A Look Back at 1991 as New Guns N’ Roses Single “Better” Premieres

11/17/08, 1:05 pm EST

Photo: Getty

It’s T-minus six days until Guns n’ RosesChinese Democracy hits Best Buy shelves, and the next taste is live online. “Better” is the second official single from the long-awaited album, and like it’s predecessor “Chinese Democracy” it has been floating around in unfinished versions for years. Also like the first single, “Better” feels like classic Guns n’ Roses — Rose’s growling croon in the verses could have floated out of the Use Your Illusion sessions. While you’re rocking out to “Better,” think about what the world was like the last time Axl put out an original album, which was way back in September of 1991. Think about it: One of the Jonas Brothers hadn’t been born yet, Bill Clinton was still just a guy from Arkansas who had no shot at winning a national election and it would be years before Jason Voorhees went to hell or space.

The album is fan “fuckin’ tastic……not pure Guns N’ Roses - just an excellent blend of Heavy Rock, Rock and Ballads…..The boys done good. Muscically one of the best albums for years!!!

axl rose | 1/9/2009, 10:48 am EST

helo Mother Fucker…

Thaddeus | 1/7/2009, 3:27 pm EST

This album sucks . Nothing like the old G&R . Seriously there are only a few good songs . 15 years for what 14 he was in rehab. G&R without Slash. I don’t think so.

eigram1 | 12/10/2008, 11:07 pm EST

Great album. No matter what anyone says. I listen to music for my own self and no one elese. Each is own. Good job Axel.

Lachlan | 11/22/2008, 6:56 am EST

What would guys rather???
coldplay? killers? arctic monkeys? snow patrol?

to get some material from a REAL rocker is a breath of fresh air…because i’m tired of the boring and uninspiring lame shit that we get these days…and i’m not some old fart, i’m only 17

alex | 11/21/2008, 6:40 pm EST

well now that I had listened to the full album, I feel like im traveling back to 1991, this cd, made me remember why the old stuff its better than the crap that is out today, Axl is truly an artist that writes from the heart and I believe true rock and roll comes from the heart, god bless the good times and also the bad times, guns music has always been there for me, i love the new stuff and will love it to the last day, why?? because its the soundtrack of an era where rock and roll truly meant something, god bless the 90s and Axl for finishing this cd, long live the 90s =)

mullethead is a dumbass | 11/19/2008, 2:36 pm EST

Dear AxL i am sorry to inform you that your time came and passed already. In fact you pretty much threw it all away being a weirdo asshole. You may have got the name of the band but the name now means nothing. It will always conjure up memories of the good stuff that made you rich and famous. This schizophrenic hodge podge of bullshit makes you look pathetic and trying to remain relevent. You should have put this out under the AXL ROSE CIRCUS OF FREAKS or something as to not tarnish the good name.It is the worst bunch of crap i have ever heard. We wouldn’t have ever known your name had you tried to put this out 20 years ago.Either way in the end it will purchased largely by the curious in used music stores for $1 anyway. What a sad way to go out.It sounds like what it is.years of demos going nowhere no matter how hard they were tweeked or who you got to play on them. You should have scrapped it all and started over with a new entity you self righteous full of shit asswipe. The real members of the band and have more than kind so far. That is because they are laughing their asses off because their stuff is light years better and much truer to their music.

nik | 11/19/2008, 1:14 pm EST

the song is awsome!! i love it

Chad | 11/19/2008, 11:58 am EST

I’m so tired of people posting bias reviews because of, No Slash/Izzy, took too long to release, they don’t like Axl. Judge the music. I think the new music sounds awesome. If this was a new rock group releasing this record everyone would be talking about how it’s the best rock record in years.

BSExp | 11/19/2008, 11:26 am EST

Truely awful.

Well | 11/19/2008, 11:13 am EST

I have been a constant Axl defender over the years and have resisted the temptation to listen to the leaked tracks. From what I’ve heard, Axl sounds phenomenal. The lyrics are great. The sound quality, for all you Death Magnetic haters, is awesome. It is better, by far, than new releases from Nickelback and David Cook. But given that, the music sounds like it was played by hired guns. It reminds me of solo records by Mick Jagger and Steve Perry. No emotion to the playing. It’s all about the singer. I wish I could hear what this would sound like if he had his boys back. Even if Izzy won’t come back and they have Dave Kushner playing, it would be miles above this release. Count me as disappointed, and thankfull that my reward zone points paid for this release. Until something changes, at least we have Buckcherry. Not as good as GNR proper, but better than new Guns and VR.

