AC/DC Return to the Road With Same Old Awesome Song and Dance

Walking into the opening night of a new AC/DC tour one expects few surprises. Based on past experience, Angus Young is going to do a strip-tease during “The Jack,” Brian Johnson will swing from a giant bell before “Hells Bells” and the whole thing will conclude with “For Those About To Rock, We Salute You,” complete with massive firing cannons. Last night’s opening gig of their 2008 world tour in Wiles-Barre, Pennsylvania — their first American tour since 2001 — was everything fans expected, which is precisely what made it so amazing. AC/DC perfected the rock concert around 1981. Why change it now?

The show began with a cartoon showing demonic, sexy women tying up Angus and hijacking a train. Needless to say, he foiled their plot seconds before the real Angus burst onstage in a maroon schoolboy outfit. They opened with their new single “Rock And Roll Train.” From there they went back three decades to the Bon Scott era gem “Hell Ain’t A Bad Place To Be.” Brian Johnson quickly assuaged fears that the sixty-one year old chain-smoker’s voice had deteriorated during the group’s long hiatus. It was as wonderfully grizzled as ever, though it was often hard to make out some of the words,
even when he talked to the crowd. Angus, who spent much of the evening shirtless, ran around the stage like a wind-up toy all night. During “Let There Be Rock,” a giant hydraulic lift in the middle of the floor carried him far above the crowd for his solo, which concluded with him twirling around on the ground like a dog chasing his tail.

For a group who refuses to release a greatest hits album, they’ve always been quite keen to play a greatest hits set. “Thunderstruck” was the only song in the set released between 1981 and 2008. While this practice is irritating for groups like the Who (who consistently skip over deep cuts in favor of the upteenth rendition of “Behind Blue Eyes”), many of AC/DC’s best songs are their hits. Regardless, nobody was complaining. Five songs off their new album Black Ice — which came out last week — were included in the set. They fit in seamlessly with “Back In Black” and “Highway To Hell,” even as they (somewhat predictably) inspired mass bathroom breaks.

During “TNT” huge flames shot out of devilish train in the back of the stage, which was surprisingly chintzy by AC/DC standards. Before the next song, “Whole Lotta Rosie,” Johnson gave the crowd some bad news: the group’s gigantic blow-up, Rosie, had recently bit the dust. “The flames you just saw melted her.” He wasn’t kidding — she was on stage for Sunday’s rehearsal gig. “We’re getting a new one,” he said reassuringly. The church-like ritual of an AC/DC concert cannot be disturbed, even when flames destroy an obese inflatable woman. When the group launched their last American tour in the summer of 2000, Al Gore and George W. Bush were neck and neck in the polls. A lot’s changed since then, but AC/DC are exactly how we left them.

Set List:
“Rock and Roll Train”
“Hell Ain’t a Bad Place To Be”
“Back in Black”
“Big Jack”
“Dirty Deeds Done Dirty Cheap”
“Thunderstruck”
“Black Ice”
“The Jack”
“Hell’s Bells”
“War Machine”
“Anything Goes”
“You Shook Me All Night Long”
“TNT”
“Whole Lotta Rosie”
“Let There Be Rock”

Encore:
“Highway to Hell”
“For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)”

Really AC/DC? Only 17 songs. For the outrageous ticket prices you’re charging you’d think you guys would be able to go at least 20 songs deep into a set list. Oh well, at least ya’ll still rock. And hopefully there will be a new Rosie before you get to my neck of the woods.

goggs90 | 10/29/2008, 4:56 pm EST

They’re not young anymore Mr. EaarCandy… you should just be happy they are touring.

Paul | 10/29/2008, 6:08 pm EST

Where the hell is Phil Rudd and Cliff Williams? In the cover of the magazine I mean.

Sean | 10/29/2008, 8:18 pm EST

ACDC come back to Montreal!!!!! add a date on your tour for it!!!!

reeves | 10/29/2008, 9:13 pm EST

I’ve got tickets for Cincy, I just hope they play more than 90 minutes, and 17 songs (if not I’m paying more than one dollar a minute!).

Franklin | 10/29/2008, 10:46 pm EST

I was at the show last night…it was AMAZING! i can’t even explain how good “Let The be Rock Was” when Angus went ALL out! Biggest dissapointment was how short the concert was….$108 a ticket with Ticketmaster rip off charges for only 90 mins. of Ac/DC was a bummer…no Moneytalks, Who Made Who, Hard As a Rock, jailbreak, A long way To the top…etc…

Chris from Mechanicsburg PA | 10/30/2008, 12:49 am EST

I was a cold night in Wilkes-Barre Tuesday night with six inches of first-season snow on the ground, but AC/DC was nothing but HOT. My ears are still ringing a day later from the awesome volume… Kathy and I had a great time at last night’s AC/DC opening tour concert at Wilkes-Barre – she is the bigger AC/DC fan, but I have to admit – they got me from their new song, Rock and Roll Train…that opening song’s video of the train was excellent, and set the mood for the night with a full-size locomotive “wrecking” on-stage after two vixens get Angus’ engine going. For those that don’t know – Angus is a Guitar God!

jimmy logan | 10/30/2008, 4:52 am EST

jimbob | 10/30/2008, 11:06 am EST

Pete | 10/30/2008, 11:20 am EST

Don’t care how old you are. Saw the Boss in Atlanta and he played 2 hours and 40 minutes. 1 1/2 hours is too short. Can’t wait to see them though

erix - LATVIA | 10/30/2008, 5:24 pm EST

I am waiting 31. march – Barcelona !!!!

dd | 10/31/2008, 5:50 am EST

For those picking about the length of the show, first of all let’s remember that Brian is no longer in his 30s or 40s and cannot maintain singing the way he does for 2 hours. Fact.

