Congrats to Radiohead!

CldplyLvr | 12/3/2008, 11:57 pm EST

Viva la Coldplay.

Adam | 12/4/2008, 12:31 am EST

How is Coldplay nominated for best rock album? I thought R.E.M. should’ve been nominated for Best Alternative Album for Accelerate.

Anonymous | 12/4/2008, 12:58 am EST

I wouldnt be surprised if Radiohead doesnt win since its release was a kind of FU to the record industry but my opinion is that In Rainbows was the best album

Seb | 12/4/2008, 12:58 am EST

oh no, Radiohead AND Coldplay for album of the year? who am I gonna root for?

surfingelectrode | 12/4/2008, 12:59 am EST

“Best New Artist
Adele
Duffy
Jonas Brothers
Lady Antebellum
Jazmine Sullivan”

Are they really serious about this?

And what’s up with all but one of the year nominees for being song being by a solo singer?

There were loads of great albums that came out this year that all got shafted for godawful bland pop / pop-country / contemporary R&B singers. But then again, it’s the Grammies…

Garrett | 12/4/2008, 1:11 am EST

This proves the grammies are a joke, they put Coldplay up for Best Rock Album over AC/DC. Are they serious?

Starman | 12/4/2008, 1:12 am EST

Great albums that were snubbed-REM for Accelerate,Randy Newman for Harps and Angels,Neil Diamond for Home Before Dark,Portishead for Third. In terms of Neil Diamond-it is pretty obvious that the dude will not get any grammy props for his great collaborations with Rick Rubin until he dies.

Hanz | 12/4/2008, 1:26 am EST

finally some substance for the nominees! especially for album of the year. thanks for bringing the MUSIC back Grammys!

Mandela | 12/4/2008, 1:42 am EST

Coldplay are going to, rightly or not, pick up five grammys. Hopefully this will push their sales and encourage other artists to try and push themselves. By the way Coldplay, kill the two minute add ons and interludes on your next album, it really killed your album for me, I just mean what the hell is that last part on yes?

Anonymous | 12/4/2008, 1:44 am EST

what? No love for Britney? That makes me almost shed a tear….and where is kanye? i guess we won’t get a speech from him proclaiming his divinity as the savior of all music as we know it this year! guess, we’ll have to wait, til 2009!

trevor | 12/4/2008, 1:46 am EST

AC/DC? are you serious. those guys are worse than the Jonas Brothers, and the Jonas Brothers are pretty terrible. The grammy’s are a joke. Stephen Malkmus and MGMT. where’s the love for them?

kayla | 12/4/2008, 2:24 am EST

YEAH!!! GO DAFT PUNK!!!!!

omg | 12/4/2008, 2:40 am EST

Lil Wayne? Seriously?? Have you heard the tripe this guy puts his name too? Wow, how the music industry has fallen….

Geoff | 12/4/2008, 2:43 am EST

this so sad that grammies commitee wouldnt know music if it bit them in @$$…pathetic really coldplay over ac/dc for best rock album and rock song ac/dc would rock their faces off and make them wet the bed it’s so sad what this award has come too…and the got the foo fighters playin and nominations what a joke dave grohl has more rock in is little toe than coldplay could ever produce…really disappointing….GO THE MIGHTY METALLICA!!!! show them who the gods of rock are

Mike | 12/4/2008, 2:44 am EST

If the Grammys were a true talent contest, Radiohead would win everything for which they’re nominated. “In Rainbows” is a masterwork, head and shoulders above anything else this year. But they did give the record industry a big FU with their “pay what you want” idea, so I doubt they’ll win.

Coldplay, really? They’re awful.

REM deserved a nomination or several. Best album they’ve done in years.

Geoff | 12/4/2008, 2:45 am EST

*no nominations for the foo fighters

Anonymous | 12/4/2008, 2:50 am EST

Ummmm… Has anyone heard of MGMT? The Grammys are a joke. Nice to see Radiohead and MMJ get some love.

teee | 12/4/2008, 3:09 am EST

Wow. No Nine Inch Nails? Really?

Nash | 12/4/2008, 4:06 am EST

coldplay sucks, carter 3 will probably win because of the hype and since this was most definitely lil waynes year, but in rainbows hands down is the best album

Dogonroof | 12/4/2008, 4:09 am EST

oh man they pit MMJ against Radiohead??!why does the world have to be so cruel. On the other hand,at least Coldplay got some love. That shud cheer the boys up.

Drew | 12/4/2008, 4:53 am EST

Radiohead were never an award friendly band
And they probably wont even turn up at the Grammys, so I doubt they will be winning everything

But really, ‘In Rainbows’ is so superior to any other album this year

art | 12/4/2008, 5:07 am EST

I’m pissed that Alicia only got 2 nominations….and no Miranda Lambert of Solange…wow…they totally missed the mark on that one…

Mariel! | 12/4/2008, 5:10 am EST

FUCK YEAH! Janelle Monae and Robyn got nominations…its about time!!! I agree what the hell is up with 2 nominations for Alicia Keys…Ne-Yo album of the Year…wow…that is a b.s. nomination should of gone to Alicia Keys for I Am..

