The Who Prove They’re More Than a “Tribute Band” in New Jersey

It’s hard not to be a little skeptical as you walk into a Who concert in 2008. Half the original line-up is dead, the two survivors are entering their mid 60s and Pete Townshend himself has repeatedly called the current incarnation a “tribute band.” Yet when the lights go out and Townshend walks up to the microphone and screams out “Where they fuck are we?!” before banging out the opening notes of “I Can’t Explain,” it’s hard not to feel a bolt of energy shoot through your body.

Two years ago the Who launched a massive world tour in support of Endless Wire, their first album of new material in 24 years. The band — which now consists of bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Zack Starkey, keyboardist John “Rabbit” Bundrick and guitarist Simon Townshend in addition to Roger and Pete — were regularly playing over 75% of the new album. This only left room in the set for their very biggest hits, leading to a disjointed show that didn’t please their casual or hardcore fans. On this brief tour they’re down to just two new tracks, leaving room open for a few gems.

The first surprise of the night was “Sister Disco,” from 1978’s Who Are You? Prior to this tour they hadn’t dusted it off in nearly 20 years. The performance was a little rocky, but two songs later they nailed the Who’s Next chestnut “Getting In Tune.” Prior to “Who Are You,” Townshend addressed the economic meltdown. “Times are hard,” he said. “Luckily not for me — but for you guys. We’re going to brighten up your day.” Before a killer “Eminence Front,” Townshend explained how he wrote the song in the midst of the early 1980s recession, and put tremendous emphasis on the lines “The shares crash, hopes are dashed” as he sang it. The highlight of the night was the back-to-back Quadrophenia songs “5.15″ and “Love Reign O’er Me.” During the latter, Daltrey defied his age with a spine-tingling scream of “Reeeeeiiiiign.” It was a bummer to look at setlists earlier in the tour, though, and see that they’ve recently played “Naked Eye,” “Magic Bus,” “Sea and Sand” and even The Who Sell Out rarity “Tattoo.” C’mon guys, spread the love.

As expected, the main set ended with “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” Less than a week until the election, a song about the futility of leadership change has never been less timely, but it still brought the house down and had me screaming “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss” regardless. After the inevitable Tommy medley, Peter and Roger stood alone in the center stage and played a beautiful acoustic rendition of “Tea and Theatre” from Endless Wire. The song is about two friends reflecting over tea in their old age. “Lean on my shoulder now/The story is done/It’s getting colder now.” It was a perfect way to end the night, and proof that no matter what Pete says, this is no tribute band.

Setlist:
“I Can’t Explain”
“The Seeker”
“Anyway Anyhow Anywhere”
“Fragments”
“Who Are You”

I was at the concert last night, and seeing Pete playing and singing was truly an experience I’d never want to be without. However, I was quite disappointed on a few of the songs.
“Who Are You”, never a fave of mine, sounded absolutely amazing–I saw it in a whole new light– until Roger came in early, apparently throwing Pete off, and trashing the entire rest of the song. Thoroughly. This was not the first night of the tour. Get your act together! I was pissed off, disappointed. The boys were even disgusted at the end of the song.
“Eminence Front”. Started out great. Roger sounded super. Again, by the end, it was a sloppy mess. “Won’t Get Fooled Again” almost got trashed as well, but Pete, the freaking amazing artist that I know he is, managed to pull it back together.
Their talent shone through, despite the “Let’s start that again” and the messed up lyrics on “The Seeker”. I just expected a tighter show. I’d see them again, but for a whole lot less $.

That was one of the best shows I have ever seen. The chemistry between Pete and Roger is magical.
These men are true legends. Thank you for a lovely evening.

I was at the concert last night too…I’m not sure if Lori was at the same one, but these guys rocked the house (as usual)…Lori, pick up a guitar, write a song or two, and get up in front of 25,000 people and see if YOU can be perfect…oh wait, The Who were perfect last night…

Sloppy Jack | 10/30/2008, 3:18 pm EST

This was a great show… with enough of the incredible chaos, loudness, and sheer energy we’ve come to expect from the new Who to make up for some spots where the songs didn’t flow or the jams meandered a bit (Pete and Zakk always pulled them together). I differ with the reviewer though: I found the 2006 tour very satisfying, among the best of the 22 Who shows I’ve seen (admittedly all post-Moon so many will say my opinions don’t count… sorry I’m not that old).

s.vagal | 10/30/2008, 8:19 pm EST

I saw them at the banknorth garden and they were frickin’ amazing. one of the best shows i’ve ever been to!

