John Paul Jones Hints At Led Zeppelin Tour Without Robert Plant

After weeks of rumor and hearsay, Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones has all but confirmed the band will soon hit the road again. Unfortunately, the reunion this time won’t include Robert Plant. As Jones said to a Manson’s Guitar Show in England last weekend, Jimmy Page, Jason Bohnam and himself are all “itching” to hit the road after reuniting in London back in December 2007. However, Plant has been occupied with his tour with Alison Krauss. So while Plant hopes to reunite with his Led Zep bandmates “in a couple of years,” Jones said Led Zeppelin will instead go on tour with another vocalist in place. “As soon as we know who it is, we’ll let you know who it is,” Jones said of the new singer. (For Rock Daily’s YouTube replacement singers, click here!) This may all be just posturing in an attempt to force Plant’s hand to join them on tour, despite Plant’s claims that he won’t tour again “for at least the next two years.” In news that Led Zeppelin fans might enjoy more than the prospect of seeing the band with another singer, Jones also hinted that the band’s legendary reunion concert from London’s O2 Arena might eventually be released on DVD.

Update: John Paul Jones told the BBC that Led Zeppelin is not looking for a Robert Plant clone. “You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don’t want to be our own tribute band,” Jones said.

Good God, say it ain’t so!! Can I try out…again???

Memphis Minnie | 10/27/2008, 11:52 am EST

That would suck. It can’t be Led Zeppelin as long as John Bonham is dead, anyway, but it would be nice if the guys didn’t tarnish their legacy the way The Doors, INXS, and Queen have by touring as shells of themselves with new, subpar lead singers. At this rate, when’s Julian (or, god forbid, Sean) Lennon gonna join Paul for a “Beatles” reunion?

Why don’t the 3 of them find a new singer and think of a new name for a band? release new stuff and begin a NEW chapter for Page/Jonesy

TurdBurglar | 10/27/2008, 1:02 pm EST

“Don’t Do It” to quote The Band. Zep is a band, like Kyuss and Soundgarden, who has a perfect legacy, don’t screw it up. Touring without Plant just sounds like a money grubbing boring plan. Please don’t do it…

Bob Plunt | 10/27/2008, 1:10 pm EST

Tour w/o a vocalist! Post-Rock Zep!

Joe the Plumber | 10/27/2008, 1:18 pm EST

Led | 10/27/2008, 1:27 pm EST

Alison Krauss is the new Yoko.

fogcutter | 10/27/2008, 1:28 pm EST

Spare me….
The band has done nothing over the last 30 years on account of a original member dying. Now, you want us to believe that they’re willing to tour with a replacement singer…when Plant is alive and very well. Only morons would go see this pathetic spectacle.I can only conclude that LZ is willing to totally flush their leagcy down the toilet. This is a BS story.

HuffStuff | 10/27/2008, 1:32 pm EST

I have zero problems with David Coverdale — none — touring with Page, Jones and Bonham. Page said he got along with him just fine when they toured 15 years ago and really respects him as a vocalist.

Ann Wilson would be my personal choice.

Calling it Led Zeppelin would be wrong, though.

NotMozart | 10/27/2008, 1:39 pm EST

For the love of god, no. As much as I’d love to see Zep play again, if they do it without Plant, I will never go see it. They are a band. 1/2 a band isn’t the band, just look at Skynyrd nowadays. Say it ain’t so.

Renniz | 10/27/2008, 1:44 pm EST

What about the singer from the Black Crowes? He did a hell of a job on the live at the Greek theater show with Page.

Tommy Chong | 10/27/2008, 1:54 pm EST

I’ll do it for a little Bob Marley?

Aaron | 10/27/2008, 1:57 pm EST

John, Jimmy,Jason:

I know you guys want to get on the road again. But if Plant’s out, for the LOVE OF GOD DON’T DO IT!!!
look at Queen without Freddie, Lynyrd Skynyrd without 75% of their band. Just don’t do it!! and get that reunion DVD out ASAP!

RealMuso | 10/27/2008, 1:58 pm EST

bad, bad idea. I dont know which is worse: Van Halen with David Lee Roth again, a Queen like reunion with a different famous singer, or the Yes route with a singer from a cover band.

How about Travis from Cattle Decapitation?

lake monster | 10/27/2008, 2:11 pm EST

john corabi!!!

Rob | 10/27/2008, 2:16 pm EST

Good for them as Plant is holding them hostage. Jimmy Page will be pushing 70 years old by the time Plant is ready. Plant kills me, goes on tour with Krauss and does Led Zep covers with her but won’t tour with the real thing.
Move on guys, just don’t call it Led Zep. Call it “Celebration” or something like that. Coverdale would really piss off Plant. Chris RObinson (Black Crowes) would be awesome. Don’t go with Steven Tyler please!

T-Bone Burnett | 10/27/2008, 2:20 pm EST

This would be disastrous.

And for all the people criticizing Plant for touring and recording with Krauss instead of with Zep, get over it. Plant and Krauss made one of the best albums of 2007 and do better live versions of Zep classics than Zep themselves did at the O2 arena last year. They sound amazing together.

Dean Wien | 10/27/2008, 2:29 pm EST

If you go on tour, please don’t call yourself Led Zeppelin. You didn’t call yourself Led Zepplin when Plant & Page went out on tour. You should call the band “ZOFO”. I would go to that! I wouldn’t go if it was called Led Zeppelin.

Nathan | 10/27/2008, 2:29 pm EST

Yeah, Led Zeppelin without the original singer would be awesome. Desperate for money much?

Eric | 10/27/2008, 2:29 pm EST

Chris Cornell – I think he has time for a cash -n- grab!

EG | 10/27/2008, 2:29 pm EST

To the men of Led Zeppelin:

I will burst into tears crying if you tour without Plant. It’s sacreligious, really.

BHS616 | 10/27/2008, 2:31 pm EST

Led Zepplin without Robert Plant is like The Beatls without Lennon or McCartney, it just doesnt work… If Page and the others wanna tour so bad do something else that isnt Led Zepplin and just wait for Plant. The guys been touring for a long time with Krauss he deserves some kind of break…

stuporfly | 10/27/2008, 2:31 pm EST

“How about Travis from Cattle Decapitation?”

