Britney Spears on “Good Morning America”: Tales From the Circus’ Front Row

12/2/08, 12:48 pm EST

Britney Spears made her return to network television this morning, performing “Circus” and “Womanizer” from her new album Circus (out today) on Good Morning America, and two of your Rock Daily editors were lucky enough to win front-row tickets to the Big Apple Circus spectacular via Spears’ Website. So what didn’t you see on national TV while we munched on red velvet birthday cake and wooed on command? Keep reading for photos from the scene and more.

• Longtime Spears choreographer Wade Robson stepped onto the stage before the cameras rolled, checking out the cage from which dancers emerged during “Circus.” Her manager, Larry Rudolph, did a similar walk-through before “Womanizer.”

• Spears’ sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, were carried in and out of the arena several times by beefy bodyguards. Fans screamed their names, and Jayden waved to the crowd from his seat next to Britney’s mom, Lynne. He later bopped a bodyguard on the head with the “Britney Spears/Happy Birthday” sign he was clutching.

• Fans went nuts when the lights went down and Spears got on top of the cage for the start of “Circus.” Though she was crouched in position and concentrating hard, she gave a little wave and smile to people on either side of the stage.

• A stagehand armed with a fire extinguisher crouched next to the stage, ready to douse the flames on the circle Spears’ stepped through at the start of “Womanizer.”

• An army of men in trenchcoats and earpieces roamed the premises to ensure Brit’s safety. The one in front of us scrunched down to avoid blocking sightlines during “Womanizer” and got a special tap on the head from a dancer perched nearby.

• Attendees were given samples of Britney’s fragrances upon entering, and clown noses from the Big Apple Circus on the way out.

• The crew of fans dressed like Britney were relocated for their interview with Sam Champion and sent back to their seats for the performance. The rest of the crowd chuckled during their chat.

• To pass the time between segments, clowns from the Big Apple Circus roamed the crowd, tossing beach balls and performing a few hat tricks.

She is GREAT! Eveyone leave her alone! Happy Birthday Brit!

Rob | 12/2/2008, 1:26 pm EST

Wow, the above article is considered newsworthy. Honestly, who cares about the subject matter other than 10-13 year old girls? No wonder no one really reads this mag for the music reviews and interviews with musicians. Rolling Stone has been a worthless rag now for a number of years.

natty | 12/2/2008, 1:36 pm EST

She did great for all the nervous stress she must be carrying around. Imagine having all that happen to you and still getting out there n front of millions!!

Sassy | 12/2/2008, 1:42 pm EST

Happy Birthday Brit! Britney is human like the rest of us, and I feel a great deal of compassion for her after her MTV show. Love you and good luck on the tour!!!

iluvk9s | 12/2/2008, 1:46 pm EST

Congratulations Britney!! Great job.

Charlòtte | 12/2/2008, 1:52 pm EST

Amazing!!Brit you’re back!I like all of your performance and CIRCUS is beutiful!it’s Your best cd..

SHERRIGRUBER | 12/2/2008, 1:53 pm EST

Happy Birthday Britney! You rock! There is never no reason for you to not have confidence about yourself, dont ever let no one under you take that away, you are on top no matter what your doing

Sabrina S. | 12/2/2008, 1:54 pm EST

Happy b-day Brit!!

You go girl!! Wish I was there to watch you live. Can’t wait to see you perform on your tour.

xoxo

MusicLover | 12/2/2008, 1:59 pm EST

Her fans are not 10-13, more like mid-twenties (which is a key marketing demographic). Ms. Spears has been around for 10 years now and her fans have grown with her. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRITNEY!!! :)

Rose M. | 12/2/2008, 2:03 pm EST

I loved it, she’s back and she will do just fine.Happy Birthday Britney.

Thenativerose | 12/2/2008, 2:05 pm EST

She was great, I will be buying her new CD. Happy Birthday Britney, be safe.

Jen | 12/2/2008, 2:09 pm EST

Why come here regularly to read it if you feel it’s so worthless? I never really understood comments like that. People don’t realize that if you think so low of it, but you frequent it, what does that say about you?

