Ryan Adams Tosses Barbs at The Killers, R.E.M.

Perhaps touring with Oasis has taught Ryan Adams a thing or two about starting a rock feud. In an interview with The Guardian, Adams responded to the question “What’s the frequency, Kenneth?” with an assault on R.E.M. “I mean, seriously, who is Kenneth? The answer should be, ‘Hey Michael [Stipe], what would happen if you sat down and actually thought this shit out for 10 minutes?,’” Adams said. “I mean, no offense but there’s a slight difference between Monster and Fables Of The Reconstruction and we all know what that is; it’s a level of giving a fuck. $80m will do that to anyone who has a credit card and access to a Barney’s.” Perhaps Adams would be better served checking Wikipedia to find out whom Kenneth was. Next, Adams took aim at the Killers. “Fame is an unnatural construct and those who go in search of it are the least likely to find it. I mean, really, does anyone want to sit through a show by the Killers?” Adams says. No word whether Adams also misconstrues the Killers’ “Human” chorus lyrics as “dancer” or “denser.”

what a cock

Simple Math | 11/19/2008, 5:14 pm EST

Ryan Adams=monstrous douchebag

Rob J. | 11/19/2008, 5:17 pm EST

Ripping on a song that is 14 years old… how timely!

(and the Kenneth story is pretty common knowledge. What a cock indeed.)

Denton | 11/19/2008, 5:21 pm EST

Ryan Adams is an overrated, egotistical hack. Sure, R.E.M. haven’t really mattered in about 12 years, but at least they mattered at one time. Adams will be forgotten the minute after he overdoses, because he has nothing. No sound, nothing to say, nothing compelling, nothing original.

Chuck | 11/19/2008, 5:30 pm EST

If he cared enough about R.E.M., he would be knowledgeable about both Kenneth and the frequency.

Question to Adams: How often is it that Stipe’s lyrics actually make sense? Isn’t that part of what made their early work so different?

Read the actual interview | 11/19/2008, 8:48 pm EST

dummies. It’s definitely got a tongue in cheek vibe. Relax about your crappy REM.

Jere | 11/19/2008, 9:13 pm EST

Oh, THERE’S the Ryan Adams I love…

Supernatural_Fly | 11/19/2008, 9:53 pm EST

Oasis sucks dick, first off, “Wonderwall” seriously? that’s the best song you can write? and you were on drugs? wow you suck!
Ryan Adams, how come people have actually heard of R.E.M. and buy their records and noone knows who the fuck you are, and they DONT CARE! so go suck Noel’s dick and keep making these stupid derogatory comments

schultz | 11/19/2008, 10:37 pm EST

I agree with Simple Math – Adams=Douchebag. only egotistical dipshits rip on other bands or songs (12 years too late).

Total irrelevant ass!

hokeycoke | 11/19/2008, 10:55 pm EST

ryan adams is back!!!!

Errett | 11/19/2008, 11:45 pm EST

Gotta say, big ryan fan, but here is the lowdown on kenneth. once upon a time, i dont really know when, but tom brokaw was doing a live news report out on some street or something and a mentally deranged man sprinted up behind him and started attacking him on live TV screaming “What’s the frequency kenneth!? Whats the frequency Kenneth!?”
this is true, and it seems to follow that all of my favorite musicians love to speak when they should shut up.

Kenneth | 11/20/2008, 2:05 am EST

Erret, you have it all wrong. The newsman in question was Dan Rather and he was assaulted by 2 men in suits who repeatedly asked him “What’s the frequency, Kenneth?” It wasn’t captured on live television.
On a further note, who gives an f what Ryan Adams thinks. His music is lightweight and maybe he ought to think about how he’s going to pay back the $ he stole from Courtney.

matt in farmers branch | 11/20/2008, 9:22 am EST

Well i don’t care much for his comment about The Killers… They make great music, different from Ryan Adam’s music, but still great music.

mcache | 11/20/2008, 12:07 pm EST

I would never pay money to see a Killers show but I would most definitely pay money to watch Ryan Adams fall off of a stage and break both of his arms. Wait a minute… I already did that.

libertine | 11/20/2008, 1:36 pm EST

genius excuses cruelty..go Ryan(dylan ) adams

braynden phstype | 11/20/2008, 2:05 pm EST

making headlines with comments instead of music is probably why no one buys his records or sees his shows, unless he is opening up for a has been band – still no one watches the opening band

Jewgravy | 11/20/2008, 5:29 pm EST

Another fact Mr Adams failed to check = REM were offered the $80 mil re-sign contract with Warner AFTER “Monster” was released. That LP came out in ‘94…and REM re-UPpped (pun intended) their contract in ‘96.

that comment from Libertine makes no sense. Ryan Adams is a very poor man’s Paul Simon on watered down pablum like “New York” (beyond cliche) and doesn’t even sniff Dylan’s jockstrap. We can assume, that a) you think you are a “libertine” with no moral compass, not the shitty band that Pete Doherty “fronted”, in which case, haha, you are a douchebag, or b) you are a fan of the shitty band that Pete Doherty fronted, or c) you are a fan of Pete Doherty. Good luck extracting your head from your ass. Genius does not excuse cruelty. Genius is recognized, lauded, applauded, and revered. Ryan Adams is none of those things.