This is only the suitable response if the question is, “Who is the singer in the band with the worst fucking name this side of Cradle of Filth?”

Dean Wien | 10/27/2008, 2:32 pm EST

That would be like Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr went on tour as “The Beatles”. That wouldn’t be the right thing to do. Going out as Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr performing songs of The Beatles would be the way to go.

TJ | 10/27/2008, 2:34 pm EST

They should tour as a blues band with various influential singers.

Anonymous | 10/27/2008, 2:56 pm EST

What a horrible idea! I’d much rather see no tour at all then a Zeppelin tour with a different singer.

Charlie Miller | 10/27/2008, 2:56 pm EST

This would absolutely break my heart. I am not ready for another massive letdown. Jimmy, John and Jason- PLEASE for the love of everything beautiful, of which your band is surely one, do not tour without Robert!

Robert, get your shit together and just do what everyone else in the world wants!

krist | 10/27/2008, 2:58 pm EST

Neil Young maybe? He jammed with them at the Hall of Fame ceremony.

Dave Grohl could be a potential to.

Don’t call it led Zeppelin though, that`d be worse than the Who

Charlie Miller | 10/27/2008, 3:01 pm EST

I know I just posted… but god DAMN do not do it! The very idea makes me head burn!!!

Sanchez | 10/27/2008, 3:19 pm EST

It should be Paul Stanley.

mike | 10/27/2008, 3:22 pm EST

David Coverdale…?

NO but seriously this news sucks. If they dont have Plant they shouldnt tour at all and if they must tour they can’t call themselves Led Zeppelin.

Flip | 10/27/2008, 3:23 pm EST

How about Kanye ?

Just me | 10/27/2008, 3:24 pm EST

Fuck Robert Plant! Go ahead guys. Rock the fuck out of us! Why should one guy spoil it for the others? It wasn’t anywone but Freddie’s fault that he died of AIDS. It wasn’t anyone but Jim’s falt that he OD’d in Paris.
Robert is still alive and is the one kepping US from seeing Zep tour again. Direct your anger at him.

Lets compare where these guys would be playing with or without their band names:
Brain May & Roger Taylor: Beacon Theater.
Queen + Paul Rogers: Madison Square Garden.

Call it buy the name that will sell: LED ZEPPELIN!
Who the fuck are we to say that these guys should not fly the flags of the bands that made them famous.

Flip a Coin? | 10/27/2008, 3:28 pm EST

Steven Tyler is a terrible choice, Aerosmith is the American Zeppelin. I just think that would be a piss poor career choice considering Aerosmith is still a working band. Coverdale is the obvious choice and should be the singer. Though I love the suggestion of Ann Wilson. Heart always was the female Zeppelin. If anyone has the chops to rock it in a new interesting way still keeping the meat of the vocals intact it would be her.

nileppezdeL | 10/27/2008, 3:29 pm EST

i think zeppelin should wait for plant to be ready before they tour u cant have zeppelin with just two members

Joe | 10/27/2008, 3:35 pm EST

Sebastian Bach
Steve Perry
Scott Weiland
W. Axl Rose
Jack Black
Dave Grohl
Jack White

Anders | 10/27/2008, 3:36 pm EST

The right man for the job would be Jack White. He can actually sing like RP. He plays guitar like JP in his young days. And he has the spark to set the show on fire.

Jungleland2 | 10/27/2008, 3:54 pm EST

This is the way of the world nowadays. The singer gets older, can’t or does not want to destroy his voice every night.

This will be another Forigner, Styx, Journey, Yes, Van Halen situation.

With LZ the problem is that SO MUCH of the charisma is Robert Plant, it’s just too big shoe to fill.

Now if they tour as Jimmy Page Band, then I don’t care who sings.

And the new Whitesnake is their best record since Slide It In

DOUG | 10/27/2008, 3:55 pm EST

HOLD OPEN TRYOUTS, LIKE AC/DC DID AFTER BON SCOTT DIED AND PICK THE CLOSEST SOUNDING ROBERT PLANT YOU CAN. PLANT MAY NEVER BE READY!

DOUG | 10/27/2008, 3:59 pm EST

I hear Tort-Elvis is available

Robert Shrub | 10/27/2008, 5:52 pm EST

Celine Dion says she is available for the 2nd half of the tour and will leave husband at home with Baby in Monreal.

The Whole Truth | 10/27/2008, 5:55 pm EST

HORRIBLE IDEA! Do those guys need the money that badly? It’s simple: No Plant. No LZ. For a group that has seemed to go to great lengths to not tarnish their reputation, this is bizarre.

I assume this is to put pressure on Plant to jump aboard.

Allison Krauss is not Yoko. Plant is right not to tour as Zep. He’s still has creativity but not the same voice. Maybe Eddie Vedder.

Mikel K Poet | 10/27/2008, 6:45 pm EST

To me, that would be like Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers without Tom Petty, or The Beatles without, either John or Paul, or Lynard Skynard without Ronnie, or Guns n Roses without Slash; somehow, it just ain’t right.

brian | 10/27/2008, 6:48 pm EST

it could be good. i have to agree that rob plant hasn’t had it since like… live aid maybe? i just don’t want them to expect us to pay $250 bucks for zep w/ jack white, chris robenson, or god forbid david coverdale.

Terri Reed maybe.

But come on Robert, this Krauss tour’s been going forever and we know the record was great, but you have a duty to make history hear and pay back the fans for all that publishing royalty income you’ve been stacking away . Do it already. Common seriously, it’s like Lennon breaking up the Beatles to go on tour with Cilla Black.

There are way to many people here who are obtuse and simply should not be commenting. Plant is doing the right thing, Zeppelin ended on September 25, 1980. Listen to the boots people,if you want Zep. All your choices are retarded. I sometimes forget, there a alot of ignorant bottom feeders who liked Zep too. No true Zep fan wants this tour!