And for those saying Britney should of been nominated…seriously…she had a horrible year….maybe next year… she seems to be doing a lot better this year :)

I am excited for Ms. D List herself for her grammy nomination for her comedy album…it was great!

COMFORT INN | 12/4/2008, 6:46 am EST

NO BB KING?

booggit | 12/4/2008, 7:11 am EST

Very unfortunate that Neil Diamond’s “Home Before Dark” was not nominated…for multiple categories. Strong, personal songs, and his first ever album to hit the top of the charts. Very deserving album.

izzard | 12/4/2008, 7:21 am EST

Coldplay and Radiohead! and no nominations for sandwiches!! Everybody loves sandwiches!!

iLly | 12/4/2008, 7:35 am EST

Next year it will be all Kanye.

1800oops | 12/4/2008, 7:52 am EST

About the AC/DC, that album came out past the eligibility date, didn’t it come out in late October/early November? Even though there are some obvious obmissions, I’m actually fine with all the nominations. I mean, who expected M.I.A’s only nomination to be Record of the Year?

Frank | 12/4/2008, 8:22 am EST

I was surpsised that no nominations came the way of Foo Fighters, Neil Diamond or even Glen Campbell

Frank | 12/4/2008, 8:22 am EST

I was surpsised that no nominations came the way of Foo Fighters, Neil Diamond or even Glen Campbell

gagamen | 12/4/2008, 8:23 am EST

Daver | 12/4/2008, 8:33 am EST

Nice to see death cab for cutie get some grammy love, Narrow Stairs is a heavy album.

Dean | 12/4/2008, 8:37 am EST

Well, the list of nominees looks like they’re trying this year, but the Grammys are usually a pitiful gauge of the actual music scene. Certain extremely popular acts can put almost anything out and get it nominated, whether good or not.

JReynolds | 12/4/2008, 9:01 am EST

props to ac/dc for sticking to their original sound, too bad it was never that good to begin with. They should not be nominated for any awards. I agree that coldplay probably shouldnt be up for any rock categories, however, is there a better pop band out right now?

Kim | 12/4/2008, 9:18 am EST

It seems like there are only a handful of great artists. There aare so many others that should be considered… but Radiohead beats them all.

Kim | 12/4/2008, 9:18 am EST

Sam Totman | 12/4/2008, 9:19 am EST

DRAGONFORCE!!!!!

Counting Crows & REM both put out great albums this year…and somehow Coldplay’s mediocre (and their worst) album is peppered all over the nominations

Badman | 12/4/2008, 9:33 am EST

Where is Guns and Roses??

albert | 12/4/2008, 9:44 am EST

none of what you guys say matter because the grammy’s are a joke to begin with

Alloysius | 12/4/2008, 9:46 am EST

Album of the year-Viva La Vida
record of the year-Viva La Vida
new artist-Duffy
rock album-death magnetic
best rock song-violet hill
best pop album-spirit
female pop vocal-mercy
male pop vocal-closer
the nominations arent dat bad,4 me coldplay r gonna take at least 3.the best female pop vocal’s a tough 1 though.hope AC\DC win something.

boredasf**k | 12/4/2008, 9:46 am EST

I take no account to anything that happens at the grammy’s they suck. They don’t like music that has a meaning. Like in the 1984/85 how did Lionel Richie win Album of the Year over Born In THe U.S.A an album that sold 15 million copies. Or how did Nora Jones beat out the Rising in 2002. The Grammy’s suck.

timras | 12/4/2008, 9:46 am EST

Radiohead is in a category all their own. they should win hands down, no question. my guess is Robert Plant and Allison Krause will win.

Jungleland2 | 12/4/2008, 9:52 am EST

Elvis Costello, Drive By Truckers, Mudcrutch, Black Crowes, Steve Windwood, John Melencamp, REM all had amazing records this year!

I guess The Pretenders, Oasis, Killers, Lucinda Williams missed the deadlines. (could be up for 2010 awards?)

The Coldplay CD is ok, The Radiohead one I played twice and never gave it a real chance (will do today)

Springsteen and McCarntey…love ‘em but these are not their best songs

Jack White & Alicia Keys should be up for best SONG, BEST duo, rather than just a video

vinnie | 12/4/2008, 10:24 am EST

ROBERT PLANT ALISON KRAUSS CLEARLY BEST ALBUM !!!

NickG | 12/4/2008, 10:29 am EST

If you dont think Best New Artist is going to The Jonas Brothers youre kidding yourself.

Anonymous | 12/4/2008, 10:31 am EST

NEIL DIAMOND IS NOT NOMINATED FOR ANYTHING! HIS LAST ALBUM WAS HIS BEST!

egos | 12/4/2008, 10:33 am EST

where´s REM accelerate?
where´s NIN the slip?

thezero | 12/4/2008, 10:52 am EST

finally the mars volta get a nomination, albeit in a strange category…

BK | 12/4/2008, 11:07 am EST

We need to remember that these award shows are all based off of sales. That’s why the Jonas Brothers are nominated. I’m a little surprised that High School Musical 3 was not nominated for record of the year.

