Paul McCartney Wants to Release “Lost” 14-Minute Beatles Track

In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Paul McCartney revealed that he is trying to release a Beatles song that some swore didn’t exist. “Carnival of Light” is supposedly a 14-minute improvised psychedelic jam the band recorded in 1967 and was left off of the Anthology releases because it was “too adventurous.” “The time has come for its moment,” said McCartney, who is looking into getting approval from Ringo Starr and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison to release the track. “I like it because it’s like the Beatles free.” McCartney didn’t provide a time frame for the song’s release or whether it would be included on a compilation or exist as a stand-alone song.

I’ve been dying to hear this track for many years, ever since I read about in the Complete Beatles Recording Sessions book in the late 80s…

If Paul can’t get approval to officially release it, I hope he just goes ahead and leaks it on the internet.

Gitch | 11/17/2008, 9:28 am EST

This should be interesting…

Rob | 11/17/2008, 9:59 am EST

I love the Beatles, but I have a feeling this song is going to be horrible. If they kept it off the Anthology and instead went with recording a new song with old Lennon demos, then this song has to be bad. I’ll buy it but he should be careful how he releases it.

jb | 11/17/2008, 10:38 am EST

never knew this song even existed….I wonder if it was recorded before “Interstellar Overdrive” by Floyd which is also a long drawn out (but completley awesome) “psych jam” recorded also in 1967 for their album “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”…..could the Beatles have been borrowing idea’s from Floyd which was still quite below the radar in 1967?….very interesting indeed.

killtheindustry | 11/17/2008, 10:49 am EST

There is nothing “lost”about anything Beatles.

Sir Paul just needs to fleece you all a bit more to make up for that settlement he had to pay the one legged gold digger,

Are you really that hard up for music? Go find some new bands on Myspace instead of lapping up every scraping from this has been.

Boris Dignan | 11/17/2008, 10:57 am EST

A 14 Minute “Unreleased” Beatles song???

Hell Yeah!!!

Rob J. | 11/17/2008, 11:07 am EST

It’s supposedly not really a ’song’… It’s more in the spirit of ‘Revolution 9′, or ‘What’s The New Mary Jane?’…. except that it was recorded during Sgt. Pepper sessions.

I know Paul has been trying to get it released for a long time. I really hope he gets it done this time.

Okay, it may be ’scraping the bottom of the barrel’, as a previous posted.

But the Beatles’ “leftovers” are far superior than the greatest efforts by almost any other band. So bring it on.

Rob S. | 11/17/2008, 11:32 am EST

Interesting…I just finished reading some “conspiracy theories” about “Sir Paul”. Said he was killed in a car crash before Sgt Pepper and replaced with a look-a-like. It IS peculiar how Lennon and Mac were almost polar opposites in every aspect, and Lennon was the one “offed”, while the NWO shill, Sir Paul collected his knighthood, became a true “insider” and began hawking for credit card companies!

Since “Carnival of Light” is more of a soundscape, as opposed to a song, then it would be a great idea to put together a dvd of artwork done by John, Paul, George and Ringo, and put together some type of art collage. The other idea is to put out an EP of some of the Avant Garde work of The Beatles with Carnival of Light, What’s yer new Mary Jane, The Inner Light, and Revolution #9. Another idea is to finally release “The Beatles Christmas Album” of messages for this Christmas, and include “Carnival of Light” as a bonus track.

c6kyle | 11/17/2008, 3:29 pm EST

When Paul&Wings material was re-mastered with added tracks on nearly every album. “Venus & Mars” features a jam , not a 15:00 one but about 5 or 6 mins called “My Carnival” It would be interesting if Paul was nicking bits of his older tunes just to have some fun with them again?

Pete Best | 11/17/2008, 3:37 pm EST

This definitely does sound interesting! Looking forward to hearing it, hopefully soon.

Oh – and Rob S, you’re weird.

spencer | 11/17/2008, 3:44 pm EST

if chinese democracy is getting released now, why not go for it in 2008? while we’re at it, what about neil young’s chrome dreams, prince’s crystal ball and dr. dre’s detox?

s.lennon | 11/17/2008, 5:37 pm EST

releaseing it free on the net is the best way all around.having bought all of their origional releases and than some,a freebee would be the hippie thing to do

Chris | 11/17/2008, 7:26 pm EST

This would be awesome!!!!!!! They should release a new Beatles single with the unfinished John Lennon song they started to work on during the Anthology sessions, “Now and Then”, as the A-side and “Carnival of Light” as the B-side. That would be awesome.

