Guns N’ Roses Officially Announce “Chinese Democracy”: Pre-Orders Start Today

10/22/08, 12:50 pm EST

Guns n’ Roses released a statement today officially confirming the arrival of Chinese Democracy on November 23rd. “The release of Chinese Democracy marks a historic moment in rock n’ roll,” said Irving Azoff and Andy Gould. They also added that Best Buy would be launching a “monumental campaign that matches the groundbreaking sound of the album itself.” Pre-orders begin today for the 14-track album co-produced by Axl Rose and Caram Costanzo (Pearl Jam’s No Code, Rage Against the Machine’s Evil Empire). Chinese Democracy will be available on CD, digital download and vinyl (with a free digital download option) through Geffen Records and Black Frog (Rose’s publishing company). Follow the jump for the official press release.

MINNEAPOLIS, October 22, 2008 – Best Buy and Geffen Records announced that one of the most highly anticipated albums of all time, Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy, will be available beginning Nov. 23 at Best Buy and BestBuy.com on CD, vinyl, and digital downloads. The title track, the first single from the album, was released to radio today, October 22. Chinese Democracy is the first album of new material from one of rock’s most influential bands since the 1991 simultaneous releases of Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II.

“The release of Chinese Democracy marks a historic moment in rock n’ roll,” said co-managers Irving Azoff and Andy Gould. “We’re launching with a monumental campaign developed by Gary Arnold and the Best Buy team that matches the groundbreaking sound of the album itself. Guns N’ Roses fans have every reason to celebrate, for this is only the beginning.”

Chinese Democracy is one of the most highly anticipated albums in music history, and Best Buy is thrilled to deliver this explosive and previously elusive release to Guns N’ Roses fans. Longtime fans will be rewarded for their patience and loyalty to this great band, while a new generation of fans will be blown away,” said Gary Arnold, Senior Entertainment Officer for Best Buy. “Axl Rose is one of the most dynamic and gifted writers and performers in modern music. Best Buy is excited to work with Axl to make the release of Chinese Democracy THE musical event of 2008!”

“Guns N’ Roses is THE premier American rock band,” commented Steve Berman, President, Sales and Marketing, Interscope Geffen A&M Records. “Partnering with Gary and everyone at Best Buy to release one of rock’s most anticipated and legendary albums is truly a moment in music history. We’re thrilled to be able to announce that Chinese Democracy is coming, it’s coming this year, and it’s coming to Best Buy.”

Produced by Axl Rose and Caram Costanzo, the album, which will be released on Black Frog/Geffen Records, includes 14 tracks. “Shackler’s Revenge” debuted September 14 through the Rock Band 2 videogame and “If The World” can be heard in the film Body Of Lies, which premiered on October 11.

Chinese Democracy is being released in three formats: CD, Vinyl LP (with a free digital download of the tracks), and as a digital album. Pre-orders at www.BestBuy.com/chinesedemocracy begin today.

Please lets not be mistaken: This is an Axl Rose Solo Album and not a Guns N Roses album.

I’m not taking away from the music – but please recogonize the truth behind the name.

It will be good. It might become great. It will never reach the previous standard the original band created and met.

“Boring mainstream metal” is exactly what America needs. Large, over the top, commercial, American rock n roll bad ass American rock n roll. America needs Axl Rose like it needs Bud, baseball, stadiums, bakini clad blondes, Fender, Chevy, frat boys, college football, Les Pauls, cheerleaders, apple pie, and on and on. America thirsts for Axl. America has been missing its “rock band” for too long. Large, mainstream, corporate rock n roll sings about sex, drugs, politics, love, failed love, etc., not poop and the Devil. Long live Commercial Rock

People need to stop hanging onto the last little threads of the grunge movement and making inane “anti Axl/commercial rock” statements. Soooo fucking annoying. Go play smells like teen spirit and cut yourself if you dont like this music and stop your bitching.

Personally, I cant wait for this album.

