The Next Cover of Rolling Stone: Britney Spears Returns

A year after her very public meltdown, Britney Spears is back to work and out of trouble. But what has the comeback cost her? Rolling Stone has Britney’s full story in the issue of Rolling Stone that hits newsstands this week. “I feel like an old person now,” Spears tells RS’s Jenny Eliscu. “I do! I go to bed at, like, 9:30 every night, and I don’t go out or anything, you know what I mean? I just feel like an old fart.” Spears says she’s considering lopping off the weave she’s worn since shaving her head in 2007, and counts up her tattoos (they now number seven), giggling.

Click here for a first look at the cover story, and photos from the shoot — and stay tuned for much more:

Why?? | 11/25/2008, 10:45 am EST

Just when I think RS is gaining back some of its musical creditbility they had to go and do this.

son of a bitch | 11/25/2008, 10:53 am EST

so… that is

3 for obama
2 for britney

and where the hell is my queens of the stone age cover???

Anonymous | 11/25/2008, 11:04 am EST

I agree with Why?? whole-heartedly. So she f*cked up her life big time and made a comback? She owes that to herself and her sons…and doesn’t need to get on the cover of RS for it! If she has some talent, I wouldn’t mind but she doesn’t!

Huh??? | 11/25/2008, 11:12 am EST

WTF!!!!!

Walt Ribeiro | 11/25/2008, 11:23 am EST

I like how she’s managed to bounce herself back, good for her.

Rob J. | 11/25/2008, 11:24 am EST

There’s a million other people I’d rather see on the cover, but RS is not stupid. They know a Britney cover story will SELL. You can’t really blame RS.

simon | 11/25/2008, 11:55 am EST

Please shut up!! RS is the best music magazine Maybe there’s a reason why they put brit on the cover!!!She ’s the only one Britney! We see she’s trying hard to let behind her problems and just be happy We must support her corrage! Love brit

BK | 11/25/2008, 12:04 pm EST

What kind of comeback did she make? She put out another crappy album? She got a makeover? She went to the gym? Big deal.

AO | 11/25/2008, 12:08 pm EST

this cover will probably generate the most profit this magazine has seen in a while. so shut up all you britney haters!

JR | 11/25/2008, 12:08 pm EST

Guns n Roses first album in 17 years just gets released and they put Brit on the cover. Thanks Rolling Stone…I really need to know more about Brits breakdown…Brutal

mad at RS with a subscription | 11/25/2008, 12:10 pm EST

If she has enough time to get tattoos and one down below where she conceived her now motherless children why do i have to stare at her bellybutton laughing face cockeyed drug filled brain. GET A REAL JOB… you cant sing except through a mixer and your dad spends your money on alcohol. GO GET A REAL JOB…! OOPS RS YOU dropped the ball on this one!!!

music fan | 11/25/2008, 12:11 pm EST

just because she is not your style of music, it gives you no right to say she is not talented. she wouldnt be one of the best selling, most succesful, most sought after human beings in the world if she was “talentless.” we all have our own opinions about music, so respect others and we may respect yours.
shes getting her life back together and for that she needs to be commended. way to go Brit!

Anonymous | 11/25/2008, 12:12 pm EST

Guys, it’s the Hot Issue for crying out loud. It’s not like a best music of the decade issue or something like that. Britney’s a pretty obvious choice for this type of cover.

me | 11/25/2008, 12:17 pm EST

couldn’t get Axl, could you RS?

Pull your pants up Britney! | 11/25/2008, 12:22 pm EST

Pull your Pants up Britney, this is how you ended up with motherless children the first time around. Call Vanilla Ice Jr., I mean Kevin Federline and put out a lip synching album of crap. Stop smiling, and get a real job… the mixer and recording equipment works harder than you do on an album. OOPS YOU DID NOTHING BUT GET ALMOST NAKED AGAIN AND CAUSE PARENTS TO SHIELD THEIR CHILDRENS EYES FROM YOUR NEXT MELTDOWN!!!

