Satellite Radio Listeners Rankled By XM-Sirius Merger

11/21/08, 2:02 pm EST

Now that the Sirius-XM satellite radio merger has gone into effect, the programming has merged as well. And many longtime listeners are not pleased, crying foul over dropped shows and channels that some say they didn’t know were going to to be changed. Sirius XM, however, says the newly combined network had to weed out redundancies, and in many respects improved the listening experience for its 19 million subscribers (though that hasn’t reflected in their freefalling stock prices). Rolling Stone’s Brian Braiker spoke to subscribers, industry experts and the president of Sirius — click below for his full report.

I’ve been an XM subscriber for a couple of years, and have always felt it’s lineup and playlists were deeper and superior to Siruis. It seems that Sirius has dictated those things since the merger, which isn’t good. However, I haven ‘t stopped listening to the Grateful Dead channel for two weeks, and they kept Dylan’s excellent show, so it’s not all bad.

Now its that Fruit snack Rap Shit frm 50cent and Shade 45 Eminume’s bullshit, they play the same shit over and over. I hve 3 units which i’m thinking about canceling if i wanna here that shit why should i pay for the service when all i hve to do is cut on my radio and get it for free…Bring Back the 66 Blaze Show w/Leo G “The General” and Mizz Kitti’s Korna

I don’t actually subscribe to satellite radio, per se…

But I get a few scattered XM/Sirius channels included with my DirecTV service. (Previously XM only.)

These channels had a shakeup too, and so far, not for the better.

I subscribed to XM for the commercial free music with few DJ interruptions. A couple of years ago in a rental car, I heard Sirius and was disgusted with the yammering DJ’s and their cutting in over the beginnings and endings of songs. Now with the merger, XM channels suffer from the same. I sadly will not be renewing my subscription.

Chris | 11/22/2008, 11:30 pm EST

Since my XM service was expiring in December, and how this merger has been handled, it was an easy decision to cancel.

However, the actual act of canceling is another story. XM lines are so overwhelmed with people complaining and canceling they cannot keep up.

The arrogance of SiriusXM is overwhelming. They list Channel A = Channel B on the programming list but rarely is there an equivalent. I bought satellite radio to hear an eclectic display of music — not hear the same Sirius playlists recycled a la ClearChannel every 4 hours.

At any rate, when you call XM, you’ll have to tell the first CSR your life story as to why you’re canceling. Then they’ll transfer you to the “cancellation department”. If XM doesn’t hang up on you at this point, someone will try to sell you a year at half off. “No thanks, I’d like to cancel.” Then they’ll try to give you 3 months for free. “No thanks, I’d like to cancel.”

i loved mzkitty(where is she now?) from 66raw xm.i am not feeling shade45 at all,i refuse to pay for something i don’t like, there’s too much dead air, disrespect, mostly east coast music.i heard leo g on the other station,he just dont sound right there.gotta let it go.besides i am the customer

staggerlee | 11/24/2008, 9:17 am EST

You buy Sirius for Howard.

Bah Bah Booey

I subscribed to XM in 2005 for 5 years because I absolutely LOVED it because there were no commercials and no obnoxious DJs to deal with. Now with Sirius XM I am EXTREMELY disappointed with the format and the INCREDIBLY OBNOXIOUS DJs. I still have 2 years before my subscription expires if the station doesn’t expire first! Hey “Dusty Street”, SHUT THE HELL UP and just play the frickin music!!!!

Smerky from Pensacola FL | 11/24/2008, 9:01 pm EST

I have been with XM for almost 8yrs. The classic rock stations played songs from the album that radio dj’s didn’t play, then XM mimics the radio. And at first, there were no dj’s talking and now there is a lot of talking when XM advertises commercial free. Yeah! Right!

. | 11/25/2008, 12:36 pm EST

How funny. I’ve had Sirius for a couple of years, and I have the same feeling about XM that many of these XM subscribers feel about SIRIUS. I like Sirus’s indie rock and hip hop channels way better (no more old school rap! ahh!) I think it’s a matter of what you were used to more than anything else. C’est la vie.