Big Daddy Cane LXA | 11/17/2008, 8:01 pm EST

Two quick things…

‘My Carnival’ is a McCartney outtake inspired by his time at either Mardi Gras or Carnivale in Brazil (I can’t remember which).

I too believe that this track could be fairly awful, kinda like Blue Jay Way but 4 times longer.

However, I cannot wait to hear it as well, because, like the saw says, ‘I just had to look, having read the book…’

The Rutles | 11/17/2008, 9:09 pm EST

You think Paul went down on one leg when he proposed ???

Ric | 11/17/2008, 9:47 pm EST

I would totally embrace this idea only if it were a extra track on the much ignored remastered editions of the original albums. Stop this ridiculous shit. Lets admit honestly that the 2nd cd of Let it be NAKED… is virtually un-listenable (as is revoloution #9 for that matter). Please if anyone out there is listening. There are far to few recordings left out there that would warrant official release (though I am sure there is someone who will disagree) what is clearly needed, wanted’ and long awaited is a proper re-release of the original albums in a up to date format. SACD would be cool. SOMETHING! No more circue de sol- what the fuck ever (though it was an interesting approach I would have settled for Abbey Road Cleaned UP). Just remaster and put the albums back out. It has been 20+ years. Even the Stones have gotten with the program (2002 sacd remasters very nice)

JD | 11/17/2008, 10:18 pm EST

Release it for free, Paul.

Orgo | 11/17/2008, 10:23 pm EST

Nuts to that-how ’bout releasing “Let It Be” on DVD!

Ms Kazz 11/18/08 ,2:24 am | 11/18/2008, 2:32 am EST

They’re truely totally always life inspiring music has always touched me in an awsome way ,so I welcome the release as a cool adventure down memory lane; once I get to finally here it.

Joseph | 11/18/2008, 5:46 am EST

If Paul really loves us then he’ll release it for free.

thebrutaltimes | 11/18/2008, 9:05 am EST

yes, yes if we are blessed it will be as nice as cirque du soliel! when i saw how paul and mr ringo humanized their beatles in vegas i became radiant with pregnant joy. but what about Suicide Wings- that unreleased Macca solo extravaganza, eh? eh?

Pitt | 11/18/2008, 11:26 am EST

14 minutes is very long, but very nice.

Chad | 11/18/2008, 12:17 pm EST

That would be the most amazing thing ever if that song is released i love when band just jam together and make crazy good music…please please please release that song

hitman | 11/19/2008, 8:05 am EST

another way to ca$h in. and all the lemings will run right out and buy it.

Joe | 11/19/2008, 11:51 am EST

I don’t think Paul has enough money. He’ll do another Beatles greatest hits compilation and throw this acid-soaked outtake on there as a bone to his Kool-Aid drinkers. When he says “the Beatles free” I don’t think he means without cost passed along to Beatles “fans”.

njoy | 11/19/2008, 7:10 pm EST

You people wanting this track for free are pathetic. The track is probably not going to be great, so if you don’t want it, don’t buy it. Easy as that. Why should this track be free? Just bit torrent it if you are that desparate for a hand me down.

JoeNY | 11/19/2008, 7:41 pm EST

It won’t be released until Yoko figures out how to stick her vocals on it and she gets the lions share of the reward. Careful Paul, the plot is being formulated as we speak.

StevenX | 11/20/2008, 10:08 am EST

Wow. On one end we have Sir Paul trying desperately to keep in the limelight of past glories, on the other we have Ringo saying “no more fan mail ever”. Spooooky.

Anonymous | 11/20/2008, 11:29 am EST

Whatever; Lennon got to release the almost unlistenable
“Revolution 9″ on the White Album (if any of you can honestly say you don’t skip over that track on any medium you are lying) and “What’s The New Mary Jane?” (a piece of crap) on the Anthology. Paul’s not doing it for the money, he’s doing it for the same reason Lennon did: he wants to show his experimental side. If you don’t like it don’t buy it. I don’t think Paul cares either way if you buy it or download it. I think he just wants to release it. It will probably be just as crappy as Revolution 9 or What’s The New Mary Jane but at least it’ll feature all 4 Beatles and NOT just John, George and Yoko like the former two songs. I agree with the guy who said release Let it Be on DVD. That would be wicked.