MancoBlondie | 10/27/2008, 9:06 pm EST

This ‘reunion trend’ has to stop. Led Zeppelin made a good decision in ending the band with the death of their legendary drummer. It was heartfelt, understandable, and a wise decision, considering the great legacy they’d built with him.
These reunions are so popular now because our young pop musicians are lacking the crossover, massive appeal of these old time hit makers. (Hard rock pop in Zeppelin, punk pop with The Police.)
Jimmy, John, what you should be doing is reaching out to younger musicians who could use your advice and try to breed your talents and musical knowledge in them rather than have a spotty tour without the absolutely amazing, essential vocals of Robert.
Queen, this goes for you too. Stop destroying your classic rock legacies with these rock star-midlife-crisis-tours. (Or maybe instead of pulling Robert away from his current tour, follow his lead and find your own niche and cute bluegrass singer?)

Jeff | 10/27/2008, 11:45 pm EST

Terrible idea. It’s just not Zep. BUT IF THEY HAD TO PICK A NEW VOCALIST, they should pick Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes. Check out the Black Crowes w/ Jimmy Page Live @ the Greek. Robinson is the only singer who could possibly belt it like Plant. But still a bad idea.

Brian Gallagher | 10/28/2008, 1:31 am EST

Worst idea ever. John Paul Jones n now I know why Jimmy and Robert excluded you a couple of years ago you`re a freakin retard(good bassist tho)

btw anonymous, if zep was over in ‘80 then what the hell was live aid and the recent reunion in london all about? dude, rob plant hasn’t been able to hit those notes for ages (check footage of either show i just mentioned). however you wanna do something cool zep? hire someone that wails like chris cornell.

auramac | 10/28/2008, 2:50 am EST

Page can write some new tunes with the others, get a singer, and do a CSNY. But without Plant, don’t do it and call it Zeppelin. Then he looks like the artist, and they look like old Vegas farts- like the New Cars or The new Doors. Pathetic.
The Temptations and the Four Tops are dead, too. At least Ringo calls it Ringo’s All Star Band. Would it be the beatles with Paul? No!

Steve | 10/28/2008, 3:24 am EST

Led Zeppelin ceased to exist when JohnBonham died. The Beatles ceased to exist when John Lennon died. The Who ceased to exist when Keith Moon died. The Doors ceased to exist when Jim Morrison died. I’m sick and tired of these acts trying to pass themselves off as the real deal. Led Zep without John Bonham and Robert Plant is about as bogus as the current incarnation of the Who.

The Truth Commission | 10/28/2008, 6:38 am EST

What a goddamn farce this has all been. The one-off show was acceptable. Rumours of a tour were acceptable. To call the band Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant is a monumental dumbshit move worthy of George Bush.

Spoil the magic of Led Fucking Zeppelin going on tour by hiring a mercenary singer instead of waiting for Plant!

If they’re itching to go on tour, they can’t fool anybody by calling it Led Zeppelin. It ain’t Led Zeppelin.

Who the hell would sweat through a ticket lottery and pay through their ass to hear some band-aid singer in Led Zeppelin instead of Robert Plant? Especially when there are dozens of other bands touring who are 100% intact at the top of their game. There’s nothing goddamn special about Jones-Page-Bonham-ringer. It has to have Plant. Discussion closed.

smarkarrow | 10/28/2008, 8:27 am EST

Get Ann and Nancy Wilson and call it Led Heart. I am not kidding. Page gets a great rhythm back up and Ann can sing the hell out of Zeppelin. A small modicum of integrity is left and Robert Plant walks onstage in New Orleans making everyone poop their pants with delight.

brain | 10/28/2008, 8:45 am EST

No. No. Please NO! Thats just stupid. I really want to see Zep. Too young when they were in there prime although I caugt Page/Plant in 99… and that was great but I wouldnt go see this. Now I understand they are musicians and they want to play and they enjoy making music together… so call it something else do some covers of various bands mixed with SOME Zep and it may be acceptable. MAY BE… If thats not the case get Robert or call it a day.

They only have to wait a short while for Plant to get over this country music faze and get over his obsession with Alison Krauss. Plant will have to do it just to save face. If they do go on without Plant, it will be like The Stones without Jagger ya know.

How bout another Jimmy Page/Black Crowes tour? Everyone knows it would be better, and not cost $300+ for tickets.

black bottom | 10/28/2008, 1:24 pm EST

I would be interested to hear Roger Daltrey sing Led Zeppelin songs.

B.S. | 10/28/2008, 1:34 pm EST

The fact that a rumor like this is floating around is really sad. This will never happen. And I’m sure the guys of Zeppelin have better things to do then squash this rumor so it will stay out here floating for a long time until they eventually do a reunion which will be in at least 2 years. I’d be interested to know who started this one. Anyway, did you hear that Neil Peart has left Rush??? Yup. The band will continue with a replacement though…its rumored that Phil Rudd from AC/DC will join once his touring obligations are done for the Black Ice tour.

kj (rock n' roll superman) | 10/28/2008, 2:02 pm EST

I have to agree w/ jeff and rock n’ roller…….first off you can’t call this a led zeppelin reunion tour…..with out bonom or plant, it just can’t be called led zeppelin. now that i have beat that dead horse……jimmy page and the black crowes live at the greek theater double disc is amazing! all b-side zeppelin tunes w/ a few covers and some occasional crowes tunes. Robinsons voice sounds very close to plant’s and of course his 70’s throw back style fits the script to the “T”. However…..Andrew Stockdale from wolfmother would be a great call as well…….i meen he does have the voice and also the same 70’s flare that Robinson brings to the table. i just think if your going to hit the road w/ out your lead singer and you are going to go ahead and try to replace the man w/ someone else…….you minus well do it w/ somebody who isn’t the commercial superstar of another band? let’s be honest here….in this comment section i’ve heard steven tyler, roger daultry, jack white, chris cornell, and some burn out singer from great white? what’s next are page and john paul going to pick up steven adler from celebrity rehab to play the skins for them? please i suppose you guys wouldn’t mind if ol’ bono jumped in the mix either?think before you rite people…….this is about led zeppelin, the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN who have rocked are world at some point or another, not some all star cast of over rated musicians…..i.e. BONO. -kj-

Dean Wien | 10/28/2008, 2:10 pm EST

Last night, I was sitting at The Izod Center at The Meadowlands, N.J. watching ColdPlay perform. True Musicians with an excellent stage presence. I was thinking about what i read on Rolling Stone on line about Led Zeppelin going out on tour without Robert Plant. I truly can’t see myself spending money to see Led Zep without Plant. If a band member passes on, and is replaced, then I understand that situation, but Plant is very much alive. It’s just not the right thing to do if Led Zep tours without Plant. If they called themselves something else, then I might go see it. Plant/Page didn’t call themselves Led Zep when they went out on tour.

