U2 Premiere “Father Christmas” to Kick Off (RED)WIRE

12/3/08, 9:05 am EST

U2 promised they’d release new music in early 2009, but Christmas has literally come early for their fans. The band has revealed a new video for their cover of Greg Lake’s “I Believe in Father Christmas.” The song is the band’s first contribution to Bono’s (RED)WIRE, the new download service that will raise money to buy medicine for people living with HIV in Africa. The service also features exclusive tracks from the likes of R.E.M., Coldplay, Bob Dylan and Jenny Lewis. According to iLike, who debuted the “Father Christmas” video, the song was recorded in a London studio. In the meantime, U2 continue to comb through those 50 to 60 songs they recorded for their new album, due out in the first quarter of ‘09.

Greg Lake´s song is truly great, because its lyric reminds us on the fact that Christmas has turned into an disgusting sort of consume. So this song really makes you think over certain things.
U2 have done a great version and on U2.com I still enjoy Edge´s atmospheric guitar sound, Bono´s sincere vocals and the strong drumbeat. Merry Christmas!

As Lloyd Christmas would say, “I like it, I like it lot”.

It’s hard not to watch this without thinking about what No Line on the Horizon is going to be like; the subtle building drumline of Larry; the subliminal subwoofer bass of Adam; the passionate ringing chime notes of Edge’s guitar, and of course, the urgent yet restrained vocals of Bono….combine this with what we have heard about a new departure point for the band (Middle Eastern influences) and I’m sold. I believe in Father Christmas…and the power of U2.

Great cover song, though I’ve never heard the original. U2 sounds as good as ever.. and now I can not wait for 09 to come. Biggest band in the world? Yes.

abx | 12/4/2008, 3:31 am EST

the song is good….The Edge guitar sounds really great

Is it just me or do Bono’s vox sound half-assed/karaoke’ed on this song?

The rest of the band sounds great, but Bono is ehhhh… The original Emerson, Lake, & Palmer song had much more mellifluous vox and harmonies while Bono just sounds like all those cigs are finally catching up to him when he isn’t singing loud.

Zooropa | 12/3/2008, 7:11 pm EST

They are both great in distinctly different ways. No way to measure how much one is greater than the other.

Jungleland | 12/3/2008, 5:50 pm EST

Hey, Jungleland, like me, you must be a huge Springsteen fan. U2 is also great, just not as great. And, hey girl who apparently wants Bono to impregnate her, why Bono? Although he is not ugly, he aint that pretty either. He should grow his hair out again.

Jungleland | 12/3/2008, 5:08 pm EST

They do a very nice version of this song (one I had forgotten about)

I would have preferred a cover of the Kinks’ ‘Father Christmas’instead. Now THAT’s a good holiday song!

Dan_Nic | 12/3/2008, 12:35 pm EST

Very interesting. This was origianlly a very cynical song, but it looks like Bono kept the faith. Instead of “They sold me a fairy story, till I believed in the Isrealite” He sings, BUT I believe in the Isrealite. Good for him.Great job on this one. U2 is one band that has plenty of passion, still.

This song is very very good. A hint of whats to come.