Can anybody explain the difference between “Record of the Year” and “Album of the Year” Do they have a “CD of the Year” or “Download of the Year” category? This seems like a good way to reward second place.

I think the Grammys are going the way of the Miss USA Pageant. People are starting to care less and less about this award show.

HotFootMcCook | 12/4/2008, 11:08 am EST

I love Radiohead, but hell, House of Cards isn’t the only song on In Rainbows.

And where the hell is NIN with The Slip/Ghosts I-IV?

And the fact that The Jonas Brothers are even on that list is a joke, same with Lil’ Wayne. I’ve seen Wayne perform live at Voodoo Fest, and it was truly pathetic.

Donnie McGee | 12/4/2008, 11:24 am EST

Coldplay sucks. Radiohead is wayyyy better. You think Coldplay is more deserving to win an award in any catagory over radiohead???? Yeah right! Coldplay are nothing but a bunch of washed up chumps! Is this Coldplays fourth album? Really? Well I Radioheads fourth album was Kid A. Remember that one? Coldplay are nothing but washed up second rate brit rock wannabe’s.

Oh Beer | 12/4/2008, 11:34 am EST

I’m so Glad to see Radiohead on there, even if they don’t go to the show, or win anything at least the Grammie’s are finally recognizing some real talent…no Kanye or Brit…Finally!! Did I miss is it or is there also No Beyonce…WOW! Maybe this years show will be worth watching!

HotFootMcCook | 12/4/2008, 11:41 am EST

Oh my, I just realized that Kanye West isn’t on there!

Anonymous | 12/4/2008, 11:48 am EST

The Grammys have become all about record sales and pop music. That’s good for Coldplay (who made a sell-out pop record). Not so good for Radiohead however, who deserves Album Of The Year hands down.

If Ne-yo wins i’m giving up all faith in music awards.

Eric | 12/4/2008, 11:54 am EST

Coldplay admits they are Radiohead ripoffs. There’s no reason they should win an award that they are in competition with vs. Radiohead, that would be rewarding cheating. Naturally the Grammy’s are probably too dumb to realize this…

matt | 12/4/2008, 12:25 pm EST

In Rainbows deserves to win Album of the Year. I wish TV on the Radio were nominated…

HotFootMcCook | 12/4/2008, 12:47 pm EST

It is a shame that TV on the Radio isn’t nominated for Dear Science,

Yeah, its a shame that the Grammy’s publicize bigger acts than TV On the Radio, Deerhoof, Of Montreal…, etc.

J Kingman | 12/4/2008, 12:49 pm EST

Sorry R.E.M. didn’t make the cut. Accelerate was a good album, as good as any of the others selected.

seamus Donnelly | 12/4/2008, 12:56 pm EST

Best new artist: MGMT

c’mon gramys

Greg | 12/4/2008, 12:57 pm EST

I’ve always considered the Grammy’s to be a bit silly, and each passing year only confirms that sentiment. I don’t see any nominations for Portishead,Elbow, Sun Kil Moon, or Sigur Ros, all of whom put out CD’s vastly superior to many of those nominated. It’s nice to see In Rainbows and Raising Sand up for awards, as both were were good, but some of the other stuff makes me wonder.

Adam | 12/4/2008, 1:00 pm EST

I agree with a lot people who posted earlier. Where is REM? Accelerate is a great album and should have picked up a few nominations, at least.

That said, I will be rooting for Radiohead come Grammy night. In Rainbows, despite the marketing scheme getting all the attention, is a great album. I just hope the voters take the chance and give them the Grammy that they should have won for OK Computer.

Jimbro | 12/4/2008, 1:03 pm EST

Coldplay (like the awfully mediocre Foo Fighters) are the grammy house band.Look at the Foo Fighters-Dave Grohl does anything they ask. From Carly Simon karaoke to cracking lame jokes while presenting to
being the butler. So every year it is either Coldplay or the Foo Fighters.

While artists who released important albums in 2008-REM,The Counting Crows,NIN,Portishead,Neil Diamond,Randy Newman,TV on the Radio, etc got ignored for not playing the grammy schmoozing game.

lola1 | 12/4/2008, 1:35 pm EST

Where in the world is Estelle for Best New Artist?!!!! I see that they nominated Adele and that god-awful “Chasing Pavements” song…but where is Estelle? As far as British imports go, she had the best album of them all and her voice is amazing! The Academy should be ashamed!

meh | 12/4/2008, 1:49 pm EST

The Grammy’s are a joke. The one thing you can count on them for is to get it wrong. If history tells us anything it’s that they’re going to screw up. They completely miss any relevance.

It’s clear to me that M.I.A’s paper planes should probably win record of the year, but I highly doubt that will happen. After the release of Pineapple Express you couldn’t go a day without hearing it. Hova even knew it was hot and jumped on it for “Swagger like us”, but like I said, the Grammy’s are completely clueless when it comes to these sorts of things. I could understand if viva la vida won, just because it was widely popular and was recognized by many people who actually liked it.