Jungleland2 | 10/28/2008, 2:48 pm EST

Roger Daltrey – Vocals NEEDS THE MONEY
Paul McCartney – Vocals/Keyboards RICH
Jimmy Page – Guitars RICH
Pete Townshend – Guitars RICH
John Paul Jones – Bass – NEEDS THE MONEY
Ringo Starr – Drums -NEEDS THE MONEY

You can tell who owns publishing and who needs the live performace to pay the bills

Now would you go see Daltry / Jones / Starr …..maybe for $30

basser | 10/28/2008, 3:36 pm EST

Jungleland2:

How do you know Roger Daltrey needs the money? The Who have been more active since 2000 than the early 1980s. Their 2000 tour made some money, their 2002 tour made even more money (thanks to VH1 sponsoring and the media circling Entwistle’s death), and the 2006-07 tour, like this new 2008 mini-tour, is drawing crowds. How do you know Daltrey (please spell his name correctly) needs the cash?

And yes, I would pay to see Roger Daltrey, John Paul Jones, Ringo Starr (and a bassist) play together onstage. I’m there … :)

Anders | 10/28/2008, 4:02 pm EST

I got three things to add.
1. RP is not going to do this in the next couple of years and time is definitely a factor here. JP is what – 65? Therefore, if this is going to happen it will be without RP.
2. If they choose to team up with one of these boring has-beens that is mentioned in most comments on this page they will fail big time. It will be a catastrophy, and it will seriously damage the legacy.
3. The rumour is that they are working on new material. Now JP and JPJ has not been very creative/succesful since the LZ days. To succeed they need to team up with somebody who has the energy, the creativity and the skills to fill the shoes of RP and add to the songwriting. I can only think of one person and that is Jack White. He is one of the most talented musicians/songwriters of his generation and he has Led Zep running in his veins. He has what it takes to make this ship fly again, and prevent disaster. Just try and listen to White Stripes, Black Math or Raconteurs, Blue Veins. It doesnt come closer than that. So if you are out there listening Jimmy, get on the f***** phone and call Jack now!

Alessandro Cima | 10/28/2008, 4:06 pm EST

Well, so obviously this will not be a Led Zeppelin tour. There’s no Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant. Certainly no Led Zeppelin that I would ever go listen to. They should rename themselves ‘The Dimwits.’

oasisfan1 | 10/28/2008, 4:20 pm EST

NateHevens - Zephead | 10/28/2008, 4:34 pm EST

WTF is wrong with all of you?

1. To the people bashing Allison Krauss: Lay off her. This is Plant’s (stupid) decision, not hers. Hell. He claims no tours for 2 years. That leaves even Allison in the wind, folks.

2. Jones himself NEVER said it would be a Led Zeppelin reunion. And Page, when asked, made the following statement:
“Playing at the 02, that was our reunion and it was one day and it was at the 02 in London… And basically that was it because if you’re going to do a reunion, you need four members.”
So it will NOT be called Led Zeppelin.

3. Currently there are two singers whose names have come up in the media in connection with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham:
-Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge
-Steven Tyler of Aerosmith

ZoSo | 10/28/2008, 5:47 pm EST

it will just be like what plant and page did in the 90s, except this time around it will be Page and Jones, or vise versa. and by the way Memphis Minnie down at the bottom, The remaining members of the Doors toured under the name of “The Doors of the 21st Century”. I am a huge fan of Zeppelin, but i understand why Robert doesnt join, his time with them is for the most part done, he cant hit the notes he used to, so he forces the rest of them to adjust, he has a diffrent voice so he knows its time for him to try diffrent things, and thats what he has done with Alison Krauss. So I congratulate Robert for doing that.

warcrime | 10/28/2008, 6:13 pm EST

Who are we to tell Jimmy Page and JPJ how to live…

They EARNED the right to tour however the hell they want to. Can we really demand they take their talents straight to the grave… electronica, jack white, no vocals, do whatever ya want mr Page.

The crowd’s desire for 1973-era Zeppelin is basically perverted. That was 35 years ago, what are you a bunch of historical re-enactors? It’s the future now, deal with it.

Sanity Clause | 10/28/2008, 8:40 pm EST

Everybody has an opinion. Jimmy & John Paul shouldn’t tour as “Zep”, however some good vocal choices have been mentioned in the comments below. The best one mentioned however would be Sammy Hagar. Strong vocals, can play guitar in a pinch and with Jason on drums, HARD ASS ROCK!!! Plus where else could one go see some “Zep” tunes, some Hagar tunes and some classic “Van Halen” tunes. Besides…Sammy is used to working with an egotistical guitarist. Jimmy…give Sammy a call at Cabo Wabo. He’ll bring the tequila.

If a band came to your town with Jimmy Page, John Paul jones and Jason Bonham and a legitimate singer who could sing the bejeezus out of Zeppelin songs, who could say they wouldn’t want to see that? It’s 2008. Robert Plant has been bitching about singing Stairway since 1980. So, find somebody who can sing it, sing it well, and let’s all move on to a new era of appreciation for the greatest rock n roll band ever. If jimmy Page is playing In My Time of Dying and JPJ does an organ solo during Thank You or No Quarter, than I’ll tell you that it will melt your face right off. I believe Mr. Jack Black said that in School of Rock, so forget Robert Plant and his whines about how he can’t relieve the past and let your faces be melted like mozzarella cheese on a wicked good meatball sub.

TBOT Moneyshot | 10/29/2008, 12:30 am EST

Hopefully this is indeed just an attempt to force plants hand. The band has waited this long for a reunion tour it’d be a shame to dampen it by using a stand in. That being said we’re the three to go on tour with a different singer I would still camp out to get tickets.

MegaSudz | 10/29/2008, 12:06 pm EST

Steven Tyler?

The Led Zeppelin reunion reports haven’t stopped trickling in despite Robert Plant’s vehement denial of the band touring without him this spring. The current status story comes from The Mail’s Sunday newspaper, which claims Aerosmith vocalist Steven Tyler has joined the group’s jam sessions in London.