John | 10/22/2008, 5:27 pm EST

GUNS N FUCKING ROSES are back baby!!!!! Can’t wait for november

Michael | 10/22/2008, 5:38 pm EST

Imagine how much better it would have been with the whole crew there. There is NO way these new guys can compare to the original talent in the band. I’m not hating, just don’t feel it should be called GNR. If he’d released it as Axl Rose or something else, I would have been cool. One man, does not make it GNR… That is my only heart burn. I do feel Axl is a brilliant song writer.

Joe | 10/22/2008, 5:45 pm EST

Don’t get too excited…the album is good for what it is…but don’t expect anything “classic” on here. I’ve heard most of it, and well, it’s good but forgettable.

Joe | 10/22/2008, 5:47 pm EST

And too add…essentially this is an Axl solo album.

Canadian Mr Big | 10/22/2008, 5:59 pm EST

Hey, does anyone know if Chinese Democracy is coming out in canadian Best Buys too?

THIS ALBUM FUCKING ROCKS!

#1FaN | 10/22/2008, 6:07 pm EST

Yes I’m very excited to have Axl back in the scene again! When I first heard the leaks it took me a lil time to get used to the “new” material but then I fell in love with it. I just wished that Axl stuck to His old material sound but I know that would be impossible since the orignal members aren’t there to add that crazy spark into the music. But I’m learning to accept and move on lol! I’m just so damn excited to be able to see Axl back on tour and in the circut again!!!!! Long Live stroke of Axl’s Genuis!!!!!!

Realtime Visionary | 10/22/2008, 6:15 pm EST

Disagree with you Joe. This album has been in my head for the past 3 years. The songs are brilliant. Put down those old great GnR records and open your unbiased ears to a new generation of rock! It is Axl’s opus, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good! Forget these nay sayers, listen for yourself!!!

Jason | 10/22/2008, 6:17 pm EST

When do we get our free Dr. Pepper?

kemosabie1 | 10/22/2008, 6:20 pm EST

Runs N' Hoses | 10/22/2008, 6:30 pm EST

I’ve heard of these Guns M’ Roses guys. Didn’t they tour with the Dead or something? In any case, I’m sure lots of hippies will be excited about the Chinese Democracy release. No doubt Gun’s N’ Roses will appear on VH1 and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno to connect with their aging demographic.

Myk | 10/22/2008, 6:44 pm EST

Anyone who claims that this is an “Axl Rose Solo Album” forgets a few things:

Firstly, Slash and Co have shown nothing but support in interviews for Axl’s vision. They walked out on him, he didn’t fire them.

Secondly Axl is certainly not the first person to end up as the sole remaining original member – Megadeth is a prime example. Hell, Napalm Death changed lineup entirely in the middle of recording an album.

Thirdly, it’s Axl whose surname is in the band’s name. Well, him and Tracii Gunns, who left the band before anyone knew who they were.

Finally – this new lineup has been together longer than the “classic lineup”, and is made up of far better musicians.

Stan | 10/22/2008, 6:49 pm EST

Wow!! This will get everyone’s attention. Even if you think it is “generic,” “mediocre” or “Forgettable,” still Gnr at their worst is still light years ahead of the “best” of today’s “safe” rock bands. Gnr is larger than the sum of its parts. Gnr is even bigger than just Axl. Gnr is a way of life, and “attitude” a “feeling” and a “sound” Axl has perpetuated the Gnr “sound” and “feeling” It’s here baby!

Slam Rock | 10/22/2008, 6:52 pm EST

I heard that KORY CLARKE of Warrior Soul named his new record Chinese Democracy!!! I KORY CLARKE GETS SUED and AXL KICKS his BONEY ASS

I’m Sure Geffen will sue Kory Clarke and his new awful band for ripping of the New CD title name ” Chinese Democracy” from Gun’s N Roses…

and recording a lousy Kory Clarke record.

Meh.

I remember reading account about this album in Rolling Stone over 8 years ago. After so many additional years of waiting, I lost interest quite awhile ago.

