Bob Dylan Makes Pilgrimage to Neil Young’s Childhood Home

Earlier this month Winnipeg Residents John Kiernan and Patti Regan came home from buying groceries to find Bob Dylan waiting in front of their home. Like many before him, Dylan (in town for a concert) had come to see the childhood home of Neil Young. The couple — accustomed to rock fans making a pilgrimage — didn’t recognize Dylan at first. “I’m looking around, and I realize, this guy having a tuque on has really great cowboy boots on,” Kiernan said. “He was wearing really nice leather pants. And I realize I’m staring face-to-face with Bob Dylan.”

Dylan talked to the couple for about 25 minutes. They took him to Young’s old bedroom — where their 16-year-old daughter currently resides. “[Dylan said] ‘OK, so this was his view, and this was where he listened to his music,’ ” said Kiernan. Last year Dylan talked to Rolling Stone about Young. “Neil is very sincere,” said Dylan. “He’s sincere, and he’s got a God-given talent, with that voice of his, and the melodic strain that runs through absolutely everything he does.
He could be at his most thrashy, but it’s still going to be elevated by some melody. Neil’s the only one who does that. There’s nobody in his category.”

Wouldn’t it be time to have Neil on the cover of Rolling Stone and an in-depth interview with the man. His fall tour must rank amongst his best, and his sometime to arrive Archives Vol. 1 should be enough reason to have him, don’t you think?

Yes, but he was on the cover just a few months ago, yes?

I guess Dylan’s words about Neil says it all. Neil is the greatest.

Hi, I’m an old friend of neil and timmy Mulligans from 4 corners, and i have always loved how Bob Dylan loves Neil, and Neil loves Bob Dylan. Just like Bob Dylan, i love to see where people I admire and love grew up, where their first song was written or first painting painted. When Bob says that Neil is sincere, he is right on the money. Humbley sincere, and to be so soft and so thrash hard at the same time as always keeping a sweet melody, I couldn’t agree with him more on all of that, Bob and Neil are my ultimate favorite singer songwriters, and Joni Mitchell who is also from Canada like Neil. Sure is neat to get to see Neil’s first home ! THANX Bob!!! Love and Peace,

Bob & Neil could have gone on to get proper jobs. Neil would possibly have made a good Housing Officer (like my bother, Martin). And Bob would have been a very interesting taxi-driver, with thankfully very little to say, I suspect. But his eye for detail (& maps) would have been second to hardly any. Thank goodness they didn’t get those proper jobs..