“They had a great time,” a source said, “but Steve kept [messing up] his lines. He got quite flustered about it.”

aguyusinghishead | 10/29/2008, 1:15 pm EST

Please welcome to the stage:

“The sound of a toilet flushing the legacy of one of history’s greatest rock bands.”

The ones who were there when it counted have always known that LZ were an overrated live band; today, we get confirmation that they are still out to lunch and desperate.

This all but confirms that Plant is the only one with any integrity. HE managed to grow and develop as an artist. Page…well, let’s see….oh yeah….THE FIRM.

Oops, I, too got carried away:
this news is total BS.

Steve | 10/29/2008, 1:22 pm EST

They’d better get on the horn with Justin Hawkins right away because he’s the only one that could come close to pulling off this atrocity. If they’re going to try to do this without Plant, they might as well go down in flames with Hawkins over the top falsetto

mcstansical | 10/29/2008, 1:56 pm EST

First of all, I saw Led Zeppelin at MSG in 1977. They were mediocre at best ! And I am a Led Zeppelin fan. Page was great, but Plant ? He’s not a showman. Period. That being said, if they toured without him, it’d be a sham.

Muddy Waters | 10/29/2008, 2:20 pm EST

Screw these guys… they stole my songs!

Vanilla Ice | 10/29/2008, 2:58 pm EST

I’m open to give a try……but don’t ask me for “that” tune….

Swoon | 10/29/2008, 3:21 pm EST

Led Zeppelin reformed in 2007. Robert Plant quit in 2008 to chase skirts and feed his ego at the Grand Ol’ Opry. Why should Bonham, Jones and Page not be able to continue what’s rightfully theirs. They didn’t abandon Led Zeppelin and their dedicated fans, Robert Plant did. Besides, the press is the only one saying it would actually be called Led Zeppelin. They never did. They have a right to make music!

Enough Already! | 10/29/2008, 4:21 pm EST

So Page, Jones, and Bonham can’t get together and tour because Robert Plant has moved on with his life and doesn’t want to live in the past? I truly can’t believe how stupid some of you sound. Led Zeppelin died with John Bonham. Plant has obviously and quite successfully moved on with his own career and has made some excellent music in the process. He doesn’t need to trade on past glories and he has said those very words countless times over the last 28 years. It doesn’t make him a bad person and he doesn’t owe anyone a Goddamn thing, particularly a bunch of whiners who think he should drop what he’s doing and sell out for the almighty dollar because you think he should. Honestly….shut the hell up. Zep is dead. Page, Jones, and Bonham are not touring as Led Zeppelin, so stop getting your panties in a bunch over it. If you don’t want to see the show(if it happens at all), then stay home. That means more tickets for the rest of us who love the music and don’t need every piece in place to enjoy it.

Anonymous | 10/29/2008, 4:22 pm EST

If you are curious as to how Led Zeppelin would sound with a different lead singer consider listening to Donovan’s “Hurdy Gurdy Man” since it features three guitar players” Donovan Leitch, Jimmy Page and Allan Holdsworth, bass: John Paul Jones and Drums: John Bonham & Clem Clatini. I should be surprised that the article didn’t mention this. Nice research guys.

Whatever, just don’t call the band Led Zeppelin. On the one hand, you can’t blame Jones for wanting to get out there and play Zep music, but on the other hand you have to give Plant credit for not wanting to simply make gazillion $$ for touring as Led Zeppelin, when Zeppelin ceased to exist a long time agao.

Ok, Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant is kind of dissapointing, BUT if it were absolutely positively to happen, only two people could pull it off and make it really awesome:

1- CHRIS CORNELL
2 – The dude from WOLFMOTHER

and yes, i agree with some of the other posters, if only JEFF BUCKLEY were alive…

Please stop mentioning Steven Tyler and David Coverdale, that would suck.

A Led Zep reunion?
What a ponderous thing
Minus dear Robert
Who don’t wanna sing

NateHevens | 10/30/2008, 3:37 pm EST

Oh. My. God.

This is ridiculous. Absolutely, utterly, and completely ridiculous.

The Pope, aguyusinghishead, Steve, and others in this same vein:

How many times does it have to be said:
THEY AREN’T GOING TO TOUR AS LED ZEPPELIN!
Jones NEVER said they would tour as Led Zeppelin, and Jimmy said, basically, without Plant and John Bonham, there is no Led Zeppelin. So will you people get those twists out of your freakin’ knickers, already? It’s been said over a billion freakin’ times that they will NOT TOUR AS LED ZEPPELIN. They, will, however, tour and record with Jason Bonham and a different singer, most likely under a new name and only be related to Zep by a few songs, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones.

Remember this… it is the MEDIA claiming that “Led Zeppelin” will tour despite Plant’s comment to the contrary. THE MEDIA IS WRONG!
Get it?
Got it?
Good.

NateHevens | 10/30/2008, 3:38 pm EST

Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith are the two most likely being considered for the part…

I personally like Myles Kennedy.

David Cassidy immediately comes to mind.

j | 10/30/2008, 7:10 pm EST

Robert Anthony Plant

Achilles Last Stand to Tangerine.
Plant IS the voice of Led Zeppelin at it most
powerful moments

Missing high notes, bad notes it means
Nothing !

(The black crowes thing a few years ago while quality was still was not the Geniune thing !!)

Pagy poor concept.
Bonzo would not want his old friend Robert
not involved in this World Tour.

Plant may be literally in love/lust with Allison and this could be the issue !

2009 or 2010 the Real Zeppelin only.
Bonzo may be watching…. For Real !

Lorraine Goldsmith | 10/30/2008, 10:03 pm EST

The best choice is David Coverdale of Whitesnake. Let Plant go sing country and bluegrass with Alison while Jimmy, Jason, John, and David bring Led Zepellin back to glory.

