Use Your Illusion hairstyle, went to the gym and got back with his original bandmates. Then finally, GNR could put talentless bimbos like Rihanna at the bottom of the charts. Because there once was a time where you actually had to have TALENT to make in the music industry.

Esther | 12/26/2008, 11:31 pm EST

By the way RollingStone, that IS the best picture they have of him. You probably forgot Axl’s nowhere near the good-looking fella he once was.

Hector_St_Michigan | 12/27/2008, 10:55 pm EST

I am commenting on the “Chinese Democracy” CD from my own musical point of view. I don’t give a fuck about anyone’s personality or hardon for Axle and what kind of a prick or maniac you might think He is. I place “Chinese Democracy” in a place in my own mind along with other favorites like, The Wall, Sgt.Pepper Lonely Heart Club Band, Won’t Get Fooled Again, and so many more including, Appetite For Destruction.

Hector_St_Michigan | 12/27/2008, 11:03 pm EST

I am saying that I feel “Chinese Democracy” by Gun and Roses is a musical masterpiece. I hope it is not their last.

Axl has done well to aswers directly to the fans,we finally know the truth!CHINESE DEMOCRACY IS A MASTERPIECE and the wait has been worth, and IT’S A SUCCESS TO SELL OVER 1.156.000 IN ONE MONTH WITHOUT ANY VIDEO AND PROMOTIONS.And Axl was an angelic beauty BOY before, and is so a true sexy and fascinating MAN now. He is a really rockstar. GN’R4ever

Chinese Democracy is one of the finest rock CDs I have purchased in many years. Flawless and tells an amazing story. Go, Run, don’t wait another day if you do not own this masterpiece!

sandbothe | 12/30/2008, 1:43 am EST

If he did this in a year or two, I might be a little complimentary towards the album. Thirteen years to produce this self directed turd is inexcusable. He’s not really interested in making a quality product, and I’m no longer interested in his music or anything he has to say. I think he should have gone to college and listened more than he talks. He’s just a guy that had a cool voice an got in a fun band back in the eighties. There’s no good reason to pay any attention to him now. He’s got nothing to say worth listening to.
I think he should have called it “words that run thru my head while I’m taking a shit”.

maria | 12/30/2008, 3:33 pm EST

WHEN A CD IS A MASTERPIECE, IT IS A MASTERPIECE INDIFFERENTLY FROM THE TIME THAT HAS BEEN NECESSARY FOR THE RELEASE.And Axl has been very clear when has written that he has been bombed by legal problems. At fans don’t care the time, why this cares so much at the others?? And a man that is able to write and play so wonderful and touching music is surely interesting to be listened.Difference is that he choose to talk to fans and he doesn’t care of whom, denying the evidence, wants to criticize him. Every day when I listen to this great album, I remain without breath and I want to listen to it again! I must say thanks to Guns n’Roses for this masterpiece. GN’R and AXL 4EVER

axl may break promises but its never his fault. its the dumb lawyers, lying losers and record companies!! He’s really trying and yet you ppl continue to listen to the old ass pussy who went on “american idol”!

“Slash’s story, which by the way, has continuesly changed time and time again.” quote by Distant. So true, dude. Slash’s a whinny little b*tch who lies & hides behind lawyers. Slash & the rest of the old GNR line up wanted to do alot of drugs instead of making music like Axl was trying to do. It’s unfortunate that people let biases blind them from experiencing good art.