Emily | 12/2/2008, 2:15 pm EST

Rob, read more carefully. Her fans aren’t 10-13 anymore, they are like me and like her, 27, heading up into their 30s, so it is quite relevant to people like me who have been waiting with baited breath for her to tour again. Much like the New Kids tour, take a look at the ticket prices. I don’t know too many kids who are willing to shell out $500 for decent seats. This formerly-aimed-at-teens franchise realized it was no longer kid-friendly and has marketed toward it’s actual demo, adult females in the mid to late twenties. She’s an icon, one that Rolling Stone has documented for years, and if you don’t like it/her, if you think Rolling Stone is a “rag”, then DON’T READ THE MAGAZINE…..that’s all you have to do. Nobody is forcing you to like Britney Spears.

M | 12/2/2008, 2:18 pm EST

The performance was jst BAD. She dind’t even really dance. She stomped around doing a few weak hand gestures and lip synched!

what a waste of time.

sip | 12/2/2008, 2:24 pm EST

personally, i think the performance sucked. looked a bit half-hearted and like it was pantomimed – not really hard hitting and as awesome as she’s done in the past. hopefully, it was just nerves and she can work these things out before her tour.

lip syncing????? | 12/2/2008, 2:32 pm EST

has britney spears EVER sang live? can anyone here provide a link to a video on youtube or wherever that has her singing a song live?

i don’t think any exist b/c she can’t sing. i never understood the whole paying money to watch someone lip sync thing. the ONLY time in 10 years i’ve ever seen her sing live was a clip of her when she was about 10 years old. it’s crazy.

z | 12/2/2008, 2:32 pm EST

Keep rocking Brittny! Your awesome.

Keisha | 12/2/2008, 2:33 pm EST

I LOVED the performance. She looked so good and I loved the dance routine. Can’t wait to buy the album today!

JC | 12/2/2008, 2:33 pm EST

I loved it ….

Happy Birthday Britney

Lisa | 12/2/2008, 2:34 pm EST

Awesome performance. She looked and amazing and the choreography rocked! She is an icon and I cant wait to get her new CD.

re: lip syncing????? | 12/2/2008, 2:37 pm EST

i don’t think she has sang live in many years. i too would like to see her singing something live that’s not from many years ago. can she still sing? or is it all studio trickery now?

samantha | 12/2/2008, 2:41 pm EST

a worthless rag, rollingstone? umm i think not, i bet they make more money than you! and please give the poor BRIT a break, i think she did great!! look at her effin BODY!!! that alone needs an applause. SHHHHHEEZZZZ BAAAACCK!

censoring lip sync questions? | 12/2/2008, 2:41 pm EST

deleting questions about lip syncing? umm ok. like we believe she can really sing. hasn’t sang live since she was a kid.

PCS | 12/2/2008, 2:43 pm EST

I love britney but I too think that her performance was half-hearted. She seemed very still and not that into it. I just bought tickets to her tour so Im hoping she becomes more comfortable and livens up a bit!

cindy | 12/2/2008, 2:43 pm EST

i’ve never seen her sing live. ever. it’s always lip synced or with a backing track.

Olivia | 12/2/2008, 2:54 pm EST

Britney- you are great. I will buy your CD today! Keep the faith and do your best.

Fangtasia | 12/2/2008, 2:54 pm EST

Keep the upbeat stuff happining :)

Dawn | 12/2/2008, 2:56 pm EST

I think its just so negative to watch a Britney performance and just strike it off by saying oh she’s lip syncing again/she’s not giving her best etc. Her performance has seriously bounced back from lat year’s and her attitude with her new album is just positive. I was never a Britney-fan to begin with, but someone’s got to give this girl credit when its due. Lip syncing or not, you have to admit that was a good show.

alo | 12/2/2008, 2:57 pm EST

wow. i expected so much more from her. she continues to make good music but she isnt the same britney from before.

alo | 12/2/2008, 2:57 pm EST

wow. i expected so much more from her. she continues to make good music but she isnt the same britney from before.

