Metallica’s “All Nightmare Long” Video Premieres

12/8/08, 9:05 am EST

Metallica have unleashed their new video for the Death Magnetic epic “All Nightmare Long.” While the band doesn’t actually show up in the video, the nine-minute clip could be the best Metallica video since “One,” and possibly even the best video of the year. Combining the a Grindhouse-esque worn film look with equal parts Russian educational documentary, Watership Down style animation and Re-Animator, the video tells the story of a strange spore that falls to Earth that first heals wounds and revives dead pets but eventually leads to a zombie takeover in the former USSR. It’s like Planet Terror wrapped into ten minutes without the terrible ending and Quentin Tarantino cameo. Check out the video above.

A great video and a great song. Now I hope Metallica plays this song during their winter tour; it has yet to feature on the setlist of any show since the release of Death Magnetic.

Mleh | 12/8/2008, 12:08 pm EST

Now that is pretty fuckin cool

Zokor | 12/8/2008, 1:20 pm EST

Correct that, Metallica played Nightmare over the weekend! Hope to hear it in D.C. on the 15th of January!

Nikola | 12/8/2008, 3:16 pm EST

This video is amazing! I like it a lot! That style reminds me on 50`s cartoon style, great. We got something different from metallica and that is WOW! That song is killer one, and album is brutally good! I hope to see them next year in Serbia.

MetallicanFan4life | 12/8/2008, 4:44 pm EST

Garret it has been played live already, check out on youtube, they played it live in Alberta, Calgary, Canada for the first time on december the 5th, its awesome.

Sambora | 12/8/2008, 5:05 pm EST

Brilliant, they’ve re-invented themselves. Best song, best video. Keep rockin!!

Josh | 12/8/2008, 5:07 pm EST

Awesome video…Have what might be a stupid question though. At the very end when it says, “Recorded in Stamps, Arkansas” Are they talking about they filmed the live parts in Stamps or what? Just a bit curious.

Tim Meader | 12/8/2008, 5:31 pm EST

They played this in London on release day and it rocked….

johnnyb | 12/8/2008, 6:05 pm EST

wow, this is one of the best videos ive seen, is totally mindblowin

jakeb | 12/8/2008, 6:32 pm EST

Pearl Jam made this video 10 yrs ago with Do the Evolution.

anthony | 12/8/2008, 7:22 pm EST

i was at the show in london and they didnt play this

you can see its debut on youtube in d.c or somewhere

you dont have to make shit up to make yourself seem cool. if u like tallica then you’re pretty much ok

Chuck T | 12/8/2008, 8:31 pm EST

Metallica does it again! and they are now the second major artist to mention “chemtrails” in the last few months (Beck being the other). look up in the sky people, notice how you rarely see real clouds in big cities anymore, the sky is full of thin trails being painted high in the atmosphere. if it was water vapor like they say, the trails would be gone in minuets.

Ryan | 12/8/2008, 8:35 pm EST

What are you talking about? This isn’t like the “Do the Evolution” video.

Craig | 12/8/2008, 11:50 pm EST

Gonna be awesome if they play this song in Fresno! Anyone else going?

Pete H | 12/9/2008, 1:53 am EST

I’ve been saying for a while now that Metallica has only ever made “One” good video. I’m so glad they could put out something like this.

They were my favorite band as a kid, and now I think they’re reclaiming that title. They friggin rule.

Crombrenner | 12/9/2008, 4:44 am EST

Wow, honestly that is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen. Who directed that? It’s brilliant!!! Congrats Metallica, whoever came up with this idea (I know it wasn’t Lars) is a fucking genius. That’s one disturbing vision!!

Anonymous | 12/9/2008, 6:02 am EST

i dont like it :/

Jon Pon Kovi | 12/9/2008, 6:35 am EST

This is so not good. What is this nonsense?

Joe | 12/9/2008, 11:38 am EST

Erm, the video is good, but certainly not the best video of the year. That goes to Gnarls Barkley’s “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul?” with Radiohead’s “House of Cards” in second place.

As for the description of the video, Rolling Stone “journalists,” are you blind, lazy or both? The “zombie spores” are sent by plane to take over America, not the USSR. Note the Golden Gate Bridge and US map.

Phil G. | 12/9/2008, 2:02 pm EST

“jakeb | 12/8/2008, 6:32 pm EST

Pearl Jam made this video 10 yrs ago with Do the Evolution.”

Totally agree here. Both are animated. Both are set to music. How many connections do people need??? It’s the same thing with that drawbridge on the Rhine and a Mercedes. Both are made in Germany. Both are powered by gasoline. I mean, do I have to connect the dots for you people??? Also, the fax machine is just a waffle iron with a phone attached.

Video of the year. Easily.

Rob N3umann | 12/9/2008, 2:07 pm EST

That was amazing. A great compliment to one of the best songs on the album.

Rob N3umann | 12/9/2008, 2:09 pm EST

Now they should add it to their set list for North American tour along with “Judas Kiss” and stop playing “That Was Just Your Life” and “End of the Line” at the beginning of every show. “Unforgiven III” as well.

Dayle | 12/9/2008, 3:33 pm EST

they could have done better..dissapointing

Suman(SantoDomingo)PKR Nepal | 12/9/2008, 5:58 pm EST

Well..
you dont like it,fuck it.This is the best(even better than ONE)video ever made by Metallica. The best of the year.Metallica rules…

jake b | 12/9/2008, 6:03 pm EST

Ryan, if you can’t see the GLARING similarity between this and evolution I can’t help you.

