Of the 50 to 60 songs U2 penned for their new album, none of the tracks the band wrote while under the guidance of producer Rick Rubin will make the final track list, according to the Edge. “We actually laid all that stuff to one side. Really out of deference to Rick and that set of songs we just said, ‘OK, that’s that,’ and we drew a line,” said the guitarist. “So none of the Rick material went into this project. Everything has been written subsequently. He gave us great advice as much as anything.” The band ended up working with the The Joshua Tree production team of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. As for the rumored album title No Line on the Horizon, Edge says “It’s an image, Bono tells me. It’s like when you’re moving forward, but you’re not exactly sure what you’re heading towards — that moment where the sea and the sky blend into one. It’s an image of infinity, I suppose — a kind of Zen image.” U2’s new album is due out early 2009.

I’d rather hear what they’ve done with Eno/Lanois, Achtung Baby is the last album they made that I still listen to

BrenK | 11/26/2008, 12:50 pm EST

From what Lanios said the other night in Toronto, that the next U2 album could be the album of the decade. Really looking forward to hearing the new stuff, and eventually (hopefully) down the road to hear some of the collaboration between Rubin and U2.

Eno/Lanois contributed on All that you cant leave behind, but this new album is gonna be groundbreaking

screw GNR. Now here’s the most-anticipated rock album of the year.

U2 learned their lesson in releasing ‘Popmart’ too early. Their subsequent studio albums that they worked and refined into what they actually wanted to release, turned out to be mega-hits worldwide. Their taking their time with this new CD is no different. I’m certainly happy to wait until its done? Who likes half-cooked food anyway?

I’m thinking it’s a double album in some form.

I can’t wait. Everything I’ve heard about it is that it’s groundbreaking, innovative and one of the band’s best.

Let’s just hope the upcoming CD isn’t mixed freaking LOUD. I don’t know if it’s Rubin’s fault, but the last three RHCP CDs have been brickwalled, and “Californication” is the worst of the bunch.

Since Rubin’s out of the equation I’m feeling better.

Good call | 11/27/2008, 12:30 am EST

on PopMart, booose (Album actually called POP). But seriously, one more month in the studio on that album and some of the unfinished gems would have been fleshed out such as “Please” “Last Night on Earth” and “Gone” I still think POP needs a full remix, beginning to end, from the Edge and it will become what it should have been all along.

I am actually getting chills thinking about No Line on the Horizon; if they used the Atomic Bomb outtake “Mercy” as a starting point it’s gonna be something else. “Mercy” may be one of the top 20 U2 songs ever.

wow cool a new album. Will be looking forward to that. hope it’s as good as “all that you can’t leave behind”. It’s good that Rubin’s not here. He stuffed up Linkin Park.

I´m highly anticipating the new record after reading so much positive information about it. Band and producers have been talking about songs that are really innovative, so I believe that U2 can publish something really new and fresh. It´s great that they always choose different places to work, because a different place can help to find a new approach for music making. This time I´m curious for the results from the Morocco sessions, because I´ve read about poly-rhytmic elements or even local drummers being included, which would be very interesting.

By the way, I´ve also read about Bono´s piano lessons. If the new record has some piano parts played by Bono the fans (including me) should check if he had practiced enough!

jeff | 11/27/2008, 11:04 pm EST

maybe in your imaginary world, mr mcphisto. christ the new gnr was the most anticipated album of all time.

Nmar | 11/28/2008, 3:15 pm EST

Can’t wait for No Line. Have been a U2 fan really only for a 8 years and in that time have come to appreciate just how good these guys are. Yeah Bono’s a little bit preachy, but hey the guy is a great songwriter and these guys are great muscians.. Looking forward to a new tour too.

Neville Nicol | 11/29/2008, 11:47 am EST

What a relief. No Rick Rubin, “Window in the Sky” was probably the worst U2 song they ever recorded.

There truly is | 11/29/2008, 2:04 pm EST

“No Line on the Horizon” when it comes to U2 no one does it better, longer

Gabdu Kal | 11/30/2008, 3:40 am EST

I’ve been listening to U2 since forever. the last album they did took me to heaven.. can’t wait for this one.. No title or self titled.. which is it Bono..

Erin | 11/30/2008, 2:51 pm EST

Really excited about the upcoming album. Was a bit bummed when I read a few months back that the album wasn’t being released in October ‘08, as originally planned. Hey, if they needed that time to fine-tune, then by all means. Looking forward to another world tour, too. Don’t know if I can wait that long, but I will try. Let’s hope the new material is really as ground-breaking as we’re reading and hoping. U2 needs to get out there and venture away a bit from the radio-friendly poppy tunes such as “Vertigo.” “Beautiful Day” however was a fine tune. I think this next album will be the true test.

Rick Rubin is a worthless hack and U2 are tedious, pretentious and boring. Next!

Has anyone seen Slash? I want to gloat.

Paco | 12/11/2008, 9:00 pm EST

U2 born to be wild, u2 don’t need to proff nothing to anyone, to me the firs part is tottaly rock style as the last album (beautiful day, vertigo, elevation), the other part is something new, the new rock n’ roll, full with feeling, heart, rage, sex, and guitars.
