Springsteen, Jay-Z, Reznor, Doors’ Densmore Make Last Minute Election Pushes

With Election Day technically underway with early voting going down in 25 states, musicians continue to throw some last-minute support to Barack Obama. In the battleground of Ohio, Bruce Springsteen appeared with Obama at a rally, saying “I don’t know about you, but I want my country back, I want my dream back, I want my America back! Now is the time to stand with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, roll up our sleeves, and come.” In the swing state of Pennsylvania, Jay-Z, Diddy and
Mary J. Blige all spoke at the Vote Block party in Philadelphia this morning with the hope of swaying some of those undecided voters. “Things are about to change,” Diddy told the packed crowd at the rally. Obama’s running mate Joe Biden will also be in Philadelphia tonight, campaigning with Jimmy Rollins of the World Series-winning Phillies. And in this YouTube video, Doors drummer John Densmore announced his support of Barack Obama. “I met Barack Obama when my group Tribal Jazz played a rally about a year ago, I was impressed with how genuine he was,” Densmore says. “So, please vote, and if you can, vote Democratic.”

Also, Nine Inch Nails‘ Trent Reznor got in on the action with an e-mail sent to the NIN mailing list, pleading with his fans to vote, regardless of who they prefer. “This election offers a choice is between two men with dramatically different visions of the future. We have strong feelings about this choice,” Reznor writes without revealing who he’s actually voting for (though considering he once wrote an anti-Bush concept album, it seems pretty obvious). Read the entire text of Reznor’s message below:

Trent Reznor’s Letter to Fans:
Next Tuesday we will elect the next President of the United States. The result will have great consequences for the nation.

This election offers a choice is between two men with dramatically different visions of the future. We have strong feelings about this choice. But we feel even more strongly that all Americans, regardless of political preference, have a stake in the outcome and should vote in this critical election.

This is likely to be a close election. Your vote matters. Please use it and make a difference.

Sincerely,
Trent Reznor

sip it real slow!

frank rizzo | 11/3/2008, 11:44 am EST

more dopey musicians and non-musicians (rappers) spewing their uneducated opionions on the general public.
shut up and entertain us!

Chuck U | 11/3/2008, 11:52 am EST

Reznor is a coward for not voicing his support of Obama. Probably afraid of losing his Republcian fans.

sammo | 11/3/2008, 1:26 pm EST

i think it’s great he’s not telling us who to vote for. i don’t need someone to do that. he’s just saying we should go ahead and vote, which is the most educated thing u can say. heck, more people will listen to these celebrities than anyone else. it’s a little messed up that people can come in here and bash reznor.

Paul | 11/3/2008, 3:27 pm EST

It is cool he is not telling us who to vote for. Most people are put off by entertainers speaking about their political affiliations. Make up your own minds.

Anonymous | 11/3/2008, 3:59 pm EST

I dont get why musicians think they are so great by being politically active.

half of america thinks musicians are losers that are full of themselves.

if anyone is influenced by a musician to vote for Obama they are pretty pathetic.
Musicians are just as washed up as Obama.
They only care about themselves and how they are “going to change the world.”
B.S.

get a grip America.

“Musicians are just as washed up as Obama”

Probably one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read in my life, and it’s sad that someone like that is going to be allowed to vote.

I didn’t know winning election for President makes you washed up..GET A CLUE!

Also, musicians make themselves heard because some of them feel like people will listen so why not try to use your influence in a positive way?!

Music Guy | 11/3/2008, 4:43 pm EST

It’s funny because the two groups of people that are the furthest removed from reality are politicians and celebrities.

Music Guy | 11/3/2008, 4:45 pm EST

And yet these same two groups of people spend a significant amount of time trying to convince you they’re just like you (when they need something from you). Nothing could be further from the truth.

musicians are people and have as much right as anyone to have opionions.who told joe the fake plumber he should run his mouth?

Why would you bash Reznor for not telling us who to vote for? A person who cares about our country, but cares enough to respect different opinions. There’s a shocker!

Anonymous | 11/3/2008, 4:59 pm EST

““I don’t know about you, but I want my country back, I want my dream back” said the multi-Millionaire. Bruce, I think America has treated you pretty dang well.

“Now is the time to stand with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, roll up our sleeves, and come.”

Gross! Are you sure Springsteen said that, and not someone in “Nailin’ Palin”?