Anonymous | 11/26/2008, 11:50 am EST

I was a huge fan of 66 raw and initially switched to XM radio because I didn’t like Shade 45 and the other garbage hip hop stations that Sirius carried. Then I wake up on Nov. 12th and that garbage was back. I immediately called and canceled my subscription and told them they could kept the 3 mos. free. I can get better music free on my local stations without the paying to listen to corny DJ’s that talk too much and don’t play real hip hop.

Anonymous | 11/26/2008, 12:31 pm EST

I am very displeased with the addition of Siruis programming, I signed on to XM for their folk, old time radio, 40’s and 50’s along with classical. My reciever is malfunctioning and I think I will not get it fixed and drop my subscription when it expires, unless Siruis drops out of the picture.
I miss moments to remember on the 50’s station as that was the music I grew up with.
Fie on you Siruis XM

jim | 11/29/2008, 1:01 pm EST

My favorite xm channel was fine tuning, an eclectic mix of intelligent rock, classical, world music, and whatever. Wish I knew who the DJ was to congratulate him on it. When fine tuning had a bad song or two, I switched to deep tracks, the village, or an oldies station. Now fine tuning is gone, and I see 6 channels of hip hop crap. I’m not amused. They wasted millions on Howard Stern and cut off a good channel. Total bullshit.

ronct | 11/30/2008, 7:44 pm EST

I will be ending my subscription as well when it expires this winter. I can’t stand all the talking. I may as well listen to the regular radio for free. Siruis seems to be more for non-thinkers and airheads.

Gunnar | 12/1/2008, 2:27 pm EST

Having listened to Sirius channel 62, classic country, for a number of years, I cannot say how disgusted I am with the new music lineup. It sux

Flowers | 12/2/2008, 12:26 pm EST

Once my XM expires in the spring, I will not be renewing my 3 accounts. Fine Tuning was the absolute best channel on XM and they substituted a movie soundtrack channel? What genius thinks more people want to hear that crap? XM suggests SPA as an alternate to Fine Tuning? Well all I have to say about that is “fire up the aroma therapy candle and prepare to snooze!”

YesFanDon | 12/4/2008, 10:28 am EST

I too have been incredibly unhappy with my XM since they took Fine Tuning off the air. I have listened to Fine Tuning virtually all day long 5 days a week for several years. When the occasional objectionable song came along, I’d pop over to Deep Tracks. As another writer said, there is no substitute for Fine Tuning. For example, where do I find the California Guitar Trio? XM has now been ruined the way that FM was ruined in the late 70s.

MarConey | 12/8/2008, 7:39 pm EST

I too am quite displeased with what’s happened to ex-M/getSirius. I was familiar with XM’s fare thanks to its availability via DirecTV, and with Sirius’ selections because that service came pre-installed when my employer gave me a new work truck earlier this year. So, I had fair chance for almost a year to sample the offerings of both services, and without a doubt, XM’s fare was superior, with XM’s Fine Tuning the hands-down winner; Sirius having nothing even coming close. So when my old auto lease was up in September and I leased a new car, I spent $500 cash out of pocket to have installed the XM satellite radio module, for the specific reason of being able to listen to Fine Tuning. Imagine my shock when I got into my car late November and there was no more Fine Tuning on channel 76; that preset was automatically re-programmed to channel 72, “The Spa”. FAH! Not even close! Can I get my $500 back? Siriously! We can’t have Fine Tuning, but we now have a channel programmed by Eminem…WOW-WEE!!!…and XM’s Operations Manager, Scott Goldstein says of their new line-up: “The breadth and quality of the new programming lineups make it clear that everything worth listening to is now on SIRIUS XM”. Un-be-leavable.

PISSED OFF | 12/11/2008, 6:49 pm EST

I’ve been hot on 66 RAW for the past 5 yrs., and know i have to listen to that Shady Junk, what is going to be next. BRING BACK MIZZ KITTI

ArtR | 12/12/2008, 12:09 pm EST

FINE TUNING in my opinion, is the definition of what satellite radio is about, truly eclectic, beyond borders and compartmentalized ’styles’. Do we really need 21 Rock channels plus another 15 Pop channels. Yes Pop & Rock by definition are ‘Popular’, have large audiences, readily available and deserve some channels. However, for a unique radio service, as XM truly was, not to allocate 1 or 2 channels to something not available anywhere else, is just plain dumb. Channels like FINE TUNING and BEYOND JAZZ are worth the price of admission, 36 variations of what is readily available anywhere, isn’t.

