Metallica Tear Up New Songs, Ear Drums at Tour Kickoff

The icy home of the Phoenix Coyotes got a blast of hot metal as Metallica kicked off their tour Tuesday night at Glendale, AZ’s Jobing.com Arena. True to form, the metal godfathers arrived on stage to the sounds of “The Ecstasy of Gold” from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, followed by the buzzsaw that is “That Was Just Your Life.” Though the songs are new, the Death Magnetic tracks fit seamlessly into the rest of the band’s catalog, and the months of road testing made those tunes feel both well-worn and razor sharp.

Much to the pleasure of the black-clad, devil horn-thrusting crowd, the quartet performed extended versions of deep cut classics like “Master of Puppets,” “Fight Fire with Fire” and “The Four Horsemen,” tunes that on previous tours were reserved for medleys. The casket rigs floating above the stage, which play off of the Death Magnetic album cover, ominously descended and tilted toward the stage during “Sad But True.”

Though Metallica are veterans, age hasn’t caught up with them. James Hetfield took turns at several microphones placed around the rectangular stage set in the middle of the arena, giving himself a solid cardio workout. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett strolled calmly around the stage as bassist Robert Trujillo paced like an animal about to pounce. Drummer Lars Ulrich sprung like a jack-in-the-box after each song and tossed drum sticks to the waiting crowd. Despite the heavy atmosphere, the band’s clear sense of fun was contagious, and it was hard not to smile along with Hetfield even as he sang lines like, “Suicide, I’ve already died, you’re just the funeral I’ve been waiting for.”

“It’s great to be back indoors and hearing you real loud,” Hetfield said. “Have you been waiting awhile for your friends in Metallica to show up?”

“Metallica has been around for 100 years and you keep coming back,” he added later. “We appreciate it.”

The setlist needs a lot of work. The best songs from Death Magnetic weren’t even touched. Shame

Frantic?? Delete that one from the setlist ASAP and forget St. Anger (Metallica’s “Tusk”)

Death Magnetic is a great album…too bad they’re not as confident in it…

libertad | 10/22/2008, 6:35 pm EST

No Judas Kiss

mr. g | 10/22/2008, 7:23 pm EST

need to play “all nightmare long” and play more stuff from master of puppets album

forget about me | 10/22/2008, 7:33 pm EST

No “Nightamre”?

aaron | 10/22/2008, 7:58 pm EST

dudes,it’s the first show. something tells me that more songs from Death Magnetic will be played. It’s gonna be okay.

Tarek | 10/22/2008, 10:27 pm EST

“All nightmare long”, I hope they play that song when I go to see them in concert.

Nobody | 10/22/2008, 11:20 pm EST

as surprised as i was to hear Until it Sleeps and Frantic, the songs were still great. Would have loved more Master, but the show was amazing in general. they’re going to rotate which death magnetic songs get played at each concert…and they are retardedly confident in their new album. if you dont believe me, watch how they blow the doors off when they come to the stage for the first two tracks. jeezus

Where’s The Unforgiven I, II and III?

M.B. | 10/23/2008, 10:50 am EST

St. Anger should not be analogized to the Fleetwood Mac Album “Tusk”, as St. Anger is a boring, overindulged record, whereas “Tusk” is a masterpiece. “Tusk” killed any notion that Fleetwood Mac was a a corporate band, just out for money. It is an artistic and creative accomplishment, especially given the fact that it followed the trillion selling “Rumours”. They could have made “Rumours II”, but Lindsey Buckingham chose to guide the band into a different, yet satisfying, direction. Plus, don’t compare Metallica to Fleetwood Mac. Metallica is a good band, whereas Fleetwood Mac is a great band. That is all.

Jason | 10/23/2008, 11:25 am EST

Can’t wait to see them in Seattle…..love St. Anger, I think they should add more – that album will be considered a masterpiece in 10 years time, honestly.