And as far as Album of the year goes, it should only be between Radiohead, Coldplay, and Lil’ Wayne. I personally feel Radiohead’s album was superior to the other two, but it’s not really my say. Also, I think I heard the other day that Coldplay is the most popular band in the world at this time. (As far as record and concert sales go.) So if they win I’d be okay with that. Also another note, no one can deny how popular Lil’ Wayne was this year. This was His year. He owned radio and Tha Carter III was huge.

Buy like I said earlier, none of this matters at all for the Grammy’s. They’ll pick the most boring and easy listening artist/music. And they’ll always be behind the cure when it comes to music. Let’s hope they get it right, sometime.

meh | 12/4/2008, 1:51 pm EST

*curve

jooj | 12/4/2008, 1:53 pm EST

finally radiohead might win best album. cant wait to see lil wayne e.t looking ass excepting a award he’s bound to win one

lil wayne blows | 12/4/2008, 2:09 pm EST

if you have tat’s on your face you should not be allowed to nominated for the sheer fact of how big of moron it makes you look

Yeah | 12/4/2008, 2:19 pm EST

It seems that in these comments, about half the ppl like Coldplay and the other half don’t like them. Seriously, ppl have to stop hating Coldplay. Viva La Vida maybe shouldn’t be up for best rock album, but it is a REALLY good album. It’s like Radiohead. You have to listen to Viva la Vida for a while to start enjoying it.

Jones | 12/4/2008, 2:30 pm EST

Best new artist
Jonas Brothers YES
Vampire Weekend NO?

WHY?

DJ CSX | 12/4/2008, 2:36 pm EST

really surprised(well not really, it’s the grammys) that albums that were both appreciated by the critics and fans alike such as Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, and most of all, TV on the Radio(unbelievable album) are nowhere to be found.

Oh well, at least Kings and MMJ finally get some love. Hope Radiohead sweeps!

harpo | 12/4/2008, 2:36 pm EST

Based on the year we had I am suggesting a new category be added this year…”Best Kool-Aid Acts”…and the winners are….Springsteen….undoubte dly this years “King of Kool-Aid” and Barbra “Hooknose” Streisand in the female category!!!

replying to Yeah | 12/4/2008, 2:37 pm EST

I wouldn’t compare the difficulty of a coldplay album to radiohead. Ever. Coldplay has admitted on several occasions that when they started they just wanted to sound like radiohead. They owe very much of their success to them. Considering without them they wouldn’t have a sound. Plus the coldplay album isn’t even a hard listen. People love it or they don’t.

FLUTE GUY | 12/4/2008, 2:44 pm EST

Haven’t paid attention since the great Jethro Tull debacle

Chris | 12/4/2008, 2:56 pm EST

Yey Death Cab.

PoohBaah | 12/4/2008, 3:06 pm EST

Well I hope that the Kings of Leon are finally happy. Seems they have the American audience they wanted, too bad this is their worst album.

I hope that My Morning Jacket pull off a big win in a loaded category.

Mike | 12/4/2008, 3:15 pm EST

Yeah I don’t know if Radiohead is going to win, they were kind of screwed over in 2000 for Kid A, and in 1997 when they competed against Dylan’s Time Out of Mind. Dylan’s album was good but no OK computer. Although hopefully the grammy people have enough brains to give Radiohead the grammy for album of the year. It was probably the most revolutionary album probably this decade.

But then again these Grammy voting fools like to play it safe, and I don’t mind them giving it to Plant and Krauss but clearly Radiohead deserves it.

Although at the end of the day, when the grammy people give an award to Plant or Kraus, it just verifies how much of a popularity contest the grammys are. Either the awards go to Musical Legends (i.e Herbie Hancock, usually always Steve Wonder) or successful rock bands (U2).

Weezy Jefferson | 12/4/2008, 3:21 pm EST

Where is NAS?His album is a million times better then Lil Wayne’s cookie cutter cookie monster raps.

deraser | 12/4/2008, 4:07 pm EST

so if you release your album for free you only get half-assed nominations (nine inch nails). it’s still pay-for-play in the music biz. ps-go radiohead.

DAVID | 12/4/2008, 4:21 pm EST

where is MGMT? What about Justice? Santogold? VAMPIRE WEEKEND! It is the grammies but cmon

dannn2 | 12/4/2008, 4:42 pm EST

I think nods are ok guys, however I really hated not seeing Detours by sheryl crow and Flavors of entanglement by alanis m. out of the list, those records are really awesome and moving, the jonas brothers suck!!! don’t really know how they managed to get a nomination this year, seriously, and why does duffy got only 3 nods? i heard rockferry and 19 (by adele) and i have to say that rockferry is pretty superior to 19 (that doesn’t mean that 19 is a bad record), and for those who cheer up britney or kanye,, guys wait until next year, kanye is goin’ to kill 2010 grammys, and britnye should do well with circus, truth be told blackout was totally awful

coldplay sucks | 12/4/2008, 4:55 pm EST

I don’t understand why Coldplay is nominated at all, the new album is a pile of crap. I hate it that established bands make an album and it is immediately nominated. Best Album???? NO WAY!!!

