Hayley Williams on “Twilight”: “I Connected To It Immediately”

When Paramore singer Hayley Williams finished the first book in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series earlier this year, she joined the legions of teens who became instantly enamored with Meyer’s vampire romance. “There’s such obvious tension between Bella and Edward, and I just connected with that so much,” Williams says. When she heard the movie version of Twilight was in production, Williams immediately took a proactive approach. “I was calling anyone and everyone I could to figure out how we could be a part of it,” Williams says.

Inspired by both the relationship in the book and personal experiences, Williams penned the lyrics to “Decode,” which Williams’ bandmates initially thought were “harsh” until she explained the premise of the novel. “Then I think everyone just really locked on the whle vibe of the song, and did a great job getting the whole picture of the book,” she says.

With a nearly-finished song in hand, Williams went straight to Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke to plead her case. “I knew the song was right for the book, and I knew our fans were into [the series],” Williams says. Not only did Hardwicke approve of “Decode,” but she commissioned the band to write another song, which became “I Caught Myself.”

“Decode” became the lead single for the Twilight soundtrack, which debuted at number one in early November, and Paramore performed the song at both a Hot Topic event and on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this week. The band also had the honor of attending the Twilight premiere in L.A. last week. “I thought the overall tone of the film was perfect,” she told us. “Catherine Hardwicke is incredible with teen angst in her films. She really captured the characters perfectly. I can’t wait to hear what everyone has to say about it.” The buzz held up: Twilight took in over $70 million over the weekend.

There is one thing Wiliams would like to clear up: she’s neutral when it comes to the battle among Twilight fans over whether vampire Edward or werewolf Jacob (who forms the third part of the series’ love triangle) is better suited for Bella. “I think I might have made a joke that I was team Jacob, but honestly I’m down with both of them. I think they’re great…guys,” she says.

Alexxxxxxxxxxx =] | 5/17/2009, 3:45 pm EST

wowwwwwwww, Hayley Williams is my idol. dont trash the precious girl. She’s everything you’re not, i can guarentee that. She is one of the FEW talented singers out there. she sounds the EXACT same live as she does on her record. how often do you get that? dont judge her on her interaction with the twilight movie. listen to her music and get to know her on a better note. shes amazing and i would kill to be anything like her.

peacemaker | 5/14/2009, 7:00 am EST

jeez people, whats with all the fuck?? paramore are great, so are muse, the film could have been better but the books were fab!! (or at least the first one was) Now can stop all this fucking?!?! :P

angel | 4/18/2009, 1:44 am EST

The books SUCK! And Bella is a total Mary Sue, which is so annoying!

len | 1/19/2009, 9:18 am EST

MUSE SHOULD HAVE 110% BEEN THE MAIN BAND FOR THE FILM NOT FUCKING PARAMORE.

isabella | 1/18/2009, 11:46 pm EST

bbe best band ever!!!! :-)

Tonystark616 | 12/11/2008, 12:06 pm EST

About Paramore;I would RATHER listen to them than put up with Miley Cyrus, or worse,Paris ‘Boring’ Hilton!

I love the ‘Harry Potter’ novels, but even i have to have some respect for Both Paramore and the ‘Twilight’ Novels!

Just because Hayley Said that she did not read ANY of the Harry Potter Novels(i wish that she did, because she would have made a Cool Ginny Weasley,in my eyes!) Does not give any of us the rights to hate her very guts for it!

Catch You Later!

Maria | 11/26/2008, 6:52 pm EST

Oh, I think he was trying to show the gulps of air/holding breath in the biology scene that edward expresses in midnight sun. if you read it, it makes more sense

Twilight Mom | 11/25/2008, 11:33 am EST

Wow what movie did everyone see? Are you in insane?? If you haven’t read the book how could you understand the passion and longing they have for each other. How they feel one could not live without each other and the physical pain each of them feels when apart. I can only hope the studio hires a new team of writers, directors and hair and makeup crew for ‘New Moon’. They should also consider a soundtrack that actually works with the scenes.

nick | 11/24/2008, 10:19 pm EST

im the lead singer of a band panic! at nabisco because panic at the disco and fucking bands like paramore suck balls.

vampires have been reduced to a fucking low grade emo standard of dick-up-ass. fucking bands like paramore obviously go for it because they’re the result of a teenage nation of ‘emo’ the opposite of the original dark and sickening gothic idea, the ones who idolized fucking dracula, not some dumbshit ’sensitive’ vampire story. vampires are meant to be fucking evil and sadistic.

waxpoetic | 11/24/2008, 8:03 pm EST

I love that Paramore has gotten so big that Hollywood is asking them [Hayley] to write a song for the movie. Kudos to Pmore and FBR for signing them!

i really loved this book but i like the books more than the movie. there’s no love interest that bella shows for edward……sorry. But it wasnt terrible, i’m deffinately onna buy it on DVD

gwens8 | 11/24/2008, 6:00 pm EST

Twilight was one of the sexiest movies I’ve ever seen, and at 54 years old, I’ve seen alot of them.

Ghisy | 11/24/2008, 5:19 pm EST

The movie was just fine and edward looked hot! but the books are way better. my frineds loved the movie, i just think that bella and edward’s relationship was rushed. Next movie better be good. this goes to evryone who thinks the series suck… you are so wrong about them, you are just idiots!!!!

Andrew90 | 11/24/2008, 5:16 pm EST

Ok,

Twilight is an original concept with a childish execution. There were some interesting elements in the story, but it is definitely NOT the amazing love story fans make it out to be. I read the book and saw the premiere a day later and was stunned by the unintentionally funny scenes, simple plot with NO character complexity (girl falls in love with vampire), and boring scenes.
Again, I UNDERSTAND the concept that a misunderstood teen falls for the impossible love, but it was written like a 5th grade fan fiction, and the movie was even worse.

