Could a Robert Plant-Free Led Zeppelin Tour Succeed?

11/13/08, 8:45 am EST

Last year’s Led Zeppelin reunion concert wasn’t the end for John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham — but it looks like it was for Robert Plant. The three musicians have been holding rehearsals with singers including Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler (it didn’t go well, one source has heard) and possibly Myles Kennedy, lead singer of Alter Bridge (who has covered Zep songs onstage and has a formidable vocal range). But Page wants to make one thing clear about the new project. “Whatever this is, it is not Led Zeppelin,” says a rep for Page’s management company, QPrime. “Not without the involvement of Robert Plant.”

But could a Plant-free tour make big bucks? Experts weigh in, in our new issue:

It might work if they get Sammy Hagar. :)

Anonymous | 11/13/2008, 9:43 am EST

Dear Jimmy Page. Release some live Zep recordings from the vault. That is the real Zep.

Skippy | 11/13/2008, 11:17 am EST

Yes – the Plant-free tour will still earn big bucks and sell out stadiums. There is no question about this.

No – it is not Led Zeppelin and it won’t be the same without Plant. However, a fill in for Plant is better than no tour at all. Fans are clamoring for a reunion and if Plant does not want to join, then the other members should proceed without him.

Joe | 11/13/2008, 11:18 am EST

So if Page says “Whatever this is, it’s not Led Zeppelin” then what are they going to play? Yardbirds? The Firm?

Anonymous | 11/13/2008, 11:26 am EST

They should get the BK Burger King guy… Nobody would be able to tell the difference between the King and Plant these days.

Sammy? Steven? NO WAY | 11/13/2008, 1:00 pm EST

If they got Sammy Hagar (and I’m a big Sammy fan) or Steven Tyler (likewise), the focal point would no longer be on the members of Led Zep.

Myles Kennedy, so far, is the best choice by virtue of the fact he is not a worldwide known vocalist like the aforementioned two are. This would allow the focus to remain on Page, Jones, and Bonham – as it should be.

And SCREW Robert Plant! What a JERK. One freakin’ tour with led Zep after 28 years is too much to ask of you? Give me a break. Get over yourself already.

stupid Led | 11/13/2008, 1:30 pm EST

,,,,,they had their time,,,,they are the masters of rock, but, give up on this tour/re-forming of the band. It is stupid. And screw the guy below who says “Screw Plant”. You are behond stupid, you damned idiot.

Thomas | 11/13/2008, 2:32 pm EST

They should get David Coverdale. Just to piss of Plant. haha…

Sam | 11/13/2008, 3:53 pm EST

No one compares to Plant, just like no one compares to Freddie Mercury.

AB | 11/13/2008, 4:53 pm EST

I agree with Sam. You can’t replace timeless singers like that. Didn’t work for Queen, and it certainly won’t work for Led Zeppelin.

mulejam | 11/13/2008, 5:49 pm EST

Myles Kennedy is the BEST voice in music right now! He sings Zep better than Robert at this point. Bring it on!!! Never enough good music anymore.

Queen | 11/13/2008, 6:58 pm EST

Is selling out stadiums and selling records again….something tells me that’s all they are worried about at this stage of the game.

Guitarist 9217 | 11/13/2008, 8:36 pm EST

i still dont think its been the same since John Bonham has been gone, i do think jason is an amazing replacement, but this will just end up like a failed version of Lynyrd Skynyrd rebuildings if this keeps happening.

rich | 11/13/2008, 10:46 pm EST

it wouldnt be the same without plant there, you cant replace plant with myles kennedy

Horsehair | 11/13/2008, 11:25 pm EST

I guess Robert Plant is just too old to ROCK anymore…..

Joseph | 11/14/2008, 2:26 pm EST

if they want it to sound original get David Coverdale, he did the Best Version of “In My Time Of Dying” with Page durng the 93 Coverdale/Page Tour , which prompted the 94-96 Page Plant Tours, Thank DC for those Tours they never would of Happened if David did not Kick the Crap out of all the Zep tunes played live and Make Percy very Green Eyed,

down2earth | 11/15/2008, 12:06 am EST

looks like the Zeppelin will go down in flames as they just don’t know when to quit…

Jimmy should turn a new page if Robert is being a plant and not moving anymore…

Anonymous | 11/16/2008, 7:25 pm EST

If they get Hagar I definitely won’t go!

Hey, stupid Led...... | 11/17/2008, 2:32 pm EST

When implying that someone else and their opinion is “stupid”, you may want to spell simple 1st Grade words like “beyond” correctly.

Just a suggestion there, Einstein.

And I'll say it again..... | 11/17/2008, 2:33 pm EST

….for good measure:

SCREW Robert Plant.