Shawn | 12/4/2008, 5:22 pm EST

The reason they nominate coldplay is because they are quite established and popular. Plus their record was the second highest selling album of 2008 and their song Viva La Vida topped the billboard top 100, a very hard act for any modern rock band to do. The grammy people make you think the awards are about music but for the most part they are about familiarity and ratings. Think about it from a rating purpose? Radiohead is great band but I doubt they’ll generate as many viewers as Coldplay. That’s why you’ll see Coldplay nominated.

yaaaa | 12/4/2008, 5:23 pm EST

radiohead in rainbows dominates viva la vida. it better win

Ari | 12/4/2008, 5:52 pm EST

Coldplay “Album of the Year”?? Shoot me already!! That cd sucked big time. And Li’l wayne over Radiohead??? Man.

CarrieRocks | 12/4/2008, 7:01 pm EST

Carrie Underwood should have been nominated for Country Album. She was robbed. She did get a nomination for Country Vocal Performance, but she deserved better then that. She put out a GREAT album and had 4 number 1 hits this year.

Someone needs to send Taylor Swift to a vocal coach. the girl CANNOT SING, period. Yet rolling stone glorifies the girl. I will never understand that. She butchered that song last night. Horrible.

Chelsea | 12/4/2008, 7:21 pm EST

im so happy that the Jonas Brothers got their nomination. they are really talented boys, and perfect gentlemen. im sooo happy for them!

adam | 12/4/2008, 7:22 pm EST

anyone who looks to the grammys for music and not a big dumb ass commercial for record companys is retarted. musicians don’t value the grammys at all, buisness people do

Kaitlin | 12/4/2008, 7:28 pm EST

i agree, the Jonas Brothers are amazing and totally deserve this grammy, they are so talented and great role models.i havent even heard of the other new artist nominees, (except for duffy and adele anyway, they are ok.)

yo yo yooo, get real here, I AM the Musical Authority, I am a respeceted Author, Musician,Playwright, Artist & MC, so I’m telling you straight up . . .CODPLAY are a bunch of Communist Bastards,-they SUCK, and the SAME goes for that little phony Gangsta -Lil Wayne, that creep has no talent, and aint foolin me for a minute, can you y’all dig what Brutha j is spillin here!????
I will give props to Brutha JZ, but that’s about it, this Grammy thing is a circus, and a big hype, so that you can all run out and buy their “crap” after the show.
Get wise son, go out & buy MY new CD, titled “Groovin On Life”, look for Promotional Posters all over the Hood real soon. MP3 downloads will be just .88 per song, and my website will be up soon, I’m also workin on an MTV Special, so lots of things hoppin & poppin. My CD is scheduled for a Dec 19th release so be on the lookout
Peace Out Y’All, Brutha J

BaseballPrjct | 12/4/2008, 7:43 pm EST

I was quite sure this would be the year REM would get their ‘lifetime achievement’ award. ‘Accelerate’ is by no means their finest moment, but it is a damned fine album and easily worthy of multiple nominations across several categories. That leaves ‘In Rainbows’ in a class of its own….of course I thoroughly expect Plant/Krauss to walk away with the grammy since that’s right up Grammy’s alley. Was a pretty good year of releases, too bad nothing worthwhile gets recognized by the recording industry.

saad | 12/4/2008, 9:17 pm EST

usually the grammy’s are totally off and this time they are slightly off. so it’s an improvement that should be noted. but if the jonas bros win best new artists, everything is going to shit.

Joseph | 12/4/2008, 10:14 pm EST

If the Grammy Awards want to regain any kind of credibility Radiohead will win album of the year.. I’m not holding my breath though…

bodysnatcher | 12/4/2008, 10:18 pm EST

radiohead really deserves to win, In Rainbows is the best album I’ve heard in years, and one of their best

JD | 12/4/2008, 10:44 pm EST

For those who are wondering, Record of the Year goes to a single recording, credited to the artist, as opposed to Album of the Year. And the song of the year award goes to the songwriter.

Why is it such a big deal that Weezy has eight grammy nominations? All but one is in the rap categories. I guess it’s easy if you appear on everyone else’s recordings.

I predict that Coldplay will win six grammies, and the one they won’t win will be for Album of the Year. I think that’s going to go to Krauss and Plant.

cobes2409 | 12/4/2008, 10:58 pm EST

i hope radiohead takes album of the year… i was a bit disappointed not to see Gnarls Barkley nominated for more awards…

JokerOC | 12/5/2008, 1:15 am EST

Guns N Roses performance at the Grammy’s was the best ever after Appetite For Destruction came out. Drunk and falling off stage, banned for life from appearing after that; it is the best thing a real band can do to “honor” the grammies.

Nate | 12/5/2008, 2:54 am EST

I seriously think it’s the media that really screws the Grammys up. If you read most of the articles from various newspapers at news.google.com, you’ll see the pain emphasis on Lil Wayne or Coldplay. Then there is always like one or two lines about Radiohead. In fact on Rolling Stone’s front page, the headline to the corner was about Lil Wayne and Coldplay. I agree Radiohead deserves to win, they’ve lost three times before, and I love Planty but I think it’s time for a change. No political pun intended.