Benny | 11/19/2008, 12:41 am EST

Great song, good album. Agree with 4 of 5 stars.

NJ | 11/18/2008, 8:42 pm EST

Pretty amazing album.

Axl has the last laugh.

NJ | 11/18/2008, 8:42 pm EST

Axl has the last laugh.

Dolemite is DEAD | 11/18/2008, 8:40 pm EST

People get over the fact that its not slash , izzy and duff. That is so tired and old. Personally i think the album should be released as just AXL ROSE because it still will sell, maybe not as much. This is the a good song on a good album. The Mainstream rock is so bad right now that this trumps everything. I think people should be thankful they actually have some of there real rock stars back rather then bitch about them for “selling out” or Takin too long. if you want to complain why don’t you shut th fuck up and go back to listening to daughtery and fall out boy

Dave aka W-A-R | 11/18/2008, 5:02 pm EST

The new GNR rocks! Better sounds great and i know the rest of the album will too. Def. better than anything new of radio in the past 15 years at least.

GrayFox117 | 11/18/2008, 4:25 pm EST

Well despite all the negative stuff that’s said and the positive, I’m just glad to hear Axl’s voice on some current stuff and playin on the radio…it’s pretty cool cause I dont know what in the world the state of rock n roll is in right now and it’s good to hear the voice of a true bonafide rocker………..Whatever incarnation the band is in right now GNR is as important to us here in the states as the stones and zeppelin are in england and AC/DC is to australia

j | 11/18/2008, 4:17 pm EST

This song is so good that I can’t get it out of my head and I haven’t even heard it yet.

Geno | 11/18/2008, 3:04 pm EST

Just heard the official album release. Maybe not worth a 15+ years wait but it’s fuckin GREAT!

Dani Rose from Brazil!!! | 11/18/2008, 2:47 pm EST

This album is amazing…I love Axl…he’s the best!!!!

TECK64 | 11/18/2008, 2:08 pm EST

The cover screams

AXL ROSE DELIVERS!!

This album Rocks !

Eric | 11/18/2008, 1:45 pm EST

Better it’s not. I didn’t even listen to the whole thing.

rhastaa | 11/18/2008, 1:44 pm EST

I don’t have any reacton at all with the exception of sadness.I miss the great band that once was and probably never will again. This is a pathetic song trying vainly to cash in on what guns n roses once was..This dude is now completely irrelevent weird and self absorbed.the sound is sterile and contrived..no warmth ,grit and feeling that the original band had.It is a pastiche of great players but in that end it amounts to nothing at all really..I fucking hate it.

Jacoby | 11/18/2008, 12:59 pm EST

SryDoggie…please explain to us what real rock music is these days?? The track Chinese Democracy and this track Better are, well better than anything on the radio at this moment in time. You complain that this song doesnt have an identity, that it starts off as a ballad and then gets heavier…well dude i hate to break it to you but that is how most GNR songs sound. They start off in one direction and then take on a new one, which in my opinion is why they are so great. Keep listening to Nickleback and all that 3 chord same riff over and over crap!!

United Roses | 11/18/2008, 11:28 am EST

I believe it will get shot at by loads of people. Just for the fact that Axl has taken so long in making it, but he has gone through almost 2 decades with this album. The music back then is different from the music now. Musically i believe the album will be a breath of fresh air from the copy and pass music being thrown out these days. The fact that Axl keeps so much to himself makes it even more excitement for its release, it will give a chance to see wat Axl has wrote and find out his feeling over everything these last few years

Tyson | 11/18/2008, 10:31 am EST

This is a great, hard rocking, new era GNR song. For all of those people that can only be overly critical and insulting, go listen to Coldplay and Beyonce. Axl Rose is a timeless talent and this album is going to be the best in years.

Dan | 11/18/2008, 10:31 am EST

Great song…looking forward to getting my hands on the album. Like the Illusions records I think it will be something that needs to be listened to in its entirety before one can pass judgement. Like the build up to Coma on UYI 1 or Estranged on UYI 2…it should be interesting to see how these songs frame each other as opposed to simply standing up on their own.

cpaxlvacy | 11/18/2008, 10:07 am EST

Sorry my mistake, there’s the post, AND WHERE ARE THE IZZY AND STEVEN REACTIONS??????????????????

