MTV Cleans Out The Vaults With New Music Video Website

10/28/08, 2:41 pm EST

Perhaps looking to actually make use of all those music videos that are just sitting in their vault, MTV has launched a new Website, dubbed MTV Music. Thankfully, MTV didn’t stop short after uploading the TRL fare, as iconic and vintage videos — some even predating MTV itself — are ready for streaming. It’s kind of like a higher quality YouTube, but without those annoying pop-up bubbles. The collection is pretty comprehensive: Of the 20-something fairly obscure videos we searched for, only two were absent (no love for Us3’s “Cantaloop [Flip Fantasia]“).

Plus, artists who have banned their videos from YouTube (like Michael Jackson and Prince) are both included and embeddable on MTV Music. And judging by the minute-and-40-seconds long amazingly-incredible intro to Prince’s “Cream,” the videos are all in their full-form glory. With the finale of MTV’s last “real” music show TRL airing in November, it’s nice to see MTV find a good retirement home for all those videos.

Too late MTV. People don’t even associate music with MTV anymore, and therefore aren’t going to be inclined to turn to your website(s). People are so used to going to YouTube now. Too bad, so sad.

Agreed with the previous commentator. I will go to youtube first, then if it isn’t there I will go to this website. MTV, you had the world and you totally blew it

There were several videos I couldn’t find. Maybe my tastes are too obscure, or maybe they still have some adding to do.

But yeah, I’ll still go to YouTube first.

no Joe Jackson videos (Steppin’ Out, Breaking Us in Two, Is She Really Going Out With Him – all great videos from the early days), “The One Thing” by INXS or “Our House” by Madness (sacrilige!)

But they do have the Duran Duran cover of “White Lines,” “Life in a Northern Town” by the Dream Academy, and “You Played Yourself” by Ice-T.

Maybe MTV should change its name since they don’t play music videos anymore.

Am I the only one amused by the ‘MTV Music’? It’s Music Television Music.

Kind of like National Basketball Association Basketball. MTV had become so far removed from their original premise they have to remind people that they are involved with music.

MTV should be named RMTV (Reality Music TV) seems to be the only thing they air now.

Frank | 10/29/2008, 12:02 pm EST

You guys couldnt be more wrong. People dont want to watch music videos on youtube. People watch music on MTV surrounded by other music lovers and quality content. Youtube is sweating this hard.

Mike | 10/29/2008, 12:11 pm EST

What’s the over/under on how long this new website also stops playing music?

Hey everyone. Don’t forget that MTV also does a great job in airing a ton of commercials. After all, I believe their commerical breaks are anywhere from 4 to 6 minutes long. LOL I miss my M(adonna)TV.

kliff | 10/29/2008, 4:36 pm EST

I WANT MY MTV – BACK

ex-mtv addict | 4/19/2009, 2:15 am EST

Why MTV? Why more crappy shows? Maybe I’ll consider getting cable again when MTV decides to play music videos 24/7 like they did when they first aired back in the 1980’s. MTV, you’ve lost your freakin mind.