The amount of disrespect toward Robert Plant is unbelievable. Led Zeppelin ended in 1980 and no one else should ever use that name again. If Robert Plants wants to pursue other avenues, then that is his perogative.

What's in a name? | 11/21/2008, 3:38 pm EST

“Led Zeppelin ended in 1980 and no one else should ever use that name again.”

I’ll say this again, since some don’t seem to get it.

If that was the same mentality all bands had, the Stones would’ve been no more after Brian Jones….The Who would have been no more after Moon/Entwistle…same with Queen (Mercury). Black Sabbath, Journey, Boston, and Van Halen wouldn’t have gone on after switching vocalists. Those are some of the most influential bands of all-time, and they were supposed to just pack it all in because the original members aren’t a part of it anymore???

Dropping a band name just because someone dies or doesn’t want to tour under that name anymore is about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

And yes – it IS Plant’s perogative to turn it down, just as it should be the rest of the band’s perogative to continue on under the name LED ZEPPELIN without him.

I’d go cheerfully to an eventual concert of Led Zeppelin, but not without Robert Plant. It’s pointless to make half things. Fans would be illuded and the band wouldn’t sale so many tickets.

greg | 11/29/2008, 1:31 pm EST

Im wondering why it didnt go well with tyler? I think they should get britney spears to do it. wouldnt that be a hoot. Plant is doing what he wants to do and owes the public nothing more power to him. they are all shells of their former selves anyway. it wouldnt be good in my humble opinion. it would be like Willy Mays suiting up for the giants again. the 70’s are gone and if you wernt there sorry. it was a gas!

timmayy | 12/2/2008, 11:58 pm EST

Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant? LOL When Page and Plant toured in 1995 it was called just that, not Led Zeppelin as there was no JP Jones or J Bonham. Call it Platinum Blimp or.Steel Airship, but you can’t call it Led Zeppelin. I would never go, and I’ve owned every Zeppelin albim on 8 track, vinyl, cassette or cd.

ZEP REUNION WITH OUT PLANT??? WONT BE ZEPPELIN. AS FAR AS A REPLACEMENT FOR PLANT…. COVERDALE HAS THE HIGH VOCALS, BUT VERY DIFFERENT FROM PLANT. CLOSEST I HAVE HEARD IS THE LEAD SINGER FROM GREAT WHITE. THE MTV UNPLUGED VERSION HE DID OF BABE, IM GONNA LEAVE YOU WAS AWSOME.

Bartholemew Isshkabibbel | 12/6/2008, 7:58 pm EST

yo yo yo -it aint LZ without Plant dude, so all you morons that think otherwise, get real, know what I’ sayin- I am an accomplished Author, Playwright, Rapper & MC, so I know the Music Scene inside out, – we don’t want any replacements from YOUTUBE or American Idol, or Hojobs, it aint workin for these other groups -Journey, Yes, etc. & it aint gonna work here, that’s the bottom line cause Brutha J says so!

Tom | 12/16/2008, 5:15 pm EST

I saw Zep in ‘77 and they were killer, but it’s done. I wouldn’t go even if Robert was part of it. Spend the $ on some fresh music. Don’t look back!!

Of course the tour would be better with Robert Plant, but guys take what you can get! Jimmy Page is an incredible show all to himself! Just imagine when he does an extended violin bow solo at center stage! Now add the sonic brick wall of John Paul Jones! The thunder of Bonham. How could any idiot pass on what could be their last or indeed only chance to see the world’s greatest guitarist and bassist perform before their eyes!
As for Robert Plant, he should stop and consider what a even a small percentage of the $200,000,000 he has been offered could do for causes he has championed such as autism. Very few of us have such an opportunity to do so much good. And who really cares if he can hit the notes? He can just stand there and smile and the fans will still go crazy! It’s a party not an opera remember! Instead of 5 nights at The Garden, one at the Meadowlands. Instead of 5 nights at the Forum, one at The Coliseum. One only at Soldier Field. etc. Play back to back on weekends this summer with The Stones and share the P.A. Come on Robert do it for the kids!

Who cares if plant acts like a spoiled brat and can’t make it. To me it’s Jimmy Page who always carried the group and still does
with his magic hands………

Plant is all done….just take a look at the way he takes care of himself…….. a washed up wimp

Phil | 12/21/2008, 7:20 pm EST

Why not do something similar to The Doors episode of Storytellers? Pick several different lead singers to cover Plant’s part – would come up with some very interesting takes on classic tunes. I’d go given the right line-up.

Best Band Ever | 12/21/2008, 11:00 pm EST

Don’t be ignorant and listen to some of these morons. He (Plant) is still well on top of his game (just listen to the 02 arena show recordings of Kashmir and Ramble on of two great examples of the ledgends work) as available on You Tube. He wants to rest his voice after the Krause tour. Let him do this and then let’s hope he makes the right decision for his fans. I have seen them live together and solo and they are still the top band of all time.

