Hot Band Everyone Wants to Be In: MGMT

12/4/08, 3:01 pm EST

MGMT have gone from a Connecticut dorm room project to the coolest duo in indie rock. They’ve been remixed by the likes of Justice and play to sell-out houses everywhere, and it’s all because of the Ghostbusters theme, which was an early jam for them. “We were thinking of ideas that were inherently obnoxious,” says Ben Goldwasser. Click below for more on MGMT, and click above for the video for the band’s “Time to Pretend.”

Guns’n'roses?
To deny anything new and exciting to come about in the music world is pretty unartisitic. I have always thought that the reason of music was to stimulate thoughts and minds. Denying new sounds and experiences is pretty close to denying music itslef. In closing to put this band in the same category as blink 182 is absurd.

dude hell yeah they are so friggin sweet with their drive and synth with zeppelin feel.. ahh hell yeah i feel that for sure! i can not get enough of them!at first i was sceptical but about them but if you listen to how they put the music together and their lyrics are actually pretty clever. I don’t think most people are observant enough to be able to put MGMT in to a social context that reveals the wit and sarcasm of these two guys and their music. At a first glance they might seem sort of vapid and ordinary, but on closer inspection, I personally find them both to be highly intelligent and sardonic young men who appreciate the irony of the situation they have found themselves in.

Song writing and creativity, that’s what is happening with MGMT. Not to your taste? Don’t listen to them. But
if you do listen to their cd a second or third time, they may grow on you. Be careful!

OH WOW!!! Now that I’ve watched it again, I see the wonderful magic that is…. a bunch of kids aping harmonies and melodies from 90’s bands such as blink-182, Collective Soul, Live, Oasis, with a little pro forma Pink Floyd and Beatles thrown in. blink 182 started the whole 90’s stoner-surfer melody teen pop-rock genre and like I said before, it has run its course with bands who think they are expanding it and being “original”, but in reality they are piggybacking on what has come before. This video was specifically made for folks who are smoking reefer and dont care what they are looking at. It’s so Spinal Tap without the humor. This droning riff put me to sleep about two minutes in. Reminds me of other crap 90’s bands too like Primal Scream, Soup Dragons, and Cornershop. I guess you’re right. blink-182 was way more original than these jokers.

To say that MGMT is a run-off band out of a genre that Blink-182 started, is an absurdly dim-witted and nonsensical statement. MGMT is quite original, and they have fun whilst retaining a level of musical sensibility that is both interesting and very entertaining. They’re live performances have been mixed, yes, but there have been countless greats in the past who have been pretty weak live.

Four Nick Eight | 12/6/2008, 11:30 am EST

You might as well say Gym Class Heroes are original if you think MGMT are.

wow ok you guys are cool, just go and rag on a group thats doing something original. Axl and chinese democracy? come on if it takes 14 years to make ONE album, in a genre only tools listen to, then it better be the best album since Sgt. Peppers (and it’s most definitely not). MGMT is probably the most original band around, and they’re just having a bit of fun. The music is great, and I’ve seen them live; they’re brilliant. Four Nick Eight; you don’t know what you’re talking about, especially if you like bands like Guns and Roses.

Four Nick Eight | 12/5/2008, 5:24 pm EST

The video and song are crap.

Thank God for Axl and Chinese Democracy, real rock in a dead rock age. Blink 182 started this new genre and all of its Fall Out Boy variants, and now the spiral is crowding in on itself, ready to flash out of existence like a dark star. Let the rockers rock and the poseurs pose.

I saw MGMT live, opening up on Beck’s latest tour. They were lifeless. I actually liked this band … until I saw them perform together. Ugh.

The “Ghostbusters Theme?” You mean Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr?
