Grammy Nominations: The Odd and The Snubbed

While Rock Daily mostly agrees with this year’s class of nominations in the important categories, the Grammys also had their share of head scratching nominations this time around. For instance, over in the Best Hawaiian Music Album category, Wayne’s World actress Tia Carrere managed to get a nod for her third album ‘Ikena (we weren’t even aware this was a category, or that Tia Carrere is so dominant a name in the genre). Actress Gwyneth Paltrow is also up for an award in the Best Spoken Word Album For Children category, with Scarlett Johansson and her album of Tom Waits covers getting no love from the voters. Knocked Up director Judd Apatow and actor John C. Reilly are both also up for an award for the Walk Hard title song in the Best Song From A Motion Picture category, where the unlikely duo will face off against John Mayer’s “Say” and Peter Gabriel’s Wall-E contribution “Down to Earth.”

The Best Recording Packaging award features a David vs. Goliath matchup between Metallica’s Death Magnetic versus No Age’s Nouns. Perhaps the most heated competition is in the Producer of the Year category, with Danger Mouse, Nigel Godrich, Johnny K, Rick Rubin and Will.I.Am all battling each other. Ringo Starr also locked up a nomination for Best Surround Sound Album with Ringo 5.1. Among the biggest snubs is the lack of Santogold in the Best New Artist category, Brian Eno’s absence among the Producers of the Year (despite Coldplay’s seven nominations) and a lone nomination for M.I.A. (though the nomination for Record of the Year for “Paper Planes” ties Justice’s nod for their MGMT remix for weirdest mention). We’ll find out who wins, who goes home empty-handed and how the Grammys can possible alienate even more people when the 51st annual ceremony takes place in February.

The Grammys get worse each year! Just because lil wayne sales 2 million copies does not make his music good! I dont care about the rollingstone 4 star review, the album was garbage. Once he sales 16 million albums like Eminem then maybe he will get my respect, but then again, he is garbage so maybe not. Catpowers JukeBox and Kid Rocks Rock n Roll Jesus were far better albums than The Carter 3! Yet I am happy that RadioHeads InRainbows got album of the year nomination, just wish the grammys would stop giving nominations to rappers who arent that talented! Bah-HumBug in Deed!

Cloudman | 12/4/2008, 6:55 pm EST

Hey, look at it this way: at least Herbie Hancock isn’t gonna win the big one this year. (sorry Herbie)

kanaka_maoli | 12/4/2008, 8:27 pm EST

Granted, the Grammy for Best Hawaiian Music Album is relatively new, but your ignorance doesn’t make it a “head-scratcher.”

The reason why Tia Carrere got the nomination? Because she’s working with Daniel Ho and has a recognizable name to voters from the continental U.S. (hardly any artists from Hawaii have joined the Academy… they place more emphasis on the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards).

The Brothers Cazimero and Na Leo Pilimehana are among those who deserved to get a nomination this year, but didn’t, since the Grammys don’t understand albums without the words “slack key” in the title.

saad | 12/4/2008, 9:24 pm EST

the grammy’s should really be a little more consistent with nominating music for the 2008 grammy’s that came out in 2008. seriously, some of the stuff nominated came out last october. the oscars don’t mix things so why does the grammy’s.

saad | 12/4/2008, 9:26 pm EST

oh yeah, tha carter III was over rated. i mean i listen to rap, alot, and i think the roots should have gotten the nomination for “rising down” instead of ti’s lame ass album.

JD | 12/4/2008, 10:59 pm EST

I’m not a rap fan but I think that Weezy is a competent rapper and deserves recognition, but his stuff in my mind is very unmemorable. I doubt that in 20 years time anyone will be listening to any of the Carter albums let alone remember them.

george wisner | 12/5/2008, 9:37 am EST

rap has been getting sooo much cred for so long and for wwwwhat, politically correct reasons
and once phenom sales. maybe one day soon we will go back to honoring great songwriting and singing again.

george wisner | 12/5/2008, 9:41 am EST

why werent the b52s nomed for there great funlpex cd, it was a dancable fun riot, just what the world needs, and they have been doing it UNRECOGNIZED forever.

JP | 12/5/2008, 11:49 am EST

These nominations showed how weak mainstream music have been this year. Seriously, the best album nominated came from last year “Raising Sand”. If the Grammy voters don’t hit their head like they did when they gave an award to the Black Eyed Peas for “My Humps”, then Robert Plant and Alison Krauss should be able to sweep all the awards they are nominated for.

Sheepy is back | 12/5/2008, 12:56 pm EST

@ shakespeare

Rock N Roll Jesus–better than Tha Carter III? Please. I’m so tired of Kid Rock’s attempt to blend cool, southerner-attitude with hip hop. It’s just not working. Am I the only person who felt that Kid Rock and Lil Wayne’s performance was oddly off kilter? Really, I just had a sour taste in my mouth.
Cat Power’s record was good; Lil Wayne’s record was good. Am I willing to admit that Lil Wayne’s record doesn’t deserve the critical acclaim that it has received? Yes, possibly. It’s a good hip hop record.

