Slash, Billy Gibbons Jam for Les Paul at Rock Hall’s American Music Masters Concert

11/17/08, 2:36 pm EST

Six decades of six-string greats gathered for the American Music Masters Tribute Concert honoring Les Paul at Cleveland’s State Theater on Saturday. The sold-out show was the climax of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s week-long tribute to one of the top guitar performers and innovators. Even Guitar Hero poster-boy Slash was wide-eyed and humble like a freshman glad to be at a seniors’ party.

(Click above to watch Slash open up about his four Les Pauls — including the one he used on “Sweet Child O’ Mine” — plus interviews with Billy Gibbons and Richie Sambora.)

Backstage before the show, Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye neatly summarized Paul’s contributions: “Before Les, guitars were only amplified. Les made them truly electric.” Born in 1915, Paul had a string of hit singles from the 1940s through the ’60s. As an engineer, player and technician, he pioneered solid-body guitar construction, the lead guitar position, multitrack recording and effects from delay to phasing. He designed a family of heavy guitars for Gibson, the most famous of which might be the 1988 Les Paul standard from Guns n’ Roses’ “Sweet Child” video. Said Paul during his acceptance speech, “Everybody thought I was a guitar until I played here tonight.”

The concert was chummy gathering of peers, many with a similar story about seeing the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show, buying a fake Les Paul replica, getting a real one, achieving fame, meeting Paul, and finding him to be a funny, likeable guy who’s still hard to keep up with onstage.

Paul capped the three-and-a-half hour tribute by accepting an American Music Masters award statue and playing a set with the Les Paul Trio, which backed him for a tear-jerking rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” The marathon concert kicked off with renditions of Paul’s material, including a lighter-than-air “Lover (When You’re Near Me)” by Jennifer Batten (Michael Jackson, Jeff Beck) and a deft take on “Vaya Con Dios” by Alannah Myles and Kaye.

The show transitioned with songs from the new Les Paul and Friends: Tribute to a Legend album, with highlights like Slash’s airy “Vocalise” and Richie Sambora’s “Great Hall of Fame,” a tribute to bar-band lifers. The diamond-selling artists kept the crowd happy with tunes they said Paul made possible. Sambora sang Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive,” and the night ended with an all-star jam.

Backstage before the show, Slash said, “Les Paul guitars have a certain tonal characteristic that is really meaningful to me. It’s a big rock & roll sound.” ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons said Paul didn’t so much hotwire the guitar as weaponize it. “He had the rather unusual idea to bring out this war club and electrify it — something [that seemed] unnecessary or frivolous, but turned out to be a cornerstone of popular culture.”

What an honor to witness an awe inspiring evening of performances that can never be duplicated. I told my friend that I was not sure if we truly “realized” all that we had seen and heard; we will have to buy the DVD, pinch ourselves and say “yes…we were there”
Les Paul is truly a remarkable man who is so inspiring and can really “strut” his stuff

may i say u all seem to be missing 1 point without the blues as a basis for your music the electric guitar would be worthless.as far as i know les paul is not a blues man.it was us brits who disscoverd the blues and gave it back to you, people like john mayel peter green eric clapton the stones and alexis corner.we also disscoverd jimi hendrix you all seem to have missed him until he came to britain.

I am very thankful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share this amazing concert with my son. I thank all the performers, who were amazing, the Rock Hall and Case Western Reserve people who brought this together, and of course, Les Paul.

bonnytyler | 11/23/2008, 9:25 pm EST

wow that would of been one hell of a concert.

It was a fabulous night, it was the best concert ticket that I’ve bought.

mATTERgOD | 11/21/2008, 10:20 pm EST

WOW!!! Les Paul jamming at 93! What a treasure. Although I am a “Fender Strat guy,” I know…BOO! I still have an immense appreciation for Les Paul and his overwhelming contributions to the music I hold dear. While I am not rich enough to own a Gibson Les Paul, I do have an Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty…and it is an amazing axe! It is a fabulous instrument that is only limited by my own abilities.

Honestly, this story is the greatest that I have read on Rolling Stone that I can remember. This really should have been the cover of an issue. For God’s sake, Les Paul playing at 93 with legends that pay homage to him…it doesn’t get any better!!!

Hopefully, there will be an opportunity to buy this fantastic night on DVD. In our consumeristic society, I can’t imagine that it won’t be available.

Finally, to Les Paul…THANK YOU. You have done so much for so many of us. We truly are indebted to you!

I made the show and was in awe. I can proudly say that I have seen two of the most influential guitar players of all time, Les Paul and Chet Atkins. I was very impressed with Barbara Lynn also. I met her at the after party and she is a beautiful person. Don’t forget Duanne Eddy and Lonnie Mack.

Dave | 11/20/2008, 2:02 pm EST

Does anyone know where I can fnd pictures from this event?

David & Aaron from Chicago | 11/19/2008, 11:34 pm EST

drove 360 miles each way in a day to see this fantastic show. billy gibbons and steve lukather were eloquent, with and without their guitars!

and les was simply amazing!!!

Michael Thomas | 11/19/2008, 11:33 pm EST

What bliss to see Jennifer Batten step out from behind the icon artists she had played with in the past, by herself, without a band & deliver an incredible tribute to the MAN. Les Paul returned the compliment by personally coming out to the backstage audience view video monitor to watch Jennifer himself…& walked back to the green room with a huge smile of approval. Perfect !

Slash | 11/18/2008, 10:34 pm EST

Thanks Slash for all, say no more

Jesse Solomon | 11/18/2008, 5:06 pm EST

What a special night. Steve Lukather’s performance and fitting words, as well as Billy Gibbons’ heartfelt anectdotes, Les Paul’s wit and charm, and a very proud moment of watching my good friend Jennifer Batten mesmerize the crowd and receive a standing ovation. Topping the night off with a fun after party with some great small talk with some big names was fantastic. Thanks!

Forget about all the technology of today and bad music on this one. Anyone who witnessed this show was among the Elite.
Les Paul is 93 and rocking and wow the performance by Myles as Mary Ford was truly fabulous and satisfying. Other highlights were the house band ????? and the rendition of Steve Lukather playing “Over The Rainbow” which was jaw drop insane. NO ONE plays the guitar as good as him.
Cleveland does Rock and Go Browns!
Sorry Buffalo.

Worth many times the cost of admission. An event of a lifetime that me and my 14 year old grand son will remember the rest of our lives. God bless Les Paul and Rock & Roll. (OK… and Slash too)

Alannah Myles | 11/17/2008, 8:08 pm EST

What an honour to be included among the gentry of rock’s finest. Thank you to the Rock Hall for prodding me to accept the challenge of a Mary Ford remake and to Americans everywhere for celebrating a song as American as mom’s apple pie in my own Black Velvet.

Bravo, Les Paul for showing us all how it done!
