Smashing Pumpkins Taunt Audience With “James Iha” Outburst

We thought that maybe the Smashing Pumpkins would aim to be more fan-friendly after being told by the crowd that their two-night stop in NYC “sucked,” but we were wrong. Billy Corgan’s assault on audience members continued last night in Washington, D.C. Following the band’s painstaking rendition of Pink Floyd’s “Set The Control for the Heart of the Sun,” one fan near the front gave Corgan the double middle finger treatment. Corgan took issue with it, of course, and asked why the audience member was dissatisfied. The man replied something along the line that the band “no longer rocks” and then wondered where James Iha was. This prompted Corgan to bring a female audience member onstage and referred to her as “James Iha,” then asked the faux-Iha what she’s been up to. Corgan reportedly also went on to rant about how he hasn’t sold out in 20 years. Perhaps an omen for the evening, fans entering the venue were greeted by a motorcycle accident. The Pumpkins will also perform in D.C. tonight, so get the camera-phones ready for some more Corgan theatrics.

Anybody who gives their hard earned money to this guy is an idiot.

roknrol188 | 11/12/2008, 5:10 pm EST

Having been at that show last night, Billy Corgan seemed pretty happy inciting and mocking his fans. He considers “selling out” as playing the songs people want to hear. Wow, Billy, I didn’t really I paid money to see you waste time and make unrecognizeable gibberish-type music on stage. I still enjoy their records but I will never pay to see them live again. Corgan’s ego is way too big.

Jeff | 11/12/2008, 5:22 pm EST

Although Billy Corgan is definitely being nominated for Douche of the Year, people need to recognize that the only thing Iha and Wretzky ever contributed to a Pumpkins record were their pictures in the CD booklets.

Joe | 11/12/2008, 7:08 pm EST

Jeff, I am totally on board with your assessment. There are tons of people who seems to view the “original lineup” of their band of choice (see GNR, the Who, Led Zep, etc etc) as sacrosanct and untouchable, and that the remaining members have no right to use the band name. Hogwash. Yes, Billy Corgan is a jerk. In many ways, so is Axl Rose. Right now, Billy’s being called out for being an idiot, and rightfully so. No need to bring up easily replaceable former band members to try and defend your case that a concert sucks. Hopefully Axl’s record and tour will rub a little salt in that argument. Chinese Democracy, by the way, is a pretty fucking good rock record. Billy, you aren’t a comedian. Don’t open yourself up to being heckled.

Zenfuego | 11/12/2008, 8:14 pm EST

Caught an early glimpse of this- saw them on the Mellon Collie tour in Portland- had hard to get floor GA tix, but a fan died on the tour, and Billy said no more GA on the floor. This was the Grunge era for God’s sake- not the only death at a show in that time by a long shot! We get to the show, only to find that our floor GA tix had been re assigned WAAAAAAY up the side of the hall- at the Pumpkins behest. Billy, Billy, Billy, you once wrote great songs . . . but you are no Kurt Cobain . . . I remember what Courtney said about the ridiculous opulence of the Pumpkins tour versus Nirvana’s- that’s not selling out? Guess you were more metal than punk anyway . . .

Cielo | 11/13/2008, 1:13 am EST

Someone needs to remind Billy that the 90’s are way over and he’s no longer the biggest rock star there is.

parramore | 11/13/2008, 8:42 am EST

hahaha….he sounds pissed that he has no career left and that his “band” blows. Once again Billy…get over yourself…pick up the phone…get the real band back together and you will find much more respect on stage. I hate it when lead singers think that they are the band…they are not

Joe | 11/13/2008, 9:48 am EST

Well, let’s be honest…if someone is going to attend the show and yell out, repeatedly, “Where’s Iha?
and “You Suck”…they are the idiots…not Corgan. This supposed fan has no idea. Everyone seems to love to hate on this band. If you don’t like them, or don’t like the revived Smashing Pumpkins…don’t go to their shows and leave it be.