SryDoggie | 11/18/2008, 9:55 am EST

Oh well, at least if you DO go out and buy this sorry excuse for real rock music you get a free Dr. Pepper! LOL…fuckin’ sell outs.

cpaxlvacy | 11/18/2008, 9:53 am EST

AMAZING, SIMPLY AMAZING…This song its better than anything Slash and co. has produced since they left GN’R, This album is the bst album in years.Everyone should support the band and buy the album….Thank you Axl

SryDoggie | 11/18/2008, 9:46 am EST

This song would be “Better” if it could figure out what the FUCK it is. This one starts off ballady and then has a nonsensicle heavy riff portion, then goes back to whiny butt-rock and finishes with a surprising pussification of what was once America’s greatest band. I can’t decide which song sucks bigger hog, “Chinese Democracy” or “Better”…all I do know is they both sound like water-logged old, dead “Guns” n’ crunchy, dried out, souless “Roses”. Axl, do us all a favor, let this heap fester and stink up the charts and stay away from the arenas. Just the thought of this travesty in my city is nauseating enough to make me board up my windows til the apocalypse passes through.

V | 11/18/2008, 9:21 am EST

Maybe Axle can open up for Metallica next year :(

Marc | 11/18/2008, 9:09 am EST

Finally, a good song to come from this album. Chinese Democracy, Shackler’s Revenge, and If the World have all sucked serious balls. Let’s hope there is more of songs like “Better” on the album.

Jonny | 11/18/2008, 8:29 am EST

This sounds like a track from a bad Dream Theater album.

Roy | 11/18/2008, 8:16 am EST

Amazing song! Gotta love the bluesy 2nd solo!!!!

just give it up | 11/18/2008, 7:27 am EST

axl sucks…this is not guns and roses…..its the axl rose solo project…

Mikko Riihimäki, Finland | 11/18/2008, 7:23 am EST

I HAVE to write on the CD’s sleeve. At first sight, it seems to evoke the days of 70s hard rock. But on closer inspection, it sure must depict the state of GNRs affairs, now. The picture stems from the present. That beat-up bicycle could be the band itself, its name scrawled on the wall a bit to the northwest, of which Axl is now the sole rider. The rest of the boys are plucking their guitars down some side alleys, and they have abandoned the bike on the street, or maybe sold it off to drug vendors. Axl has to pump those pedals to get ahead and - take a look at the load of baggage he has a straw basket for, or should it be called a basket case?! If the pic is asking for pity, there’s a basketful coming! But this was in jest, cuz the CD’s the best :P .

Alexandre from Brazil | 11/18/2008, 5:47 am EST

I love this song…Axl is God

Brendan | 11/18/2008, 5:40 am EST

Axl was the only compelling member of the original GnR lineup anyway. Slash is a good blues-rock guitarist with good tone on his Les Paul, that’s it. Duff is capable but his chorus-pedaled-out bass sound is too 80’s-ish for today. Adler, well, he has his problems. The troubled genius types are the best rock has to offer; Cobain, Lennon, Brian Wilson, Jacko, and Axl.

darren | 11/18/2008, 5:21 am EST

do people really expect the record to sound like appetite come on that was a life time ago weather it is a commercial sucess or not true gnr fans have waited a long time to hear some great music from a great artist. and as far as all the so called fans who bag axl for breaking up the original line up sure he has some issues but it couldnt all be roses working with self confessed junkies, we have only ever heard the rest of the band side of the story, nothing from axl now theres an idea for a book

arg axl | 11/18/2008, 5:18 am EST

the emperor is back!!!!!

Mikko Riihimäki, Finland | 11/18/2008, 4:25 am EST

“Better” is better than I thought it would be. But “There Was a Time” (the abbr. TWAT does not do it justice) is even better than “Better”. That’s a sure bet. It’s like a sequel to the song “The Garden” which I think is one of the finest on UYI I. So I think I’ll have to haul my ass to Epe’s (Music) and buy that damn LP on Nov 22nd. I could waste my money on worse records these days; records that tell me nothing about my life, whereas Axl’s does (?) :) .