Mr. Kite | 11/21/2008, 6:38 am EST

put it out but I’m not expecting much at all. There is nothing entertaining about ‘jamming’ 95% of the time. I love most of their music but when they went ‘experimental,’ it usually was pretty bad (see previous posts for those songs).

rasta | 11/22/2008, 12:18 pm EST

Check out the new reggae CD by T. Irie Dread. Not just some frat boys playing guitar. Real reggae. Your ears are safe. So check them out. T. Irie Dread

RickELake | 11/22/2008, 2:55 pm EST

Release it! I don’t care if it’s The Beatles reading the phone book -If it’s Beatles I want it! :)

brandon W | 11/22/2008, 3:17 pm EST

There was a book released about 20 yrs ago detailing every recording session the Beatles had. Any true Beatles fan who has read it knows there is a TON of interesting tracks still to be released. 20 minute helter skelter, the 10 minutes revolution 1, 30 hours of let it be sessions. 10 of BBC stuff. the 1st electric while my guitar gently weeps, and many other alternate takes of various degree. Anthology sucked for the obvious omissions. A three of 4 disc Let It Be Dvd and Hollywood Bowl and Shea Stadium dvd should be put out too!!!!

Heather Mills | 11/22/2008, 3:49 pm EST

I would much prefer listening to the new Paul McCartney album as he is my favorite singer/songwriter.

Perpetual hymn of an open book.

Like an iced
dream my mind
disappears in
the heart of
an innocent
nurse, when a
clamour appears
and a delicate
blackbird discovers
a glimmer.

mowtar | 11/22/2008, 7:47 pm EST

Yes, it should be released for the time capsule that it is. They’re not making any more music together, dig ? And to those who don’t like Revolution number 9, kiss off. It was the perfect set up for Ringo’s following lullaby to “everybody everywhere”.

zapple68 | 11/22/2008, 11:26 pm EST

Sorry “anonymous”, I listen to “Revolution 9″ every time I play The White Album, (am playing it right now), and I love it, and I’m not lying. This new “lost” song is indeed old news to anyone who has read the Abbey road recoding diary book…I would love to hear it.

Norwood | 11/23/2008, 9:08 am EST

Oh just release it already…it’s The Beatles for God’s sake. I agree with some of the others that I can’t listen to Revolution 9 or What’s the New Mary Jane (sorry John, you were and still are my favorite, but those were just awful) so how bad could it be? It’s a piece of history from the Sgt. Pepper era. If you don’t like don’t buy it.

cristiandario | 11/24/2008, 10:49 am EST

i just hate Paul, how greedy can a man be?, he is the most disgusting beatle, always after money, if he really cared about his fans he should release those songs for free, hate him.

Me | 12/23/2008, 1:29 pm EST

Leave the experimentation to Pink Floyd, not The Beatles.

Dude | 2/9/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Revolution 9 is an amazing song. I am guessing most of you dont get stoned and listen to the beatles which doesn’t suprise me. And the kid who wrote “Leave the experimentation to Pink Floyd, not The Beatles.” Must not know his music history very well. As i recall the beatles were the first to experiment with rock and roll, and made it there own. I am looking foward to listening to this track dispite all the negitive feedback from people who are so uneducated in music and people who are just plan stupid.

ratzo | 3/11/2009, 11:29 pm EST

put it out already uless its lready booted

bluejazz51 | 3/21/2009, 3:20 pm EST

I say release everything The Beatles ever recorded.
I’m still waiting for the official release of the movie “Let It Be” to dvd. A compilation of their promo videos would be nice too, while the original Beatle fans are still alive. lol!

roger | 4/4/2009, 11:15 pm EST

turn me on dead man

Shaun from Queens, New York | 5/19/2009, 9:03 pm EST

Come on PAUL!!! Let us hear this song! I want to smoke grass and relax to your 14 minute track! I’m not getting any older!…..Please don’t wake me, no don’t shake me. Leave me where I am…..I’m only sleeeeeping.

JLA | 8/12/2009, 7:10 pm EST

Yes indeed, release it. It is history. A couple of comments on a couple of comments. Yes the Beatles did rethink the way music was listened to and most of all recorded. They along with George Martin were masters in the studio. Revolution Number 9…. I have never listened to this recording that it did not scare me. I’m talking true creepiness. I don’t get scared… period…. But #9 is very strange for me… I like it but I’m sceeeeeeeered!!!