Interesting | 11/25/2008, 12:28 pm EST

So I guess the propogandizing of Brit’s big career re-launch has officially kicked off. And RS was doing so good with covers of AC/DC,Metallica, and hell even that 100 greatest singers list was much appricated. Such a shame. I was really expecting Guns n’ Roses on the cover, but less I forget it is still a corporate magazine.

kliff | 11/25/2008, 12:32 pm EST

You’re supposed to be a music magazine, not a lip-synching mag!
another reason rock ‘n roll is dying a slow, painful death

Ari | 11/25/2008, 12:33 pm EST

Arghh! This infuriates me no end. Instead of trying their best to land a rare interview with the new Gunners, they opt as usual for a lazy choice. Way to go! Don’t tell me a killer piece on the makings of CD and an investigative attempt at trying to uncover Axl’s mysterious life post Spaghetti won’t sell the most copies since 1991.RS, get some rock writers who give a damn and know what fans want.

Swingline | 11/25/2008, 12:41 pm EST

They don’t have the awaiting of the GnR album anymore, time to move on to the next “shoving down the throat” project sponsored by RS.

Got to believe that there are numerous music scenes happening off the radar all over this country that are more worthy of coverage.

They may not contain the overall depth and literary genius of sponsoring the yearly “Brittney’s Comeback” from dead-beat motherhood and riding the musical short bus, but at least it would be rooted in good tunes and giving some hard-working bands some exposure.

Steve | 11/25/2008, 12:46 pm EST

It should have been W.A.R

Nathan | 11/25/2008, 12:50 pm EST

Good to see Britney’s do-able again, never thought this day would come.

Kind of like Hootie | 11/25/2008, 12:55 pm EST

I can understand the reason for putting her on the cover, but giving her new CD three and a half stars? It kind of reminds me when you forced someone to write a positive review of Hootie and the Blowfish. You know this was a deal, you can have Britney for the cover and an inane story, but in return we get a good review. It’s really not surprising in this publicist friendly media world we live in.

someone | 11/25/2008, 12:58 pm EST

…ohhh RS, you screw it up once again…

Ugh | 11/25/2008, 1:10 pm EST

Britney makes crappy music.
Britney takes a break from making crappy music.
Britney is back to make crappy music.

Hey, Rolling Stone…there’s a new GN’R’s record out. Hello in there…hello??

Chad | 11/25/2008, 1:12 pm EST

Axl should of made the cover.

douda | 11/25/2008, 1:13 pm EST

some people can be so mean and sick in their minds jezus grow up or get a life! she rocks and i’m glad she’s back,we all are even yall but yall just are sick with hatered…get a brain people.. ! britney you rock she’s the best damn thing in this pop culture thing

amanda | 11/25/2008, 1:16 pm EST

when all you complainers become the chief and editor of RS than you can decide who’s on the cover. stop b**ching and just let the employees at RS do the job they are being paid to do!!!

Leon | 11/25/2008, 1:26 pm EST

Hooray for Brit! She’s the comeback kid.

Jon | 11/25/2008, 1:32 pm EST

LOL at Guns and Roses. The WORST album of the year.

jack | 11/25/2008, 1:32 pm EST

britney rules and her album is the thing, she’s just great and if you dislike her well then listen to her song mannequin “just scream your lungs out nad cry your eyes out of your head” haters!!!!!!! she’s one of the greatests and You , you are just losers and cowerds on your PC’s posting hating comments yall should be ashamed, britney rocks

dadi | 11/25/2008, 1:43 pm EST

well actually it’s a really good album but some people really hate britney, i don’t know why!! but she’s a great legend and of course she deserves to be on rolling stone mag, yall are complaining worse than a single pregnant woman, she’s great and there is no need to talk about god damned gung’n'n roses, britney is amazing and she’s talented so stop it

We Don't Care | 11/25/2008, 1:47 pm EST

Good for Britney, I guess, but do readers of Rolling Stone magazine really care? John Lennon was on the cover I just recieved, are you really following it up with a story that praises Britney Spears for not staying insane? It’s issues like this that make me angry I have a subscription.