CookAlino | 12/2/2008, 2:57 pm EST

Wow she did awesome! Loved the performance!

Happy Birthday!

KK | 12/2/2008, 2:59 pm EST

I’m so pulling for Brit…but this morning’s performance was mediocre at best. I hate lip-syncing period, but understand it for performers that are better dancers than singers and that do huge dance numbers. Since Britney barely danced this morning, why couldn’t she sing live? I hope she finds her comfort level again before her tour for her fan’s sake. I’m pullin’ for ya Britney!! Personally I never buy tickets to any concert that the performances aren’t all live, I can hear the recorded version on my iPod. Needless to say I won’t be seeing this tour.

Viv | 12/2/2008, 3:02 pm EST

Happy Birthday Britney!!

I’m so happy for you!! Keep striving girl. I loved your performance. It’s good to know that you are back and ready for more.

Your documentary on MTV shed a new light on your real life. The life we don’t even know about. With all the struggles and hard times you have to face, it’s great to let everyone see what you go through on a daily basis.

Let’s just hope that after seeing the documentary people will just let you live. Live just like the rest of us.

Take Care Britney!!!

Krystal | 12/2/2008, 3:06 pm EST

You Go girl!!!!!!!!! She is on Fire………… Need I say no more : )

oi | 12/2/2008, 3:13 pm EST

reminds me of her awful vma performance! she was lackluster and blah! she can do better — we’ve seen it… why pay a ton of money to see her in concert if this is a glimpse of what you’ll see? the kicker is she’s got some good songs this go-around…

skye | 12/2/2008, 3:19 pm EST

OMG ..give the girl a break she is awesome..she just needs to find her niche again..she is getting closer every day..I thought this mornings show was great..I think Britney is great..happy 27th !!!

MadDonna | 12/2/2008, 3:25 pm EST

Hey,
You stole my bit. Vogueing and all to boot. I am the best lip syncer, mediocre dancer, not you

HavaHeartHolly | 12/2/2008, 3:32 pm EST

She Was Awesome. I so wanna see her in concert! Cant Wait ^_^

the dude | 12/2/2008, 3:46 pm EST

r u guys serious about the lipsync thing? Have any of you sang a live show at 8 a.m. I can’t even talk before 10 a.m. let alone dance…. she rocks! you guys suck.

roch20 | 12/2/2008, 3:47 pm EST

First: lipsynging is bad…
Second: I don’t get it, too many crappy songs on her new album…
Thrid: How many “comebacks” can anyone gets, before there call it quit???

emma | 12/2/2008, 4:10 pm EST

Whatever, BRITNEY KILLED IT! Haters can hate as much as they want, Britney clrealy owned the stage. I don’t get why the media continues to bring Britney down, its like they’re never satasfied. Get a life u pathetic losers

ADF | 12/2/2008, 4:39 pm EST

I haven’t been a Britney fan in the past but I bought Circus today and really like it! The dance groove and her voice really hit it for me and it was tons of fun. I do see a lack of passion in her performance but it’s one step and one day at a time for Britney and she has my support.
Go get’em Brit…we love you!

Melissa | 12/2/2008, 4:44 pm EST

So disappointed. She needs to get it together and sing. She had it all and I loved her years ago but I lost it.

lip synching | 12/2/2008, 4:56 pm EST

I think what people wondering about is whether she can actually sing at all or if it’s all studio magic now. I don’t ever remember seeing her sing totally live EVER. People that make a living as a singer should be able to sing. People cared about Milli Vinilli. Guess they don’t care anymore. I mean, it’s so obvious.

shayelene zack | 12/2/2008, 5:27 pm EST

hi my name is shayelene.i am a huge fan of you. and i am in grade 5

Katy | 12/2/2008, 5:53 pm EST

She should get serious about dancing and get herself into some daily dance training. I didn’t see much today.