Lina | 11/18/2008, 4:08 am EST

This song ROCKS!!!Axl is back,and the album is a masterpiece!Best rock I`ve heard in a looong,loong time!
To all Axl haters-get a life, and leave us,the fans,to enjoy this great music!!!

F”"” RS, the only reason I read that is for the lie they have on the main page. Where the hell are the responses by the actual members of the real guns and roses?

That song should be called “Painful”. There’s nothing ‘Better’ about. Sorry, I’m a fan and loved Chinese Democracy. I hope there’s something better on the album. Ouch.

Mr. Roy Von Hugen Dong | 11/18/2008, 12:35 am EST

Great song! So much better than most of the other garbage out there. I’ll be first in line at best buy on the 23rd to buy Chinese Democracy. Its going to be a great day.

P.S. Rolling Stone needs Axl on the cover of their next issue.

MrBrownstone | 11/18/2008, 12:34 am EST

The guy took 15 years to make this record. I’m guessing this sounds exactly the way he wants it to sound, and I respect the commitment to his art, even if I’m not moved by the art itself.

Appetite for Destruction was released the summer before my senior year in high school (call me old, but I saw the original GNR lineup play in a 1,000 seat auditorium before anybody knew who they were) and it was the soundtrack to my senior year (now THAT was a senior year, Zack Ephron who?). So far, Chinese Democracy doesn’t sound anything like the early material that made the band legendary. But, that’s okay, because I’m not 18 anymore, I’m 38, and not interested in a band that hasn’t evolved. If you want what sounded hot 20 years ago, buy the new AC/DC.

HELLO???? | 11/17/2008, 11:32 pm EST

Where are the reactions from Steve and Izzy? That is all I care about. I am already sick of RS inducing the self loathing Axel on this Chaotic Democracy. Sick and sad there is that little good music out that this all RS has to obsess about.

David | 11/17/2008, 11:23 pm EST

This song is more boring than watching flies fuck. The first single was much better, and even that didn’t really do much for me. This single is going to tank, it’s not even slightly catchy, and is clearly nothing radio will be interested in playing a lot. Too long + dated sound = Axl should have released this stuff in the 90s when he wrote it and this sound was more relevant.

..... | 11/17/2008, 11:02 pm EST

where are the reactions from izzy stradlin and steve adler?

Gary | 11/17/2008, 9:49 pm EST

Very unique and catchy; it definitely stands out much like the vintage Gnr did in 87. I remember the first time I heard Paradise City and Sweet Child, I remember thinking “how different” (look and sound) they were from White Snake, Def Leppard, Poison, White Lion, etc. I took me a little time before the greatness clicked. I felt a little sad that they didn’t sound like the “other bands.” then I realized that was because it was eons ahead of the the other ones. I get the same feeling with this one. Good track.

Wonder how he’s gonna plan on doing overproduced songs like this live?

Not bad other than the lame intro though.

Say what? | 11/17/2008, 9:15 pm EST

I can’t believe how great this album is shaping up to be. It’s nice to have some original rock injected back into the mainstream. Perhaps rock is in for a change now, kind of like the British Invasion or Grunge.

TJ LETHAL | 11/17/2008, 8:12 pm EST

This new song kicks so much ass!…guns n roses are back!..this is a number one hit for sure!.

Mullethead | 11/17/2008, 8:09 pm EST

This song is really, really going to piss off the Axl haters

It’s too good for them to bash without looking like idiots (although it’s not like they have any problem making themselves look like idiots on a regular basis), and will be mega successful. Their worst nightmare come true

Krims | 11/17/2008, 8:03 pm EST

Great great song! Rock n roll is really back with this one! Cant stop listening to it! Fill that cup with Jack RIGHT NOW!

Much better than the first single. I’ll have to check out the rest of the record now.

Mike | 11/17/2008, 7:54 pm EST

This is the best song ive heard out in a loooong time. Bands should be listening to this and trying to figure out how to steal it.

Nathan | 11/17/2008, 7:27 pm EST

Not bad, hard to believe it took 40 years to write it though.

Would it kill you guys to use some recent pictures?

BOONS | 11/17/2008, 6:52 pm EST

Rick H | 11/17/2008, 6:35 pm EST

It’s not Appetite but at his worse AXL and GnR is better than any of the sh!t out there right now or even in the last 10 years for that matter

Tomwatso | 11/17/2008, 6:33 pm EST

Just cannot get into that one. Sounds too much like a dance track. I know there is some guitar on it, but I just don’t care for it.