James MacGregor | 12/23/2008, 9:41 pm EST

So Robert doesn’t want to lose Alison and she doesn’t want him around all those groupies by himself, and she doesn’t want to sit around backstage waiting on him? Solution simple: Take her along! Imagine the beautiful duet they could perform on Battle of Evermore, no one has ever done Sandy Denny justice since her mysterious passing. How beautiful That’s The Way could be if Robert and Alison alternated verses and sang the harmonies together with John on guitar and Jimmy on pedal-steel. Tangerine sung together in two part harmony, and closing out the “acoustic set” with the folksy Bron-y-aur Stomp. Perhaps even a special version of Down By The Seaside or Ten Years Gone. This would give the band a mid-concert break and the audience a longer, more fulfilling concert. But then again it would be understandable if Alison couldn’t take the pressure of such enormous audiences, as she’s used to playing in such tiny places for such small crowds. But if she could pull it off, millions of fans being exposed to her vocal talents, and being an integral part of the biggest reunion in rock history, would be good for everybody! Better to be known as the sweetheart who helped make the fans dreams come true, than the sour stigma that Yoko Oh No! heaped upon herself by breaking up The Beatles.

Ryan | 12/29/2008, 1:08 pm EST

@hogleg: It’s honestly looking more and more like Sammy Hagar. Especially since Stephen Tyler allegedly blew it with the try-out.

Honestly. Plant needs to stop being a pain in the ass, and just do this final tour w/ Zeppelin. I don’t understand why he’s turning down an opportunity to make millions.

LedHed | 1/8/2009, 1:16 pm EST

It isn’t Led Zeppelin even with Plant! Without John Bonham it just isn’t gonna be the same. No disrespect to Jason, but the Zeppelin of old is no more. I was too young to see them Live, and I would jump at the opportunity to see them in concert (Page, Plant, Jones, and Bonham Jr.). But I know deep down that its not gonna be the same super band that it was when they were in their prime.
I truly hope that some time in the future that there will be a Zeppelin tour that includes the 3.5 surviving members.

LedHed | 1/8/2009, 1:21 pm EST

As far as this Hagar crap is concerned, I think they would loose a lotta respect if Sammy fronts the tour. Sammy is in NO way a good fit.
Hell he wasn’t even a good fit for Van Halen!

Dan | 1/8/2009, 3:02 pm EST

You are kidding aren’t you. Led Zeppelin touring without Robert Plant would be like the Beatles touring without Lennon and McCartney.

Dan | 1/8/2009, 3:02 pm EST

Matt | 1/13/2009, 11:35 pm EST

its a tough thing, plant has made his name and paid his dues so technically he can do what he pleases but what he pleases ruines any chance the younger gen gets at seeing something close to led zeppelin. obviously the zep of 77 is a thing of the past but due to events out of my control i wasnt born yet. the least plant can do is jump abord and allow the generartion of now hear a show worthy of the name led zeppelin. without the youth the band once had and its fearless original drummer it wont ever be the mighty zep, but it would be as close as i could ever get and it would be a dream come true.

Kimmy | 1/15/2009, 12:22 pm EST

Plant unavailable? Two words: PERRY FARRELL

John | 1/15/2009, 12:25 pm EST

Jack White? Only problem with that is: the guy can’t sing. And he would be replacing the greatest voice in Rock ‘n Roll. Someone on this board suggested Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction. Not the greatest singer, but that could actually work…

