Bono Launches Download Service for Africa

11/25/08, 11:00 am EST

U2, Jay-Z, Coldplay and R.E.M. are among the bands contributing music to (RED)WIRE, a new download service aligned with Bono’s (PRODUCT)RED campaign, which raises money for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. For $5 a month, members will get a weekly, DRM-free delivery of an exclusive song from a major artist, a tune from a lesser-known artist, and a music video or other content. The service goes live at redwire.com in December. According to Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Bono’s involvement ensures there will be a steady stream of material from top acts: “There’s certain people, where, whatever they ask for, you give it.”

This is fantastic. It is so nice to see celebrities doing things to help others.

The revolution is growing . . .

Bono is a saint.

It´s a good idea to raise money for the Global Fund through video downloads from (RED)WIRE. With projects like this one Bono is wise enough to react on our times in which consuming products has become so influential. His idea behind (PRODUCT)RED and (RED)WIRE is that consumers have the power to contribute to something positive, which is a great thought.

I think this is how we should be requesting help for others. I know when I get 5 pieces of mail asking for a donation starting at 25$, I feel guilty. I’m trying to just afford food each week. But this RED line, well when I need to buy my kids new clothes or a birthday present I sure will look at RED. So I know in my tight budget I can at least help this way. We have to like this.

No Anonymous….no it’s not. And you’re a moron. What, you could only afford one flat screen tv this year and had to keep driving that five year old car? Holy mother of mercy! And those Africans are complaining about corrupt governments, an overwhelming aids epidemic, an even worse spread of malaria, unbelievable poverty, genocide at every turn, and the latest bout of cholera. My, you Americans have it rough! You’re right, save your money lest you only be able to eat out three times a week.

I´ve been reading much about (RED)WIRE within the last days and I´ve already written a positive comment here. Yesterday I visited their website, because I wanted to sign in, but then I read something in “help (FAQ)” that is really terrifying me: Subscribers should earn so called “Warrior Points”, which means that they should persuade friends to sign in, too. Those subscribers will receive some bonus material if they have enough points (1 WP=5 people).

But first of all I have to say that the term “Warrior Point” sounds as silly and aggressive as a computer game, so I don´t find it suitable for this project at all! The original idea to motivate friends to multiply the help for Africa would be really good, but this is a force and a competition: Who has the most WPs, who has the biggest impact, who is the best subscriber on earth!!! The (RED)WIRE staff will certainly see the “Warrior status” of everyone!

And what happens to those who don´t reach enough WPs? Are they worth less and must they feel guilty every week? I mean, this organization should be happy about every single subscriber!
I am disappointed.

I am sorry for my angry words. I still don´t agree with the “Warrior” thing, but a ghost called Bono has been whispering “please do so” to me. African lives are definitely much more important than my disturbed ego. I don´t know if I can ever reach “Warrior Points”, because some of my friends prefer classical music to Rock, which is no reason for me to hate them. But being a bad subscriber is still a bit better than being no subscriber at all. Well, I wanted to sign in today, but (RED)WIRE is not yet available in my country anyway. I hope that I will be able to enjoy great music from planet (RED)WIRE one day.