BranFlakesSOUTHBENDIN | 12/2/2008, 6:14 pm EST

So I missed waching it today, but whatever. I saw some of the clips and Brit is back. What we people dont understand is that eveone has downfalls in there life but we are not in the spot light or under a miscriope such as britney.. Did you all forget that she is human to she makes mistakes as we all do
we have the harts to forgive people close to us why cant we just move on with our lives and love Britney for just who she is not what she is.. any way I am totally going to buy her new album I have hurd alot of it online and love it WAY TO GO BRIT keep it up!

Happy Birthday Britney! | 12/2/2008, 6:37 pm EST

Simply the ones who have been buying Britney’s albums for the last 10 years is us guys. Not any guys, but those who are 39 right now. Her demographic is 29 – 39. She brought back the “pop music of the 80’s” music style 10 years ago.

Great to see Britney on Good Morning America! Awesome job!

Derryc Aka D.Neal | 12/2/2008, 7:00 pm EST

rodeo | 12/2/2008, 7:35 pm EST

HEY BRIT ,
WAY TO GO ON YOUR RECOVERY KEEP GOING & STAY WELL CONNECTED TO YOUR BOYS .. BUT STAY ON TRACK WITH YOUR LIFE & GOD WILL DO THE REST FOR YOU …. GOD BLESS !!!!

TB | 12/2/2008, 8:48 pm EST

*yawn* The only real difference between her performance on GMA and the disastrous one at the VMAs is about 25 pounds…

Anonymous | 12/2/2008, 9:25 pm EST

Britney Spears is a fat, talentless skank. Yuck. She didn’t look any better today than she did on that awards show a while back. Even my hubby who thinks she’s great said she needed to cover up her fat rear end. Yawn.

Dont worry about it! | 12/2/2008, 11:13 pm EST

How is she suppose to REALLY sing when shes running around and dancing. She is the shit, and she does not look fat AT ALL! SHES BACK!!

ALL FOR BRIT | 12/2/2008, 11:16 pm EST

MY GOODNESS “ANONYMOUS”, COULD IT BE ANY MORE OBVIOUS THAT YOU’RE SO WISHING YOU LOOKED HALF AS GOOD AS BRITNEY….I’M SURE YOUR HUSBAND DOESN’T REALLY THINK BRIT’S BACKSIDE IS A BAD ONE-HE’S PROBABLY JUST TRYING TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOURSELF.

cutie | 12/2/2008, 11:27 pm EST

you idiots, you try singing and dancing at the same time! its impossible…she’s sung live plenty of times, when she sang songs that done require much moving

Clamhorn | 12/3/2008, 8:19 am EST

This is silly… what we are witnessing is little more than a re-packaging of a stale product in hopes of milking the cash cow for one last go round.

Not to be the turd in the punch bowl, but even when she was at the height of her popularity she was an average singer at best performing songs provided to her largly, if not exclusively, by her handlers. It was always about selling an image to gullible fans; the mediocrity of the music was glossed over by the marketing machine. Now that the image has become more difficult to package, the talent gap between her and the next flavor of the month is getting harder and harder to conceal.

This tour is a train wreck waiting to happen. The music may be more transparent and sucky than ever, but the train wreck is the real deal. It won’t end well but it’s gonna be morbidly fascinating to watch it all fall apart.

Ghost | 12/3/2008, 8:20 am EST

This chick is gross, and she needs to cover her big balloon butt. When your fat you dont wear ‘booty’ shorts. As I saw her cellulite riden backside hanging out of her clothes, I got physically nauseous. I would rather hear the sound of metal being shaped on a bench grinder than her..uh..’music’?

Oh, and as far as singing and dancing at the same time, what about Paula Abdul, Madonna, Gloria Estevan, and dozens more. The thing is IT TAKES REAL TALENT. Which she doesnt have.

Britney Spears was just a teeny-bopper packaged and sold, a talentless girl with a cute face used to sell records to 12 year olds. I doubt she even writes her own songs. No matter, they suck anyway.

