XM and Sirius Merge Stations: Eminem, Bob Dylan, Howard Stern Survive

11/12/08, 5:15 pm EST

XM and Sirius satellite radio stations merged today. Each sides’ premium channels and talent mostly stayed intact, with stations like Howard Stern, the Grateful Dead Channel and Eminem’s Shade 45 all making the jump to XM users, while Sirius listeners acquire Bob Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour, Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure and B.B. King’s namesake blues station. Many of the themed genre stations, however, were either axed or assimilated into one station. For instance, Sirius’ college rock mainstay Left of Center is done, replaced by XM’s similar XMU. The by-the-decades stations are now categorized as “’60s on 6,” “’70s on 7,” etc. A pair of Rock Daily’s favorite Sirius stations, Lithium and First Wave, thankfully managed to survive, while XM’s alt-rock trio of stations Fred, Ethel and Lucy learned their satellite days are over.

I listened to RS’s own Jenny Eliscu on Left of Center, and other DJ’s, and thought that was a great channel for indie and up-and-coming new bands. I guess Jenny will now need a full time job at RS?

Beyond Jazz is Gone | 11/12/2008, 11:49 pm EST

Beyond Jazz was a great channel and why I had two subscriptions to XM, one for the road and one at home with a better receiver. Russ Davis and crew on Beyond Jazz routinely found great new music I could not find otherwise. They mixed it with classic jazz fusion and for me it was auto-nirvana. I’ll be dropping at least one subscription, perhaps two. The merger was supposed to offer more choices, I see fewer. Is the FCC watching?

jenny is on XMU now, i believe.

loved left of center- upset it’s gone. XMU sucks in comparison.

anyone know what channel dylan’s theme time radio hour’s on on sirius?

Can anyone tell me how I can find Dylan’s THEME TIME station on Sirius?

coolbreeze | 11/21/2008, 10:32 pm EST

I have been slightly disappointed with some of the increased chatter of DJs since the merger. However, I do like 80’s music sometimes and I like the old MTV VJs additions and find the mix of music more appealing than before the merger. Keep BPM like it is, make more channels like Pink and Groove and you will keep me coming back for renewal of subscription

What happened to “Frank’s Place” (#853) on DirecTV? I listened to that about 75% of the time. GONE!! I called both DirecTV and XM and spoke with much younger people at both places who had no idea of what was going on, and neither were even aware of this station. It is still on straight XM Radio as “Seriously Sinatra”, but it is GONE from DirecTV. Many thousands of older people are just forgotten in this unbelievable move.

a classic example of how a merger does NOT enhance the product.

What happened to channel 853 on Directv?

Chasman | 12/1/2008, 3:25 pm EST

I think you mean 25 cents. 25 cents, or a quarter of a dollar, can be shown as $.25, .25 dollars, or 25 cents. It is not .25 cents, since that is one quarter of a penny. Is that hard for you?

do away with soul town and return soul street and dj’s

Londonjack | 12/2/2008, 6:41 pm EST

High Standards,#853 is gone, as is its predecessor (Singers & Standards), which was even better! I say let’s sue the bastards for breach of contract!
(Was Frank’s Place the original station name?)

I am in my late 30’s… so some of us middle-aged people liked High Standards 853 too.

I guess they just even ask their customers what they want!

Bring back High Standards!

The main reason I subscribed to XM radio was that it had a FOLK MUSIC radio station. The only folk music we get on radio in NH is on Sunday night on public radio. Imagine my chagrin when I tuned to the FOLK RADIO channel over a month ago and heard, instead of folk music, an announcement that the FOLK RADIO channel would be off the air until Dec 26. That pissed me off, but I patiently awaited its return…. By my calendar it is now December 27 and I can’t even find a channel 15, let alone a FOLK RADIO channel. And no word from XM Radio regarding what is going on!!! If I had submitted a check (which is a promise to pay) to XM and the check bounced, XM would be “all over me”. But it is fine with them to charge us for services without providing them on into the indefinite future. Moreover there are many Country stations and rock stations on XM and commercial radio. For XM to eliminate the only FOLK station would be a travesty! If this station does not return soon I will cancel my subscription. BIG THANKS TO THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION’S FCC FOR APPROVING A MERGER OF THE ONLY 2 SATELLITE RADIO STATIONS IN THIS COUNTRY!

IF THEY(XM&SIRIUS} MERGED.
WHY CAN’T WE, THE CUSTOMERS ADD AN ADDITION RADIO TO OUR ALREADY EXISTING ACCOUNTS. WHEN YOU TRY ADD A RADIO TO THE ACCOUNT , THEY SAY “YOU CAN’T BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT ADD A XM RADIO TO A SIRIUS ACCOUNT”. WHY CANT THE MERGER BENIFIT THE CUSTOMER.?