Not the worst, but also not the best. And I don’t go to the movies just to see an “OK” movie. I want to be blown away.

Lena | 11/24/2008, 5:13 pm EST

I read all the books and i absolutly loved it. the movie was aswesome and edward was sooooo HOTTTTTT anyway the only thing i didn’t like was that bella and edward’s relationship was rushed and also the movie was like about 2 seconds. but the movie was still awesome and i hope the next one will be way better.

David Spade | 11/24/2008, 4:48 pm EST

Yeah I liked this regurgitated drivel a lot better when it was called BUFFY

Ria | 11/24/2008, 3:51 pm EST

I never read the book and I watched the movie. o.o crappy? yes. it was so short and in the beginning, everything was so awkward. i had a good laugh though. im still thinking about whether i should read the book. -.-

N.S. | 11/24/2008, 3:48 pm EST

1.It is a action/teen romance movie.
2.It is NOT horror. PG-13 should already give you that fact.
3.Twilight is a big book with a lot of detail and special effects are needed for it to be great.
4.Special effects cost money.
5.The Cullens have some really cool stuff in the books meaning that money is needed.
6.People wanted action so more special effects needed.
7.Stephenie Meyer had to approve of everything in the movie.
8.Don’t you people think that if the characters didn’t act the way she wanted them to she would do nothing?(manners[how Edward treats her], expressions[Edward’s faces to her], and voices[her stuttering], etc.)

cherryluvzedlol=] | 11/24/2008, 3:31 pm EST

Well…I started reading New Moon first because I didn’t know it was a series. As I read it I feel in love with it but it didn’t make any sense. So somebody told me about TWILIGHT and I knew I had to get it! I did and I love it so much I read the third and forth edition in a week! When the movie came out…I was a little disappointed because they cut out alot of scenes and mixed some parts up which kind of confused me. But I gotta say, Edward looked freakishly sexy…and I think the meadow scene was my favorite part. It could have been better. Lets just hope the director follows the book more…lol…no offense. Still love TWILIGHT though!=]

Amanda | 11/24/2008, 3:30 pm EST

twilight was the greatest movie ever. i absolutely loved it! edward and bella have a great connection, and they did a great job

caz93 | 11/24/2008, 3:29 pm EST

i live in the u.k and we haven’t even got it over here yet, but by the sound of it, it’s a pretty mixed opinion on the movie. But the way some of you describe it, is kind of dissapointing. I KNOW im gonna love the movie, but i guess we can’t all love something

Mariah | 11/24/2008, 3:25 pm EST

I found the movie really good. It was not exactly what i espected but i profoundly found it enjoyable to watch. I definately am watching it again

anonymous | 11/24/2008, 2:59 pm EST

I saw ‘Twilight’ on opening weekend and was far from impressed. The special effects were cheesy, the story seemed detached and the direction was poor. The relationship between Edward and Bella was rushed and awkward in the movie. It was a disappointment.

sylvia | 11/24/2008, 2:58 pm EST

i was disappointed Kristen Stewart had this werid studder which completley ruined the scenes, Bella never was like that. Robert mixed up his emotions, like when Bella entered the room to Chemistry he seemed like he wanted to puke, when in the book he wanted to kill her, he was stiff and very uncomfortable. If her scent was the greatest scent to him why would he want to puke on her.

sylvia | 11/24/2008, 2:56 pm EST

The movie felt like it was 2 seconds long. It had no detail only event after event which made it terrible. I hated how they added that scene with the field trip and Edward was acting like a gerk, Edward was never mean to Bella in the Book, he wanted to protect her. i hated how they mixed scenes up, like the Meadow that was Edwards special spot that he should to Bella, in the movie it wasent like that at all. And when Bella escaped the hotel to James, they made it seem so simple, when in reality it was so hard for her to get out. I just hope in the next movie “New Moon” they have more detail it would make it a lot better.

b0oLoVE | 11/24/2008, 2:49 pm EST

I have read all the books, and have yet to see the movie, however I think it is safe to say that there will be differences(sp?). And I except that. Know for all you idiots who have idiotic ideas about how it should of been done shut your fat traps. K?…ok…TWILIGHT ROCKS IN ANY STATE IT’S IN!!!!!!
…..

Fan | 11/24/2008, 2:30 pm EST

I loved the movie!!!!!!!! I loved the books!!!!!! With both I felt like I escaped from my life, for just a short period of time.

anonemosse | 11/24/2008, 2:27 pm EST

The book is crap the movie has to even worse.

pherngully | 11/24/2008, 2:16 pm EST

I really enjoyed the movie, I know alot of critics are stating how “Twilight needs more flash”, but I love how the movie stayed closely tied with the novel and how the director and cast members worked with the 2 hrs they had on screen to make the movie a success!!

nelbie90 | 11/24/2008, 2:10 pm EST

i read the books and like the movie….it wasn’t a horror movie…it even says that its a teen-targeted movie about teen romance….

Some people... | 11/24/2008, 1:57 pm EST

…just hate everything thats popular. You either have very poor taste or a shallow experience with film if you think this movie is even in the running for worst movie ever. Go see the forbidden zone if you want worst movie ever.

("\.:.:./") | 11/24/2008, 1:54 pm EST

Good for those who enjoy this series. Lets just hope Meyers doesn’t take her millions and use it to help discriminate against minorities in her home state. And maybe all that money will help her to have an original idea.

fortknox | 11/24/2008, 1:26 pm EST

OK. How do say this and be nice??????? This has to be one of the worst movies of all time. Not just this year but of all time. Everyone was expecting an horror and was horrified. I alone with 40 other people, but who was counting walk out of this movie.
