Brandon Flowers Wound Up Over Misquoting of Killers’ “Human”

11/19/08, 9:05 am EST

The Killers‘ Brandon Flowers continues to be frustrated by fans being frustrated with the lyrics to the chorus of his new single “Human.” “Are we human, or are we dancer,” Flowers sings, imploring that the ambiguous word is the grammatically-incorrect “dancer” and not “denser.” “That sucks a bit. I don’t like, ‘Are we denser?’ as an alternative,” Flowers said. “I really care what people think but people don’t seem to understand ‘Human.’ They think it’s nonsense. But I was aching over those lyrics for a very long time to get them right.” Part of that time aching was evidently spent reading books by Hunter S. Thompson, as Flowers himself has admitted the “dancer” line was inspired by the former Rolling Stone contributor. “It’s taken from a quote by [author Hunter S.] Thompson,” Flowers admitted last month when the confusion began. “‘We’re raising a generation of dancers,’ and I took it and ran. I guess it bothers people that it’s not grammatically correct, but I think I’m allowed to do whatever I want.” The Killers’ Day & Age is set to befuddle listeners with its lyrics on November 24th.

Its still a great song

Adam | 11/19/2008, 9:41 am EST

I agree, musically and lyrically this is a great song. I think they’re back to their original approach to music… I didn’t care for Hot Fuss that much and I hated Sam’s Town and I’ve seen them live twice and thought they were “ok”… I don’t know I guess I just think that they have a lot of potential.

waytagojoe | 11/19/2008, 1:04 pm EST

This song is great. . . it’s perfectly addictive after a few plays. Also, with the explanation it is a really interesting song. Lyrically, I think it reminds me of a Paul Simon song like “Slip Sliding Away” sometimes. It just kind of has that feel.

jessica loves the killers | 11/19/2008, 2:50 pm EST

The Killers ROCK!!!

peadinkle | 11/19/2008, 3:23 pm EST

the song sucks! I love the Killers. They are a great band. but I hate thissong. The problem may be that Flowers spent too much time aching over the lyrics, tried too hard and didn’t trust somethng more spontaneous. I don’t care if it’s not grammatically correct. And I like the idea of ‘dancer’ as an indirect quote from Thompson. But the result – wimpy, overwrought lyricism.

.... | 11/19/2008, 3:48 pm EST

song of the year

Cloudman | 11/19/2008, 4:03 pm EST

I hate this fucking song. At least it’s not When You Were Young, though.

killtheindustry | 11/19/2008, 4:05 pm EST

Ahhh …little Brandon found some OMD records at the thrift shop… what a pathetic piece of drivel that song is. Another potential mighty band reduced to putting out radio pablum.

GNRBUCKEYE | 11/19/2008, 4:33 pm EST

This song sucks anyways. I have little hope for the new album. Anything is better than Sam’s Town though.

April | 11/19/2008, 4:36 pm EST

Okay, come on guys. The Killers are fucking amazing. Some ppl want to believe they aren’t good just cuz they’re different. It’s an amazing and beautiful song. Don’t worry Brandon, you did great.

Steve | 11/19/2008, 5:55 pm EST

This is a fantastic song and i cant wait to listen to the new album. Hot Fuss was brilliant so was Sam’s Town and im pretty sure this Day and Age will be too.:-D

James | 11/19/2008, 5:59 pm EST

Great song The Killers are immense!!!!!!!

shemp | 11/19/2008, 6:56 pm EST

slow news day, huh, now that TRL is over?

Geoff | 11/19/2008, 7:03 pm EST

I don’t see why ‘dancer’ is grammatically incorrect. It just suggests that dancer is another species, like human. I don’t see anyone complaining that he says ‘are we human’ and not ‘are we humans’ – if you interpret dancer as an adjective and not a noun, there is nothing wrong with his grammar.

Dvnovert | 11/19/2008, 9:48 pm EST

Get a sense of Wit people. This song is great, that line is fun.
I don’t want to help you critics with your over-thinking, Imagine “dancer” as a type of species. I am human. I am dancer.
It’s that simple, and that much of a point.
Relax, enjoy!

saad | 11/19/2008, 11:27 pm EST

yeah the lyrics are a bit odd, but i mean millions of songs have odd lyrics, so it’s no biggie

Solo | 11/20/2008, 1:40 am EST

We adore The Killers and our all time fave from them has to be Sam’s Town. When We Were Young is awesome stuff; with the violin and Maryam playing.Just keep on going: You Rock.