Perhaps you could have justified Britney over other artists if the title wasn’t “Britney Returns”. No, no no! She just had a hit album this year, she already came back. Guns ‘n’ Roses returned!!

archie | 11/25/2008, 1:57 pm EST

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOO

Horn Dog | 11/25/2008, 2:36 pm EST

If you’re gonna put Titney on the cover, couldn’t she be wearing something revealing or showing off some cleavage?

Jessica | 11/25/2008, 2:39 pm EST

Good Job Brittney! I have followed you from the start of your career. You have done a great job. Good luck on this new record. I love it. Everyone goes through their ups and downs, they are just not in the public eye! So people need to stop hating on her. Do not be jealous that she can sing and she is talented.

Laughing At The Haters | 11/25/2008, 2:48 pm EST

You don’t have to be a fan, but really now, it took GnR something like 14 years to make this record. After all that time, you’d think you would finally get tired of hearing about it. Or boycott it for taking too effin’ long. You can’t expect people with lives, living in the real world to wait for nearly a decade and a half for a record because you’re being prissy. Besides, just because YOU don’t like this chick doesn’t mean others don’t. She trainwrecked, we all paid attention and made fun of her then, so why don’t you support the fact that she’s not out shaving her head and flashing her goodies (or yuckies, depending on how you look at it) all over the camera lens. Besides, RS hasn’t been “about the music” for a long time. It’s been more movies, celebrities, and politics than anything else I’ve seen. When they return to “all about the music” then you can complain when a *gasp* MUSIC STAR (like it or not, she is) is on the cover. Would you rather we have some actor in a hit movie or another story about politics on the cover? I’m sure RS would be MORE than willing to accomodate you then.

Just read the issue or toss it, don’t complain like it’s gonna change the cover before it hits your mailbox or newsstand.

LB | 11/25/2008, 2:51 pm EST

RS,shame on you!How could u put Britney on the cover?I guess she`s more legandary than GNR?Oh, no,must be that her comeback is much more interesting than one of the greatest bands in rock history coming back! Can`t believe it!Just when I thought u gonna help rock music come back, u turn pop again.I`m sooo disappointed!!

JokerOC | 11/25/2008, 2:55 pm EST

Seriously RS? She has unfortunatly never left. She has always been in the public eye, good or bad. This is terrible. Guns N’ Roses put out a good album after 17 years and you put out a comeback story on someone who released an album last year???? Sorry guys, but you need to stop selling your covers to Music Studios. I’s rather chew broken glass than hear a meth head cry about her breakup.

Anonymous | 11/25/2008, 3:13 pm EST

Wow, it’s great to see RS embracing “Change” by putting the same old empty-headed tabloid darling on the cover. This must be the result of some sort of post-election hangover.
Can we please move forward?

Britney’s a legend.

She’s the Madonna of our current generation of Pop.

Suck it up and deal.

great album!!!!!

RS has gone to the dogs | 11/25/2008, 3:40 pm EST

Maybe Axl was smart and said thanks but no thanks.

mmmmmmk | 11/25/2008, 4:01 pm EST

I like guns & roses as much as the next girl but… have you seen Mr. Rose recently? Two words: Plastic Surgery

Sure she's a legend... | 11/25/2008, 4:11 pm EST

Just because someone sells a bunch on albums doesn’t make them talented — it’s about quality, not quanity.

britney’s audience has grown up.
the 10 year olds are now 12.
woo hoo.

loosen ur panties, GNR fans. its not the last RS cover that they’re gonna make. and it took forever for GNR to release something new…so now we have to accomodate their time?? sorry…must not be good enough…learn to appreciate all music

Mario | 11/25/2008, 4:34 pm EST

Really, guys…get over it. GNR made a comeback. Or something like that. Great. But are they the hot musical topic of the day? No. Well, maybe at the Dr. Pepper’s marketing agency…but not in the showbiz world. Britney’s latest album, where she will attempt at winning the hearts of Americans once again is the hot issue. Will she do it? Well, RS says, “Yes she can!”

