Oasis and Ryan Adams Deliver Workmanlike Rock in Oakland

Manchester, England’s Oasis and New York’s Ryan Adams & the Cardinals both focused on workmanlike songcraft as they opened the United States stretch of their joint world tour last night in Oakland, California. Although both bands are known for the verbal swagger of their respective leaders, Oasis and the Cardinals both kept the emphasis firmly on their music: Adams barely spoke a word, while guitarist Noel Gallagher’s most pointed comment came when a nearby fan passed out during through a grinding “Slide Away.” “Did somebody get overwhelmed?” he quipped. “I’m sorry about that. Buy a T-shirt on the way out, please.”

The Britpop icons remained typically immobile bellow four massive video panels that mixed live projections with canned Pop Art imagery. Liam Gallagher clenched a tambourine in his teeth as the band opened with “Rock N Roll Star,” then held it behind his back in a defiant stance maintained throughout the night. Although his contemplative “I’m Outta Time” proved Oasis hasn’t run out of ways to effectively raid the Beatles’ songbook, it was mid-90s hits like “Wonderwall” that generated the most sing-along enthusiasm from an otherwise strangely sedate audience. Perhaps a newly mellow Adams had chilled the crowd: The former bad boy proved himself ready to inherit Tom Petty’s mantle with a set of countrified mid-tempo rock. While bassist Chris Feinstein roamed center stage, Adams humbly stood off to the side and plied ballad after ballad until his Cardinals finally let loose an anxious and succinct “Magick.” And then they flew away.

11 years after U2’s POP….

“The Britpop icons remained typically immobile bellow four massive video panels that mixed live projections with canned Pop Art imagery.”

Good job, guys.

The Graveyard | 12/4/2008, 1:50 pm EST

Uh, yeah, because U2 did it 11 years ago, nobody else can ever use Pop Art ever again…everything U2 has ever done has been appropriating other people’s ideas.

Haha | 12/4/2008, 2:24 pm EST

And same goes for Oasis.

Master Baiter | 12/4/2008, 2:56 pm EST

U2 is a bastion of groundbreaking originality and innovativeness compared to Oasis

Reality Diner's Club Card | 12/4/2008, 3:53 pm EST

ZOO TV & PopMart set the standard for a modern rock band combining spectacle, muscle and music. Oasis is just following in their vapor trail. Oasis is great, just not spectacular.

Jeff | 12/4/2008, 6:40 pm EST

I was there last night…great show!!

Mike | 12/4/2008, 8:37 pm EST

Seeing Oasis in Chicago in a week. One of the last great bands.

Alex | 12/4/2008, 9:36 pm EST

Umm, what does U2 have to do with any of this? When he says they ‘remained typically immobile’, he’s talking about the fact that Oasis are rarely very active onstage, preferring to let the music do the talking. They’re not trying to make some grand statement. “pop art” just means all the typical psychedelic-type stuff that lots of bands employ, flicking between the live feed and some artwork. The show is nothing like U2’s ‘Pop’ tour. (Which Oasis opened on, BTW.) Man, some people will dig up anything to bash Oasis, one of the last great rock n roll bands on earth. I’ll be at the show in Chicago next Friday night….can’t wait!!!

I was there last night and have seen them once before. I thought it was great and as far as Oasis being immobile, when were they ever mobile? It’s about their strange habits. Of course Liam will stand behind the microphone scowling and Noel will brood at his station. It’s all to be expected.

Matt Costa, who came on before Ryan Adams was a highlight.

Acvhaero | 12/4/2008, 10:31 pm EST

The was a great show. Loved seeing the oldies and some new ones too.

Joe | 12/5/2008, 11:52 am EST

OK. I dig Oasis big time. Oasis has always taken whatever opportunity they can (except Noel) to bash U2, while at the same time emulating them. U2 is a much different bird than U2. Oasis plays their songs. Bono acts them out. It’s two totally different birds. Think David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen.

Lickle Shabba | 12/5/2008, 12:03 pm EST

ah, another oasis review that doesn’t fail to hold a boring monotonous tone or to impress upon us their lackluster view of Oasis; having the reader believe that the only people in attendance were just as ripped-off and dated as the music being played.
Soldier on General Dredd

MOSS | 12/5/2008, 12:18 pm EST

Getting pumped to see Oasis next week. Hope they play The Turning and Falling Down.

