Beatles to iTunes “Stalled,” Says McCartney

Still wondering when the Beatles‘ catalog will finally make it to iTunes? Don’t hold your breath, as Paul McCartney told a press conference today in London that negotiations between Apple Records and EMI have “stalled.” “When it’s something as big as the Beatles, it’s heavy negotiations,” Macca said. “We’re [the band members and their estates] very for it, but there are a couple of sticking points. It’s stalled. No change there then!” McCartney didn’t elaborate on the supposed stumbling blocks, but past theories range from iTunes’ strict 99 cent a la carte song fee — which upsets pretty much all the major labels — to the much-needed remastering of the catalog. Back in March, a deal between the Beatles and iTunes seemed imminent, especially considering the solo careers of all Fab Four members are on Apple’s download service, but with McCartney’s announcement, we’d hold off from including a download of Revolver as a Christmas present.

Isn’t Paul dead?

Are people really hung up on being able to download the Beatles? Why not just BUY the CD’s? My local Walmart has almost all the Beatles CDs!!!!!

Rock Singer | 11/25/2008, 12:56 pm EST

The way I’m reading this is that the problem isn’t between Apple Corp. vs Apple Computer’s rather Apple Corp. vs EMI there record company. Thanks EMI, more sand in the VASELINE.

I am selling Beatles cds from the trunk of my car

FabFour | 11/26/2008, 2:15 am EST

At this point the Beatles’ cd masters are over 21 years old. Are they EVER going to remaster the catalogue?

Keith Richards | 11/28/2008, 1:03 pm EST

Hey Mick, you’re a wanker…

I don’t believe that there’s any sticking points. What I do believe is that EMI/The Beatles are doing what they’ve always done since the band broke up: They release merchandise on a very conservative, long-range schedule to maximize profit. Notice how methodically they put out each little drib and drab and how well they are able to ring every possible cent out of product that’s 40+ years old. The American album remasters. The “Love” album. The Cirque Du Soleil dvd a little while ago. Next, the new Beatles video game (which is probably the real reason the downloads won’t be coming any time soon.) It doesn’t matter to them if you don’t get to hear the remastered catalog in your lifetime. It’s a long-term strategy that will keep Apple/EMI/The Beatles family solvent for decades to come…or at least until the end of the world in 2012.

What might be missed here is that the cds you can buy at walmart, or whereever are *very low quality* as they were not recorded from master tapes. Any Beatles phonograph can beat the equivalent CD hands down, for quality.

That’s why something like the “Love” album referred to above is so valuable, as it has been taken from original masters.

Evidence seems strong that somebody is holding back to maximize long-term profits. (Walt Disney has done this kind of consumer manipulation, as they added artificial deadlines beyond which certain videos would not be available.)

In the Beatles world, another example was what happened when Michael Jackson bought Northern Songs at one point and quickly moved to stop sales of certain Beatles titles, among them the Yellow Submarine album and movie video. (this was finally overruled (don’t ask me why or how) in 1997, when the YS DVD was released, at last…)

Mick Jagger – The Beatles are the furthest thing from “wankers!” You’re just jealous because the Rolling Stones will forever live in their shadow.

J – No, Paul is NOT dead.

Yoko Ono – Jerk.

I really hope they get the songs up soon. I think it’s stupid that, even though all of the members of the band (or their estates) are okay with it, but it’s not happening. The Beatles have enough freakin’ money to last multiple lifetimes, so who cares if they only charge 99 cents to share this music LEGALLY with the world? Most people I know use Limewire to get their music, which is horrible. I get CDs, but even they’re low quality, and I really only get them so that I can upload them to my iPod, but it’d be so much easier to just get them from the iTunes store directly. JUST GET THEM UP THERE ALREADY!!!

