On the Charts: Britney Spears’ Comeback Complete As “Circus” Reigns

The Big News: The Britney Spears comeback is complete as Circus exceeded even the most optimistic sales predictions, selling 505,000 copies to trapeze past the competition and claim the #1. Taylor Swift and Fearless hung strong to claim #2 for a second consecutive week, followed in 3-4-5 order by Beyonce’s I Am… Sasha Fierce, last week champ Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak and Nickelback’s Dark Horse. For Brit, her Circus attracted almost twice as many first week buyers as last year’s Blackout and marks the first time she’s topped the album’s chart since 2003’s In The Zone.

Debuts: Outside of Circus, the first post-Black Friday week left us with a smaller slate of new releases, with only Akon’s Freedom at #7 joining Spears in the Top 10. Freedom sold 110,000 copies. Other notable debuts include Scarface’s Emeritus at 24, Neil Young’s Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968 at 40 and John Tesh’s seasonal Grand Piano Christmas at 127.

Last Week’s Heroes: Alas, Chinese Democracy’s reign in the top 10 lasted only one week, as Axl Rose’s long-awaited opus plummeted from three to 18 after only one week thanks to a massive 78% sales decrease. Ludacris’ Theatre of the Mind and the Killers’ Day & Age had similar falls, with the pair dropping from 5 to 15 and 6 to 16 respectively. With only Common’s Universal Mind Control to challenge her this week, we’ll find out if Spears’ Circus can stay the queen two weeks in a row.

How many stories on Britney Spears can you put on this blog? Come on. She has a new album out and is making her outspoken “comeback.” We get it!

So far ahead of its time; ironically, if Chinese Democracy came out 5 years ago it would rule the roost. “Sorry”, Axl. This is a great album. It will stick around for a while unlike the vanilla flavors of the month on top.

“Chinese Democracy” is an amazing album. It’s impossible for anyone to really determine whether it’s “worth the wait”, since we’ve never had to wait so long for something like this before. But I am certainly not disappointed by it, in fact it exceeded my expectations. As far as sales are concerned, I’d say what is hurting it is that the hardcore fans all bought it already, the pessimists like my wife who think Axl is a joke for taking so long are boycotting it in their own private way, and the casual fans got leaks of all the best songs 5 or 6 years ago. Next time, Axl, just record the damn thing and put it out!

I think the biggest problem with Chinese Democracy’s weak sales, is because Best Buy is the only physical store in the US carrying it.

Yeah, AC/DC’s Black Ice is also only carried by one chain, but there are a lot more Walmarts out there, than there are Best Buys.

Nothing says more about the mediocre state of music today than the fact Britney Spears sits at the top of the charts.

Addy | 12/10/2008, 2:52 pm EST

she is so sexy and i am a great fan of her as well i love her body thats really HOT

Addy | 12/10/2008, 2:54 pm EST

HEY I WANT TO Sleep with u for a night we will be in heaven bet me

I haven’t bought a new album in months. I’m certainly not going to get suckered in purchasing a lame over-hyped teen pop album by Britney Spears or a vain over-produced solo project disguised as a group album that is “Chinese Democracy”. Wake me up when major labels start to promote quality artists & bands worth paying attention to.

Master Baiter | 12/10/2008, 4:10 pm EST

Equate CD’s sales with a limited release of a movie that shows on 100 screens nationwide as opposed to a major release that shows on over 1000.

mike | 12/10/2008, 7:58 pm EST

Beyonce is 45,000 copies away from going platinum :) good stuff

IF Axl did some press that might help. How about playing a song or two on SNL? Doing a late night show. This is a very good album and it should be a stronger seller than it is. However, the album wasn’t released to be sold, it was released so Axl could show that he could do it. Much to Best Buy and Geffen’s chagrin.

brain | 12/10/2008, 9:27 pm EST

Chinese Democracy had little promotion beyond the whole “umpteen yrs in the making” thing. Best Buy is not Walmart as far as availability… and I think a BIG issue for that album is many of us that grew up when they were in there prime and were really big… the fans are older now. We have mortgages, kids, wife, job etc. Downloading/ purchasing an album for that age group isnt a priority and the younger crowd tends to pick certain songs and leave albums on the shelves. Basically the fan base eroded. GNR and bands like that are nostalgia to many at this point. Concert tickets will sell but new material is differetn. Dont get me wrong, I think the album is great, but just because it has “GUNS N’ ROSES” on the label, dosent mean its gonna sell like its 1991. They havent promoted anything new to garner interest. Hopefully they will.

bigchris | 12/11/2008, 7:54 am EST

Kanye didnt debut number 1 with his album? Thats shocking. By the way this is the only Kanye album I havent purchased and probably never will.

talys | 12/11/2008, 9:40 am EST

mims | 12/11/2008, 10:43 am EST

I love her.
Britney Spears IS the Idol of our times. So I can’t help but root for her. Go Britney!