Spirit of '58 | 10/31/2008, 4:36 am EST

Of COURSE they can tour and of course they can play songs made famous by Led Zeppelin but they will not BE Led Zeppelin. Perhaps they should do what Queen have done – Queen & Paul Rodgers – and slightly amend their name.
On the subject of the 21st Century Doors… I was very sceptical about the whole concept but they pulled it off. I see no reason why a Led Zeppelin & A.N. Other lead singer couldn’t do the same.

hubers6 | 10/31/2008, 11:38 am EST

Robert Plant teams up with T-Bone and Alison and creates something new. Live they throw in a couple Zep tunes, revamped and amazing.

Maybe Page and Jones and Bonham should consider writing something new and fresh with a new singer.
They could tour under a different name and throw in a couple of Zep tunes, revamped and maybe amazing.

On the other hand, if they get a new singer and play all Zep tunes under the moniker Led Zeppelin,it would be a sad day indeed.

This idea is as stupid as Axl Rose calling his band Guns N Roses. LOL!

Bunny | 10/31/2008, 5:28 pm EST

No way. No no no. Chris Cornell sounds too old now, Dave Grohl, I love him in his band, not in Zeppelin. No fucking way to David Coverdale, I would rather see Joni Mitchell sing Zeppelin than that douche. This is all probably Robert Plant’s way of getting some revenge on Jimmy Page or something, who knows. All I know is I wouldn’t pay a dime to see anyone who isn’t Robert Plant

Bunny | 10/31/2008, 5:38 pm EST

No no no no. This is wrong. I don’t want to see anyone but Robert Plant with Zeppelin. Don’t they get it? You can’t replace what people love.

King Ring Nancy | 10/31/2008, 7:40 pm EST

The best choice comes from Scandinavia he is a amazing vocalist “Jorne Lande” look him up and listen!

Enough Already! | 10/31/2008, 7:56 pm EST

Once again, the communication process has broken down.

THEY WILL NOT BE TOURING AS LED ZEPPELIN. THEY WILL NOT BE TOURING AS LED ZEPPELIN. THEY WILL NOT BE TOURING AS LED ZEPPELIN.

Read the bloody article. They can’t be more clear about it

TOM SMITH | 10/31/2008, 8:25 pm EST

Why not Sammy Hagar? Then they could call it RED ZEPPELIN!

dhanks | 10/31/2008, 9:33 pm EST

Ok, well I was too young to see LZ and many bands when they originally toured. But a few years ago I had the pleasure of seeing the Moody Blues for the first time. Yes they were older and Ray Thomas had already retired. I saw the remaining three (of course Michael Pinder was out years ago). It was a thrill for me. I also saw Roger Waters in concert a few years ago and that was a treat even though he was not with Pink Floyd “the band.”

I would love to see LZ tour again with or without Plant just simply because it would be better than nothing at all. As long as they are playing the music that I have grown to love and a majority of the players are there, I don’t really think Plant is a “dealbreaker” for me.

Steph | 10/31/2008, 11:07 pm EST

The best voice for the job is Pat Monahan from Train. I heard him myself when he was touring solo earlier this year. He can hit the notes and has the energy. Just search for Pat Monahan on You Tube and listen for yourself.

Linda Perry | 11/1/2008, 6:44 am EST

they need someone interesting who can HIT THE NOTES. Look for her YouTube video of “Whole Lotta Love” with Velvet Revolver. She would blow Plant away in a side-by-side.

Cornell would have shredded this gig about 15 years ago but now seems lost and limited.

Daveed | 11/1/2008, 10:42 am EST

I love Kruase’s blue grass stuff, I’ve heard her & Plant’s interview and Plant has always liked artists like Joni Mitchell and that’s why Zep did their version of acoustic stuff on Houses etc.

However I’ve never bought a single Plant album, I like his voice but the stuff he puts out bugs me. Plant Krause concert came to my area, but I didn’t go to see it because I saw it on PBS booring.

I totally agree with those who say without John Bohnam there will never be Led Zep again. Perhaps that’s how Plant feels??? The tight sound of Zep came from JB & JPJ, JP was the genius wizard and RP’s magical voice and songs made the Zep sound and magic happen when those four came together.

When the four combined together it was like an internal combustion engine firing on all four pistons.

I have a lot of respect for JPJ and JP the two worked together before they found RP as the singer for the band JP was putting together. I would go and see them with or without RB.

I’ve also heard rumors that JP has new material he’s like to record hopefully with RB if that happens, that is one album I would go buy if it ever happens.

slyd | 11/1/2008, 11:11 am EST

Hell! We all know that Led Zep are not Led Zep without Plant … but, what the s**t, you stick PAUL CARRACK in there with Jimmy and the boys, you’re gonna have some rockin’ music!!!!

nephos9 | 11/1/2008, 12:40 pm EST

Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant is NOT Led Zeppelin. Just like Page & Plant without John Paul Jone was NOT Led Zeppelin! They are my favorite band of all time, but you can’t make a happening happen again. When Zep was last active, Bonzo was alive, and they were endeavoring to hold their own against the challenge of punk. Punk has come and gone and come again, the 70s and their vibe are gone, and Robert has moved on. Do you really think that seeing 3 guys in their 60s along with their dead drummer’s son is going to bring back the era of groupies and mud sharks, the meeting of metal and funk, and all that Zep ushered in? Get a clue and a brain and ramble on into NOW!

polltax | 11/1/2008, 6:59 pm EST

George Harrison was asked many times over the years on the possibility of a BEATLES reunion.
“It won’t happen as long as John Lennon is DEAD…”
Led Zep members…take this good advice.

artmpkI | 11/1/2008, 11:35 pm EST

I also vote for Terry Reid. He was the original choice & he sounds alot like Plant. Here’s his chance to try on the crown.

disciple of the zep | 11/2/2008, 9:59 am EST

If they play with Plant, I have $1000 set aside I am willing to part with. If they play with someone else, I won’t pay a dime. Well, maybe a dime, but that’s not the point. The point is 3 of the 4 hurts them, but 2 of the 4 kills them.