Kaidt | 11/20/2008, 9:48 am EST

the killers are returning more to where they started from with Hot Fuss with this track….i actually liked the Sam’s Town message and the whole sound of it more though….i think the killers’ tracks have solid lyrics in general…but they haven’t reached their full potential musically yet….

human | 11/20/2008, 9:52 am EST

In this economy, who the hell has time to sit around and think about this?

The Killer is Me | 11/20/2008, 12:49 pm EST

Awesome song.

Boy, the internet sure does bring out a bunch of pessimists, naysayers, and otherwise negative distractors…much like the county fair brings out the dregs..

It is art, no rules required. Ironic how the seemingly uneducated debate about grammer, rule, and meaning.

Awesome album.

Stop hiding behind your computer with your negative jabs and find a purposeful life everyone. I include the Guns n Roses and Mettalica distractors here too.

And as to not cause confusion, if you don’t care for the song or album fine, it’s the faulty assumptions, character attacking, and contemptuous remarks that are ignorant.

And one more thing, its just a song (or music).

The Killer is Dumb | 11/20/2008, 1:38 pm EST

The Killer is Me needs to go back to grammar school.

It’s ‘detractors’, not distracters.

Detractor: to take away a part, as from quality, value, or reputation.

Distracter: a person or thing that distracts the attention.

Also, proper spelling would be grammar.

How do you not know these things? Gradating eight grade should equip you to know and properly use these words and principles, regardless of the quality of school. You are a failure as an educated human being.

Because you are unable to properly express yourself, your opinion is meaningless.

brianorlando | 11/20/2008, 2:22 pm EST

the music is good….the lyrics suck hard….

and thats a big part of the song brandon…..

i cant believe you guys are releaseing this crap

leanie | 11/20/2008, 2:37 pm EST

the killers=amazing. all of it.

The Killer is Me | 11/20/2008, 3:33 pm EST

Funny how “the killer is dumb” calls attention to my choice of words and grammer, which he says would be spelling too, yet he is misspelling it! (distracter) haha

And what is “gradating eight grade”? – You must mean graduating eighth grade, but missed that one too.

I picked the word I wanted to use, much like The Killers picked the word “Dancer”

dis⋅trac⋅tor  /dɪˌstræktər/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [di-strak-ter] Show IPA Pronunciation

–noun 1. a person or thing that distracts the attention.
2. an incorrect choice among multiple-choice answers on a test.

Detractor is a good word too to describe it I suppose…so yes, these posters are often distracting and detracting.

Again, while my choice of terminology is different, the spelling of which you require to revisit.

You are a clear example of which I was referring. Must we go to the lowest common denominator of using (in your case mild) insult to offer counterpoint?

I do appreciate you recognizing me as an educated human being.

Mandela | 11/20/2008, 3:42 pm EST

Ehhh-not bad, like a 2 1/2 or 3 out of five

Mandela | 11/20/2008, 3:43 pm EST

When we were young was catchery, hopefully the album as a whole will be better.

The Killer is Me | 11/20/2008, 3:49 pm EST

I do stand a bit corrected…went back and found there are 2 variants on distractor/er. I guess we are both correct there.

Guess an education will teach you to confirm your assumptions.

Great job Killers! Love the new album and songs. The performance on Saturday Night Live several weeks ago was awesome too! Keep the music fresh.

Peace!

liothegreat | 11/20/2008, 4:07 pm EST

On the album it kinda sounds like denser, but when The Killers were on SNL you could really tell it was dancer, I wonder if they were told to enunciate more.

Rictor | 11/20/2008, 4:54 pm EST

I wait tables at the Hard Rock in Vegas and these guys come in all the time. I should ask them if I’m a dancer or a human. They’ll probably say I’m a waiter. LOL

Americans can’t spell to save their lives!!

em | 11/20/2008, 6:54 pm EST

Bottom line…Human is a great song. The Killers are on target for another successful album with Day and Age.
So excited!