Fozzie Bear | 12/11/2008, 11:11 am EST

Im on my 20th spin of Chinese Democracy and it gets better and better. Kids today dont have the patience for a multilayered album. Oh well. WOCKA WOCKA WOCKA!!!

EL TIGRE | 12/11/2008, 12:35 pm EST

CHINESE DEMOCRACY is the best album of the year , believe it or not (it’s “Estranged” that most of the posts talk about CD and GNR instead of Bubis spears)

iLly | 12/11/2008, 1:13 pm EST

Brad Pitt is sexy.

gnrbuckeye | 12/11/2008, 1:26 pm EST

This is a sad day for america and the music industry. God i hate you so much right now rolling stone.

Pittsie | 12/11/2008, 1:40 pm EST

Chinese Democracy doesn’t have a bad song on it, and there are fourteen of them! It is unbelievable, let me tell you. Too bad if you haven’t spent a few hours listening to it. I have probably heard then entire thing over 50 times now.

Naseer Z. Khan | 12/11/2008, 3:30 pm EST

with even a little promotion, chinese democracy can top the charts.

chetta | 12/11/2008, 5:12 pm EST

What do you wanna bet 99% of the people who were d-mb enough to buy Britney’s album are in foreclosure or out of work? Amazing what people will waste their last dollar on – cigarettes, alcohol, Britney Spears “music”….

Anonymous | 12/11/2008, 5:17 pm EST

i manage a record store. not one person gives a shit about guns and roses anymore. in case you have not noticedit is not 1988. they are no different than warrant or winger.

Anonymous | 12/12/2008, 12:44 am EST

for a bad role model… not bad….karma though is still not enough for britney… or has it?

Leonardo | 12/12/2008, 5:31 am EST

Britney can’t even sing….all her concerts are playback….remember the MTV fiasco..

On the other hand, i have to agree to everything said by brain onn this topic…

In 10 years, no one will remember Circus, but I bet Chinese Democracy will be selling….just like Appetite for Destruction still sells today

Koko B. Ware | 12/12/2008, 11:26 am EST

Its a tough task to try and reinvent rock and roll. Axl’s ego is big enough to try, and he almost pulled it off. Give him another album and he will. CD is great.

Grayson | 12/12/2008, 2:04 pm EST

Yay Britney! I LOVE Circus it’s Amazing. I Love Britney, I Have All Her Albums but This One is the Best Yet. It’s Nice and Smooth all the Way through (With the Unfortunate Exception of “Mmm Papi”, but Hey 1 Bad Track Outta 19 Wonderful Ones is NOT Bad). I Understand that a Lot of People Do not Like Britney but OBVIOUSLY There are More that Love Her. And None of Them are Poor or in Foreclosure, Chetta. So Maybe There isn’t a Bad Song on C.D. (I Personally Don’t Know) but I Highly Doubt it Will be Selling Well 10 years from Now. I’ve Looked and A.4.D. is No Where, and Not because They’ve all Been Bought. Circus Probably Won’t Be selling Fantastically 10 Years from now, because Unlike Axel Rose Britney will Still be Around Making Better and More Amazing Albums, Just Like Madonna Has Done. Sorry People but Queen Britney isn’t Going Anywhere, Deal With it!

gnrbuckeye | 12/12/2008, 2:38 pm EST

The fact of the matter is that Chinese Democracy has not sold extremely well because axl rose really doesnt give a shit if it does. He made this album for himself, all the nay-sayers, and the real gnr fans out there. Half of you criticizing him and the album probably havent even heard the whole thing. Criticizing something without seeing or hearing it is straight ignorance. If this album was promoted even the slightest bit it would still be in the top 5. In 20 years people will still remember Guns N Roses. All people will remember Britney for is her antics and inability to keep her legs closed.

gnrbuckeye | 12/12/2008, 4:37 pm EST

Grayson…You are seriousley delusional. Thats all i have to say. For gods sake i hope you are a girl.

Sophie | 1/23/2009, 5:07 am EST

Yes she has made a great comeback with this album and the 3 hit singles, but i think she will go don’t hill again. She always does, But don’t get me wrong shes a great musician, but a bad role model.
