Springsteen’s “Working on a Dream” Confirmed: New Album Due January 27th

11/17/08, 10:25 am EST

The rumors were true: Columbia Records has confirmed that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s Working on a Dream will be released on January 27, 2009. The 12-track LP — Bruce’s 24th — was produced and mixed by Brendan O’Brien, who last helmed the band’s 2007 Magic.

“Towards the end of recording Magic, excited by the return to pop production sounds, I continued writing,” Springsteen says in a statement. “When my friend producer Brendan O’Brien heard the new songs, he said, ‘Let’s keep going.’ Over the course of the next year, that’s just what we did, recording with the E Street Band during the breaks on last year’s tour. I hope Working on a Dream has caught the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we’ve ever done. All the songs were written quickly, we usually used one of our first few takes, and we all had a blast making this one from beginning to end.”

The album features two bonus tracks: “The Wrestler” and “A Night with the Jersey Devil.” As promised, the NFL premiered a bit of the title track during last night’s Cowboys-Redskins half-time (see above). Keep reading for the full track list:

1. “Outlaw Pete”
2. “My Lucky Day”
3. “Working on a Dream”
4. “Queen of the Supermarket”
5. “What Love Can Do”
6. “This Life”
7. “Good Eye”
8. “Tomorrow Never Knows”
9. “Life Itself”
10. “Kingdom of Days”
11. “Surprise, Surprise”
12. “The Last Carnival”

Tomorrow Never Knows? A Beatles cover??

yeah baby!!!!

Mazzy | 11/17/2008, 3:25 pm EST

How can a new released album contain Bonus Tracks if they are on the initial release then they are part of the album. If an album is reissued at a later date with tracks not on the original release, then yes they would be bonus tracks.

Please explain!

Bruce rules!

Oh man… if Tomorrow Never Knows is indeed a cover of The Beatles song… I think I might explode with joy!

matt | 11/17/2008, 4:25 pm EST

Awesome news. Magic was a brilliant album, and I can’t wait to hear these songs.

Leonardo Peixoto | 11/17/2008, 4:37 pm EST

Axl Rose and Bruce Springsteen are back…..finally good music…

Wasn’t super enthused by the sleepy sounding “Workin on a Dream”

Super enthused about stadiums in North America next summer though.

harpo | 11/17/2008, 5:07 pm EST

Interesting how Springsteen mentioned these songs were written quickly…word is they were written in this fashion to utilize the great Kool-Aid buzz he had going at the time.

He was coming up for that “Rising”.

marc | 11/17/2008, 5:14 pm EST

tomorrow, not a cover

Jungleland2 | 11/17/2008, 5:18 pm EST

VERY good news

Nathan | 11/17/2008, 7:17 pm EST

For Mazzy: You have a good point there. I will say that the two “bonus” tracks have already been released in one form or another. “The Wrestler” was written for and featured in the recent movie of the same name. “A Night with the Jersey Devil” was released (with a video) on his official website on Halloween this year. It has since been taken down.

So, I’m still not sure why they weren’t just included in the regular track listing, but there’s a partial answer why they’re different from the other 12…

Mazzy

Springsteen albums are like little novels or movies. They are connected with a theme and sound, and tell a story or paint a picture if you will.

The Wrestler and Jersey Devil are not a part of that picture, thus making them extras/bonus tracks. It’s like a directer putting two deleted scenes on a DVD after the film is over and those two scenes have no part in the film itself.

Patrick Naugle | 11/17/2008, 10:41 pm EST

Shiznit, this is the fastest turnaround time for Bruce to release an album…that I’ve ever seen! At least, two rock albums (it seems when he’s done a rock record, we get years of wait that usually ends in something like Tom Joad or Devil’s and Dust….). Woo hoo!

kay | 11/18/2008, 3:05 am EST

no better news could possibly arise in the music cosmos than the release of a Springsteen record. the dude has been on FIRE these last few years putting out some of his best music ever, especially with the Rising and Seeger Sessions. Magic is stellar too. I don’t even care if I’m disappointed with the new work, it’s something to get thru the winter blues.

I freakin’ LOVE Bruce!!! Best writer and performer ever.

Brengun | 11/18/2008, 4:12 am EST

GREAT NEWS!!! Bruce, while you’re at it, how about releasing a live album from your Devil’s & Dust Tour? The tour stop in Toronto blew me away!!!

Dr Mabuse | 11/18/2008, 11:26 am EST

I hope they don’t mess up the sound as on “Magic.” I want to be able to listen to it without cringing.

garbage | 11/18/2008, 3:15 pm EST

this song sucks, and it sounds like
the chevrolet mellencamp song,
why is this considered so great?
i am really missing the big deal
about “The Boss”. one of the most
overrated artists of all time.

