Album Preview: Mudvayne Reinvents Itself, Says Nu-Metal Will Be Back

10/23/08, 1:42 pm EST

When Mudvayne releases its fourth studio album The New Game in November, the record will be new to fans but a year and a half old for the band. Having the tour for its previous record and with vocalist Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett joining forces with Pantera’s Vinnie Paul in Hellyeah, the band opted to sit on the album as opposed to rushing it out to the market — a good choice, considering the set’s shift towards bigger choruses and more accessible melodies.

“There’s a bit of pop mentality to the way we like to write together, and maybe we’ve gravitated towards that over the years,” bassist Ryan Martinie tells Rock Daily. “There’s friendlier songs, where we’re not alienating the listener. Maybe we didn’t want to alienate ourselves either.” When the band decided the time wasn’t right to release The New Game, they reconvened and cranked out another batch of songs — a whole new album’s worth. While those songs won’t make it into the live show yet, the next record could see the light of day as early as spring 2009.

As one of the last bands standing from the nu-metal pack at the turn of the millennium, the band survived by not overplaying its initially cartoonish visual component and discouraging members to grow dreadlocks. Martinie isn’t sure why some bands failed and others can still release platinum albums, but warns about one of the least-likely nostalgia movements in music. “You have a band like Disturbed that’s still around and writing great music,” he said. “The ‘nu-metal’ genre was the uncool thing to listen to for a while, and I think it will come back around. People will say, ‘I forget that I loved that song so much.’ People will come back to it, maybe like they do with Eighties songs or bad Nineties pop.”

yeah i wasnt captivated by it in, the least, its got great production quality, eq’s good, volumes, i can hear shit cutting through. so great job….to the production. the music was disapointing, and ill tell you why.

its sounds just like hellyeah.
one that sucks about side projects. alot of these guys go and do this shit, then bring their “other” band style home. which usually sucks, considering i didnt pay to hear hellyeah(love the band), heavy grooves over str8 plain rock, thats what i come to mudvayne for. of course the previous works also seemed to be me more heart fealt. i guess ill have to keep listening till i like it. HAHA fuck that!! sorry. maybe the next album wont suck.

LD-50 was pretty creative as well as it was heavy, now with their new album, its all gone

why, dammit, whyyyy!

Adam | 12/15/2008, 11:16 am EST

Everyone spreads their hate of Mudvayne now a days all for the same reason.
” I want Ld.50 ” etc.

Good on Mudvayne for being able to expand their musical flow. The way i see it, every album has a theme that goes along with it, and they all work. They are all amazing in there own way.

It definately beats hearing the same old material over and over again from bands such as Slayer.

Mudvayne are brilliant regardless of what anyone says.

The New Game for me, 10/10.

Mudvayne fuckin rocks man. They do indeed tend to mature in each album and i like that. Hell, i know about all of their songs so fuck those of you who think MuDvAyNe sucks because you suck ass buddy. NU-METAL RULES!!!!

matt | 11/23/2008, 10:27 pm EST

wheres mudvaynes unique creativy going????? its completly gone. im so dissapointed in a band that used to be unique with not only looks but music, is now blended in with almost everyother band out there. the new record even differs from lost and found, lost and found had somewhat of a unique sound, unlike now it all sounds the same to me. so dissapointed.

clowned | 11/21/2008, 12:45 pm EST

The New Game SUCKS. It is their worst record by far.

(un)SAIDvox | 11/13/2008, 3:17 pm EST

Nu-metal is making a comeback.

Spineshank, Flaw, and some other bands are reforming.

Look out for bands like Twin Method and Forever Never. There is a revival, just be prepared for it.

Blackkout | 11/6/2008, 5:22 pm EST

You guys are fucking retarted. Mudvayne fucking kicks ass. Best band around.

nu metal sux. all them people are fake suburbanites with no style and no substance. what’s cool about exurbanites faking like they are gangster. they’re all fake and they got the same dumb tattoos. hope there ‘bodies hit the floor’(thats the dead guy’s song, right?). skinhead rules ok

Nu metal never was, and never will be metal. Putting nu metal in the same genre as metal, is like saying “American Idol” is rock and roll. Only to the uninitiated and under-educated.

wessleysports | 10/27/2008, 9:32 am EST

The reason bands stay around through different trends is musicianship. Mudvayne is loaded with guys who can actually play their intruments and write songs.

Those other nu-metal turds got lucky with one song.

VBShredder | 10/26/2008, 9:23 pm EST

Mudvayne is great band, End of all things to come is still my fav, but all their original studio albums have been solid so far. You can tell they mature as musicians with each album, and put out a different product every time, I dig ‘em. Can’t wait to hear the new album

Charlie | 10/26/2008, 7:26 pm EST

Can anyone think of another genre more closely associated with alcoholic dudes with tribal tatoos, strippers, and rich prick goth kid nihilist wannabes?

Charlie | 10/26/2008, 7:22 pm EST

Like every genre, I think “nu metal” had it’s moments. I’ve heard bands like System of a Down lumped into this genre, but isn’t tagging a group with the “nu metal” title just stereotyping?

Outside of Dig, I don’t think Mudvayne has ever been worth listening too… and that’s a guilty pleasure. This article definitely makes Mudvayne look pretty stilted like other corporate creations of their type… here’s looking at you, Disturbed, Static X, Cold, Godsmack and so on. This crap was the hair metal of my middle/high school years.

Cheesecrop | 10/26/2008, 6:11 pm EST

My question is, did it ever really go away? Bands like Godsmack, Disturbed, and Slipknot are still having hit records. Fact is, it never really went totally away at all.

kang | 10/25/2008, 5:00 pm EST

Thank god this shit is all but dead and let it rot. Only people that still listen to this are southern trailer park strippers.

tomservo8768 | 10/24/2008, 7:44 pm EST

What the hell is Nu-Metal.

NEG | 10/24/2008, 5:06 pm EST

Did he really have to sit down with a band member and be like (read Lumburgh-style):

“yeaaaaah. i going to need you to not grow dreadlocks. Can we do that? Greaaaat.”

Shogun_Al | 10/24/2008, 3:18 pm EST

L.D. 50 was sick! Nu-Metal or not, goofy make-up and all, it was a flat out great metal record. It’s too bad they have degressed to whatever they are now.
So sad :(

Jho | 10/24/2008, 1:48 pm EST

The Mudvayne article is hilarious: trying to stay relevant by not growing dreadlocks? When you fucking rock, it doesn’t matter and you don’t need gimmics. Nu metal sucks ass and these guys are just trying to put a positive spin on its destruction so they won’t have to get real jobs. And Disturbed fucking sucks

guitar_davey | 10/23/2008, 2:57 pm EST

“The ‘nu-metal’ genre was the uncool thing to listen to for a while…

Sorry dude, it was shit right from the beginning! But what I really want to know is; when nu metal makes this big comeback he’s talking about, what will they call it? “Nu nu metal?”