Womanizer | 11/25/2008, 4:41 pm EST

Britney is back, betches. Axl Rose is nothing but a plastic surgery nightmare whose career ended 15 years ago. Get used to it. Oh…and great cover photo, RS!

axl | 11/25/2008, 5:02 pm EST

R.S. magazine is sold out. Stop putting teenie poppers on the cover and put some good real hardcore rockers on like axl rose, this is a slap in the face to the music industry.

jesus fucking christ

andrew | 11/25/2008, 5:08 pm EST

both Britney and GNR are horrible musicians….i want like Wilco, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, Radiohead (not just Thom Yorke) on the this cover.

Okay, switching to Spin magazine now…

Jere | 11/25/2008, 5:30 pm EST

There is nothing to put on the cover if Axl isn’t doing interviews or photoshoots. Anyone else notice that everything used in promoting it at Best Buy is derived from concert photos? RS went with the next best story.

Cristhian. | 11/25/2008, 5:35 pm EST

Just glad they’re finally putting a cover without that horrible white background and those red letters on top! C’mon, can we just go back to the 90’s? Rolling Stone covers used to be known for being fun, not stiff boring as they have been for the past 4 years… and they used to put unpredictable people cover!

Britney Spears = Music Legend | 11/25/2008, 5:39 pm EST

Love her or hate her, Britney Spears is a music legend. She’s sold tons of cds and had numerous number one hits. She has made an impact on the music industry. Many readers of RS will like this issue. Obviously the poll shows. 77% of voters are more excited for Circus, than GNR. Face it. GNR is old news. No one cares. Britney is back and better than ever.

“Love me hate me
Say what you want about me
But all of the boys and all of the girls are beggin’ to If You Seek Amy ” – ‘If U Seek Amy’ By: Britney Spears.

I expected a GUNS N ROSES COVER due to the chinese democracy release, not a BRITNEY SPEARS COVER, she is wonderful, beatiful, etc, but i think that most important was Guns N Roses!!!!!!!

jesse | 11/25/2008, 6:46 pm EST

get over it losers britney’s hot!! obviously you guys need to get laid, and stop judging britney spears. beyonce’s ghetto ass has had her time, gun n roses don’t give a fuck they’d rather have a druging binge. britney’s back on the top charts do you see the other artists on there? Britney Spears rocks.

archie | 11/25/2008, 6:48 pm EST

Britney sucks, and like Beyonce, SHUOLD never be on the cover again (once this year was more than enough). How about some Queens of the Stone Age!?!?!?!?

Kent | 11/25/2008, 6:51 pm EST

“britney’s audience has grown up.
the 10 year olds are now 12.

ps gnr would have been wayyyy better

Jordan | 11/25/2008, 7:04 pm EST

Beyonce sucks, thats why Britney is on the cover!

Gigi | 11/25/2008, 7:08 pm EST

I’m so proud to see that RS admits the artistic power of a very talented performer like Britney Spears.. all the readers must ask themselves, if they want reality or just whatever they like! ..and reality is that Britney will come back as she’ve never done before. In Italy we use to say: “Just shut up and wash your eyes!”

mcogburn | 11/25/2008, 7:11 pm EST

Britney looks Amazing! Can’t wait to buy this issue of Rolling Stone, another iconic cover for Ms. Spears! Circus is her best album to date and can’t wait to pick up my copy December 2nd.

Clayton Jeffrey | 11/25/2008, 8:13 pm EST

The fact of the matter is that, like her or not, most people are curious about Britney Spears and her story. Those people know that if they want an honest account of what’s going on, then Rolling Stone is the place to look. Putting her on the cover and delivering her story to the readers is a great idea.

