David Byrne Can’t Vote But Hopes You Will

David Byrne has asked his fans to vote on this Election Day, partially because the former Talking Head can’t vote himself. “I am an immigrant with a Green Card and, therefore, I am not eligible to vote in a federal election,” Byrne said in an email to fans. “FYI – I can get drafted…I pay taxes, yet I cannot vote for President.” Still, if Byrne could vote, it’s pretty obvious who he’d cast his vote for. “The Republicans have made us less safe than before 9/11, bankrupted this economy, started an illegal war they can’t – and don’t intend to – finish, removed what sympathy (after 9/11) and respect the world had for the US, and have robbed US citizens of many of their basic rights,” Byrne writes. “Global warming? What’s that? Science and education? Investment in our future? No, thanks – we’ll stick with a good ‘ole hockey mom.” Byrne is optimistic, though he adds, “it ain’t over until Florida.” Check out the full text of the letter below.

I Can’t, But You Can

Pardon the bulk mailing. I Can’t Vote. I am an immigrant with a Green Card and, therefore, I am not eligible to vote in a federal election. FYI – I can get drafted (luckily, Daniel Berrigan burned my draft board’s records) and I pay taxes, yet I cannot vote for President. On Election Day, I see my neighbors heading to the nearby elementary school to cast their ballots. The voting booth joint is a great leveler; the whole neighborhood – rich, poor, old, young, decrepit and spunky – they all turn out in one day.

But most of you can vote. What can I say? The Republicans have made us less safe than before 9/11, bankrupted this economy, started an illegal war they can’t – and don’t intend to – finish, removed what sympathy (after 9/11) and respect the world had for the US, and have robbed US citizens of many of their basic rights. Global warming? What’s that? Science and education? Investment in our future? No, thanks – we’ll stick with a good ‘ole hockey mom. Ignorant, and fucking proud of it, as is always the case.

Although it looks like a shoo-in, it ain’t over ’til Florida. And there are plenty of racists in this country who will vote against their own best interests. So please, get to your local elementary school, post office, town hall, or whatever, and cast your vote and make this a country we can all be proud of. We can get out of this mess, and life can be better than it is.

Ok… Come on David… I am a big fan but this statement is just ridiculous… The people who act like they are the least racist, are more racist than everyone else… i mean

“there are plenty of racists in this country who will vote against their own best interests.”

I hate the fact that just because i am not voting for Obama, I am a racist. It really is just an insult and shows just how stupid a comment that is when i confess the fact that i am MARRIED to a African American. I mean come on…. i can’t not vote for Obama without being a racist? It can’t be because i think that His Pro-Abortions stance is awful? Because i dont agree with his “Universal Healthcare” plan? or because i dont think his “Redistribution of Wealth” tax plan should even be considered any thing other than punishing successful people for being wealthy and forcing them to look into other options in other countries that are much more tax friendly???

Answer: NO… it couldn’t be for any of these reasons… it is strictly because i am a racist… This has pretty much been the entire theme of this election… it doesn’t matter where i go, who i talk to… if i am not voting for Obama i am a racist. It really has just gotten old.

I respect that you support what Obama stands for and i wish that you were able to make your voice heard with a vote… Instead of calling anyone who doesn’t vote for him a racist.

Dear David,

shut up and sing.

“And there are plenty of racists in this country who will vote against their own best interests.”

And there are plenty others who will vote against Obama because he’s less qualified than Sarah Palin. I thought David Byrne was smarter than that.

Besides, I’m voting against Obama’s white half, so I’m not racist.

“The people who act like they are least racist are more racist than anyone else.”
Huh? Actually, those who point out the ugly racist streak that still exists in this country are, in fact, not racist.
In any case, we get the point – you’re not a racist. You are, however, an idiot.

Thanks for deciding what is in my own interest, David. What a pompous statement. How idiotic to suggest that the only valid reason why one might vote against a radical liberal with no executive experience whatsoever is race. Stick to making records for your tens of fans.

nice to get an idea of who still reads R$S, bleak

Wow. There are a lot of ugly comments on this thread. Byrne is not saying if you didn’t vote for Obama you were a racist; he’s recognizing a VERY OBVIOUS fact. Racism and bigotry are still alive in this country, and, yes, some people did vote according to their predjudices. BUT … President Obama. It’s historic, and wonderful, and amazing. And not one of these absurd, negative comments can change that fact :)

And Obama would say: “Byrne – you look TOO OLD to be a rock star!”

Who knew Byrne was like Michael Moron; happy to suck the money out of our country but too critical to take citizenship.

Hey David, how’s that dope and strange working out for US, huh?

I have to go burn all his records now.