Also Franklin..after Bon’s death they’ve never performed ‘It’s A Long Way To The Top’. Brian out of respect chose not to sing it (and I’m thinking the band felt the same way) as it was a ‘Bon’ Song.

You can’t have it all. You’re going to probably miss out on a favourite song, don’t forget they have a new album to plug.
All the stock-standard songs will be there.

Neil | 10/31/2008, 8:05 am EST

4 dates in UK isn’t enough (as I didn’t get tickets).
Why no Sheffield? biggest county in England.

mantle | 10/31/2008, 9:26 am EST

I was at the opener the other night and I have to agree that it was to short. How many times has someone told you about a concert they went to see and they played for 2 1/2 to 3 hours (U2, Stones)and you thought, “wow”. Wouldn’t they want this as part of their legacy? Give the people their money’s worth.

C’mon Ang.

mfigninja | 10/31/2008, 12:46 pm EST

Yeah make sure you shut your “lime” ass up… I think you may have meant “lame”… Thats ok the world needs janitors too.

mantle | 10/31/2008, 1:36 pm EST

Sounds like a watermelon, calling me a lime. ACDC Rocks evn though it could have been longer

steamer | 10/31/2008, 4:06 pm EST

I’m just glad they are dragging their old asses out of the comforts of there mansions to rock for us again even if it is only for 1.5 hours.Let there be rock!

harpo | 10/31/2008, 6:08 pm EST

These guys get better like fine wine..AC-DC ROCK ON.
Tim Dickenson’s video story on John McCain was laughable…McCain would lose and find Timmy before he knew he was gone. Get rid of guys like Tim and Taibbi they are driving your cred even deeper into the “Big Dumper” in the GREAT BEYOND!!!

daniel | 11/1/2008, 8:44 am EST

just so everyone knows this was the setlist for the “secret gig”
the real tour gigs are longer and include way more songs.

Jon Blues | 11/2/2008, 4:43 pm EST

I truly hope that the band Tour Canada and get Don Coleman to join the show. His video and song to celebrate the life and spirit of Bon Scott has been on their website ac/dc.com/fromtheband for 6 months. He truly rocks and AD/DC fans can enjoy more rock with Don’s Tribute performances on You Tube which also includes a video for “Rock & Roll Train”. AC/DC must be getting old if they’re only doing 17 songs as Don’s set list is around 23 – 25. Then again… you’re never to old to Rock and Roll.

mantle | 11/2/2008, 9:11 pm EST

Sorry Daniel, that’s about it. Those were the songs on 10/28. Unless Wilkes-Barre was a warm up. If so tickets should have been discounted.

“The church-like ritual of an AC/DC concert cannot be disturbed, even when flames destroy an obese inflatable woman.”

mr. greene that is downright awesome.

MrMeanJeans | 11/12/2008, 9:51 pm EST

Having been a fan of AC/DC since the ’70s, I bought concert tickets for the 1st time, the Boston show. What a concert! The music hits you like drinking water from a fire hydrant! Powerful, explosive… Angus may look 70, but he performs like a teenager! Malcolm’s in the back… very intense guy. Brian looks like he can’t believe he get’s to sing the songs.

I’m a former olympic athlete and can’t figure out how these guys, (Angus, Phil) have a chance to recover between gigs. Truely amazing performance!

Bon's Johnson | 11/13/2008, 4:53 pm EST

Was looking up ther set list on the “Highway to Hell” tour. The most they played was about 12 songs. The “Let There be Rock” Movie has 14 Songs. But for the price there charging for those tickets(Phx, AZ cheap seat $112.00) they should do at least 2 Hours.

Anonymous | 11/30/2008, 2:42 am EST

I saw them in DC and I was amazed that dirty deeds got the most crowd responces. But hey, they are fans and love the whole show. I was also supprised that the new songs were very well recieved. Nobody left to take a piss during the new stuff. Hummmmmm hit record?????

Rick | 12/20/2008, 9:28 am EST

Will be attending Tampa Concert 12.21.08 looking forward to being a part of their success!

I’m going to tomorrow (01-09-09) night’s 2nd sold-out Toronto, Ontario, Canada show!! It’ll be my 3rd AC/DC show – in 20 years LOL You can rock my boat anytime Angus ;)

Lance Moore | 2/10/2009, 4:57 pm EST

Attended AC/DC’s last show in the US on the Black Ice tour in Nashville January 31. (I had seen them once before over a decade ago)
This was a great show, beyond my expectations – even though they were very high!
Angus Young not only did his usual high energy antics – he played the guitar ferociously, like he had something to prove….
I have seen many rock guitarists perform over the years, and to date Richard Blackmore performing with Deep Purple in 1972 had been the pinnacle of rock guitar for me.
But not after this performance.
Angus Young proved to me and those in attendance in Nashville that he is the premier PERFORMING rock guitarist of all time, and Rolling Stone putting him at #97? of the greatest rock guitarists of all time – should be stricken from the books…..
He set the bar higher that night that I believed possible. (Is he really in his 50’s?)
As for the rest of the band – steady, underrated, and stellar.
Malcom Young – will never get his due, but his leadership and guitar work is the reason AC/DC resounds through the speakers!
Hats off to the greatest rock performance I have ever witnessed.