Brenda | 11/23/2008, 12:50 am EST

Dancer, denser….who cares? This is an AMAZING song…just ask my 4th graders! Thank you The Killers. I am so looking forward to buying the album on the 24th and just in time for my birthday.

Brenda | 11/23/2008, 12:52 am EST

Thanks Rictor for making me laugh!!!!

Stoo | 11/23/2008, 4:58 pm EST

Wow, a lot of people are writing this song off for bad lyrics. I’d say these are some of the most thought provoking lyrics I’ve heard in a long time. I just looked for song meanings on Google and all the interpretations blew me away. I think it’s an awesome song!

killerfan | 11/24/2008, 1:11 pm EST

Great song for sure, I like all the killers original songs.

Marcus | 11/26/2008, 2:46 pm EST

One of the best lines in a track … good song, perfect Killers sound … ;-)

petra | 11/27/2008, 7:53 pm EST

Well for sure that this song the lyrics let me search for the deeper meanings. because I wanted to know.
And if a song can bring so much discussion just because of the word “dancer”
I think its great!

And yes..I like the song very much

Biggles | 12/1/2008, 8:53 am EST

The song is terrible, the lyrics are laughable.

The Killers still shift records, why? Who actually likes this awful, awful band?

Killlers( over-fifty )fan | 12/2/2008, 5:40 am EST

Absolutely addictive song regardless of all the discussion…just as great album!

Sindri | 12/2/2008, 4:56 pm EST

An amazing group. Brandon is proving himself to be a top class front man with incredible vocals (just listen to his duet with Lou Reed, Tranquilize, with all those half notes and what have you). He also has a great sense for music in a truly mature way, as we can see on Sawdust where his choice of co-op is Lou Reed and his choice of cover song is one by Mark Knopfler. I truly believe that Brandon and the other killers are on a great track, making great music and I cant wait for them to get older, more mature and see them develop. In my mind the Killers and Kings of Leon are the most presentable “new” (young) bands in the US.

Kev | 12/4/2008, 8:48 am EST

The best band in the world, with the best front man in the world. Perfection.

Cecilia | 12/5/2008, 8:33 am EST

Long live the Killers!

Chrissy | 12/7/2008, 5:10 am EST

I like this song. It’s entertaining AND makes me think about deeper meaning. I dont care about the grammar. I DO however, think that people interpreting “dancer” as “denser” are themselves dense.

I like how it makes me think and not enough popular songs do that these days.

Person | 12/7/2008, 5:26 am EST

Is this song about individuality?
Sorry if its mentioned before. But still i think its my place to ask.

Chrissy | 12/7/2008, 5:33 am EST

I like this song. It makes me think. Not enough songs do that these days. I dont care about the grammar, however, i am annoyed at those who think its denser. There are many signs pointing to dancer. Its not stupid think about what a dancer is and you might get it!

wtfpeople | 12/10/2008, 7:10 am EST

the only thing this song makes me “think” about is how the hell can people listen to this garbage. this band isnt even trying anymore. stop making the radio play this shit, your music sucks, your lyrics suck, your songwriting sucks.

pretty much just take your money and leave us the fuck alone. im so sick of this annoying bullshit.

wtfpeople | 12/10/2008, 7:10 am EST

Johanna | 12/11/2008, 9:50 am EST

Well, the quote doesn’t actually seem to exist, though. So that’s a bit of a flaw. And I really don’t know if it would have changed anything to put an “s” on the end, and ryme it with “answers” instead. This is really quite irritating, especially because the song is so catchy!

YepYep | 12/15/2008, 4:47 am EST

I still think it sounds better as denser. The song is much deeper with denser instead of dancer. But who cares right????!!!!!????…….

Chickabee | 12/15/2008, 7:37 pm EST

If it upsets people so much, just think of the correct lyrics with different punctuation, it’s not that hard, surely?
“Are we human, or are we, Dancer?”
:are we human, or do we simply exist as entities? – addressed to ‘Dancer’ – to anyone listening to the song. Easy peasy. DO try to keep up, denser munchkins!

Dancer | 12/20/2008, 6:57 am EST

A dancer is a PUPPET. Review the lyrics and you will get it.