You'resospecial | 12/3/2008, 9:24 am EST

Really? You people need to get over yourselves. When you can sell even a measly 500,000 records to anyone, please let me know. Don’t worry, I’ll wait. If she was talentless, jive would have dropped her long ago, and if she was fat she wouldn’t be able to dance as on point as she can . If you knew anything about music or the music industry you would realize that but you don’t. Go wikipedia what pop music is you freaks and get the f over yourselves. You probably work in a sad little cubicle and hate your lives so u sit there behind your screen talking shit. Scared ass bitches.

skull28 | 12/3/2008, 10:12 am EST

The label and the distrubitor are who sells the album not the artist. Its all about the marketing. I worked in the music industry for 21 years, and I have seen the in’s and out’s. You can be the best artist in the world, but if you have no distribution contracts you wont sell many (if any) albums. You can be the worst artist in the world, but if you have agressive marketers from a big label, your album will be pushed to as many stored across the world as possible. Its a matter of reality, if your album is not on any shelves, you wont sell. If your album is on the shelves of %90+ of the stores in the world, yeild will be high. This is all just BASIC marketing, and if Mr special knew anything about the music industry they would know that. They sound like that guy from youtube “just leave britney alone!!! waaaa” LOL

Anyway Britney isnt that bad, but I agree, she really shouldnt be lip synching. In the 80’s that was reserved if the vocalist had a throat problem, or chest congestion/cold. You just cant put off a million dollar show just because the vocalist is hoarse. The production company I worked for would occasionally do this to keep a tour on track. But aside from that, I think its called karaoke.

shut | 12/3/2008, 10:28 am EST

Shut up sad bitches, When you listen a record are you expect the record sing live? Who care if she mime!! just like many of thr other singer.

MIchele | 12/3/2008, 12:22 pm EST

Ok you babbling idiots. It is impossible to dance and sing at the same time with out taking a breather. They have to lip sync at times. DUH!!!!! Brit is all that. Just try to do it like her. Betcha cant!! Ha Ha Ha Happy Birthday Baby!!!

8yrBrittFan | 12/3/2008, 12:40 pm EST

I’m sorry but Britt Britt was mad hot– She def is not eating that cake. Though must to admitt she looked a little surprised by herself, like she expected to bomb it-but face it, she rocked it.

Clamhorn | 12/3/2008, 1:13 pm EST

I don’t know what is more absurd, the fact that she lip-synchs or that the practice is actaully being defended.

The reason she lip synchs so much is not because it’s hard to dance & sing at the same time (for two songs on GMA?), it is that she doesn’t have a great singing voice. If she were standing center stage motionless for the whole show, she would still have to lip synch because she simply can’t pull off real singing live. Some may like the product that is marketed with he image, but I don’t think anyone can successfully refute this fact.

PRB | 12/3/2008, 1:25 pm EST

Brit. is a good intertainer and look good to, who said she is fat might be sitting next to a fat wife.

AD | 12/3/2008, 1:32 pm EST

It was terible for me, she never say thanks or at least say I’m glad to come back, every time I say her name, my daughter sais, si she the ona who was in drugs…..
and plus all the bad things she made. Don’t forget

Mgo | 12/3/2008, 1:34 pm EST

Horrible!!!!

outnaboutnewyork.blogspot.com | 12/3/2008, 2:49 pm EST

Happy Birthday Girl! I knew you were going to make a comeback! you show them all whose the bitch now!! love you. can’t wait til your concert!!

Tee | 12/3/2008, 2:54 pm EST

Although I’m not a Britt fan, as a human being and a woman; I really hope the best for Britt. I think that her album is accurately titled “Circus” because unfortunately that is what’s happening in her life even now. I think her manager may have put her out there tooo soooon. Her performance on GMA was better than the VMA’s, however she still looked somewhat zoned out. I really hope that her manager gives her some down time. I really wish there were people around her that had her best interest at heart instead of viewing her as a cash cow. Good Luck Britt and I wouldn’t be made at you, if you took those babies and moved to Whoville to get away from things for a while.

kage | 12/3/2008, 5:49 pm EST

I agree. Luv the new music…I think she looks really great. But her eyes are still sad looking and she just doesn’t seem ‘back’ yet. She’s being shoved back into the money making habit so many people can make lots of money.