Pretty stoked…I like “workin on a dream” alot but hopes he lets the guitars loose on some of the news tracks..if its half is good as magic or the rising Ill be excited the mans that good.

jerry | 11/18/2008, 11:33 pm EST

Bruce got 5 stars from Rolling Stone on five straight albums from 1975 to 1988. And the albums just before and just after that run came in at 4 1/2 stars! Can anyone come close to that? AND, his first album came out 36 years ago! Can’t wait for the next.

re: Garbage | 11/19/2008, 3:20 am EST

You’re just missing the point then, dude. Springsteen is amazing, and you’re another one of those people that has to rain venomous posts on articles about artists you don’t like.

Je$$e | 11/19/2008, 8:02 am EST

wow…Bruce got 5 stars? this is the same rag who fawns over Yoko Ono albums and slams Zeppelin..I wouldn’t wipe my a$$ with this rag..

Charlie Miller | 11/20/2008, 2:12 am EST

I’ve met Bruce (family friend of Nils Lofgren)- Great guy, it doesn’t make him a great musician.

I don’t get it- his voice is like when I get drunk, and make fun of opera singers, and there’s just nothing special about the music. I’ll give him one thing though, his shows, if you like his stuff, are pretty impressive. Too bad his stuff sucks.

Jeff | 11/20/2008, 4:54 pm EST

I think they are bonus tracks because they have been released in some fashion and I don’t believe those two songs were recorded with the E Street Band. Too bad some of you guys are missing out on Bruce. He’s the greatest all-around performer in the history of rock music. No one can do as many things and as well as Bruce. Great singer, songwriter, guitar player, composer, performer … Democrat. He’s a great man, and better rock star. Love you Bruce!

John R. | 11/21/2008, 8:31 pm EST

I really love springsteen. it really is amazing that he can write stuff this fast, and having it still turn out sounding great. Which do you think is the best, born to run, nebraska, aor greetings from asbury park?

Great News! Hope it’s as good as everything he’s done in the last 7 years. A new president and a new Bruce CD–2009 is looking to be a good year!

Fireball2745 | 11/22/2008, 9:05 pm EST

I’m very excited! I never thought that we would see springsteen with another new pop album with the e street band. I can’t wait til it comes out! In my opinion, he is the best. His songs have true meaning. That is hard to come by these days. His songs and music have truly changed my life. BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!!!

Steve M Brit | 11/23/2008, 1:44 am EST

I am surprised that a new album is on its way so soon. I have been a fan since 1975, but feel that the track ‘Working on a Dream’ sounds as if it might be an out-take from the Lucky Town/ Human Touch era. All that said, ‘Je$$e’ and ‘garbage’ are just totally wrong to suggest Bruce is overrated. The Man’s a genius, pure and simple

CHARGER14 | 11/23/2008, 4:00 am EST

I saw my first bs+esb in 1975. but, majic was not a great album. patty’s last album was a great album. i blame brenden o’brien who has as much talent as conan. a sixty year old musician should not write or sing “pop” music. pop music is for am radio and new artists looking for hits. i have never seen a better performer or a mediocre performance in the 15 plus concerts with the esb, solo or a backing band in the late 80’s. i hope he goes back to landau and even little steven for production duties and trusts his gut for what the springsteen sound should represent. i don’t mean the topics of cars and getting out of town. i mean 3 guitars, drums, bass, sax and keyboards with blasting vocals singing lyrics that have meaning and message that only he can provide. if you must allow someone else to produce, ring up daniel lanois. that would be an interesting collaboration. one last piece of input. allow nils, steven, big man and patty to sing a song each night and put out a raw live album with their material and your all time best covers for a double album release. you may even involve back street and rs readers for other ideas that i’m sure would be fun. rock on.

William | 11/23/2008, 5:42 am EST

No matter what some say. Overrated my ass! Bruce is the greatest singer song writer, performer of all times. And his voice has all the character to make his brilliantly chosen words en beautiful stories even better
The man just rocks, and for almost 40 years already! Still going strong!

My First An Post In This Forum | 1/15/2009, 12:23 am EST

This album is sending shivers down my spine. I play it back-to-back. It’s freaking ON FIRE with energy and passion and positive vibes. I was into Springsteen back in ‘73, saw him on the Born To Run tour, and I have to say I fell out with the guy since. I didn’t rate Magic, either. I think the positive reviews were based more on prayer than product. This time, though, he’s got the whole deal. Fantastic songs that seem like well-loved classics the first time you hear them, nicely varied vocals (never heard him sing quite like he does on the wonderful Life Itself), and a tough, full production sound.

This is the one I’d given up hope of ever hearing (AND there’s a backwards guitar solo! and whistling!)

If you’re hoping that this one delivers, you will NOT be disappointed. His best album since BTR. Maybe his best album – I’m giving it the time, and so will you.