Chaz9966 | 11/2/2008, 12:28 pm EST

All good choices for a singer, should they decide to do this?
As a joke what about Billy Squier?
Luckily I got to see them in their prime in 75,77,and at Knebworth 1979.
Bury the hatchet with RP and GET THE LED OUT.

thomsen | 11/2/2008, 8:33 pm EST

Without John Bonham, it’s not Led Zeppelin.

acrosstheuniverse | 11/3/2008, 1:52 am EST

There will never be another REAL Led Zeppelin reunion tour since Bonham has passed. So I think it would be dumb as shit to not for us not be happy about ANY kind of tour from the 3 remaining members.
I would like to see Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother perform with Jimmi, JPJ and Jason Bonham. I quote Rolling Stone’s BRIAN HIATT
“Andrew Stockdale…howls on the psychedelic power ballad “Mind’s Eye,” hitting notes that Robert Plant can’t reach anymore” Not the mention in the same review of their ONLY(Boo!)album he writes “The album also has some of the tastiest fuzz-guitar tones recorded in years, and Jimmy Page-worthy chordal riffing, as on the mighty, Viking-horned anthem “White Unicorn.” “Now we live in another time,” Stockdale proclaims, and for the song’s five-minute length, you’ll believe him. ”

word. I believe in Andrew Stockdale.

Jeff | 11/3/2008, 11:16 am EST

Pat Monahan? Sammy Hagar? Dave Grohl? Chris Daughtry? Seriously? That is like blasphemy.

Jammin J | 11/3/2008, 1:18 pm EST

This did not seem to be a big deal when Robert and Jimmy played in small arenas ten years ago with out John. I think an instramental evening wih John and and Jimmy would be nice. Or bring in a bunch of singers Alanis Morrisette, Joni Mitchell, Dave Grohl, Taj Mahal or anyone who ever played a zep cover – an evening of guests. Like Ringo and his allstar band.

Kliff | 11/3/2008, 6:05 pm EST

Possible Plant Replacements:
1. Ian Gillan
2. former Fastway singer(what’s his name?)
3. Lenny Kravitz
4. Paul Rodgers(i know he’s in queen now, but would be a great match)

Karak | 11/4/2008, 12:39 am EST

Sammy Hagar?

Gary Cherone?

Er, wrong band.

Mohammed Karim Ali | 11/4/2008, 9:01 am EST

David Coverdale of Whitesnake would be the perfect replacement for Plant. He looks like Plant and sings much better.

jj | 11/4/2008, 9:48 am EST

who can replace robert plant?
answer: NO ONE!

Raoul Duke | 11/4/2008, 11:39 am EST

Stephen Tyler Stephen Tyler Stephen Tyler

Gianni K. | 11/4/2008, 12:32 pm EST

They should get Barry Gibb or that guy from Sparks, they could totally hit the high notes.

Mytch. | 11/4/2008, 12:41 pm EST

Robert Plants voice is shot. I guess for all the people who didn’t see Zep back in the day it would be a chance to see a poor imitation of his former self. I am on Plants side. Can we not just remember them as one of the best bands of all time and not try and relive something that has long since passed?

www.flickr.com/photos/mcaphoto | 11/4/2008, 1:01 pm EST

This one is so easy. Two words = Andrew Stockdale.

Guys – Wolfmother just broke up. The timing is so perfect. And his range is retarded. The last time I saw them in a club it was full of 40+ year olds with LZ tshirts on with their teenage kids in tow. This band would draw ridiculous crowds. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

For the record, some of the other recommendations on this stream are insane. Kanye? David Coverdale? Dave Grohl? Come on!

radio zero | 11/4/2008, 5:35 pm EST

the dude from reo speedwagon!! there is no other choice. they can call the band led speedwagon and play a riding the storm out/whole lotta love medley as an encore before blowing their brains out on stage as the finale!!

**** Stars in Rolling Stone “the show was one for the ages. a bunch of old guys flailing about madly to songs their grandchildren had never heard. breathtaking!”

Benjamin | 11/4/2008, 5:55 pm EST

Led Zepplin without
Jimmie is not Led Zepplin

This is the only way Led Zepplin could be or I should say Zepplin 2.0

Jimmy Page
Robert Plant
Jason Bonham
John Paul Jones

jimbro | 11/4/2008, 10:03 pm EST

how bout billy ray cyrus.he could grow the mullet back and totally rock it !

GrayFox117 | 11/6/2008, 10:45 am EST

this is BS…….personally some other bands that get other singers or replace a band member here or there I let slide, but this is Led Zeppelin…..the kings…..the reason why every band that has come after them are what they are. To simply just replace Plant is bad taste and slap in the face, unacceptable as far as i’m concerned. But what the heck do i know, I’m only a fan.

kliff | 11/6/2008, 11:57 am EST

How about getting RuPaul and calling her Trans-Plant :)

omalleybp | 11/6/2008, 12:10 pm EST

Andrew Stockdale may be the only one I could see doing this….but still a ridiculous thing to do since the actual lead siinger is still alive and kicking. Too bad about Wolfmother though…..saw them once and they absolutely rocked!

Sam | 11/6/2008, 1:21 pm EST

Well… Led Zeppelin minus Plant – they might as well choose Enya, because I sure as hell ain’t going to a Led Zeppelin concert minus the REAL SINGER OF THE BAND WHO IS ALIVE AND WELL. I don’t care if he doesn’t want to be a part of it, it still wouldn’t be REAL.

Johnny | 11/6/2008, 1:24 pm EST

Easy! Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. I call them the Led Beatles.

Bud | 11/13/2008, 10:36 am EST

Tortelvis! Tortelvis!

What's in a name? | 11/19/2008, 12:56 pm EST

“Without John Bonham, it’s not Led Zeppelin.”

I do not understand that kind of mentality at all.
The band, or band name, should not automatically fall by the wayside or be retired, based on members of the original not wanting to associate themselves with said name anymore, or not being alive anymore. Where does that kind of CRAP thinking come from??

If ALL bands went under that same absurd premise, then the Rolling Stones (Jones), The Who (Moon, Entwistle), Deep Purple (Gillan), Journey (Perry), Black Sabbath (Osbourne), Boston (Delp), and COUNTLESS other influential bands would no longer exist.

Next thing you know, folks will want the name “Ford Motor Company” changed because the founder, Henry Ford, is no longer around to be a part of the company. So, where exactly does the madness end then?

Reruns are sometimes completely justified, and this would certainly be one of those times. LED ZEPPELIN, with or without Robert Plant, should fly. And watch how many will suddenly no longer care if Plant wants to sit home, once those tickets go on sale.