Marcie | 12/3/2008, 6:18 pm EST

I think britney is gr8, but I have to say her dancing looked a little “carefull” and not quite all in. the lip-syncing, well she is dancing around, so it would be stupid to sing live, so all u vultures can rip her to shreds for hitting a note wrong!!

As for all the people saying that they cant understand why this is news and “who care’s about Britney”. Well You apparently, because you took the effort to read it and then post a message!

As for all the people ripping her, you talk shit about her, but it takes a nasty personality to go out of you way to be nasty. It says more about you than enything else, only people with self esteem issues try to make someone feel bad about themself, just to try and make yourselfs feel better, which it wont, because lets face it, marketing or no marketing, she has sold millons of records, look gr8, and handels herself and all the shit around her with style and class!

Life is not about how you fall, it how you pick youself back up that says something, and she, sooo past the test.

I dare any of you to handel you personal defeats with the same class as she has, and hers was with 50.000 camera’s in her face all the time!!!!

I wish her well, and applaud her for taking the high road with all the hardships she has been through. Good on U Britney, keep up the good work!!

D | 12/4/2008, 2:48 am EST

She looked SOOO hot!!!

Clamhorn | 12/4/2008, 9:10 am EST

Marcie,

To quote you… “lets face it, marketing or no marketing, she has sold millons of records, look gr8, and handels herself and all the shit around her with style and class!”

1. Marketing or no marketing, she sold million of records? Absurd. Without the corperate marketing machine creating an image that sells, she would be drinking white zinfandel from a box at some dive bar in jerkwater Louisiana while waiting for her turn to sing mediocre karaoke. Without the creation and marketing of her make believe image, she would be nothing.

2. She looks gr8? She still tries to dress like she had the body that she did when she was 18. While it is silly to call her fat, she doesn’t have that 18 year old body anymore. Someone needs to tell her to dress appropriately for the body she now has… that of an attractive mother of two. And there’s nothing wrong with being an attractive mother of two, except for the fact that her tween fans likely can’t relate to her without the tacky costumes.

3. She “handels herself and all the shit around her with style and class!”? Patently absurd. She is months removed from being a well-publicized train wreck and having a judge rightfully decide that her children are better off being cared for by KEVIN FEDERLINE. Her behavior is a lot of things, but the words style and class somehow do not come to mind.

4. And one final note… she can hardly carry a tune. Maybe I’m old-fashioned in this regard, but aren’t siners supposed to be able to… um… sing?

loveantiques | 12/4/2008, 9:17 am EST

Britney is the SEXIEST WOMAN ALIVE! Me….First row! CONGRATULATIONS BRITYNEY! The songs are so GREAT!

UR WORST- please do yourself a favor… go back to grade school and attempt to learn converstional English. Seriously, even if you had something intelligent to say you sound like such a moron than nobody would take you serious.

Jenna | 12/7/2008, 10:37 am EST

She’s just a marketing product, not a REAL talent. She can’t sing, and she used to be a good dancer. Let’s face it, she’s NO Madonna.

Yall's Just hatin | 12/11/2008, 2:40 pm EST

People grow up….She’s doin the only thing she knows how to do and in all reality it’s ur fuckin fault she’s tried and succeed and then failed and now she’s succeeding again…..so..lay off dumass your fuckin stupid get off ur fat ass and do sumthin with your life ..she’s alot better at everything in life expect keepin it private but it’s not her fault it’s all u nosey bitches….I love you brit always have and always will. Don’t fret gurl your awesome…and get those babies back.

dmy | 12/20/2008, 8:43 pm EST

Britney’s the fakest fake out there. She’s no singer. She’s not even a good dancer. I enjoyed the backup dancers though.

Could you help me. The older I grow, the less important the comma becomes. Let the reader catch his own breath.

Thanks :-) . Gilberte.