TokieGrl | 12/23/2008, 11:24 am EST

I want my XM back! I’m now stuck with a 3 year subscription to lousy programming. If they don’t have the money to hire capable staff they should dump Stern. I can’t believe he brings in any decent money.

Anonymous | 1/19/2009, 3:46 am EST

I’ve had and loved Sirius for 3 years now and the merger has ruined it. What the programmers seem to be failing to realize is that Sirus and XM were DIFFERENT and thus had differnet followings. By trying to combine the content of both stations within the same channels, they just succeeded in ticking off EVERYBODY!

gtodd | 1/26/2009, 7:49 pm EST

XM was great. Now with Sirius and their obnoxious djs, I might as well listen to fm. Dusty Streets needs to cut the inane chatter and just play music. MP3 might be the way to go.

Merlin | 2/10/2009, 11:45 pm EST

The idiots who orchestrated this merger and the officials that “rubber stamped” their approval should all be put in a boat, shoved out to sea, and sunk. I mean really, what type of moron pays that type of money to a mediocre talent like Howard Stern and then believe the venture can survive financially. XM was a far superior entity, with better programming and none of those inane DJ’s who think we tune to the stations to hear them instead of the music. I love satellite radio, but clearly the intelligence just isn’t there at the management level. Price hikes, programming dropping to a kindergarten level, bankruptcy filings, clearly the idiots are failing at running the asylum. My subscription will be canceled shortly as well.

Peter | 2/13/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Like most posts here, I was disapointed by the merger. To the point I cancelled my service.
The only reason I subscribed to Siruis was for the dedicated Blues Channel. They dropped the Sirius Blues in favor of XM’s Bluesville. I cancelled the day after the main DJ on there Bill Wax played 20 versions of the same song back to back to demonstrate the differences. I mean 1 or 2 versions, but 20!! I too like some had the hard sell trying to get me to stay, even an offer of 6 months free, but I refused. Oh well I guess its back to plugging in my Ipod. At least that has a selection that I like and is not repeated 20 times over.

Lindsey in Redwood City CA | 3/1/2009, 6:07 pm EST

As an XM subscriber since 2004, I’ve been spending the past couple of months suffering from the significant degradation of both playlist depth and music choice selection quality caused by the sirius merger. I have also been trying to adapt to the merger. I’m still trying. I have also spent this time scratching my head, trying to figure out what the sirius subscribers saw in sirius music. Reading a discussion thread at Yahoo about what was a pending sirius XM bankruptcy cleared it up for me. I read numerous posts from Sirius subscribers fiercely loyal to Howard Stern. They stated that they were in it only for Stern, that they could cancel if Stern were dropped. Now it makes sense. The sirius subscribers had to be in it for something – it certainly couldn’t have been for sirius’s vastly inferior music programming. Stupid concepts, weak genres, lazy execution, excessive DJ chatter, grossly inefficient and wasteful use of 20 rock channels compared to what XM used to do with 15. And the thing of it is that sirius made it a point to keep this Howard Stern exclusive to the sirius bands. I can think of at least ten merger rock channels that I really, really wished sirius had also kept exclusive to the siruis channels and left the XM rock channel line-up alone.

roadrunner | 3/11/2009, 5:11 am EST

sirius not all that bad, as it did expand XM’s horizon somewhat. love the additional rock channels, long live Little Steven and the Underground Garage!

HOWARD forever | 4/12/2009, 3:57 pm EST

Sirius IS Howard Stern!!! You narrow minded people who think he is the only one being paid big bucks are mistaken! At least HE is worth it. Tune in..you’ll see. Artie, Fred, Bah Bah Booey & Robin make for a great 5 hour show. Well worth it!!!!!!!!

James | 7/26/2009, 8:56 pm EST

How can we all petition to get Fine Tuning back on the Satellite. It was the absolute best channel by far. Think about it: Very Eclectic, merging sounds, cultures and formats on one channel. Songs and artists merged by key with a smattering of smart interviews. That is truly genius programming. An incredible and talented programmer is lost due to the muck of the bottom line? What bottom line?

Perrin | 7/27/2009, 10:25 pm EST

I loved Fine Tuning, too, and no other show comes close to its quality. Seriously doubt that we’ll renew.