EDZ | 12/5/2008, 9:57 am EST

One look at some of the artists on the list and one doesn’t have to wonder why the music industry is in shambles. At least if that is what repersents the best.

btw: GnR did the drunk cussing acceptance speech at the American Music Awards, not the Grammys. At one time the AMA’s were about who was popular and the Grammy’s were about who was good. Now who can really tell the difference, they’re both about who sold the most units not who pushed the artist envelop.

First off the GnR drunk acceptance speech was at the American Music Awards, not the grammys.

But I can’t blame you for getting confused. Once upon a time the AMA’s were about who was popular and the Grammy’s were about who was pushing the musical envelop. Now who can tell the difference between the two?

I for one have never taken stock in the Grammy’s, even before Jethro Tull over Metallica in the best Metal Performance. But looking at some of the nominees this year, one doesn’t have to wonder why the music industry is in such a sad shape.

basser | 12/5/2008, 1:30 pm EST

How are Coldplay “ripoffs” of Radiohead? The two bands sound nothing alike. That is like saying Jethro Tull ripped off Roy Orbison. So both bands have atmospheric guitar textures? U2 did that and before U2, David Gilmour in Pink Floyd did it. Martin doesn’t sound like Yorke. Maybe Martin meant that Coldplay aspires to be LIKE Radiohead, not ripping them off.

Anonymous | 12/5/2008, 6:41 pm EST

coldplay should win album of the year coldplay have done great with viva la vida and death and all his friends. If they dont radiohead should. If lil wayne wins it, we know how bad society has come towards music. Bob Dylan’s like a rolling stone changed lyrics. Lil Wayne might rhyme well but about pure nonsense and is therefore going to pre-like a rollingstone times.

Coldplay should win though, best band of decade.

Peace Brother Jerome watkins 4 | 12/5/2008, 6:45 pm EST

Hey Y’all, Brutha J here IS the Music Authority, and I don’t want to see those Communist Bastards -Coldplay win anything, because they suck!, same goes for The Jonas Bros.-let’s give The Man of the Year Award to Bob Dylan

Gabriel | 12/5/2008, 6:48 pm EST

Coldplay is a great band over ac/dc. Even in the rock category. They push boundaries and don’t need to break guitars to get attention. They have popped bubbles in all these images we have of rock. The beatles use to have a nice theme and were smart and are rock. Just cause ac/dc have asshole characters doesnt make them good. Coldplay is the best band of our decade. We just don’t want to realize it.

T-Cap | 12/5/2008, 8:37 pm EST

Radiohead will win the Alternative Music Album award. I highly doubt they’ll win the Album of the Year award, as they probably won’t even be there to accept it. The Alt. Album award is not part of the televised ceremony.

I was surprised that they nominated House of Cards, of all songs, for Best Rock Song. It’s a great song, but Bodysnatchers performed the best of the In Rainbows songs on the radio, and it rocks pretty hard. If not that, then Weird Fishes/Arpeggi should have been nominated for its epic awesomeness.

the dude | 12/5/2008, 10:00 pm EST

if everyone had half of their mind, they’d vote for Radiohead and Kings of Leon on any of the categories…and Radiohead doesn’t need to be there to accept it…because the grammys suck. so does mtv….

Will | 12/6/2008, 12:02 am EST

This is just further sign that the grammys have always been ridiculous. Suddenly the Grammys just stops thier tradition of nominating Nine Inch Nails just because they decided to break from Interscope? The Slip is better than With Teeth (the last NIN album to get a nomination) yet somehow they got 0 nominations. Also, Metallica’s Death Magnetic easily deserved the Album of the Year nomination more than lil’ Wayne of Ne-yo. It also seems like a ridiculously high ammount of nominations for Coldplay. Sure their new album was good, but it wasn’t THAT good. I hope that Radiohead or Robert Plant and Allison Krauss win it rather than the others. It does, however, show something about the Grammys that Robert Plant might get a Grammy now, but but never got one for a Led Zeppelin. That’s what the Grammys have almost always done with the classic rock bands that teenagers still listen to today, they neglected to give them recognition at the time, than 30 years later they get a “life time achievement” award. Just take a look back at the winners of previous years and compare them with which artits are thought of as the best of there time today. The most ridiculous one was when Cristopher Cross’s self-titled album beat Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Now you may be asking: Who the f@#k is Christopher Cross? Great question.

James | 12/6/2008, 12:08 am EST

Leona Lewis is the greatest singer of our time. Listen to run, it is amazing cover.

Radioheads latest album is not their best. Coldplay are the best band of our time.

MIA is great and unique. REM had a decent album, vampire weekend are good and what about KOL?

Scooter | 12/6/2008, 1:53 am EST

I don’t like how the media is ignoring Radiohead. All the talk is about Coldplay and Krauss, and then most of these newspaper guys are picking Plant and Krauss ahead of Radiohead as the clear cut favorites, and as having the best album of 2007.