P.S. Beyonce is a talented artist. You are free to have your own opinion as to what kinds of music you get into, but saying that she “sucks” is irresponsible and childish.

she’s a babe totally but lets see some talent on the cover not a drugged up pop has been ..love and peace friends

OMFG! GNRs Isn’t Even the Same Band They were Way Back Then. Yeah, I Have Great Respect for Them and All (They Are Legends) but They Only Have One of the Original Members and He Took Freaking forever to Put Out an Album! Yeah it is Prob. Fantastic but if He Doesn’t Want to do Interviews and all that then it is isn’t Britney’s Fault. I Swear You People Need to Lay Off. Your so F*ing Winy for Mature Rock Fans. Your Acting like a Bunch of Babies. Harping on Someone who Has Had such a Hard Past Few Years and You Low Lifes Can’t Even be Respectful Enough to be Happy for Her. I Hope to God one Day All of You Go Down a Bad Path and Never Make it Back. It Would Just Make Me so Happy. You Can Hate Britney all You Want, That’s Fine w/ Me. But Don’t Try to F*ing Ruin This for Her Just b/c You Little B’s Want to See a Bunch of Old Men Who Have Been Strung Out for the Past 30 Years. I wish GNRs all the Luck in the World (Even Though I Hate Them) but Britney is WAY F*ing Better. She Did This Shoot a Month Ago, it isn’t RS Having Something Against Beyonce or GNRs. Don’t Harp on Britney or RS just Because Ur Fav Band is a Bunch of Kittens who Don’t Want the World to see How Bad Drugs Have Mutated Them. Britney is Back and You Losers are Going to Have to Deal w/ It!!! And Rolling Stone, I Think You Always and Always Do Wonderful Jobs of Picking Ur Covers. Appealing to ALL Genres, Too Bad Some People Are Too Closed Minded to Respect That. I Commend You RS, Good Job. And in Conclusion I Wouldn’t Expect a GNRs Cover Anytime Soon! But a Beyonce I’m Sure is SOON to Come.

BRITNEY SPEARS: CIRCUS (DECEMBER 2ND!)

It’s the One and Only, Legendary, Queen of Pop, Miss Britney Spears, Bitches!

aldo | 11/25/2008, 9:54 pm EST

no matter how much avant-garde-couture-shit beyonce puts on, it wont be as relevant as britneys coverstory thats fo sure!

Why?? | 11/25/2008, 9:57 pm EST

What the hell!? Screw Britney, we need Guns N’ freakin’ Roses on the cover! Her music was never even good. Guns N’ Roses made waaaaaay better music then her.

Chinese Democracy is gonna b #1!

JimmyHendricks | 11/26/2008, 12:44 am EST

I love how RS and the media has swept Britney’s disgraceful and erratic behavior over the last two years under the rug, and turned her back into the sweet little girl again. How much did her record company/publicist pay for all of this? Stop rewarding negative behavior. It’s only a matter of time before she falls flat on her face again. This is all part of the plan, as the Joker would say–she “wins” the MTV video of the year award, a “comeback” album and documentary, and now she’s sweet Britney the role model princess again. Man, I wish I had her money and marketing team-I’d be hosting the Oscars next year.

hey | 11/26/2008, 1:04 am EST

I was never a big fan of brittney. to me that whole pop thing is boring but we have to admit she can sell albums and was the face of the last 10 years in pop music. Plus the fact she can comeback from where she was last year is absolutly amazing. Her publicist needs a big ass raise

Anonymous | 11/26/2008, 1:59 am EST

As much as I hate GnR, I’d rather see the band on the cover than Britney!

Disappointed member | 11/26/2008, 5:06 am EST

What happened? Her last album was good (Blackout) but this is garbage! I think that due to the talent of Timbaland. The only song on this new album I liked was radar which was on the last one. I am very disappointed but I guess that is what you get when you expect even a little from Mrs. Spears. =o( Also don’t act surprised people. We all know why she was put on the cover. People love “train wrecks” and they can’t turn away from them so Britney Spears + cover = more money for them than the other artists due to her recent list of crazy adventures.

We can all be done with this retarded rag.
Britney is a ghoul. She’s literally talent-less. One of the dumbest women on the planet, right up there with sarah the moose-hunter palin.
Here’s to the entire staff at rolling stone developing terminal illnesses.

Personally there’s only a few songs I like on her new cd, She’s been through a lot.. She’s trying to pull herself back together.. let her eat the cake! .. I’m not a fan of Britney just enjoy some of her songs, but srsly everyone needs to stop hating because not everyone is going to like the same artist/band..