Joe | 12/5/2008, 2:48 pm EST

The B-52’s CD Funplex was beyond ghastly. Sorry George. I love the B-52’s but it was pretty much unlistenable.

rschuck1309@comcast.net | 12/5/2008, 7:23 pm EST

music is so Lame these days. “Raising Sand” was such a wonderful surprise. I LOVE it. It is totally addictive. So glad the pendulum is swinging back to people with real talent. Congratulations to Robert a Alison! These two have set a high bar!

Caramel Molokai | 12/6/2008, 4:22 pm EST

Tia Carrere and Daniel Ho truly deserve this Grammy nomination for their album, ‘Ikena. I LOVE this cd! It would be awesome for the 4th Best Hawaiian Grammy award to go to a wonderful Hawaiian language cd showcasing smooth vocals and original music.

Caramel Molokai | 12/6/2008, 4:45 pm EST

CORRECTION: The 5th Grammy for Best Hawaiian Album is being awarded this year…not the 4th, although it would be the 4th Grammy for Daniel Ho if he wins.

Dude | 12/7/2008, 2:07 am EST

Lil Wayne’s album is the most overrated rap album I’ve ever listened to. He rides on the coat tails of all of his guests and his attempts at metaphors and analogies all seem boring or unappealing when compared to his competition such as Jay-Z and Kanye West. MGMT got snubbed with 0 nominations.

siddharth | 12/7/2008, 9:43 am EST

In Rainbows totally deserves all the nominations, hoping it wins in the album of the year category

rdiddy182 | 12/9/2008, 3:45 pm EST

shakespeare:

Call me when ANYONE sells 16 million albums in this day and age. this new trend called the ‘internet’ makes selling 2 million copies in 2008 equivalent to 10+ million in 2000. Kid Rock… please. Pick a genre and stick with it already! At least Weezy knows he’s a rapper, not a has been rock star who thinks he is either a rapper or a country star. What’s next for Kid Rock? Opera?

AL | 12/9/2008, 6:50 pm EST

Tia and Daniels nomination is well deserved. The collaboration is just beautiful. Well done!

a weezy | 12/10/2008, 9:12 am EST

any one who disses on lil wayne is slightly retarded. his dominance of rap and pop muic is undeniable, he is everywhere and even if you don’t ever respect or like him it doesn’t matter cuz most ppl you meet will. and to say no one will be listening to the carter in 20 years is absurd, listen to playing with fire, let the beat build, hustler’s music, 3peat, a milli, or misunderstood and tell him he rides of his guest’s coattails

Just A Dude | 1/24/2009, 5:57 am EST

Sheepy is Back: So Kid Rock’s ‘attempt to blend Southern Cool with hip hop just isn’t working’ huh? He had the fourth best selling record last year with 2 million copies sold. Admittedly, Weezy had the biggest record with 2.88 million sold. However, considering the fact that 20 years into his career he lands a record in the top 5 would indicate that, as a matter of fact, his attempt to blend Southern Cool with Hip Hop is actually working pretty effing well. I guarantee that in 10 years, Kid Rock will still be making music, while Lil Wayne will have ‘WeedBlowPills’ed himself into obscurity and be nothing but a footnote. I’m not a huge Kid Rock fan personally, but the man has had a damn successful career. Sheepy, that is the most ridiculous statement I’ve heard in quite a while.

vegas | 1/27/2009, 7:09 pm EST

Just a dude: the ONLY reason kid rock sold that many records is because of the radio hit “all summer long” which samples from not one but TWO songs that have been popular since long before kid rock’s time, not to mention that it contains lyrics that a high school kid could have written. Plus, one of the quickest ways to make money in the business is to make a song which idolizes the party-time feel of summertime and release it, that’s right, around summertime. The only time kid rock really gets that deep is on “only God knows why”, other than that, he just knows how to capitalize on the fact that most consumers love a music quick-fix.

Yoelian | 1/29/2009, 1:58 pm EST

I love how mgmt got snubbed and rolling stone didn’t even acknowledge it. There album was amazing and they got the biggest snub ever!! It’s kind of unreal

Snaves | 1/30/2009, 12:04 pm EST

I thought Lil Wayne’s album was good, but I don’t think it was the record of the year…I love A Milli and Dr. Carter but a lot of the lyrics on that album are kind of generic…I mean don’t get me wrong he’s probably the most creative popular rapper out there right now but I think he could have done better with a couple songs. The Roots have the best hip hop album of the year in my opinion, they’re like the Radiohead of the genre, not really going mainstream to much but still putting out amazing music. Kid Rock…you took two hit songs and made a hit song, wow, you’re pretty good, yeah right. I love MGMT’s album, can’t believe the Grammys ignored them, but then again who needs to recall the Jethro Tull Metallica fiasco…

Why Wayne Why? | 2/5/2009, 12:58 pm EST

Lil’ Wayne isn’t even on par with the greats he frequently mentions, if anything Scarface should have won a grammy some years ago for spawning all these rappers’ first peron narritives of smacking hos and selling crack. Radiohead should get Album of the year and M.I.A. should get record of the year. As for Hip-Hop the best album won’t be nominated, it’s embedded deep in the underground.

Respectfulboy111 | 2/6/2009, 7:17 pm EST

Springsteen got snubbed big time the Wrestler is great.