I disagree, I thought it was good but Radiohead’s In Rainbows was definitely better, although the foolish media seems to ignore Radiohead for the most part. That’s what they did when OK Computer competed against Dylan’s album and Kid A competed against Steely Dan and Eminem. I

I don’t like the media and their lack of respect toward Radiohead. Who cares about Lil Wayne and Colplay. It’s not like they created as good an album as “In Rainbows.”

It isn’t like an alternative album hasn’t won in the past, Alanis Morresette’s album won, and U2’s Joshua Tree album won. Although both were very commercially succesful and incredibly popular. Something Radiohead isn’t.

Here’s hoping Radiohead wins, hopefully it will create an alternative music revolution.

Viva la Radiohead!

bennie new york | 12/6/2008, 10:43 am EST

i’d love to see radiohead or lil wayne take home album of the year. lil wayne is legitimately in the pantheon of rappers, and radiohead is probably the best band of the last fifteen years. the only real contenders though are allison&robert and coldplay. aside from the fact that raising sand is a pretty damn good album, i,m pulling for plant and krauss because i dont think coldplay is at all deserving of this prestigious award. coldplay to me represents everything bad and cliched about modern mainstream rock music and are essentially a U2 parody. luckily even grammy voters are smart enough to see this. if they dont, there is no more legitimacy to the grammy awards.

something i noticed about these grammy picks is that in a year where the mainstream is floundering, the grammy voters went more mainstream than ever. jason mraz for song of the year? the end is truly near. i was also suprised to see leona lewis and neyo get nods for big awards but i’m not horribly opposed to either. the voters probably didnt want the show to reflect how terrible the mainstream is by nominating people like john mellencamp or randy newman. they will quickly find out they were screwed either way.

Kyra | 12/6/2008, 10:56 am EST

I love both Coldplay and Radiohead, would give the edge to Radiohead for “In Rainbows”….but the Grammys have always been a joke anyway. SIGUR ROS is the best band ever! Where are all of their nominations?

Nathan | 12/6/2008, 3:10 pm EST

Some of you guys are saying In Rainbows isn’t Radiohead’s best work, well U2’s album “How to Dismantle an Atom Bomb” wasn’t their best work, and it won album of the year.

I don’t think the album of the year should go to Coldplay, Lil Wayne or Ne-Yo. Seriously how did Ne-Yo even get in the category? I don’t like Coldplay because as someone said their U2 wannabes, and they are terrible live. What was that on SNL? Plus you must be insane or lack common sense to give any award to Coldplay over Radiohead.

I’m hoping the Grammy voting fools change their mind, and start actually awarding the best album instead of name recognition. They had pretty low ratings last year when they gave the album of the year to of all people Herbie Hancock, and the previous year when they gave it to the Dixie Chicks when it was the Chili Peppers year.

The Grammy voting bozo’s have made a lot of mistakes in the past, how is it that Zeppelin, Queen or Little Richard don’t have a grammy? Yet Phil Collins has 7. I hope Radiohead wins cause then they can send a “F.U to the Music Industry.” It’s sad when most people know who should win but they won’t due to Grammy politics.

These are such a joke. “American Boy”, “Love Song”, “I’m Yours”? For song the year? Seriously? And Coldplay having a chance at winning Album of the Year? Christ, what are the Grammys based off of? Where is Fleet Foxes or Santogold, to name a couple. These are so pathetic. Jason Mraz, Sara Bareilles, and Adele are what’s wrong with music. If I had seen Nickelback, I would’ve cried. I can’t believe The Jonas Brothers are here too. What is wrong with the people who choose the nominees?

concerned listener | 12/6/2008, 5:14 pm EST

This makes me sad. The fact that acts the likes of the jonas brothers and lil wayne are even nominated destroys whatever credibility the grammys had. the grammys should be given out to those who make the best music and have the best talent, not who sells the most records. our country has an addiction to garbage, cookie-cutter acts with cheap hooks. hopefully we can rebound soon.

trent | 12/6/2008, 7:15 pm EST

in my opinion, radiohead deserves the grammy for the best album. Don’t care if it is better than hail to the thief or kid A, because all radiohead records are simply amazing. Same to Nine Inch nails. Those bands always put music on a higher level, not to mention their live performances. But Reznor will never again recieve a nomination, because is now independent and not a part of this f…ing industry.
Look, now we have the jonas brothers nominated, and next year it will be britney. Both were on rs cover and their records recieved quite 3,5 -4 stars, this is really ridiculous. the grammys don’t stand for quality, instead the stand for quantity of records sold.

@coldplay: i was really a huge fan of paracutes and a rush of blood to the head. In my opinion both belong to the best albums in the last ten years. But X&Y dissapointed and Viva la Vida was just a nice and decent record, but not the best of the year. I think Coldplay or Wayne will make it, because the sold so many records, and the industry wants sell more of them, don’t forget its Christmas time and people need to be reminded what to buy. Sad but true!!