DirtyElvis | 11/13/2008, 10:31 am EST

I find it hypocritical that you’ll attack BC for his actions, because any fan of SP that pays money to go to their show should know that they’re never going to just sit there and play all their singles all night long.
There’s a HUGE difference between a “band playing their songs live” and “musical ARTISTS performing” and until you can differentiate between the two, keep your comments about whether his career is over to yourself, because he’s still pulling in more money that you’ll ever see, and will never have to go back to working a desk job or flipping burgers.
As for him insulting the fan. I say good for him. Just because he paid money to get in the door doesn’t mean he gets to interrupt and ruin other people’s enjoyment of the show. That’s akin to paying money to get into an art museum and criticizing a painting in front of the artist who did it just because you personally don’t like the color blue he used.

Finished | 11/13/2008, 12:08 pm EST

If the band sucks that night and you yell “you suck” there’s nothing wrong with that. Same as if a football team is not playing well. Yelling “Where’s Iha” is dumb, I’ll agree.

Sanchez | 11/13/2008, 1:23 pm EST

Kudos to Billy for not completely killing the audience by digging into the ADORE catalogue.

stupid Pumpkin Fans | 11/13/2008, 1:37 pm EST

People who buy Pumpkin tickets thinking that they are gonna get the Pumpkins of the past are just plain stupid. Just listen to your old cd’s and be happy. Screaming “you suck” is even “stupider”. Just plain stupid.

Siamese Gish | 11/13/2008, 1:37 pm EST

Billy Corgan is a whiney little bitch who should have broke the band up after the second album. He isn’t that good of a guitarist, either

Bill | 11/13/2008, 6:08 pm EST

Saw the pumpkins in 1996. Second worst concert I ever saw. Live was the worst. There were a lot of really bad bands in the 90’s. Guys who couldn’y play used to make disparaging remarks about guys who could.

Ponder Woman | 11/13/2008, 6:37 pm EST

Don’t you think its a good idea to CATER to your fans, instead of trying to drive them away? Just a thought. If you suck, you suck. No two ways around it.

bleeblarblar | 11/13/2008, 6:52 pm EST

Billy, regroup yourself before you totally self-implode.

Learn how to have fun playing your songs again.

Iron Balls | 11/14/2008, 4:25 pm EST

Someone needs to remind Billy Corgan that he’s a melon head.

Deiter | 11/16/2008, 5:16 am EST

It sounds like The Pumpkins are a different band now. The fact that Corgan still calls the band The Pumpkins might be arrogance–as if the other members hadn’t made significant contributions–and judging from the response, some feel the name is a misrepresentation: Fair enough. On the other hand, changing the direction of the band is an artistic decision with merit. He’s not the same person now, certainly his writing has changed, so why pretend it’s the same band? It’s a risk for Corgan and it’s pretty clear it’s a risk he’s willing to take–though he does seem a little surprised by the reaction. (Dylan was booed when he went electric, not that Corgan is a Dylan by any means.) It’s probably inevitable that he’ll lose some fans along the way. More power to him. I, like many, could care less at this point. But that’s me.

.. | 12/5/2008, 6:59 pm EST

Stupid things like this happen every now and then… Who cares who was wrong and who was the ass-whole.

DuskJenn | 12/9/2008, 12:30 am EST

Well I went to the Wednesday show in D.C. and I was blown away by Billy’s artistry. He played a great mix of the old hits and some of his more obscure songs. The band seemed to be in a good mood and the vibe was good and overall the concert was amazing. I think whoever was taunting Billy wasn’t a true fan.

buffalo bill | 1/13/2009, 6:18 am EST

theres no point in playing all the radio favorites 1979,today etc that gets boring.
i want to hear new things as well
i think a true pumpkins fan wouldnt go to a concert and yell wheres iha
that was just stupidity
its the new pumpkins and as ive found playing with new people it takes time to truly gel

Rock and Radical | 2/11/2009, 4:10 am EST

fuck, i’m clueless..