Arijit | 11/17/2008, 6:01 pm EST

Rock n’ roll is now better!! Love this song…..Axl, welcome back to the jungle!!

jud | 11/17/2008, 5:46 pm EST

WOW!!! One of the best rock songs I’ve heard in a really long time!!

Jeff | 11/17/2008, 5:11 pm EST

Hey look, almost everyone likes it!

Slash who?

To Paul Hogan Roark | 11/17/2008, 5:05 pm EST

Throw another shrimp on the barbie and offer a little more in-depth criticism than a painfully awkward pseudo-Freudian attempt to be funny. Ain’t it funny how every criticism i’ve read of anything related to CD has to to with the original lineup not being involved, the GNR name, or the length of time it took to finish?

Frank | 11/17/2008, 5:00 pm EST

Solid rock track…Good for Axel, it seems that he pull it up… much better than any of the music that you can hear now. The world needs more of this…

Roark | 11/17/2008, 4:42 pm EST

What is this crap
and how is this being released as Guns N Roses?

This is the sound of a megalomaniac masturbating
Sorry Axl
Sorry mates

this is just awful music

Leonardo Peixoto | 11/17/2008, 4:35 pm EST

Great song….awesome singing and guitars….Axl is still the best at what he does.

Nico1138 | 11/17/2008, 4:09 pm EST

Chinese Democracy will be the 3th album of original material from Guns n Roses: GNR Lies was not technically a new album, Use Your Illusion was a double albu (but it count as one) and The Spaggetthi Incident? include no new material.

And the funny thing is that because of the delays, each album was released on different format eras: Apettite for Destruction was released on the Vinyl era, Use your Illusion on the CD era, and Chinese Democracy on the MP3 era.

Curious, uh?

England | 11/17/2008, 3:54 pm EST

The best rock tune over the last years! This album will be all I’ve dreamed of, though I haven’t heard 3 of the songs in any form yet.

Boga888 | 11/17/2008, 3:49 pm EST

Who cares which single came out first! Both are great songs! Same with the rest in the album for sure. Slash who????

ronald | 11/17/2008, 3:42 pm EST

good song

Jonathan | 11/17/2008, 3:38 pm EST

This is the song I have been waiting for. I’m still very surprised they chose Chinese Democracy as the first single, this is a more unique, complete song. This will remind everyone why we’ve waited 17 years for this album

Joe | 11/17/2008, 3:10 pm EST

Quite simply a kick ass rock song with great guitar, smart snapping lyrics, and a great chorus.

Jacoby | 11/17/2008, 3:09 pm EST

I think the marketing genius’s over at Interscope wanted to put out the title track to generate buzz about the album. Now, Better is released as the second single and is much more like the classic Guns’, with a catchy chorus and nice guitar riff. Smart choice on their part. Either way both singles rock better than i expected and its a great sign that Axl still has the goods

Tyson | 11/17/2008, 3:07 pm EST

This is definitley one of the best rock songs of the last 10 years. END OF STORY. I am counting down the seconds to this album’s release on Sunday, Nov. 23rd.

Jim | 11/17/2008, 3:03 pm EST

So it took two years to do a few guitar overdubs!?!

This should have been released - along with the rest of the album - two years ago when it leaked. The changes to the finished tracks are nice, but not impactful.

While it’s the strongest track on the album, anybody who cares about or likes Guns N’ Roses has already heard this song!

Jeff | 11/17/2008, 2:45 pm EST

Rock on.

Every song on the record that I’ve heard could be a single (why they chose the title track first is beyond me) but Better is truly a standout.

So uh, where’s the Axl RS cover?

Jay | 11/17/2008, 2:29 pm EST

Awesome track. I’m sold!

Brandon | 11/17/2008, 2:02 pm EST

The finished version of better sounds fantastic. Everything is mixed just right. It’s a great tune, very catchy, and has been a favorite among hard core fans since it first leaked in Feb 2006. Great choice for a second single!

matt | 11/17/2008, 1:53 pm EST

This is a great song. Why wasn’t this the first single? Much better than the title track.

Axl is back and this is the best rock single in years. This will bring GN’R back to the forefront of rock music.
