Weekend Rock List: More Greatest Singers

11/21/08, 5:23 pm EST

Photo: Slattery/Retna UK

In our current issue of Rolling Stone, we looked at the 100 Greatest Singers of All-Time. Paring the list down to only 100 was a difficult task, and thus this weekend’s Rock List is dedicated to the singers who missed the cut. Check out our entire list here, tell us which singers should’ve been included and on Monday we’ll reveal the winners of the loser’s bracket. Before this site gets besieged by Rush fans voting for Geddy Lee, check out our personal favorites who didn’t make the Top 100:

Frank Black
Ian Curtis
Maynard James Keenan
Eddie Vedder
P.J. Harvey

i’m not sure i’m prepared to boot off as many as necessary to fit in all of following, but here goes (in no order):

ruth brown
david ruffin
peter wolf
george jones
Louvin bros
bill monroe
odetta
gram parsons
ali farka toure
paul simon (i’m willing to debate many of these, but this seems an odd omission)

woody guthrie
ella fitzgerald
Billie Holliday (maybe some confusion about whether billie and ella are of rock era….but certainly the ends of their careers were)

wynonie harris
lucinda wms
michael stipe
jimi hendrix
buddy guy
barry white
loretta lynn
eddie rabbit (no, i’m kidding)

How about Geddy Lee? What do the dumbasses over at Rolling Stone think of that suggestion, oh right.

Sean | 11/21/2008, 6:25 pm EST

T-Pain obviously.

your mom | 11/21/2008, 6:59 pm EST

Levi Stubbs, Levi Stubbs, Levi Stubbs!
Tori Amos!
Bryan Ferry!

also:
Tammy Wynette
Rufus Wainwright (newer in the Rock game but I think he qualifies)
Emily Saliers/Amy Ray (Indigo Girls)
Sarah McLachlan
Lucinda Williams
Alanis Morrissette
Fats Domino
Eric Clapton

and, yes, David Lee Roth

And from the Rolling Stone list:

Frank Black
Ian Curtis

Oh, and PLEEEEZE include Geddy Lee. I loooove a singer whose vocal chords sound like they’re being squeezed in a vice by Joe Pesci.

your mom | 11/21/2008, 7:03 pm EST

I forgot….

Karen Carpenter.

brent | 11/21/2008, 7:05 pm EST

Aaron Lewis (staind), Eddie Vedder, Paul Simon, Madonna, Sarah McLaughlin, David Draiman (disturbed), Ronnie James Dio, and Chester Bennington all would have made my list… but i can’t believe Trent Reznor was left off. his work with NIN and his collaborations with other artists (Tori Amos for one) really shows off his range

If Paul Westerberg belongs on this list, then so does Dave Pirner and Johnny Rzeznik. Ergo, none of them belong on a greatest “singers” list.

The most glaring omission has got to be the most underrated singer (please let rolling stone about this omission)… SHANNON HOON… his short body of work and great following should not be overlooking and his brief catelogue of music is amazing

Lucinda Williams
Emmylou Harris (I sincerely can’t believe she didn’t make the list.)

Steel Dragon \m/ | 11/23/2008, 5:51 pm EST

OK, I assume this includes all genres, if that is the case:

(not a huge fan of these, but these are the best voices in the world)
Lucianno Pavarotti
Placido Domingo
Barbara Streisand
Celine Dion
Sarah Brightman
Josh Groban
Martina McBride
Faith Hill
Carrie Underwood
Ella Fitzgerald
George Michael (especially over Jacko, King O’ Crap)
Billie Holliday

for my own additions
Jon Bon Jovi
James Hetfield
Lou Gramm (Foreigner)
Sting
George Strait (greatest country singer ever)
Eddie Vedder
Klaus Meine (Scorpions)
Jimmy Lafave (Texas country artist)
David Gilmour (don’t remember him on it)
Kenny Chesney

And please keep Trent Reznor FAR FAR Away from this list. And Thom Yorke over a lot of people proves RS Mag really does like to blow Dylan and Radiohead.

jazzy24 | 11/23/2008, 7:17 pm EST

I can’t believe Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald are nowhere to be seen on this list!!!

My personal preference is John Mellencamp. The way he conveys emotion is almost like he talking directly to you, holding a conversation. (Plus he makes me shake my ass!)

Oh thank God you guys mentioned Maynard James Keenan up there. I was surprised he wasn’t on that other list. He may not be the most well known (at least not around where I am..), but damn, he can sing.

Definitively, Tom Chaplin.
