The Big News: Beyoncé and her alter ego Sasha Fierce were victorious in a competitive, debut-heavy sales week as Mrs. Jay-Z and her double-disc I Am…Sasha Fierce sold 482,000 copies, roughly 160,000 more than the number two album, Nickelback’s Dark Horse. For Beyonce, it was her third consecutive chart-topping album. While American Idol winner David Cook didn’t debut as high as runner-up David Archuleta — Cook slotted at three this week while Archie placed two last week — Cook’s self-titled outsold Archuleta’s self-titled by about 100,000 copies in a first week comparison, raking in 279,000 units. Last week’s topper Taylor Swift and her Fearless dropped to four and Il Divo’s Promise checked in at five.

Debuts: Outside the major releases, Dido and her Safe Trip Home landed at 13, Mudvayne’s New Game grabbed 15 and Sammy Hagar’s Cosmic Universal Fashion came in at 94. Further down the charts, Phish’s live album At The Roxy sold 4,800 copies to take 148 and the Doors’ Live at the Matrix limped onto the charts at 191.

Last Week’s Heroes: It was a quick cameo in the Top 10 for David Archuleta as the tweens saw their boy hero plummet from two to 11 after only one week, thanks in part to a 64% sales dive from his debut week. T-Pain’s Thr33 Ringz had a similar fall, dropping from four to 12. With the heated sales battle between Guns N’ Roses, Kanye West, the Killers and Ludacris taking place now in record stores, expect next week’s numbers to be a shootout.

Does Nickelback just crap out albums?

podperson | 11/26/2008, 1:40 pm EST

A 64% sales decline is normal for second-week sales (notably, Taylor Swift also had about the same percentage decline and, as you note in a less disdainful manner, so did T-Pain). And with so many albums debuting (and soundtracks taking up slots), Archuleta’s disc was bound to drop out of the top 10. Unfortunately, lazy reporting (or just dislike for the kid) make it sound like he did poorly second week, which he didn’t. You’re a music publication (supposedly). Be better than this.

Love me some David Cook. Wouldn’t mind seeing him hook up with Beyonce for a duet.

Thank you for noting that David Cook wildly outsold Archuleta, even though Cook is one notch lower on the chart. That’s the opposite of lazy journalism.

tween hero is doing pretty dang good. Staying up there with the old guys. tweens don’t even make any money. What the heck the tweens got it going on.

StarryLaurie | 11/26/2008, 6:23 pm EST

Nice to see great showings by both David Cook and David Archuleta for their debut CDs…if you put everything into perspective, they are both doing incredibly well. I do think it was unfortunate that the writer chose to note the drop in sales for Archie, but not that it is a typical sales drop for the second week.

DIA | 11/26/2008, 6:25 pm EST

This week is all about Queen B.
Give her what she deserve..she was the best. This is not American Idol. Sorry to brake the party.
Beyonce ROCKS this week, even her competition was “rock” artists.

nutterbutter | 11/26/2008, 7:53 pm EST

Man! poor archie

Doc Marten | 11/26/2008, 9:46 pm EST

Finally! Someone with real talent and the vocal ability to back it up tops the charts…. well done BEYONCE! In a musical sea of posers, hacks and pseudo rockers, you have proved the cream always rises to the top!

Virgo99 | 11/26/2008, 10:01 pm EST

Queen Bee showed the little boys how it’s done —> This sistah is F-I-E-R-C-E! Take notes fellas :)

Hahaha!!So, are you afraid that if you don’t diss Archuleta, the world will think you’re a pansy? Give it up dude! Your obvious bias here is quite pathetic. The guy dropped the same amount as Taylor Swift. it’s normal to drop that amount. Hes already at half way to gold. Sorry to dissappoint you that sweet innocent insanely talented David Archuleta is successful.

GOKA26 | 11/27/2008, 6:58 am EST

I love Beyonce but come me She has been in this bussines for almost two decades.Poor Archuleta (which I love too) has been in the business for 5 months…..I think he did great…
I do not understand why Rolling Stone hate him so much…..
Does he have to do drugs to get your approval?
Does he have to act crazy like other Rock&Roll stars to get your approval?
The boy is an angel and I thinK you peolple can not stand “”GOOD PEOPLE”"……..