Anonymous | 2/25/2009, 3:27 pm EST

James Iha is now in a Band with one of the Hanson Bros.

*Pukes*

mikemLBI | 3/11/2009, 8:42 am EST

no sellout?! didnt i just hear TODAY on a VISA credit card commercial? also, if you put out music, and get people to pay to see you play, be prepared for feedback. most people are in bands for the attention, just get used to the fact that a lot of it will be *constructive*.

Taylor | 3/11/2009, 3:01 pm EST

To be sure, you don’t go to a Pumpkins concert today and heckle Corgan about the missing band members; you’re asking for either Corgan himself or a Corgan defender to pick a fight with you. However, Corgan’s decision to interrupt the concert and respond to this fan was idiotic, and his mean-spirited skit about Iha has only solidified my opinion that Corgan is a colossal, arrogant jerk.

D'arcy | 3/20/2009, 7:38 pm EST

boys play nice!

poughkeepsiejohn | 3/23/2009, 9:27 pm EST

“Where’s Iha?” Well, ask an asshole question, you get an asshole answer.

Moot point | 6/10/2009, 3:51 pm EST

This mirrors an incident that occurred in 2002 when Guns N Roses performed and a fan yelled out “Where’s Slash?” and Axl answered “Where’s Slash? He’s in my ass, that’s where Slash is!” I could not help but think about that when I read this story, no wonder people have been making a habit of comparing Billy to Axl. I mean, they have so much in common, they both had difficult and traumatic upbringings, both of them share the first name William, and both of them share the inability of keeping their bands intact. Oh yeah, and they also think they’re God.

Angel | 7/22/2009, 11:52 pm EST

Who the fuck buys tickets to a show just to piss and moan about the band not being there? People need to move on with their lives, SP did and everyone else wants to remember losing their virginity to 1979 or some cool acid trip they had while listening to Starla. To them I say grow up because Smashing Pumpkins never belonged to any of you. Billy’s songs are ALL that is on every album, and if you aren’t happy with the way the band evolves than fuck off.

MOONKID | 7/30/2009, 10:26 am EST

TO THOSE GIVING THE BAND BULLSHIT….GO FUCK YOUR MOTHERS. THE PUMPKINS REVOLVED AROUND BILLY FROM THE START AND WILL WHEN THEY FINISH. BY FAR THE BEST BAND OF THE 90′S. AND HE CAN PLAY GUITAR AS WELL AS ANYBODY WHO ARE YOU FOOLIN? HE MAY NOT PLEASE EVERYONE BUT PLAYIN THE SAME SONGS OVER AND OVER WOULD SUCK NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE. GIVE EM A BREAK, ALOT HAS HAPPENED AND ITS NOT ALL HIS FAULT. IF YOU KNEW ANYTHING, YOU WOULD REALIZE JAMES IHA IS THE REASON THE BAND BROKE UP, NOW HE IS PLAYIN WITH THE GIRL FROM HANSON SO WHO HAS IT BETTER-WHO ROCKS MORE-WHO IS COOLER-YADA YADA
BILLY AT LEAST KEEPS ROCK AND ROLL ALIVE AND IF YOU DONT GET IT YOU NEVER WILL SO GO BUY A STAINED ALBUM TO LISTEN TO WHILE YOU FUCK YOUR MOTHER-

BillyCorgan'sLover | 8/28/2009, 4:46 pm EST

Billy Corgan is and always will be A GOD OF MUSIC. Stop being bitches, and accept that the music has changed. ¬¬

The Leech | 9/15/2009, 8:27 pm EST

To BILL:

you saw the Pumpkins in 1996 and didn’t like it. You moron. I should have brrn the one to have that possibility!

CornBobBlues | 10/21/2009, 12:14 am EST

I’m a fan of Pumpkins aka Billy on Twitter and watch all their updates, which are about one every hour. I love reading and watching their posts.