Cheyenne | 12/24/2008, 12:57 pm EST

Brandon worked hard on those lyrics, and to him, even though the one line is not gramatically correct, it still makes sense. He is right in saying that he is allowed to do whatever he wants because they are his lyrics, and he was the one that worked on them, and ached over them, and the people who have put comments on here bashing The Killers are obviously just jealous that they can’t write such good music and lyrics as them.

Herunar | 12/29/2008, 7:04 am EST

“even though the one line is not gramatically correct, it still makes sense.” That’s like a teacher telling a first-grader, “That’s not correct, but it’s just a little bit off.” If you can’t write grammatically correct lyrics, go back to school.

insider | 1/1/2009, 10:11 pm EST

Now into which CATEGORY shall we place each of the above commenters, and into which BOX shall we place him? Hmmmmm…..Human? Dancer? Whiner? Complainer? Child? OK, now do you get it? Brandon’s saying “WHAT category have we become?” It’s as simple as that!….(And, by the way, it IS “dancer”, as the writer of the lyrics says himself.) Have you ever questioned Bob Dylan’s lyrics? or Shakespeare’s prose? That would be artistic blasphemy, so accept it, appreciate it, and move on. There is such a thing as “artistic license”. To me, it’s a great piece of music, lyrically and otherwise. It rose to great heights for a reason. For those “complaining”, try to contemplate the words “I wanna hold your hand” and “she loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah”, and “she’s a brick house”….Really deep, huh? Yes, great also, in their own way (and I love those, too) but not lyrically!…..so, Music is Music—-it is what it is—-an individual’s expression of that which is in his OWN heart…all songs different , with different meanings to everyone, but all that matters is the meaning of a song TO THE WRITER. It’s what flows out of HIS heart, and his heart alone. He writes it in solitude, in a moment of inspiration, and agonizes over the words expressing what’s inside, and sometimes it IS difficult to put into words. And to me, it only matters that Brandon Flowers likes it and I like it. And it seems at least the two of us understand it. Life must be tough for those without intellect, understanding, concern, and passion. May God bless Brandon Flowers and I, for one, am thankful for his amazing talent. Brandon, you need not answer to anyone but yourself. The rest of us?….well, we’re on our knees looking for the answer…….

the Professor | 1/1/2009, 10:40 pm EST

WOW, well said, INSIDER!…….and by the way, the lyrics are NOT grammatically incorrect, to you previous posters! The lyrics are fine, and I should know (that’s a secret). The writer is saying, “Are we Humans or are we Puppets?”, or “Are we A Human or are we A Puppet?”, or “Are we HUMAN or are we PUPPET?” It’s the EXACT same grammar as “Are we ‘Human’ or are we ‘Dancer’”….as long as it’s the name of a CLASS or category, as INSIDER says, it’s correct! So, those saying grammatically incorrect, you stand corrected. Rest easy, Brandon.

Marcus | 1/8/2009, 7:38 pm EST

Look, it matters precisely because you think that it doesn’t. Those of us that speak proper English are sick and tired of alternative grammar and made up words… “Aiight” is not a real word, and “Aks” is not an acceptable alternative to “Ask”. It also remains the case that nouns must “agree” with the person, in this case, first-person-plural. “Dancer” isn’t a cool alternative or arty rendition because IT MAKES NO SENSE, however you try to read it. It’s plain ignorant, bad grammar – even if you get the gist… It’s not good enough. PERIOD.

Colin Baldwin | 1/12/2009, 11:16 am EST

Never mind the lyrics, I still think the song is by Chris de Burgh when it comes on the radio until the human/dancer conundrum reminds me…

jonesy | 1/15/2009, 8:17 pm EST

my look on the lyrics are that we are being reminded that onceapon a time before the industrial revolution/ mass production/ripping poor countries off for profit/consumerism etc we all lived and survived on our feelings and instincts, our individuality, feelings and thoughts are slowly being erroded so we all dance to the same tune.ie control… some people feel this and want to escape the system and find themselves- so are you human? or do you dance to the mans tune….i think we are now all dancer.

hot fusss | 1/20/2009, 12:24 pm EST

sam’s town and day & age are such a disappointment compared to hot fuss. what happened to them after hot fuss?