WTF | 10/23/2008, 12:52 pm EST

Are you really comparing Fleetwood Mac to Metallica? Thats almost like comparing Mozart to Slayer. The only thing they have in common is that they use guitars. This makes you a retard. That is all.

Chopper | 10/23/2008, 1:36 pm EST

My only complaint here is not seeing Creeping Death – How do you tour on an album titled Death Magnetic and not play Creeping Death – 50 – 70,000 people chanting “DIE!” I mean, c’mon… Don’t mind Frantic (actually the only song on St Anger I really like), but they could leave out Roam (way overplayed) and Until it Sleeps doesn’t even seem to fit the rest of the list… Oh and did somebody say something about playing more Master?? Are they going back to truncating it halfway through – if so that’s bullshit – it’s a great song, play the whole thing!

Joe | 10/23/2008, 1:42 pm EST

No “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “Sanitarium”? You’ve got to be kidding me.

Sig | 10/23/2008, 2:21 pm EST

Come on, there’s always going to be songs not on your setlist, that is why you have an ipod.

Metallica’s Death Magnetic keeps sounding better and better, you love it every time you listen and focus on something new in the sound. And the live show will be amazing.

By the way, Frantic, St. Anger, Some Kind of Monster, and The Unnamed Feeling are all GREAT songs off of St. Anger. Get modern.

Keith | 10/23/2008, 4:42 pm EST

St. Anger chronicled a band completely lost and not sure what it wanted to do or sound like at that time.

St. Anger sounds contrived…

It is a mixed message to market this band as returning to it’s roots of speed & power and have not songs representing that in the setlist.

The setlist probably will change, but it’s not what fans want on the opening night of the tour.

Sammy | 10/23/2008, 4:46 pm EST

I stopped rooting for metallica since those comercial morons fired Jason.

There is no exception, even they try to play loud, fast or whatever.

Cheers.

green | 10/23/2008, 6:35 pm EST

to criticize the best metal band that started it all is for people that think they know music but truly are a part of the ongoing trend of what is hot and what is not. METALLICA is why i picked up a guitar and have been playing for twenty years(METALLICA=GOD)

Not as confident in Death Magnetic? Are you insane? They played HALF THE ALBUM. There are only 10 tracks on Death Magnetic and they tore through 5 of them on the opening night of the tour. The other songs will come. I was at the show and it was easily the best Metallica show since the Black Album tour. I saw them on the opening of the Madly in Anger with the World tour and that show was complete crap compared to this one.

# 1 Metallica Fan ! | 10/24/2008, 12:15 pm EST

What?? You mean to tell me they didn’t play “Screaming for Vengeance” or “Peace Sells, but Who’s Buying”?? C’mon those are their best songs.

Master of Sphincter | 10/24/2008, 12:18 pm EST

They could have played more of their better classic tunes.

Okay... | 10/24/2008, 5:34 pm EST

#1 Metallica Fan.. I really hope you were just being sarcastic.. If you weren’t, you’re a fucking retard…

Peace Sells- Megadeth

Screaming for Vengeance- Judas Priest

in case anyone was wondering…

Mr.CIT | 10/25/2008, 3:34 pm EST

I just returned from the Albuquerque, NM concert and was impressed with the energy these guys seem to continue to show after 25+ years. What I was unimpressed with was the Death Magnetic set. If Metallica is getting back to the indoor “Arena” type of concerts, and trying to revitalize their earlier days with the DM album, then they should have invested more $$ on their set. I mean really, if anyone reading this blog attended their And Justice for all… tour, you can realte. That set was awesome. The extra’s (or no extra’s) I am commenting on would have only enhanced and added to the experience of the Metallica Concert experience.
I was on the floor for this one and for more than half of the show, the guys were at the other side of the stage. I guess that would have been ok, if there were a couple of big screens projecting the concert. Something to look at other than a first view of an empty mic stand would have added to the show, but this was not the case.
The sound was good, not great.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the
show, but I have to point out that with a ticket costing almost $100.00 each, and probably a sold out tour, the band could have splurged on a few extras like big screens or more pyro… These guys are awesome and can still play.

