Def Leppard Consider Indie Status As Label Contract Ends

After almost 30 years of major label success, Def Leppard are considering going the indie route. “For the last five or six years we haven’t had the greatest of support from our record label,” singer Joe Elliott told The Age. “We signed our contract in 1979, a lot of regimes ago. Once there was respect for what you’d done, but it’s all just bean-counters now. I find that very sad.” With their contract expiring and no major offers in sight, the band are considering going the same course as bands like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails. “If Radiohead and the Eagles can go off and do it on their own, that’s an acceptable yardstick to measure our own chances by,” said Elliott. Radiohead enjoyed great success in this new frontier, the Eagles raked in the royalties from Long Road Out of Eden thanks to a deal with Wal-Mart. Elliott believes that Def Leppard has been around long enough that they no longer need the major label support, as their fanbase is firmly set. With no deal in place, Elliott says the band will seek a lucrative agreement for touring and online sales while recording as independent artists.

“If Radiohead and the Eagles can go off and do it on their own, that’s an acceptable yardstick to measure our own chances by”….Ummmm, last time I checked, Radiohead and the Eagles were not the punchlines of jokes…You know…What has 7 arms, 8 legs and sucks?….This guy is a fool to think his band is in the same league as those groups. Please, in your next interview tell us how you’ll be bigger than the Beatles!

70 Million albums sold, and that’s not even counting all the singles, additionally sold during the vinyl & Cd era, which is not exactly a joke either. Radiohead, by comparison, has sold only a paltry sum of 25 million units to date, also worldwide by the way, and that’s roughly 1/3 of Def Leppard’s total sales. The Eagles are well over 100 Million to date. Recalling correctly, the Eagles were the #1 selling band of the 70’s[often referred to as the Beatles of the 70's] and when they went on their extended hiatus in 1980, Def Leppard became the next megaselling band, and they succeeded the Eagles on radio/charts/in sales, period. Sure, there were a handful of other bands in the same league. Def Leppard, through their own musical experimentation, may have lost their megaplatinum status in the 90’s, but the last album seems to have steered them back in the right direction. ***The record companies have stuck their own foot up their asses. Their meat and potatoes are the ARTISTS themselves, because without their music, creativity, and even if some of them are a “packaged/produced artist”, they are the ones taking the risks and putting themselves out there, making fools or heroes of themselves, unknowing what will be a “hit” or not[regardless of promotion]. More power to bands like AC/DC – The Eagles – Bryan Adams – and all the others, as well as DEF LEPPARD, who are taking command of where their music is going and how it will be issued, royalty rates, and creative control, etc.-etc. because for decades, they were horribly ripped off, as were WE, the fans. Yup, some of the music was great, but we were all cheated and continue to be on vintage music. When a record company CEO is making zillions more $$$ than the artists, and the artists are broke & bankrupt, something is terribly wrong – and yes, there are reported ‘excesses/indulging’ on both sides. I’ve seen many bands go under and down the drain because they couldn’t break even.

Deadhorse, are you kidding to think that this band is a joke? DEF LEPPARD rocks harder than most, with a handicapped one arm drummer to boot. Most critics are piss poor want to be musicians who do not have the dedication to their muse,or lack thereof.Stop and think before you type your foolish jokes.

This band almost singlehandedly put a new genre of music on the map which could be caled “metal pop rock”, which is basically hard rock with a pop edge to it. Before Poison, Warrant, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, and Winger had their day, Def Leppard had established their place in music with Pyromania and Hysteria, two great albums. Joke all you want about the drummer, but these guys have my respect.

Def leppard is and always will be the most creative trend setting band in rock music history. They can write any style of music and put their stamp on it and it stands the test of time. Sparkle lounge is a great album chock full of stripped down leppard classic potential that was overlooked by the public because the label didnt promote it.