I’m mixed on Sammy Hagar’s Cosmic Universal Fashion review. The title track and Loud have been ingrained in my head and now I’m compelled to hit repeat. Those two songs make it worth buying the CD. However, save some $ and download them:) Really, I can’t seem to listen to either of those songs enough. I like the the live version of Dreams/Cabo even though my impression would be of “oh, been there done that.” Instead, it really makes me want to drive or fly down to Cabo for a week and forget the real world. Here’s where I get a bit mixed on the music. At first listen ‘Switch on the Light’ and ‘When the Sun Don’t Shine’ sound like fillers. Then you find your self wanting to the jam to the end of ‘Switch on the Light’ and huming the begining to ‘When the Sun Don’t Shine’. Damn, your hooked on both songs but hate to like them because they just don’t fit the rest of the CD vibe. But hey, this CD is varied. 24365….I really don’t know what to tell you however, the song feels like your living in a frat party that hasn’t ended or won’t end. It is upbeat for sure. Jury’s out on if I like it or not yet. Fight for your right to party, well you will either like it or not. He did this song in Tampa and it was awesome; which is why I think he had it added to the CD. Sam, added some old school rock with deep and heavy sounds with ‘Psycho Vertigo’ and ‘Peephole’. I find myself skipping both those songs. They are not bad songs and have a lot to them but much to dark for this CD. Hands down the # 1 skipped song on this CD is ‘I’m on a roll’. This is by far the worst song he has ever done; as the song sings like a commercial. Overall, is this Sam’s best ever? No. Yet, this is the best work he’s done since 2000 when he released Ten 13. For those who like Sam’s music then there are without a doubt 3-5 songs worth listening to. Again, Cosmic Universal Fashion and Loud are jamin’ hypnotic rock tunes that are going to be essential Hagar classics. Thumbs up.

Congratulations to Beyonce and David Cook. Both are fantastic artists!

ArchieCook | 11/28/2008, 1:20 pm EST

It’s true Cook outsold Archie. One thing nobody mentions is that Cook was available for several weeks before Archuleta was available allowing for a much longer sales window. If they both were out and available at the same time for pre-sales, I wonder what the outcome would have been? I suspect Archie would have sold more then Cookie. I like them both but it’s an important thing nobody seems to ever point out.

abigail | 11/28/2008, 2:03 pm EST

who cares about chart position, what matters are the sales!…cook outsold archuleta get over it..as we may recall didnt kelly clarksons breakaway CD debut at number 3?..and it has sold over 12 million albums worldwide!…and as to the comment about that teenagers dont make money and dont do well their first times, have u heard of britney spears, christina augulara (cant spell), taylor swift, miley cyrus, jonas brothers, may i go on?

Tom Dancy | 11/28/2008, 3:03 pm EST

Pshaw! Cook and Nickelback are not in Beyonce’s league…. Posers and wanna be poser rockers will never be able to top someone with her talent. Bey is still kicking ass after more than a decade in the bizz.. in a decade it’ll be Nickelback who? David Cook who? All hail the Queen – keep rocking Beyonce!

Angel | 11/28/2008, 8:24 pm EST

okay serously, david archuleta did an amazing job. I-tunes had a long period of time pre order album for david cook..more than archie…if they were both debuted at the same time I think archie would of crushed david cook.

athena | 11/28/2008, 9:35 pm EST

Nice I’m Glad!!! David Archuleta deserved to win American Idol…He has a better voice than mr. David Cook!!!

gabba gabba hey | 11/29/2008, 12:05 pm EST

Beyonce doesn’t ROCK! She sells perfume and cars.

Haha | 11/29/2008, 12:11 pm EST

“essential Hagar classics” too funny. Hagar the horrible. Last good song he had “solo” was “Lockbox”.

Stephanie & Danielle | 11/30/2008, 4:13 pm EST

ABSOLUTELY LOVE David Archuleta’s CD!!! Every song including bonus tracks is truly AMAZING!! Most musicians can only dream of putting out an album such as David’s. David deserves every great thing coming his way, what an incredible future lies ahead of this really genuine good guy!!!

Clamhorn | 12/1/2008, 8:47 am EST

I have an odd amount of respect for Nickelback… they produce generic, radio-ready crap rock that sounds like any one of a hundred bands spewing out the same crap, yet they somehow have climbed to top of the garbage pile that is bubble gum radio rock.

I guess I have respect for anyone who can advance to the head of their profession, be it creators of sh1tty filler for corperate rock station air time or just the ace jizz mopper at the local peep show. Good on them! Nickelback… the ace jizz moppers of saccarine rock!

I love the new Sammy Hagar album. It is all over the place but it was pieced together and its still better than 90% of the crap out there. Toss it in a party mix and your good to go. Psycho Vertigo is my fav. “fight for your right” and “im on a roll” are not his best but they are fun. The rest is great! Sammys not afraid to have fun in a world of unfun, unfunny, depressing rock dribble that bombards us on a dialy basis. You either get or you dont. If you dont then your not invited to the party at lands end and your taking yourself to serious.

reinharv | 12/27/2008, 6:45 pm EST

Cook’s 5 weeks sales are 715.5K while Archuleta’s 6 weeks sales finally reached 511.7K. Archuleta dropped from #2 to 11 and never got back into Top 10 while Cook remained Top 10 for 4 weeks with stiff competition and Cook for the 5th week landed #13 while Archuleta is now #22. Figures and album sales speak for themselves.

Micah | 1/11/2009, 5:33 pm EST

Lol. Why would Beyonce ever want to do a duet with David Cook? That is a funny one. Keep dreaming, Chloe. Beyonce = talent. Cook = poser. I can’t believe that a$$hole gets attention for his mediocrity.