I’ve listened to the song “Chinese Democracy” a few times so far — decent rock song, but not amazing, and so far nothing has been shown that any of this is even remotely worth waiting 17 years to hear.

johno rose | 10/23/2008, 4:31 pm EST

Axl fucking rocks!! fuck what the wanna be rock stars say. He is a living legend. Good on ya Axl, you the best front man ever. Long live the king!!!!

huhnbug | 10/24/2008, 12:05 pm EST

can someone here please tell me what a song that sounds 15 yrs in the making ACTUALLY sounds like? obviously no song would ever be 15 yrs in the making….even if zeppelin released a new good song it would constitute them taking this long to make it. get over it-its a fucking song. a nut-crunching one at that

HoHum | 10/24/2008, 3:23 pm EST

Hmm, well thanks for coming out…

The single is not a far departure in sound or attitude, just not sure what was the whole 17 yr. drama needed for or the lineup changes…this stuff would sound so much more authentic with the authentic members…new dudes are all fine but are simply surrogates in GN’R

Oh well, hope the album does well regardless

—every effort will be rewarded—

1980 Eagles break up
1994 Eagles release “Hell Freezes Over” with exactly 4 songs of new material.

Where’s the outrage?

“Don’t get back 14 years in just one day…So hard to keep my own head, thats what I say”

Just sounds like some Holywood prescripted movie soundtrack music – let’s play it safe boys, it just might sell. They got 3 “stellar” guitar players and none has contributed a worthwhile song or a riff or a solo. Shredding is not equal to soloing.

This band started falling apart right after Lies EP. It’s when they lost Adler and then Izzy…

Rock will have to wait another decade to be saved…

Steen | 10/26/2008, 7:43 pm EST

Hey FUCKERS. A lot of you guys rock. Big time, cause AXL fucking rules the world. All the rest of you dickheads who dreams of the original crew i GNR just forgot what GNR really are made of. Up until the band was set there was quite a few guys who played the studios that turn out to GNR as we know it. GNR has since before they even got there final name been changeing and changeing. Thats the way it is and allways will be. Therefore it fine by me with the new crew setup. As long as AXL is being the frontman we should all be happy. Yeeeeehaaaa AXL. You ROCK. Fucking love you!!!

If this album is anything less than one of the greatest albums of all time it will be a failure. Thanks Axl, for finally gracing us with your genius! LOL!

Guns N’ Roses JUST shares the name with what used to be the most exciting band on the planet twenty years ago. If anyone has heard Axls songs pre GNR they would know enough to keep expectations low. Axl knows he doesnt have the material that the fans deserve(hence the delay). Hell… let the old guy make some money and retire already.

Axl must have run out of money for smack.

Really, when the country was into heavy metal they had one great album. Everything else was easily forgettable. This many years to create an album is not a sign of it’s greatness, but a testament to Axl piss poor attitude.

Dragon | 11/16/2008, 3:44 am EST

FINALLY! This has been a longtime in the making. Good things come to those who wait…and this is a masterpiece. Yes, I miss the classic Guns, but that is gone and at this time, it is truly unknown if we will ever see that incarnation of Guns again. Axl has always been a visionary and has pursued his vision once again. This is the shot in the arm that has been needed. Music has become so boring and lifeless. The bands now wish they could have the talent and vision that Axl has. This shows the wanna-be,pseudo rock n’ roll bands how it is really done. Paradise City was found , doing alive and well.FUCKING THANK YOU FOR RETURNING HOME!!! YOU HAVE BEEN MISSED,AXL! WE NEEDED YOUR MUSIC AND VISION ONCE AGAIN! The future is yours…

I JUST HEARD CHINESE DEMOCRACY | 11/16/2008, 10:10 am EST

The album is amazing, fantastic, worth every dollar spent, every year of waiting. I should say Axel is a visionary and Chinese Democracy SHOULD redefine American Rock Scene (HOPEFULLY). It is the best album of the decade – noone could disagree. 12 tracks so perfect to be all of them number 1 on Billboard. Axel, thank you. You´re much better now than 15 years ago.