Bartholemew Isshkabibbel | 12/6/2008, 7:47 pm EST

Hi, I would just like to say that Jay Z should be a winner and some recognition should be given to guys like Neil Young, AC/DC, Rod Stewart, and Annie Lennox.Who would think that phoney Gangsta Lil Wayne would even be a nomination!? Also, COLDPLAY are horendous! many of you are just too young to realize who the truly talented Rock N Rollers are!
Who in their right mind would nominate The Jonas
Bros? maybe Keith Partridge will make a guest appearance, or will it be Rick Springfield! what is the world coming to ??For all this crap they are putting out, some of you morons out there are willing to go out, and spend $12 or $13.00 on these crappy CD’s, what the hell is wrong with you, for a liitle creep like Lil Wayne or The Jonas bros, or even Coldplay?-do you all know the value of a Dollar nowadays you stupid idiots!

Leonardo | 12/6/2008, 8:53 pm EST

i think its me but i believe american industries like oscars and grammys sometimes ignore artistic work just to put their own american artist in the front line, lil wayne this guy doesnt deserve a grammy or the jonas brothers and colplay evertime they done the same but now they have changed a bit are the greatest artists? i dont think so.

Spencer | 12/6/2008, 9:05 pm EST

Of course, the Best New Artist of 2008 isn’t even nominated, Vampire Weekend. Who’s heard a better album from a new artist this year? The Jonas Brothers? Really? Come on, Grammys. Have some respect for yourselves.

Love Wayne, but Tha Carter III isn’t Album of the Year material. I’d say it’s third to Nas and Jay-Z in the Rap Album category and Lupe’s album isn’t far behind it for 4th…and that’s only if you go by the Grammy’s nominated albums. I’d say Rising Down is at least as good as Tha Carter III too.

If the five nominated Albums of the Year, In Rainbows is the best, far and away.

It makes me so mad that because of the trailer to a fucking stoner movies, M.I.A. get’s nominated for a track released in Summer of ‘07! Where’s the academy to reward good music when it actually is made, not when something turns into pop. There is amazing alternative music being made all the time by artists who have no chance of being rewarded unless they get so many iTunes downloads. Also, there’s no way Tha Carter III should be up for Album of the Year; it’s not even the best rap album of the year (American Gangster and The Cool were far superior). The Grammy’s are dead. These are the iTunes’ Pop Music Awards ‘09.

Mike | 12/7/2008, 9:43 am EST

Where are talented artists like Bon Iver(album of the year hands down), Vampire Weekend, Sigur Ros, Of Montreal, the Walkmen, Frightened Rabbit, Elbow, the Notwist, British Sea Power, TVOTR, The Hold Steady????????

Adele’s album was not all that. Sia’s latest was far more enjoyable. Madonna and Beck produced very weak albums but yet get nominated???

I don’t think Coldplay will win over Radiohead. They got owned in the last Grammy awards by U2, and most people know that Viva La Vida was at best an average album. In Rainbows was good. If the Grammy voters were smart enough to nominate Radiohead, I’m sure that once they come to their senses and listen to In Rainbows, the album of the year should unanimously go to Radiohead.

Radiohead’s In Rainbows is simply the album of the year. Without a doubt. I am a big Radiohead fan but I am open to all music out there. Coldplay doesn’t touch Radiohead and Viva La Vida doesn’t touch In Rainbows. Most people with brains and know music could tell you that.

bluesman56 | 12/9/2008, 10:38 pm EST

The grammys are about money NOT talent. In the day, grammys were a backhanded insult. The worst thing ever to happen to the “biz” was alowing “samlpling” and accepting rap and hip hop as some sort of music? Fourth grade poetry plus computor drum loops music? really? Whats next? farting in a mason jar?

it seems to me that everyone here’s just rooting for who they like and knocking on who they dont like.thats not what the grammies are about there about selecting music from different genres and choosing the ones that etiher spoke to listeners via sales or two albums that had heart to um albums and songs that really made the year.so please the violent remarks an insults are unessary it only shows your lack of sports manship!!

Coldplay sucks. They don’t deserve shit. However they will take home a couple of awards. i say they take home six or seven. Lil’ Wayne got rap album of the year. But U2 is a punk. Only reason they pushed back their album was to avoid competing with Radiohead and Coldplay for the awards. I mean, U2’s new album is going to be a smash next year. Only person or band that will give them some competition is Eminem for album of the year. Maybe if Greenday shows up with a new album. But Greenday will punk out until 2010, because they want that year to be their year.

musiclover18 | 1/3/2009, 1:11 am EST

i love lupe fiasco and i respect him as a talented artist. he truly deserves to win rap album of the year. he put a lot of work into it and ressurected hip hop with his smooth clever lyrics and style. GO LUPE!

musiclover18 | 1/3/2009, 1:20 am EST

to bluesman56 i know what youre saying about rap/hip hop but please dont downgrade the whole genre.there is good hip hop music with lyrics way beyond your level but the problem is we dont hear it in the mainstream. ever heard og a tribe called quest? u should try listening to their nusic.your opinion will change.

Radiohead deserves every award they’re nominated for. They are the Beatles of our generation. Best groups that were snubbed: MGMT, Fleet Foxes, Sigur Ros. But, the academy does not decide what’s “good”, time does.