Leanie | 11/20/2008, 6:49 pm EST

Ryan Adams is way off base.
REM and the Killers are both fantastic bands whose personalities and musical talents are loved and admired by their millions of fans as well as other musicians. Success has come natural for them and it is well deserved.
Poor Mr. Adams…a jealous little man.

wow | 11/21/2008, 12:46 am EST

these comments are so thoughtful…not..

adams is a hair’s breadth away from being redundant himself and way too proud of his particular talents…but writes and rocks plenty…just needs to stop being a brat.

j | 11/21/2008, 4:55 pm EST

Hey, I like Ryan Adams. Although I must admit I though his songs were better before he dropped the “B” from the start of his first name.

Mike/Houston,TX. | 11/21/2008, 5:41 pm EST

I like RYAN ADAMS. I’m well over R.E.M. and their rehashed “Accelerate” didn’t reel me back into the muse I once had for that band, after three lackluster albums. Michael Stipe has taken aim and popped off his mouth[in his music] more often than not at whatever he chooses, for better or worse. RYAN ADAMS can be as arrogant as he pleases, cos it’s his turn! I agree with him.

Oh, please. | 11/22/2008, 1:12 pm EST

Ryan Adams has released about two decent albums in the last five years, and at least six immediately forgettable ones. He’ll NEVER put out anything as good as even a middling R.E.M. album. As far as making fun of the Killers, isn’t that like Palin making fun of Bush? They are both acts that will never be anything other than fair to good. Kind of the Foghat and Grand Junction Railroads of their time.

gablessurf | 12/2/2008, 5:32 pm EST

Is it just me or does Ryan Adams look like the guy who won Project Runway last year? He was “fierce”, remember?

Rachel | 1/5/2009, 6:09 pm EST

Screw that guy! I love the Killers.

McObama | 1/15/2009, 12:20 pm EST

ryan being ryan, he’s the kanye of alt country.

cRAIG | 1/15/2009, 5:19 pm EST

there is absolutely nothing great about the Killers…

Blackberry | 1/16/2009, 6:15 pm EST

sorry, for a min there i thought someone said the killers had personalities that millions adored?!?!?!?!? huh? they have no personality! and they make for the most dull interviews within music! jeez!

b.cos | 1/18/2009, 8:45 pm EST

killers,killers ,mediocre comes to mind.

What? | 3/11/2009, 5:37 pm EST

Sorry, call me lame, but who the f is Ryan Adams?

toterola451 | 3/12/2009, 10:25 am EST

Jealous, much?

Fox Adams | 3/12/2009, 9:59 pm EST

I’m going to love writing this post.REM was great. The killers are great, and Ryan Adams is three times as talented in three different ways as any member of either band. Pick your much and much more music sides, goons… But Adams doesn’t much care if he sells the records. He knows he’s better, there’s no comparison.

Kali | 3/16/2009, 4:11 am EST

wow all i see is a whole bunch of who gives a fuck……So what. Get over it you bucnh of emos

Fox Adams | 3/23/2009, 3:48 am EST

Why’d you waste your precious time if who gives a fuck kali?

cardinology | 3/26/2009, 12:25 pm EST

you dont know fuck ryan adams is great listen to easy tiger or any album he made

miser | 5/24/2009, 6:44 pm EST

pretty funny how the only thing even worth commenting on here is the fact that someone posted “Grand Junction Railroad” as a way of trying to make them look educated by throwing classic rock artists around, too bad the name of the band was “Grand Funk Railroad” and in their peak, they sold more albums than both the Killers and Ryan Adams together.

Whackman | 8/10/2009, 6:06 am EST

Ryan’s comments are right on! His unreleased material (check out Suicide Handbook, for starters) kicks the shit out of pretty much anything REM or The Killers have released, never mind his ‘official releases’, such as Heartbreaker, Gold, Jacksonville City Nights, Cold Roses, Easy Tiger or Cardinology. How many REM or Killer’s songs get covered by the bands that cover RA’s songs? Enough said, end of argument!!

Oh yeah; Courtney Love is a messed up, lying sack of sh*t.

Rolling Stoned | 9/8/2009, 10:15 am EST

Who the fuck is Ryan Adam’s, when I first heard about this I thought it was mispelled :P and thought it was Bryan Adams, never heard of Ryan Adams!

Obviously he is gelous of The Killers success in the 5 years they have been about, and he is name dropping, come back when you have sold 17,000,000 albums Adams!

Maybe The Killers are not popular in America, but really in America you have The Jonas Brothers – Lol, The Killers are doing great over in Britain and we love them, all the good music comes from Britain, Beatles, Queen, Led Zep, now we have embraced and braught the world The Killers and King of Leon who were abandoned by America, lets see who the world remembers more in 20-30 years, The Killers or Ryan Adams.

Just for the Record I have nothing againt the US, good day.