peace and love

I’m the one holding up the iTunes because I want my cut! Finally…

Mick Jagger, if you were the real deal then u wouldnt say that.
1: The Stones got on well with the Beatles, it was the tabloids that made up that whole rivalry thing.
2: as much as i love the stones, youve got to admit, they both did i wanna be your man, the stones used string quartets in as tears go by a couple of months after yesterday, sitar in paint it black after norwegian wood, satanic majesties just after sgt pepper, and the plain white cover of beggars banquet just a couple of months after the white album. when you look at it like that, its a bit “monkey see monkey do” not that i dont love the stones, but bands in the 60s were inspired by the beatles by default

I wish everybody would stop wishing. Money is the issue – always has been, always will be and the issue will NEVER be solved to anyone’s satisfaction as long as anyone connected to the group, members and heirs alike, are still alive. It’s a terrible thing to say but, unfortunately, true – for all these years it’s always been greed, pure and simple. Someday, when their music falls into public domain, the wish may come true. By then, however, all the wishers will be dead making the whole point moot. A very, very sad and stupid situation…

I remember the days when it was about the fans and the music. Now it’s strictly about how much cash they can make from it – to hell with us fans. I think Rubbersoul is right – it’s never going to happen: downloads, remastering – the whole lot – as long as these guys and their relatives are alive to squabble over who makes how much. Makes me sick.

Jon Winchell | 1/15/2009, 1:11 pm EST

I think if Paul Mccartney songs were on Itunes and let us say there a two million people and maybe more that love his songs he would make two million dollars or more. Nothing wrong with that or divide that by four beatles and that’s a lot of fans who love the beatles, including myself.

Desmond & Molly Jones | 1/17/2009, 12:42 am EST

I just can’t wait until The Beatles’ music availible on iTunes. There are alot of songs by The Fab Four I cannot find, and it bothers me alot.
Beatle’s 4 Life!

Treeorc | 4/12/2009, 1:15 pm EST

It’s a matter of integrity and the Beatles are right in not allowing their stuff on Apple. Apple is among the most paranoid and proprietary companies in the business and they are continuing to destroy the music business as we know it. Apple needs to stick with computer hardware and software and leave the music stuff to those within the industry that actually know what they are doing.

Dennis O'Dell | 6/29/2009, 1:12 pm EST

Beatles forever!

beatlesstones | 9/1/2009, 1:11 pm EST

I don’t see why they just can’t get a deal across. They would make a ton of money if they did.

Whitehorse | 9/3/2009, 3:14 pm EST

The Beatles were taken over by the Illuminati…only Ringo remains of the fab 4…you are not a Beatle faul.

Prahlad | 9/6/2009, 8:04 pm EST

All i can say is that the remaster should have a CD with no video or such thing attached with every album. It magnets more money and who cares? A Pay-Per-Download would have been beautiful. Or let em download for free. It really makes few more dollars and when it comes to the “McCartney” thing, makes everything business-minded which makes me quite disappointing. His way of viewing things. Box-set is essential but a DVD is useless thing.

Prahlad | 9/6/2009, 8:18 pm EST

iTunes is also a great concern. I think Apple Corps should have made a deal or something with Apple Inc. for the catalog for some extra bucks. Eagerly awaiting and i’m not ashamed of saying that this will be first collection i would ever have until i have get some pay.

Father McKenzie | 9/9/2009, 6:36 pm EST

No one ever listens to me, but I’ll say it anyway. Stop all of the bloody bickering!

Sgt. Pepper | 10/11/2009, 6:24 pm EST

“Hey Hey Hey Hey”, listen. What Sir Paul McCartney is doing is improving the song catalog for itunes, He’s tring to impress the fans and everyone is blaming Paul for the money deal. Proof? Paul is trying his best to release the unreleased song by The Beatles “Carnival Of Light”. He wants the fans to get the whole Beatles packgae by releasing all the unreleased (with an unlikely possibility of releasing all of them on an Album. Cathy’s Clown, Sucide, ETC) All i’m saying is “We Can Work It Out”. Paul is using his music mastermind to work on the CDs so “Let It Be”. “The End” “Her Majesty”.
