Readers’ Rock List: Best Album Covers of 2008

12/8/08, 6:45 pm EST

Last week, to kick off our look back at 2008, we asked you to tell us your favorite album covers of the past 365 days. The masses have spoken, and thanks to some ballot stuffing on behalf of a Brandon Flowers’ fan site, the Killers’ Day & Age cover with its Photoshop Stained Glass Effect desert landscape was victorious, beating out Metallica’s shrapnel coffin, a pair of epic Lil Wayne images, Kanye’s deflated balloon and priceless masterpieces by Pieter Bruegel (Fleet Foxes) and Eugene Delacroix (Viva La Vida). To check out 2008’s Top 25 Albums Covers, check out our gallery here.

Photoshop Stained Glass Effect? Rolling Stone magazine continues to prove that it is a joke with statements like that.

The artist’s name is Paul Normansell and he did beautiful work with not only this cover, but also the individual portraits of the band that’s inside the booklet.

exactly get it right

melody | 12/9/2008, 5:15 am EST

We are The Killers’s fan not only Brandon’s fan.
Paul Normansell did a good job! :)

Helena | 12/9/2008, 6:18 am EST

I would think that the Day and Age cover won on merit, it is an outstanding piece of art. It is a bit mean for Rolling Stone to accuse the Brandon Flowers fansite of ballot stuffing. Would it have said that if another band’s cover had won?

A | 12/9/2008, 9:31 am EST

Stupid… once again RS puts music 2nd to glitz.

DUMB

I don’t know why Metallica’s new CD cover is on there. It looks too much like a sphincter in the shape of a coffin. I guess many voters like the looks of a sphincter.

Kaleho | 12/9/2008, 11:06 am EST

no Islands or Cut Copy?!!? *sigh*

jamie | 12/9/2008, 11:36 am EST

Hell yess The Killers

Whatever | 12/9/2008, 1:15 pm EST

Can this band get credit for anything without RS just dismissing them? I mean, it’s also a rude thing to say for the artist who actually did not photoshop the cover. You can look at the actual cover and see that, and the pics he did of each band members are really unique and detailed. It just makes RS look stilly and childish to make such remarks. If any of the other covers would have won, what would have been the response? What does Brandon Flowers have to do with this over all– aside from the fact that is just “one” of the members of The Killers?

Why have a voting contest for readers if you are just going to talk smack about those who voted?

Oh, and this is from a Killers’ fan who did NOT vote in this contest…but can easily see how the cover was chosen.

Paul Normansell | 12/9/2008, 1:42 pm EST

‘Whatever’, you tell ‘em sista.
Thank you all for voting, I am very proud of the Day & Age cover art.

BRB.
Going out for hot chocolate with Brandy and L Reed.

Opinions of artwork are subjective, but to dismiss the “Day and Age” artwork as the result of Photoshop is flat out incorrect. From the artist’s statement:

From experimenting with colour my paintings became more illusional. I tried to create the illusion of movement, stimulating the eye into seeing things which may or may not be there, almost like a magic-eye image. Each painting is individual, painted in gloss onto aluminium or board. Each dot of paint is painted freehand using a brush. I use gloss paint and aluminium because of there reflective qualities and find it helps to enhance the optical effect of my work.

***You may now resume hating The Killers, Rolling Stone, but please get your facts straight before you malign anyone’s work.

Lola | 12/9/2008, 3:52 pm EST

Hell yes!
The Killers are once again victorious!!

manouche | 12/9/2008, 4:31 pm EST

Regardless of any possible ballot stuffing, please give the Killers Day and Age Cover Art it’s honors. Brilliant work of art.

Leanie | 12/9/2008, 7:31 pm EST

You guys always find a way to make the Killers less than worthy.
Damn shame…

m | 12/9/2008, 8:27 pm EST

rolling stone, you guys made a false little note about the killers. they truly deserved such an honour and i dont believe all the recognition of how they won was just by brandon’s fan clubs. the killers fans are just dedicated to the best band.
we didn’t stuff the ballots but isn’t there a possibility they JUST had the best cover.
the killers won fairly and that shouldn’t be ridiculed.
im done. im just glad they won.
GO KILLERS :D

Emmylou | 12/9/2008, 10:14 pm EST

Rolling Stone you are a huge disappointment. I don’t understand why you are insulting The Killers and Paul Normansell that way. You asked for the reader’s opinion and there it is. Their works are complete masterpieces and if you can’t realize that, then you completely failed at your job. But no worries, because The Killers have been doing just great without Rolling Stone to add their childish, superficial and arrogant comments.

Ky | 12/9/2008, 11:47 pm EST

Why does Rolling Stone hate the Killers so much!?! They are always so harsh when talking about them for no reason. The cover is great, so are pictures of the guys inside. Awesome job, Paul!

Auricélio Brazilian | 12/10/2008, 10:11 am EST

Metallica´s one is just the best off all. Oh Fools. The Death Magnetic´s cover is totally Semiotics. Don´t you know what is it? Learn it.

Jughead | 12/10/2008, 12:51 pm EST

That Killers album cover looks like something you would find along the walls in Grand Central Station in NYC.. something children composed in their grammar school classrooms and submitted to the NY Port Authority for holiday display for the weary travelers rushing to and from work to view. It even looks like an artwork you will find in a public restroom displayed on the tiles to look at after you’ve done taking a large dump and need to wash your hands. That’s what it looks like.

agnieszka | 12/10/2008, 3:19 pm EST

Let us not get upset. An opinion of a magazine with ‘Current Cover:Britney Spears Returns’ means NOTHING to me. If the comment below indeed was posted by Paul Normansell, then I just want to say that I loved the cover. It made me buy the album, so congratulations and thank you.

Simply Red | 12/10/2008, 6:23 pm EST

RE: Day and Age

It’s just not a great cover. Compared to 2008 releases, sure, it’s good. Here are some great covers.

London Calling
Achtung Baby
Break like the Wind
RIO
Holy Diver
Pyromania
Back in Black
Born in the USA
Purple Rain

Fraser Kee Scott | 12/11/2008, 6:56 am EST

If you look at 90% of the comments people LOVE Paul Normansell’s works! The Killers are way cool as they commissioned a true painter to do this album. It’s brave of them. It shows the are REAL artists!

cameron | 12/31/2008, 1:12 am EST

Hey RS, I’mn getting really sick of you guys always bashing The Killers. What you guys do is really messed up and it needs to stop. You need to give the credit where credit is due. You don’t “accidently” win Best Album, Best Cover Art, and Best Video, as voted by the fans, Key word “fans” obviosly more people like The Killers!! Sorry your precious TV on the Radio didnt win, they are great. The Killers are just better.

Pagey | 12/31/2008, 10:13 am EST

They Won This? WOW, How does this beat Metallicas And KOL’s Covers… LAME.

Helena | 1/7/2009, 8:40 am EST

Yes, I think Rolling Stone are just being petty by criticizing The Killers all the time. They write great music and have risen up the ladder to being the best band in the world today. I think Rolling Stone’s remarks about the cover of Day and Age are pitiful.

Jeah | 5/14/2009, 5:27 pm EST

Why do we all care again?