Pinky | 11/18/2008, 8:57 am EST

GnR had one album – Appetite. The Honeydrippers was NOT Led Zeppelin, Wings was NOT the Beatles, Aerosmith era Done with Mirrors was NOT Aerosmith, DLR was NOT Van Halen and Chinese Democracy is NOT GnR. You can put a Cadillac grille on a VW and it is STILL a VW.

All hail Mother Love Bone. Alice in Chains. Catherine Wheel.

Axl is an extremely talented guy – a prick, nonetheless.

I would pit any Nickleback CD against Chinese Democracy (and not have to wait 17 fukn pretentious years for it).

Papa Doc | 11/19/2008, 8:48 pm EST

Are you kidding me? I am listening to this CD right now. This doesn’t even sound like the same band. Regardelss of who is in it, this sounds like an album Axl may have made 10+ years ago as a solo record with a new direction. Half the world has already heard this CD. There are like 4 pretty good songs. It isn’t a great album by any means. The shitty half of UYI 1 & 2 is better than this. Sorry.

Workman | 11/22/2008, 4:37 am EST

As a long-time GNR fan and logical human being that understands the now past frustrations that many fans have felt toward the future or lack-therof of this band, I feel the need to express my opinion. The following is directed toward each and every individual who feels the need to downplay, disprespect, and put down the release of this album; If you think you can do a better job than lets hear what you are going to be releasing. Let me hear what kind of magical music that you have the ability to pleasure my ears, mind and soul with. I have been waiting for a long time to hear some new material from GNR and while some of it may not be what I am used to hearing from this band it is new, it is music and it is worth at least some respect. Sure, it’s not the original GNR but in case you forgot since it has been so long, Axl, his voice, his lifestyle and his attitude were a very large part of what GNR was and I am happy to say…still is. Time flies, things change, bands and friends re-arrange but an iconic voice and vision like Axl’s stay the same. If you don’t like it don’t buy it, don’t listen to it and please just shut the fuck up about how bad you think it sucks. Get in the ring mother fucker!!!

Aerial 360 | 11/22/2008, 5:29 pm EST

While I have always been a huge Guns fan, after reading Slash’s Autobiography, it’s clear that AXL’s ego and self centerdness fcked up on making the band the most legendary of all time. Between having to have the name solely instead of sharing it with the other members, to being the worlds biggest primadonna (always contacting Slash through his manager instead of being professional and showing up to rehearsals like everyone else and collaborating face to face), AXL developed a God complex and started to run things like he was complely in charge like such a control freak, totally disrespecting the others who were just as responsible for the bands success. They deserved to be all treated as equals. Showing up hours late so many times on the Illusions tour and causing the riots were all were just some more of the examples of his primadonna attitude and lack of respect for his bandmates and fans. I will buy this new album because AXL Rose is one of the greatest frontmen that ever lived and his vocal dexterity is nearly second to none, however I’ll never understand how someone could be so self centered as to permanently alienate his former bandmates and legions of fans. Any version of GNR with AXL is bound to be great but anyone who doesn’t believe that a massive amount was left on the table as a result of this not being the original lineup is totally kidding themselves. Why destroy the massively unrivaled potential of the original lineup because of your ego, self centeredness, and control freak personality. I must admit Slash, Duff, and Matt are as much to blame for putting up with AXL instead of having the backbone to call him out on his bullsh$t, never give up their equal rights to the name, and forcing him to make the personal changes he needed to make for the good of everyone. I thought David LEE Roth would never be able to work again with VH, however I’ll bet it is 100 times less likely we will ever see this original lineup again.

Badly need your help. Noble life demands a noble architecture for noble uses of noble men. Lack of culture means what it has always meant: ignoble civilization and therefore imminent downfall.
I am from Barbados and also now am reading in English, give please true I wrote the following sentence: “How to draw cartoons travel by weber this is bruce blitz how to draw cartoons kit by weber martin.”

;) Thanks in advance. Lindsey.