I was at the IZOD Center in the 3rd ROW with my wife and 5 year old son. He sang every lyric to every song along with Roger and Pete, and he even played his harmonica during Baba O’ Reily. At the end of the show, I held my son up over my head, and both Roger and Pete waved to him and gave him the thumbs up. It was the end of a perfect night of awesome music, and a time my family will never forget.

SHOW OF THE YEAR!

xkeots | 10/31/2008, 12:38 am EST

I have seen “The Who” over 60 times since 1967 when they played their first show in the USA for Murray The K. Most of those shows I saw with Moon. I did see the show at the Izod last night and it was quite amazing. I found the mix a bit bottom heavy and Roger lost a good part of his voice (but he compensated nicely for it) after about an hour. I took my 9 year old son who has now seen the boys 3 times. This is not a tribute band. Pete & Roger put together a band worth calling “The Who”. Zak really carries the band now with the energy of Moon. You can feel the feeding off of zak & Pete. The old formula still is there.

RealGoodLookingGirl | 10/31/2008, 1:02 am EST

I was at the Detroit show, loved it, but was the tiniest bit disappointed not to hear “Real Good Looking Boy”. They’ve played it at every show since!!!! Ah well, still love The Who. The show was beyond amazing, and so are they. (Loved the story about the little boy raised on Dad’s shoulders, getting a wave from Pete and Roger – adorable.)

Ma Donald | 10/31/2008, 3:19 am EST

Kills me to say it but The Who has sold out innumerable times over the past 30 years. Their album The Who Sells Out was as prophetic as Nostradamus. That god awful Tommy broadway musical, live shows with Pete playing acoustic guitar to guard his fragile ears….20 greatest hits albums…
..now playing without Moonie AND Entwhistle…a shame.

guy | 10/31/2008, 5:40 am EST

lori, in my opinion you’ve got it wrong.Big time. Fragments, behind blue eyes, getting in tune, love reign o’er, cry if you want, see me feel me and tea theatre all show stoppers. Impossible to perform them any better than they did. Usually townshend is the standout but this clearly was roger daltreys night. Greatest lead vocalist live than anyone in any style of music. Better even than john lennon.

Lori | 10/31/2008, 9:21 am EST

Guy, I wasn’t asking for perfection, but come on, those 3 songs turned into a mess, and you know it, and for me to know Seeker lyrics better than them is pathetic. Roger sounded good once his voice warmed up five songs in. How about warming up an hour before the show?

Sean, stick to listening to your one album, which I’m sure is the Greatest Hits.

freebird61 | 10/31/2008, 9:54 am EST

Confused on some of the comments..I have seen many live bands and no one is perfect, that is what make The Who so special..They play with a carefree windmill swinging intensity that really cannot be descibed unless you witness it. Sure Pino could be louder, Zach is better then Kenny Jones by far, Rabbit is great, Simon helps, but the real show and reason I went was to see Pete and Roger….When they started the Detroit encore with Magic Bus, I didn’t care what it cost….

Happy Mike | 10/31/2008, 11:12 am EST

Lori—it’s part of the experience. Roger’s vocal quality is the best it’s been since I started going in 1979. A show I saw a few years ago, he seemed to have lost it altogether. Be happy they played Sister Disco and Gettin in Tune…nuggets haven’t been played in years….SMILE it’s the Who

JoeBoston | 10/31/2008, 11:37 am EST

Saw them at Boston and Mohegan. Both very high energy shows, typical. Hi-lite for me was the three-fer from Quadrophenia; Sea and Sand, 5:15 and L.R.O.M.(Roger mixed up lyrics however) and Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere at Boston. Was disappointed in See Me Feel Me at both shows. At past shows (all since ‘76) they seemed to reach higher crescendos but not this time..(??)
Over all …they were soooo f’ing good!!!!

Eric | 10/31/2008, 11:55 am EST

All the debate seems so pointless – who cares what you call this band, who cares if a guy over 60 hits a bum note once every 6 songs, who cares if another 60 year old does not jump as high or as often as he once did. The question is do you still get a “buzz” from the songs as these “old blokes” perform them? I do, and that is why I go out to see them when they play. Let’s face it, none of us are getting any younger, and for two hours on Wed. evening, the band I saw at the Izod made me, and everyone around me, feel and act a bit younger. For that I thank them. My opinion, great show, and they should keep it up.