What's in a name? | 11/19/2008, 1:01 pm EST

Nathan said: “Yeah, Led Zeppelin without the original singer would be awesome. Desperate for money much?”

Actually, no – they’re NOT “desperate for money”. You are just ill-informed.

$200 MILLION was already turned down by Mr. Plant to launch this tour last year.
Now does that sound like he’s broke to you?

Please get your brain out of neutral before putting your typing fingers into drive!

Ken | 11/22/2008, 10:17 am EST

THIS SUCKS! We need this singer I really wanted to see all the classic songs YOU GUYS USED TO BE BEST FREIND TWINED WITH EACHOTHER IN MUSICAL TALENT!This was an epic failure. man this sucks!

Ron | 11/25/2008, 2:48 am EST

Hey Plant!! No one will bad mouth you for breaking any current contracts you have to do this. Either shit or get off the pot, Plant!!

Ed | 11/25/2008, 2:49 pm EST

Have you heard the Zakk Wylde Led Zeppelin Tribute it is pretty good and I think he would be a good fill in.

Franiard the Spaniard | 11/30/2008, 8:56 pm EST

John Bonham
John Paul Jones
Jimmy Page
Robert Plant

replacing him with anyone else is just plain stupid, wrong, nonsensical, bad idea, sad, depressing, bad

i just don’t wanna let it happen

seriously folks! | 12/1/2008, 10:18 pm EST

Jack Russell killed it singing Zep songs so why should anyone else even be considered. Chris Cornell is a pompus jerk off and Coverdale is done as Plant. The guy from Wolfmother sounds like he’s being electricuted and wierd. END OF STORY!!!!

Big Mama | 12/2/2008, 9:41 pm EST

I think Barry Manilow should be the new lead singer, he makes my nipples hard and he can hit the high notes like Plant could. Also Puff Daddy, B-Rad, and that white guy from 8 mile could make good replacements.

Moby Dick | 12/13/2008, 12:48 am EST

Ann Wilson of Heart. She screems!

hec | 12/13/2008, 6:10 pm EST

it would be nice for plant to do tour as long as he dont sing the way he is in his other conert

hec | 12/13/2008, 6:12 pm EST

yes ann or nancy or both of heart would be a great idea

hec | 12/13/2008, 6:15 pm EST

be real puff dady is a puff of nonsence. all his fortune is in realastate.my dog raps(talks)better then him.

Errick | 12/17/2008, 10:44 am EST

They should get the vocalist from wolfmother to do it.
I’m a Zeppelin fan but Plant sounds like crap live.

Truthful Fan | 12/21/2008, 10:17 pm EST

Pleae don’t be idiots and listen to people like Errick who have no idea what they are talking about. I have seen the legends all together and solo. The are the yardstick ALL OTHER bands are measured by. Plant’s voice was and still is excellent (Go to You Tube) and listen to the O2 Arena show and check out Kasmir and Ramble On and you will realize how well he still sings. Errick what are you basing your comments on ???

Time To Rest | 12/21/2008, 10:27 pm EST

Plant wants to let his voice rest before doing another tour. Let’s be patient and hope the mighty air ship flies again !!!!! Who is even comparable or in the same league? no one !!!

Best Bans Ever | 12/21/2008, 10:39 pm EST

Don’t be misled with ignorant comments like the one from Errick. Plant’s voice is just as ledgendary as ever (go to You Tube and listen to the 02 arena show (Kashmir and Ramble On) for example and he is AWESOME. They are the yardstick that ALL OTHER bands are measured by. No One even compares and I have seen them live together and solo. Let’s let Plant’s voice rest after the Krause Tour and hope he makes the right decision for his fans. Remember MILLIONS of people tried to buy tickets to the reunion show which was the greatest demand for tickets in entertainment history. Why? because they truely were the best at what they did.

Angie | 12/29/2008, 2:35 pm EST

I have to admit to all the other comments, its not the same without Mr.Plant… the next closest thing to his voice would be Billy Squier, before you boooo it, just take a listen to him.

A HUUUUUGE Black Crowes fan | 1/8/2009, 10:52 am EST

Seriously? Like, only 3 or 4 comments about Jimmy and the Crowes? That shit was AWESOME. Admittedly, I am a total Crowes fan….but wow. I was kinda skeptical at first, but they played Zeppelin as well (live), or in some places better, than Zeppelin did in their heyday. Give credit where it’s due, folks. I feel a bit selfish here, though…..I don’t want Chris Robinson taking time off from the Crowes to do this publicity stunt. They’ve been there, done that, got the t shirt, and rocked the fuckin’ Greek.

*disclaimer* I love LZ, but this is ricockulous.

No Robert Plant? | 1/8/2009, 4:09 pm EST

OK listen with out Robert Plant there is NO Led Zeppelin his voice is the ultimate and gives me goosebumps. I would love to see the band back together of course without John Bonham, with his son playin the Drumbs, Jimmy P on Lead, John paul Jones bass, and of course Robert Plant as Vocals.

a Zeppelin queen | 1/8/2009, 7:20 pm EST

I won’t go if it’s Steven Tyler.
aw shucks yes I would cause I love J and JPJ, but I’ll expect a discount off my tickets!
I get too excited at these concerts anyway and forget to listen… get over it Jimmy, come because we like to watch :) Good thing cds come out!
why not call it “The Band With No Name” reminiscent of LZ IV – an immensely famous move. oh the controversy — too close to the name Led Zeppelin?
or “Jimmy, JPJ and Friends with special guest vocalist Robert Plant” :/
uh oh, would that cause some singers to take their names off the hopeful’s list! who’s name would come off?

my comment here | 1/8/2009, 9:06 pm EST

although you really should not do led zep without plant, billy squier would be freekin awesome fronting the band!

Brazilian | 1/15/2009, 12:05 pm EST

Why has no one suggested Perry Farrell? Tell me that wouldn’t f**in’ ROCK!

I Heard... | 1/20/2009, 9:08 pm EST

Engelbert Humperdinck in a white tux.

touring as led zeppelin w/out plant is ill advised. call it something else, come up with new songs, and get someone who really has soul like (if they are up to it) roger chapman, phil may, chris farlowe, or chris youldon. posers like coverdale, tyler, thomes – bleeech.