WaggaWagga | 1/21/2009, 9:51 am EST

Dreadful song.

hmaz | 1/23/2009, 10:52 am EST

to all of you who don’t like the killers, hate the lyrics and don’t think a person is pefectly entitled to write and sing whatever they’d like, go post somewhere else. and take your smarmy sucky comments with you…please

Dan | 1/31/2009, 2:39 am EST

First off, “Are we Human, or are we Dancer?” is not grammatically incorrect. It’s correct if “Dancer” meant as a race or species.

That said, I don’t understand why on earth he chose to use the word “Dancer” because it just doesn’t fit in right. I mean “Puppets” wouldn’t have rhymed, but it might have made better sense. I mean, use anything but a really out-of-place word like Dancer.

And for all of you who think the lyrics were great and have your own take on why “dancer” is appropriate in this song, would you care to explain to me how it gels with “My sign is vital, my hands are cold”??

I think Brandon just came up with these lyrics when he happened to be taking a dump, in a moment where his intellect was clouded with you know what.

Overall, a catchy tune, but a lousy song. Your 4th graders can make a better song.

Laura | 1/31/2009, 11:46 am EST

When I first listened to Human, I really wanted to understand what he was saying. As a fan of the The Killers, like any fan of a great band, you may not “get it” right away, but you keep listening and when you “get it” it’s because you want to. I knew almost right away he was asking the question “are we dancer?” That’s what’s so intoxicating about Brandon Flowers, he says what he feels and what’s on his mind, it’s doesn’t matter if it doesn’t make perfect sense, he just wants you to hear what he’s thinking. He’s beautiful because he has a passion for what he does, he sings from the heart and wants his fans to be apart of it with him.

Larny | 2/1/2009, 1:16 pm EST

Oh, come on, guys. No wonder Brandon is pissed at the controversy concerning the lyrics he agonised over. I am too. It’s DANCER, and like many others, I totally get it. Only the DENSER of the species think otherwise. How ironic, eh? The lyrics speak volumes for the intelligence of this man – he’s a literary genius. The Killers always write profound songs that you have to delve into and interpret. If you want mundane, simple lyrics that sing your life, I suggest you stop listening to the Killers and check out someone like James Blunt instead. The real question we should all ask ourselves is, are we human, or are we dancer? Choice is yours…

Dave | 2/14/2009, 11:53 pm EST

They make beautiful music.

Brandon Flowers is a genius.

The Killers are simply the best band in the world, but of course, without Flowers, the Killers are nothing.

kez | 3/5/2009, 6:33 pm EST

i love the song human! the best song brandon has written i think! saw them in nottingham they were fantastic! dont know what all the fuss is about i think they are great lyrics, it sounds great when they sing it live!

baby | 3/7/2009, 12:41 pm EST

a lot of funny human and dancer fighting for killers

???????? | 3/14/2009, 12:03 am EST

man i love this song i dont think anythings wrong with this song and even if there was so wat its thiere song and ya he can do what ever he wants.you rock the killers!!!!!!!!

Andy | 4/29/2009, 12:13 pm EST

This song is true piss and should be taken off the radio.

Applecore Mortimor | 5/1/2009, 12:32 pm EST

The fact that he thinks he is so above grammar shows how much of a douche-bag he truly is..

Lewis | 7/17/2009, 2:05 pm EST

I thought for sure it was DANZA. Flowers is asking us if we are HUMAN and therefore real or are we DANZA and therefore fictitious like Tony Danza’s character “Tony” in “Who’s the Boss” and countless other characters in awful, unrealistic network television programs.

. | 7/30/2009, 5:22 pm EST

Who cares about the lyrics? Whatever it is, its still a really great song.

linguist | 8/17/2009, 6:26 am EST

guys i think it could be grammatically correct

we refer to a ‘human’ in the singular and several ‘humans’ in the plural. however, when we refer to the race of humanity, it takes on the singular, as it is a single referent…as in ‘we are human’ meaning we belong to the human race.
so in effect you can refer to one dancer and many dancers, but you can also refer to the ‘dancer race’ in the singular. as in the possible world of us all belonging to either the human race or the dancer race…
it sounds funny due to it’s lack of use but makes grammatical sense.

‘are we human, or are we dancer?’

T-man456 | 9/23/2009, 10:44 pm EST

the killers are an awsome band and the song is two

wtf | 9/23/2009, 10:45 pm EST

take it easy it is just a song, a good one two