Phil G. | 12/9/2008, 7:11 pm EST

Ryan,

Put two and two together, pal. One video is an allegory that stretches across human history, outlining the progress of human life and the dominance of Death as dealt to the world’s peoples and environment by their leaders, their religions, their hypocrisies and themselves, featuring WWI and Vietnam battle footage.

This video is about a meteor impact in the east of Russia and their scientists’ exploitation of a spore that reanimates dead tissues, the weaponization of said spore and its dispersal over the American continent to effectively “feed” Americans to their own dead, annihilating our imperial capitalist society and paving the way for a communist takeover.

And they both have animation.

I mean, the two are virtually identical!!!

MMMM | 12/9/2008, 11:52 pm EST

Metallica never had good videos but they have great songs

Jake b | 12/10/2008, 10:58 am EST

Phil,
I’m assuming you’re attempting sarcasm. Of course the two are not identical but to give Metallica points for originality given the similarities between this and the Pearl Jam is stupid. That being said I still think Death Magnetic is that record of the year.

Phil G. | 12/10/2008, 3:44 pm EST

“Of course the two are not identical but to give Metallica points for originality given the similarities between this and the Pearl Jam is stupid.”

And to assume the similarities are anything other than distantly related and superficial is either willfully disingenuous or similarly stupid. The two videos are wildly divergent thematically and essentially share only two traits: animation and scenes of war. (And even the styles of animation are vastly different, to say nothing of different wars and different motivating ideologies behind them.)

To argue that those two things — irrespective of every other thematic and critical element — are the SOLE determinants of what is and isn’t original is like saying “Four Weddings and a Funeral” ripped off “Howard’s End” because both of them feature love stories and are set in England.

By that extremely reductive rationale, all videos in black and white and about bitterness or nostalgia are effectively the same videos conceptually. The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Disarm” is unoriginal because Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer” preceded it.

Divesting another artist of any claim to originality because of such one-dimensional resemblances is intellectually lazy and unpersuasive and indicative of an at-best superficial engagement with the art itself.

brian | 12/10/2008, 5:33 pm EST

too bad pearl jam sucks and metallica does not.

Jimbo | 12/10/2008, 11:13 pm EST

A most awesome video, the graphics are totally retro cool.. whoever did the cg work knows his shtuff……..

Jimbo | 12/10/2008, 11:16 pm EST

totally out of control cg work Hats off to the artistry. very old school retro deal.

Joel | 12/11/2008, 12:11 am EST

Watch it without subtitles and crank it. They aren’t really needed are they? The story can be told with images and music, so they end up ruining the experience. Some lines are cool, but they could have just thrown those up every once in awhile when it served worked.

Kirk | 12/11/2008, 5:49 am EST

If Metallica stole this from Pearl Jam, then Pearl Jam stole it from The Wall…
It makes no sense and I think Phil G put it perfectly.
Both Pearl Jam’s and Metallica’s are great and different videos.
Cheers!

Musicwinter.com | 12/11/2008, 10:34 am EST

Great band, wish they still partied, but it is hard to live it that hard for so long. Intense video, and the best thing they ever did was get rid of whiny newsted. Ride The Lightening is still one of the greatest records ever recorded.

Jake b | 12/11/2008, 11:15 am EST

After having watched the two again I still see similarities in the animation, color tones, and general theme (humanity turing on itself). If that makes me “intellectually lazy” and “unpersuasive” so be it. If I were the one making this video (I realize I’m not but this a message board, right?)the Pearl Jam video would’ve come to mind and I would’ve gone a different direction. That’s it. And knowing that the actual subject matter of the Metallica song is from The Hounds of Tindalos story it makes the video a little distant from the song for me.

Pixalife | 12/11/2008, 2:11 pm EST

BEST METALLICA video ever! dudes this is proof that Hetfiel and ulrich are not totally assholes after all. I love their new album, and this video make them appear at the scene, DEFO.

Luguach | 12/11/2008, 5:26 pm EST

What does say at the very end?

Doug in B.A., Ok. | 12/11/2008, 10:03 pm EST

KICK-ASS VIDEO! And best rock and roll band ever! I just saw them play in Tulsa. They always rock!!!

J | 12/13/2008, 4:50 am EST

That. was. awesome. …

David | 12/14/2008, 4:32 am EST

ack, Zombies!

lol, that was OK. best rock video ever? hell no

headbanger | 12/17/2008, 12:39 pm EST

This video (ANL) is not similar to Do the Evolution of Pearl Jam because of the following reasons:

1. ANL is not only animated.
2. The scripts are different. Do the Evolution is about the story of mankind. ANL is about an especific period, “the cold war”.
3. ANL has zombies, Do the Evolution hasn’t.

Finally, Do the Evolution is similar to The Wall of Pink Floyd.

Svitch | 12/18/2008, 1:09 am EST

this video is totally sh*t. Song is the best but this sic fantasies about The Soviets … are boring … i’d better watch Resident Evil than this `cause there’s more realistic zombies ;)

Beaumain | 12/19/2008, 12:19 pm EST

A great video with a great sence of humor, a parody on 50’s propaganda cliches of both US and SU, as well as horror movies. Mention the pseudo-cyrillic script with lots of errors, which was typical for american films about “mad russians” – another aspect of parody.

orlinda | 12/19/2008, 3:02 pm EST

you rock metallica i love your song but the one think i like about your song is (one) that’s what i like about your song well add me on myspcae love yeah? later?