Anonymous | 2/22/2009, 1:38 pm EST

Oliver Lodge | 3/8/2009, 10:32 pm EST

Anybody who has gotten a hold of the 02 bootleg dvd set going around knows the truth about Robert Plant’s current abilities: He’s not what he used to be. HE’S F*&%ING MORE INCREDIBLE THAN HE EVER WAS!!! That utube stuff doesn’t begin to do this performance justice. I brought it home, hooked it up to my big screen, cranked it up, and was blown away!!! CRUSHING THUNDER! INCREDIBLE AMBIENCE! ABSOLUTELY MONSTROUS! A SERIES OF NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS! Plant front and center hits the mike at 8:20 and doesn’t let up until 11:30! In My Time Of Dying is bone crushing and sent a chill up my spine! It’s unbelievable what a wall of amplifiers Jimmy has, All turned all the way up. You can put ANYBODY up there, no matter how young, how fast, or how evil, Page and Jones will absolutely evicerate them. No not on articulation, not on sense of dynamics, not on artistic merit: But On POWER!!! NAKED MERCILESS FORCE!!! Led Zeppelin are the KINGS OF HEAVY METAL! They invented it. They perfected it. All these other copycats are a pathetic joke when Zeppelin hits the stage. And the mightiest and most powerful vocalist of them all is ROBERT PLANT! Physically speaking nobody can match him, not then, not now. He’s got the biggest voice on the planet, Pavarotti included! For Your Life kicks total ass! Plant wails on harmonica on Nobody’s Fault But Mine. Jason Bonham is unbelievable on The Song Remains The Same. You need to hear this on a great sound system to really appreciate him. Unfortunately Dazed and Confused has been cut in half. It offers only a tease of what it could be, but what’s there is bombastic. If Led Zeppelin were to tour this summer, one could imagine them loosening up as things went along, and adding more and more to this opus eventually regaining its full length and ultimately surpassing what it has ever been before. How many of us grew up in the movie theater being transported by this thing thinking it was never going to end and never wanting it to. But it is Kashmir that does the most damage. Jason having played it since boyhood pounds home the surrealistic experience that takes over when the huge projected rectangular columns slowly twist into the object. And Whole Lotta Love is absolutely raucous! The largest video screen ever used at a concert goes crazy, Page blatantly bangs on all six open strings, and Plant screams like a banshee as the entire house is brought down. If this boot is as good as it is, God only knows how good the official release will be when Jimmy gets done with it. Maybe that’s why Robert is stalling to give Jimmy time to mix this thing. But nothing will equal the frenetic excitement of a new Zeppelin album. Jimmy has been stockpiling material for more than a decade now, it’s up to Robert to interpret it, Jones to arrange it, and Jason to hammer it out. Sulphur, Salt, and Mercury, Crowned by Heavenly Alchemy!

nickstud | 3/17/2009, 12:49 pm EST

I think they should get a teenager (or someone very young) who looks pretty good. That way they could get screaming teenage girls to their concert and the band won’t have to sound that good. (Of course he would have to sing decently).

You Can Do It Robert! | 3/25/2009, 10:51 pm EST

C’mon Robert. You can do it. Go heavy metal again. C’mon you can do it.

ZoSo & % @ | 4/27/2009, 11:43 pm EST

Why is Robert Plant so critical of the repetition in Led Zeppelin’s music. It’s there for a reason you know. That unnecessarily complex overly intricate stuff, it’s all been done before, and the result is a complete snore. Zeppelin’s music has always been a perfect meld of the physical and intellectual. Music doesn’t solve difficult physics problems, it’s to be enjoyed, that’s it’s function. But come to think of it Einstein’s greatest discovery was the simple E=mc2. Jimmy Page easily mastered Calculus and Trigonometry in grammer school, and was recently awarded his Ph.D.
It’s an insult to insinuate that he has not the ability to write a pretentious non-repetitive piece of music. There are at least a thousand changes in full-length Dazed and Confused. My god, where are their ears? Repetition is delibrately intended in rock music
to create hypnotic trances, and Page was the master of this. During Achilles Last Stand repetitive rythms are used to create incredible tension which is finally relieved by Jimmy’s staggering solos. It also allows the the listener to concentrate on its masterful lyrics. My god what does Plant intend to do, put “The Highwayman” to music? Are Plant & Krause going to re-record the entire “Sounds of Silence” LP? They’re even starting to “look” like Simon & Garfunkel. Come back to Zeppelin Robert. Speaking of musical limitations, sure Krause can do the mellow-melancholiac thing very well, but that’s only one style, going one pace. If she’s responsible for Robert’s new musical snobbery, she should listen to Clarkson, she can do it all – kind of like Robert when he’s in Led Zeppelin.

Whispering Wind | 5/19/2009, 5:11 pm EST

Robert Plant has never, ever let his fans down. In the end he’ll give them that last great Zeppelin tour and album. Such is the will of Emperor Tiberius and the people of Rome.

Into the sun from south to north, flocks of birds have flown.

I used to pockect, sometimes I’d roll it, I always knew what it was for.

And as we wind on down the road, our shadows taller than our souls,
The truth will come to us at last.

“Your mother wouldn’t like it: LED ZEPPELIN!”

Robert Plant = Ebineezer Scrooge. PERIOD!

Rick | 6/7/2009, 4:54 pm EST

The real Robert Plant is nothing but a rutty two-bit Janis Joplin impersonator, and we miss him. Kelly Clarkson is the apple of every generation’s eye. Stone should sign a six cover deal. Led Zeppelin shall surely return. O2 was incredible. Never give up hope!

Ben | 6/14/2009, 4:49 pm EST

I just saw The Song Remains The Same on VH1 Saturday night, AND I’M PUMPED! C’mon Robert give us one more! LED ZEPPELIN RULES!

Toby Bancroft | 7/3/2009, 4:17 pm EST

How can Robert possibly say or believe the reunuion tour wouldn’t live up to expectations?
O2 was so fucking hot, and the fans of course understand the age obstacle. Simply admit it, you’ve put a piece of ass before the happiness of millions; but then again that’s what Zeppelin was all about anyway.