Lori | 10/31/2008, 3:51 pm EST

Eric–no buzz. I thank them for putting on a good show. Great? No freaking way. There is no chemistry between Roger and Pete. Good for those who got a buzz from the show; I got none once they trashed “Who Are You”, and rightfully so. They were separate entities on that stage, and it showed more brightly than Roger’s shiny chest. Just not what I wanted to see up there. My opinion, no debate needed.

Lori | 10/31/2008, 3:56 pm EST

Rar!

harpo | 10/31/2008, 5:33 pm EST

The WHO go down as one of the premier bands in rock history…not even close….with Townshend one of the most literate writers to ever come along.
RS columnist Matt Taibbi could take some pointers from Pete. Taibbi is sophmoric, and thinks he’s a comedian. Another wussie who sounds like he’s writing for the High School Gazette.

Steve R. | 10/31/2008, 10:41 pm EST

I’m convinced the Who were the best live act ever. But I’ve never quite forgiven them – I had tickets to see them in Phoenix a few years back (when John was still alive) but they cancelled at the last second – for the lamest excuse that I have ever heard. They claimed they had booked two concerts on the same night! Of course they played Hollywood Bowl that day and Phoenix got screwed. They never rescheduled either. Shame on them for that.

Howard | 10/31/2008, 10:41 pm EST

Hey, I’d rather see some not-letter-perfect renditions of any song, by any band than note for note perfect renditions that aren’t even played live and perfectly choreographed. That ain’t rock and rock.

The Who are rock and roll, and it’s not perfect, but LONG LIVE ROCK!

The show was great Wednesday night. I don’t believe I’ve seen them play better (Well, maybe ‘back in the day’ but I don’t remember much of it LOL)

wah | 10/31/2008, 10:43 pm EST

i did mohegan and jersey, i don’t know the exit #….both were good not great shows…more energy at show #2, now they’re playing about 2 hours a pop.c’mon guys, you can do better, lose real good lookin’ boy, it was a dog in jersey.jam a bit more, sparks was great, stray from the set list and stop just playing the songs like the records.i’m glad i went and recorded, what’s up with the encore series? entwistle while you work……

guido | 11/1/2008, 4:23 pm EST

lori,i agree with guy about rogers performance. it was phenomenal, remember he is 65 years old and his vocals were never better and i have seen them al least 40 something times since 1969. even his swinging of the mike(like it or not)was incredible. Never has there been a better live singer, not plant, not elvis, not anyone.,not even paul mcartney who sounded worse than karokee when i last seen him. you are right on when you said they trashed who are you, that song was terrible and the only low point for me of the night. i thought for a moment peter may have lost his hearing again. anyway i doubt they will ever perform that song as good as 2001 concert for nyc. probably greates live performance by anyone of all time. long live the who and if they can go 5 more years to 70 and play like wednesday im going to suspect that they are space aliens and not human.

Wow paul sounds like karokee. You know Pauls in older guy to. I watched him at the roundabout and he did very very well. I enjoyed listining to him. Now i watched the who thing on vh1 and i just idk Roger had an amazing voice it just hes older its hard to keep singing that good. But from what it sounds like mus of been pretty good last concert. Keith moons a stud if he was still alive there concerts would be like a wild wild party lol

Cj | 11/4/2008, 1:49 pm EST

I have to take exception with pete’s lyric “meet the new boss same as the old boss” being “less timely”.

Pete is always timely. Always ahead of his time. And if you think differently, you are one of the fools who continue to let it happen over and over again.

I can’t believe that a rock n roll magazine and it’s reporters can so blatantly support a major party candidate. Fucking posers.

i wish that george harrison and john lennon were alive still i bet they would be so happy about the new game coming out unfortunately people tend to comment the BEATLES rudely saying they are old get over them or just their music is lame but i never liked the beatles before to be honest whenever someone said the beatles i would just think oh its just a band but when i took the time to listen to their music i was truely amazed :) i dont understand why people say mean things about the beatles my mom always tells me if i dont have anything nice to say then dont say it i mean i have to listen to my mom im only 11 and sometimes i sit and wonder will i ever meet ringo starr and paul mccartney well i will just keep wishing cause you never say never and i live in south africa and they are in london. “HOPEFULLY”