Go see the concert and make your own opinion.

trujillo should really donate some hair to lars

why the hell do they have to play songs from st. anger on any show!! and wat f***all lyrics the new album has

brian | 10/25/2008, 4:40 pm EST

that set list actually sucks.

Bill | 10/25/2008, 8:37 pm EST

They didn’t play My Apocalypse? I figured they would be closing shows with that one.

Sezza | 10/26/2008, 6:44 pm EST

It’s nice to hear such a great discussion by such ‘learned music critics’… NOT! Get over yourslelves for God’s sake. Metallica are fantastic, a band that has come through more than 2 decades and can still bring out such an album as Death Magnetic. Sure the lyrics may not be those of a masterpiece but it is a great album that is fun to listen to and they can still shred like hell. Stop criticising… if you dont like it don’t listen to it! You don’t have to bitch about it…

The set list may not embody all of their great work but seeing Metallica play anthing live is always a treat so get off your stupid uneducated high horses and appreciate their music and achievements. If you can write music that fits your elite standards than go and do it, stop criticising a band that is having a crack and doing it well.

don | 10/27/2008, 2:17 pm EST

Unfortunately, their new album is really flat. Very disappointing. Where are the melodies, solos or anything else to make it interesting? They have no new ideas. This is nowhere near as good as their ’80s work. Hype something else, please.

brian | 10/27/2008, 6:14 pm EST

dude, there’s solos all over that album. clearly you haven’t listened to it and you’re just talking shit.

brian | 10/27/2008, 6:16 pm EST

…and that first set list still sucks. it looks like they made some adjustments though. hope they play battery when i see them.

Venice, Cali | 10/28/2008, 3:20 am EST

What? No Sanitarium?

Lina | 10/28/2008, 9:36 am EST

Actually i think its a fucking great set-list.. ok, i´m not a fan o frantic.. but dont complain, most of the songs are awsome.. and this tour is about the new album so for you who are even goin to one of these shows, stop complain

Locjoe | 10/28/2008, 1:13 pm EST

I hope that Metallica to change the play list in each concert, this list is ok, but not enought, for the Metallica fans.

TROO METAL Posers | 10/28/2008, 11:42 pm EST

Death Magnetic is incredible. And anyone who is familiar with Metallica, knows that they change the setlist constantly. By the end of this part of the tour, the setlist will be totally different. But keep TWJYL as the opener. Killer.

D | 10/30/2008, 6:14 pm EST

@Sammy

Very sad sad reason to stop rooting for Metallica. Jason wasn’t fired, he quit. Fact. It may have been hard for him (and you obviously) but his decision and I imagine it was the right decision, especially then. But he wasn’t fired. He was awesome yes. But so is Rob. Of course, it’s your choice to not like them, but fact is Jason didn’t get fired.

As for setlist, I think someone already said it: no set list will be perfect as everyone has a different opinion on what they want to hear… ie., sucks, good, awesome are all relative.

Fairweather fan from the start | 8/15/2009, 3:04 pm EST

Almost any Metallica song played at their concert is fine by me. It is a Metallica concert and they can play what the hell they want. The only song I insist on, is Nothing Else Matters, since that was our wedding song :-) Anything else is icing on great cake.

Anonymous | 9/16/2009, 1:55 pm EST

I agree with you “fairweather fan from the start”. I’ve seen many changes to the setlist, and i’m only hoping to hear Nothing Else Matters, my boyfriend is taking me to the concert and that is the first song he ever dedicated to me, Three years ago. Whatever songs they play will be great, the only way the concert could get any better is if they played every song they have ever written, (excluding St Anger, which would be a great intermission) Some people like their Metallica a little heavier, some like it more emotional. Whatever your preference….. You saw/ are going to the show for a reason. Don’t hate!!!