R | 11/3/2008, 5:23 pm EST

These musicians are obviously wise for campaigning on Obama’s behalf. People have the nerve to criticize others when they are getting motivated by Sarah Palin and ‘Joe the Plumber’…now that is idiotic and pathetic.

Republicans know what Kool-Aid tastes like. That’s why they think everyone’s drinking it.

Authoritarian prisoners will vote for McCain/Palin. Yeah Bush is in hiding. But if McCain wins, he’ll be on camera, trying to say something.

Springsteen’s w/ the brave and the enlightened, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan.

We’ve all heard Rupert Murdoch’s boys and girls, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter. We’ve all witnessed their government, Homeland Security, their self-defeating selfishness.

John Densmore. Bruce Springsteen. Woody Guthrie. Pete Seeger. Bob Dylan. Brave. Illuminated.

Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity. Rupert Murdoch pawns. Selfish and self-defeating.

Harlan | 11/3/2008, 8:40 pm EST

John’s Video is really cool and right on. He has maintained his views when many from his generation have wavered.

so... | 11/3/2008, 9:02 pm EST

Yes, because people who criticize musicians are automatically Republicans and therefore must be motivated by Sarah Palin and Joe the plumber.

Ellen | 11/3/2008, 9:39 pm EST

I am a 47 year old American woman that HAD lots of respect for Mr. McCain BUT now that I see him dividing our country, I have lost all respect for him. Leave aside other issues, Palin, Joe the NOT plumber, and the lies coming out of these people’s mouths. Is McCain trying to hide the association of Palin being part of the Alaskan Independent Party?

Wake up America, Wake up!!!

Schultz | 11/3/2008, 10:34 pm EST

Hey Chuck U,
You ever heard Year Zero? Reznor makes it pretty damn obvious who he supports and who he doesn’t – I don’t see your presidential choice being voiced loud and clear in your post. Me? I voted Obama and I am not a musician nor a tree hugger.

Get out and vote!

Jordan | 11/4/2008, 1:57 am EST

Hope all of these celebrities enjoy getting taxed up the ass when their man Obama is elected… after all, Obama wants to spread the wealth around, right?
But I do give Trent props for his email. I’m a lifetime Nine Inch Nails fan and I have nothing but respect for Trent and his work. I believe he was very wise for not endorsing a candidate one way or the other. He realizes that celebrity endorsements are ineffectual in swaying our vote.

Mark Jeffery Koch | 11/4/2008, 10:35 am EST

As a White, Jewish American I cast my vote this morning at 6:00AM proudly for Barack Obama. I know that he will win and I am beaming with pride about America and I am very proud today to be an American. We’ve come a long way and we still have a long way to go but every American should be thrilled that we chose the content of someone’s character rather than the color of his skin in deciding who our next President should be. I am fifty-eight and have grown up during a time when Blacks could not drink from the same water fountains as whites, use the same bathrooms as whites or eat at the same restaurants as whites. Finally, at long last, America has been transformed into a nation where we judge someone for their ability and not their race. I believe the greatness of America that so many people around the world admire and love will be restored by President Obama. Rejoice America!!!!! We did it right, we did it well, and we just elected a great President!.

Just go out and vote. | 11/4/2008, 12:05 pm EST

It’s hilarious that Rolling Stone needs to make a point to add in that Reznor supports Obama. RS is completely going against the message Reznor put out there. He’s probably the smartest/most understanding of the musicians out there because, by just saying people should vote, you’re not going to lose fans and you’ll still motivate people and not come off as a preachy millionaire outsider who is about as in touch with the issues as someone like Murdoch or Bill O’Reilly.

I voted for Obama, but I know a lot of people who won’t buy tickets to a Springsteen show anymore because he starts talking about politics. This is very relevant in northern NJ where most of Springsteen’s biggest shows happen and also happens to be a Republican heavy area, though it is starting to turn with the younger crowd like myself.

It’s good to try to motivate people, but when you start pushing your opinions on people exhaustingly, you’re undermining your fans’ intelligence. Even though I voted Democrat this election (as I refuse to affiliate myself with either party at this point since they’ve both disproved themselves recently), I’ve been turned off by people like Springsteen the last few years who end up putting out this message that comes off like this: “Everyone look at me, I sell millions of records and live in a huge mansion and don’t go to work at a 9-5 job everyday with 90% of the population who see what it’s like in reality, but I know more about politics and what this country really needs than you do. That’s why you should listen to me and vote for Barack Obama or John McCain, or Elmer Fudd or whoever the hell else I tell you to. I am smart you are dumb.”