Nathan | 12/5/2008, 12:39 pm EST

Looks like they’re leaving Acquiesce off the setlist for most of the shows, damn shame.

big mike | 12/5/2008, 12:48 pm EST

How about we stop with the cliches and criticisms and enjoy the music. Regardless of their performance styles, U2 and Oasis create great tunes. They are what they are. If you like them, great. If not, go watch someone else.

Joe | 12/5/2008, 1:13 pm EST

I think a U2-Oasis bill would be one of the best shows ever, with band members interchanging in each others’ set

Kunal | 12/5/2008, 1:25 pm EST

Awesome concert! Liam and Noel were in equal form….

JT Hutt | 12/5/2008, 2:36 pm EST

Caught them at Staples last night. Amazing. Once again Noel is right. Stop the Clocks and Dig are bringing their music to a new rock-starved audience hungering for something real and not Nickelbackian. Cheers boys! Great show!

Green Line L | 12/5/2008, 4:55 pm EST

I know I’m suppose to comment on Oasis here but I still have to wait another week until the Chicago show. I will comment on the U2 Pop Tour fiasco. Was it me or were the Fun Lovin Criminals better than U2 on that over the top mess at Soldier Field. I still enjoy U2 and have seen them a few times since but after that Pop tour I almost threw all my U2 stuff in the fire. Wow, that was a bad show.

K | 12/6/2008, 4:02 am EST

LEMOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!!

My friend got onstage w/ his airbrushed muscle shirt in Jacksonville!! Cheesiest concert EVER!!! ummmmmm Loved it!!!

OASIS btw!

Xformer | 12/6/2008, 4:42 pm EST

When U2 f’s up, they do it out of effort and going way over the top

When Oasis f’s up, they do it from lack of effort and not giving a shit

PopMart Mexico City remains the most incredible DVD concert I have seen in the last 10 years

PopMart San Diego live 6 months earlier was full of snafus as they were unprepared

I would rather have a band fall on their face while trying to break new ground

Trent | 12/7/2008, 9:31 am EST

I am very excited about seeing my old favorite artist Oasis with my new favorite artist Ryan Adams in 2 weeks. Us Oasis fans are always baffled by set list they always play because there are just too many great songs to choose from. Slide Away is my all time fave tune so glad it was slipped in the set list. However, how many times are we gonna have to hear DLBIA and CS? I’d rather here Roll It Over besides CS just to change things up. Why not bring back Noel’s acoustic set which everyone LOVED back in 1996 tour? My two fave Oasis albums are SOTSOG and BHN and there are no songs in this set list? Are you f*cking kidding me?

I hate it when I tell people I am seeing Ryan Adams soon. They always say, “Bryan is good.”

JRL | 12/7/2008, 5:44 pm EST

I saw Oasis in 2000 and they were great. Saw Ryan Adams and the Cardinals this year and they were more than great. As for U2’s Popmart tour (funny how many comments that is getting), I saw two show at Soldier Field and have to disagree with the poster who thought the Fun Lovin’ Crimminals stole the show. They sucked and U2 were very good. Not their best tour, but far from a disaster. It wasn’t Zoo TV and it wasn’t Joshua Tree, but they were out there taking risks and I prefer that to the safer (but still terrific) shows they’ve been peddaling in recent years.

father time | 12/8/2008, 1:13 pm EST

It IS funny how most of the comments here are about U2 what does that tell you about Oasis?

Brian | 12/8/2008, 1:32 pm EST

All I gotta say is I prefer The Turning over Ain’t got Nothin’ in the setlist. What we need is Gas Panic, Columbia, and Bring It On Down! Hail Oasis Dec. 13 isn’t far now. Also, go see Neil Young!

Harry Peratesties | 12/9/2008, 10:59 am EST

Screw U2. Safe rock, that’s their genre anymore. Let them go rock Oprah or something.

Long live Oasis.

Electrik Bill | 12/11/2008, 2:27 pm EST

I was there in Oakland and it was fucking great. U2 wasn’t there and no one cared.