I think they’d have a more profound effect if they just tried to inspire people in general. If they put a message out like Reznor, this is what might happen; the people who were on the fence about both the candidates and didn’t know which one they liked better so they’d decided to just not vote might be encouraged to seek out more information. They would then seek out information about the candidates on their own terms, and develop an opinion.

People didn’t start buying Springsteen/NIN CD’s because Bruce and Trent told them to; they heard the music, formed their own opinion and decided. This is the very same message Reznor is putting forth and the complete opposite of what Springsteen is doing. By listening to the music, in this case the “music” meaning researching the policies and stances of each candidate, you decide who you like instead of having someone else’s opinion decide for you. In today’s economy, you can’t afford to take someone’s opinion before buying into something.

Don | 11/4/2008, 2:45 pm EST

Bruce Springsteen has made a living writing songs that represent the troubles of everyday working people. Sure, he’s made millions of dollars off of those songs, but would you rather he started singing songs about his money and how great it is to be rich? The fact that people sing along with his songs and yet get all upset by the fact that he expresses his political opinions is absurd. To quote Nirvana’s In Bloom, “he’s the one, he likes all our pretty songs and he likes to shoot his gun, but he don’t know what it means.” I was at a Springsteen show recently where he started talking about illegal wiretapping and rendition and people started booing. Illegal wiretapping and rendition and the RAPE of our constitution over the past 8 years NEEDS to be addressed, and yet a bunch of drunk idiots would rather sing and dance along to songs they don’t understand. Pathetic. Whether you agree with their political beliefs or not, Springsteen and every other PERSON, artist or not, in this country, is entitled to their opinion, thanks to the FIRST AMENDMENT. An amendment which, if McCain and “let’s ban books” Palin have their way, won’t count for much soon.

basser | 11/4/2008, 3:57 pm EST

I totally agree with “Just Go Out And Vote”

I went to a concert by The Waybacks, a great band that blends multiple genres and displays excellent musicianship, last night, and the lead singer simply asked people to just go vote. He said “It’s so easy to disagree about politics, but I think we call can agree that we want to leave a green earth and clear, blue skies behind for our children and their children.” I agree. It’s too bad people get so caught up in the “My candidate/party is the Messiah and your candidate/party is the devil” mentality.
And I agree with the post below that says when bands/singers start pushing their politics relentlessly down the throats of the public, it becomes a bore and a pain. The Waybacks’ singer/guitarist, James Nash, did it correctly. He told people to go out and vote what their heart and head tell them, rather than fly into a ten-minute tirade on why this politician is evil and such. When other artists ram it down our throats, they are insulting our intelligence. We have the intelligence to do our own research, to read news stories (other than just RS and CNN) and to form our own opinions based on our needs and concerns. Simple as that. Yes, the band has the right to its opinion, but yes, I have the right, whether I agree with their politics or not, to want that band to perform music/art, rather than hear their politics.

Don | 11/4/2008, 4:23 pm EST

I don’t agree with forcing your beliefs on anyone, but there is nothing wrong with raising awareness of injustices and issues that need to be discussed. It might insult your intelligence if you’re aware of these issues, but honestly, there are millions of misinformed, ignorant and/or indifferent people out there. And correct me if I’m wrong, but Bruce has never said that YOU should vote for Obama, he has merely stated that that’s who HE is voting for. Sure, he’s either preaching to the choir or alienating fans who disagree with him, but there IS a chance some people might become interested to learn more and seek out the truth. Maybe not. Maybe it’s pointless. I just don’t think people should be bashed for stating their beliefs.

bmcquil | 11/4/2008, 5:25 pm EST

While I agree I could care less what most celebrities think, Springsteen is much more than a celebrity or an inspiring performer – he is a great American poet/writer who will be remembered for his ability to describe the hardships of everyday Americans. Those who suggest he should just “shut up and sing” are jsut expressing their ignorance. I recommend reading the speech he gave in Cleveland which is available at springsteen.net.

Don | 11/4/2008, 5:41 pm EST

I’d also like to add that while I’m not a fan of Ted Nugent (politically or musically) he is equally entitled to his opinions and expressing his opinions at his concerts.
However, it’s unlikely you’re going to find a bunch of liberals at a Ted Nugent concert booing him, because most are intelligent enough to avoid them.
